We hope you stay with us for the next hour. Thanks so much for joining us. Im kira klapper. Vianey arana joins us from home with a look at our microclimate forecast. Looks nice in san jose, which we just showed. But earlier we were showing San Francisco and it was cloudy, even drizzly. Yeah. We definitely got a drizzly start for the coastline. I have a live look over San Francisco. You can see the drizzle. Thats because we have a system passing just to our north that will bring a little drizzle to far sonoma areas as well. Most of the bay area will remain dry for the afternoon. As far as our temperatures go, were running fairly mild. Right now 57 degrees. 55 in livermore, 58 in concord. A few degrees warmer in some spots, including areas like santa rosa. 13 degrees warmer. San jose 7 degrees warmer. And that temperature change in the afternoon, we are expecting off just a little bit compared to yesterday. Yesterday we did manage to see some upper 70s, low 80s. Today topping out into the mid70s. So a closer look on when this dry weather is going to remain coming up in 15 minutes. All right. We look forward to seeing you then. Thanks. You may have heard beginning monday, may 4th, some restriction will be lifted on things like construction, gardening, some outdoor activities. And the governor is signaling he might be easing restrictions soon. This amid the backdrop of californians fighting the stayathome orders as we enter week eight. At the state capital, more than 1,000 protesters called on the governor to loosen or even end the stayathome orders. 33 people were arrested. Nbc bay area political analyst says these protests are making a difficult Pandemic Response even more complicated. There are not enough National Guards men, not enough california highway patrol, not enough local sher liviffs and pe to make sure everybody does what theyre supposed to do. Im looking forward next week to make some constructive announcements in this space. I dont want to overpromise. During the governors daily briefing, he hinted at increasing flexibility with the shelter at home order. More tests available and more hospital beds opening across the state. Still, california now has 50,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and 2,000 people have died. The governor says if certain conditions continue to improve, more businesses could be allowed to reopen in days, not weeks. Now to Southern California where crowds gathered to protest the governors order to close beaches in orange county. This is video of protesters in huntington beach. Police on horse back worked t governors order saying it unfairly singles out that countys beaches. The governor says its because people are crowding those beaches. Santa cruz county starts its new weekend plan, a partial closure of all beaches. No one is allowed on the sand between 11 00 a. M. And 5 00 p. M. Swimming and surfing are okay, but no walks on the beach, no lounging on the beach. Some locals arent too happy about these new rules. There is a lot of us that find kind of our spirit and our soul at the beach. So to shut it down as a whole is definitely more of a health risk than the virus. The new restrictions will be in place indefinitely. Police say they will be out in force. Solano county is now joining other bay area county when it comes to relaxing some rules beginning this monday, may 4th. Take a look. The majority of the bay area is now onboard. Napa county already has something similar in place. Construction and real estate transactions can resume. Nurseries and golf courses can open up again, but with strict safety rules. And almost half the country is reopening. The states that you see in dark green have already partially reopened. Texas and states across the south and midwest. The states in light between will reopen soon. Those are states like kansas and florida. 24 states in total. The orange states are still under full shelterathome orders. Thats the entire west coast, including us in california, of course. And much of the east coast as well. And as those states prepare to reopen or are already reopened, there is Something Else that has peoples attention. Concerning about a meat shortage across the country. The coronavirus outbreak closed down some Meat Processing plants, sending some people into hor hoarding once again. We explore where thats necessary. Reporter at costco, meat storage bins are bare. Limiting three choices of meat per customer. I was able to score on one. Reporter she was able to score a tri tip. But some customers are frustrated that their meat buying is limited. Kind of over safeway and the grocery stores. I thought i would come out and see if i could get a tri tip or some chicken. Reporter chicken is scarce these days. Some people may be feeling the need to hoard meat. Just like people are still b buying toilet paper and paper towels during this pandemic. More than a dozen meat plants nationwide that supply places like costco are now shut down. The president reassuring americans there will be no interruption to the nations food supply. I expect to see the supply chain as strong as ever, maybe stronger for certain reasons. Reporter owners of the this meat company say there is no need to panic. We have an abundance of local ranchers that are having their meat processed. Were extraordinarily busy. When were busy, it means that local ranchers are doing really well. Reporter they may not supply the