Doctors are noticing different symptoms and seriousart attacks. A lot has to do with inflammation. Janelle wang joins us from home with some of those detail ls. In most cases when you get covid19 its a respiratory issue, but doctors are noticing in children theyre getting a syndrome. Basically their immune system goes into overdrive. Their system gets inflamed and their body goes into shock and their organs start to fail. Doctors even have a working name for it. Its called pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome. I spoke to dr. John torres about it. Interviewed a 12yearold and her mom last week. The 12yearold ended up having issues with her heart because this affected her heart. She went into cardiac arrest. They had to do cpr. They were able to bring her back and shes doing fine. But researchers started looking into this and found theres at least 100 plus cases including here in new york city, 15 cases since the pandemic started to the point where they sent out a message to doctors saying keep an eye out for this. Whats happening is the immune system is causing these issues to happen. These numbers are pretty low. So i dont want parents to be too terribly concerned about this, but the symptoms theyre talking about are fevers lasting four days or longer along with a rash, maybe both eyes being red like somebody has pink eye without that discharge coming out but just the redness of the eye, or abdominal pain which is what the one 12yearold girl had before she had her cardiac arrest. If you see the symptoms or worry about it, talk to your doctor and say heres something im worried about. As for vaccines, dr. Torres says 80 companies are working on one right now.