stores where you shop, so meat at least for now is available. It depends on where you look. Nbc bay area news. Face coverings are now required inside airport buildings beginning monday for staff and travelers. This is in addition to social distancing protocols. And overnight, it just got the green light, the most promising coronavirus treatment thus far developed right here in the bay area. Just yesterday, the fda granted emergency use approval for remdesivir. Its an antiviral drug developed by foster city based gilead sciences. Early results showed patients who took the drug improved 31 faster than those taking a place placebo. The full study has yet to be published. I think its important to note this is a medicine thats really for the most severe patients. This is for hospitalized patients. This is for patients that have really progressed very, very advanced in their disease. And what we see here is really of course not a cure but a very, very significant and important treatment. Get this. Gilead is donating oneandahalf million doses to the u. S. Government. Much more ahead, open for business, but at what cost . The one county in california defying the shelterathome order. Plus, the napa county winery doing something good. How theyre spreading the love and sharing some wine with people in need of a pickmeup. Were all doing our part by staying at home. That could mean an increase in energy bills. You can save by setting your heat to 68 or lower. Unplugging and turning off devices when not in use. Or just letting the sun light your home. Stay well and keep it golden. Welcome back. 7 11 on your saturday morning. Look at this. Its like were in heaven. Just above the clouds on the tip of the golden gate bridge. A cloudy morning. Vianey arana details a cooler forecast for the weekend and another heatup this coming week. A rural county has become the states first to defy the governors stayathome orders. Moda county. We do that through our Mission Every day, which is to share wine and give hope. Reporter the companys foundation is focussing on helping mothers in the Hospitality Industry who have been laid off in recent weeks. We knew that millions of people would be out of jobs. Reporter all the mom has to do is sign up on the website and give some info. One hope gives them each 50 and another 50 in wine credit. A lot of mothers need some wine right now. Its a little escape. So we wanted to make sure that we included that as well. We might not be able to provide stimulus to be able to cover a month for somebody, but we might be able to make their day. Reporter jennifer lost her business and received one of those grants. She put her 50 credit to the one home Entrepreneurship Program where she hosts parties to make money. It is just constant. It is just like one hope, one hand helping the other constantly. It is a really neat concept. Reporter one hope has given grants to more than 500 people already and donated 50,000 to the cause. The founders say they will continue helping those who have helped them and so many others. Ian cole, nbc bay area news. Time now to check in with vianey arana for a look at our microclimate forecast on this first weekend of may. Time is just flying. Hi. Good morning. I know. It is hard to believe that april either slowly went by us or quickly. I cant decide. Weve got a great view because it showcases that cloud cover, the fog, and we have certainly seen some drizzle as well, especially in San Francisco. Our live cam was showing some of that spotty rain. I do want to show you as well the beautiful view over wall net creek, which is the one we just saw because it shows gradual clearing in that cloud cover. Currently were in the 50s. 55 in palo alto. A few degrees warmer than yesterday around this time. Satellite radar really shows the picture of whats going on as far as our weather pattern goes. We have a cold front kind of to land, rthwest. Sonoma county. It will spring up the chance or two of seeing some light showers. The rest of the bay area will remain fairly dry, so were not too worried about the rain. Daytime highs for today will be running a few degrees cooler because of that. All right. 71 degrees in san jose. 73 in east san jose. Morgan hill at 73 degrees. In through the interior valleys, 72. Concord 70 degrees. Certainly going to notice cooler temperatures. Winds right now at 14 miles an hour. Expect for it to get breezy. In through the coastline, wed wood city 68. San matteo 67. San francisco low 60s. Up through the north were talking 69 for napa. Over the next seven days, you can see we have the system that sticks to our north, and then we dont really see much of a rain pattern. So we will remain fairly dry as High Pressure rebuilds again into monday and tuesday. And then looking out ahead into thursday. Notice that system off in the pacific. Well, that doesnt necessarily trend to a much wet system, so thats going to be something we will be monitoring because were missing out on that rain. Inland temperatures right now, 72 for today. That morning fog will clear. We might get some of that cloud cover again tomorrow. So 73 degrees. Then as i mentioned, that High Pressure rolls in on monday. Thats whats going to warm us up into the 80s for tuesday and wednesday. And look at that. A drying and warming trend indeed will be climbing into the 90s for the interior valleys on thursday and friday. For inland areas and San Francisco, expect to hit the 70s when we start to see that warmup expected on the way. For tomorrow, 60 degrees, probably or coolest day of the week will be tomorrow. So for the weekend. And then as we begin to progressively warm up, we will notice that. It will go up by as much as 10, 15 degrees in some areas. This is not going to help out our snow pack. I will have a look at how that is going coming up during my next big hit at about 7 45. Back to you. We look forward to seeing you then. Thanks. It is 7 20 right now. Still ahead, a cautionary tale of reopening too early. The less sons the bay area learned after the 1918 spanish flu. Researchers looking to history for lessons are finding there are many parallels between our experience with the covid19 pandemic and the 1918 spanish influenza outbreak. T what San Franciscos response 102 years ago can tell us now. The flickering images of a 1918 San Francisco parade celebrating the end of world war i. Mid the backdrop of the spanish many wearing now scouring for what might apply to the covid19 pandemic. Aclosed places of public amusement and banned indoor public gathering. Reporter talex has studied San Franciscos response to the spanish flu which killed 3,000 in the city and as many as 50 million worldwide. In a few places including denver and seattle, sacramento, oakland and San Francisco, the use of face masks while out in public was made mandatory. Reporter San Francisco residents became weary of social distancing measures. At least 2,000, maybe over people in an auditorium. None of them wearing masks. Reporter when world war i ended in november of 1918 in celebrations like this were taking place, people let their guard down. With city officials elected to reimplement business closures, it spiked again. They went out to celebrate and there was another round of disease and deaths that resulted from that. Reporter he says that lesson applies to current times and what he sees as a rush to try and return to normal. When these social distancing measures and bans are lifted, it becomes very difficult to reimplement them if necessary. Reporter people get used to scenes of death and illness, and that will need to more of both and more images as poignant as those of the past. Fascinating. And incredible footage. Now to something good, honoring those on the front lines. Yesterday was medical team approaeciation day. In an effort to ensure First Responders know they are deeply appreciated. The employees there greeted with applause and cheers from other First Responders during the morning shift change. One nurse told us seeing the support motivates her and her colleagues to go to the front lines every day. Im an emotional person so i get tearful, but its really heart warming and it makes us proud to go to work every day. Im proud to be here as a nurse supporting the community and them supporting us. Well tell you about the new technology that could be critical for retail when the lockdown is lifted. Good morning. It is saturday, may 2nd, 7 28. Here is a live look outside over san jose. Looks pretty mild down below, but cloudy skies up above. Not quite chirp as a bird weather, but a nice little cool down for those of us who felt the last few days were a little too warm. Thanks so much for joining us. Im kira klapper. We will send it over to vianey arana who joins us from home with a look at our forecast. Good morning. Good morning. You said it right. Its not necessarily cold. It is a little mild. Maybe even a little warmer. Temperatures in the 50s right now. We did have some Early Morning drizzle because of a system that passes or that is currently passing just to our north. This is what it brought to San Francisco. Early morning drizzle. And our live cam certainly showcasing that light those light drops of rain there. Current temperatures right now in san jose 57 degrees. Were almost at the 60 degree mark. We still will be cooler in through the afternoon because of that cloud cover. So let me give you a sneak peak of that temperature trend for san jose. By about 1 00, well be at 70 degrees. And then we will stay in that low 70 mark at least through the afternoon. Well get some gradual clearing. Ill have a closer look at the california drum monitor coming up. Well see you then. Thanks sglrchl s thanks. Beginning this monday, things will be lifted. And the governor is signaling he might be easing more restrictions soon. This amid the backdrop of protesters across california fighting the shelter at home orders as we approach week eight. At the state capital in sacramento yesterday, more than 1,000 protesters called on the governor to loosen, even end stay at home orders. They ordered the group to disperse and then moved in. 33 people were arrested. Nbc bay area political analyst tells us these protests are making a difficult Pandemic Response even more complicated. There are not enough National Guards men, not enough california highway patrol, not enough local sheriffs and police to make sure that everybody does what theyre supposed to do. Im looking forward next week to be making, i think, some very constructive announcements in this space. I dont want to overpromise. During the governors daily briefing, newsome hinted at increasing flexibility with the shelter at home order. In addition to some other good news, more test availability and hospital beds opening across california. Our state now has 50,000 confirmed coronavirus
