People out into the world too soon. So, when is the right time . Well get to that question in a moment. First, the latest headlines. The coronavirus death toll in the u. S. Has risen to more than 53,000. The number of cases is inching closer to 1 million. There are 938,000 in this country. The World Health Organization caused somenn satu reporting there is no evidence that people who had coronavirus would be immune from getting it again. That, of course, would be a Major Public Health setback. The w. H. O. Later clarified a bit saying, it does believe people who are infected will develop some level of antibody protection but its too soon to know for sure. During a webcast on saturday, dr. Fauci said the u. S. Should be testing twice as many people as it is currently before we begin reopening the economy and society at large. Dr. Fauci says he believes that will happen in the next couple of weeks. More on these stories in a moment when we talk to the former head of t and sunday spotlight, the look for american survival in the Restaurant Industry that cannot live on takeout and delivery alone. In our sunday closer harry smith on animals reclaiming the Great Outdoors from National Parks to big cities while humans stay inside. And later, we will turn to a favorite sunday sitdown with the one and only Woody Harrelson on a long career from cheers forward. And the moment in high school when his life in show business was born. Someone said i cant do my lyrics. Before you know it, they convinced me. They really changed the course of my life. I just started singing. A sunday sitdown with wood Woody Harrelson. Plus another life well lived later in the show. Lets begin with the stages of reopening the countrys economy. The state of georgia has been out front in getting some of its citizens back to work. Thats where we find nbcs sam brock in atlanta. Sam, good morning. Reporter willie, good morning. Georgia was already ahead of the curve when it comes to opening up salons, spas and gyms, but in the last 48 hours, now restaurants and movie theaters slated to open tomorrow, but many owners are telling me theyre taking a wait and see approach. For Business Owners waiting for weeks its been horrible. Ive had to close down. Reporter a heavy lift is now over with gyms like this one in marietta, georgia, back in business. As soon as the governor did open things for us, god, i must have gotten 120 texts that day. Reporter two days after Governor Brian Kemp gave the thumbs up for tattoo parlors, nail salons and spas to reopen, among other shops, we found plenty of closed doors. Others reopening with adjustments. I think from now, things are going to change. Reporter the brazilian beauty spa outside atlantas requiring employees and customers to wear masks, paperless transactions and constant sanitizing. 20 states bringing back business in some way in the last week. South carolina has already opened retail shops. Were asking customers to stay six feet away from each other and also our employees. Reporter tennessee will bring back restaurants at half capacity tomorrow. The flurry of activity coming as the World Health Organization warns there isnt enough evidence about covid19 antibodies to guarantee the accuracy of an immunity passport. Later tweeting for clarification, most will develop an antibody response providing some level of protection. An important reminder as even states which have been cautious, like california, allow some residents back on beaches. I just dont think we have to live in a hole, a cave the whole time. We have to get out. Reporter as everyone looks for something to be heartened by. I love you, San Francisco. Lets sing our song. I left my heart reporter an meeemotional tu that swept through the streets of San Francisco. High on a hill. Reporter a moving tribute to first responders. For me reporter tony bennett there telling the city by the bay, it is important to come together in this uncertain time. You saw it there, willie, people all joining in from across the city in a show of unity. Willie . Yeah, fascinating to watch the state of georgia, which has been on the leading edge of all of this. People want to see how that works out. Sam brock in atlanta, thank you. Im joined by dr. Richard besser, former acting director of the cdc, now head of the Robert Wood Johnson foundation. Dr. Besser, thank you for your time. You were acting cdc director during the h1n1 swine flu outbreak and held those daily briefings at the white house. As georgia is dipping their toes in the water. Youre coming at this from a medical point of view, but how do you find that balance . There are an awful lot of people saying, this isnt worth putting my business, my livelihood, putting food on the table to stay inside . How do you view that dilemma . It is a dilemma. Everyone wants to get back to work but from a Public Health perspective, you want to do it slowly. You want to make sure your cases have been going down for a couple of weeks. You want to make sure youre able to test people adequately and know whos infected so you can get them isolated and get the people who have been in contact with them isolated. And overall you want to make sure you have enough room in your hospitals. When you reopen, there will be more cases. If youre barely holding on treating covid19, think of all those with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, you need room for everybody. You mentioned testing, dr. Besser, it cliche. People hear testing, testing, testi testing. Dr. Fauci said we need to double our Testing Capacity before we get people back to work. Why from your point of view is testing so critical to reopening our society . Its absolutely essential. Heres the reason why. Most people who get this infection, thankfully, are going to do very well. Right now the health care is testing only those with severe illness to see if they need to be in the hospital who have covid19. We need to test people with very mild symptoms. While theyll do well, theyll continue to spread it. You need to test those with mild illness, find out who theyve been in contact with, you have to provide space for these people so they can be isolated safely away from their loved ones so no one else gets sick but right now were only testing the most sick people. Thats not whats going to make this work when we really open the economy. Quickly, when i want to ask you about that confusion from the w. H. O. , saying perhaps if you get coronavirus, youre not immune from it, you can get it again. They walked that back a little bit. Is it true if you get coronavirus, theres a chance you are not immune from getting it a second time . Well, its an unanswered scientific question. And it has to be tested. Not only if your antibodies are immune, but is there a certain level of antibodies . If youre immune, does this mean you cant spread it to somebody else . W. H. O. Says youre not immune, it means the science isnt done and it has to be done. Its important if were going to use that as a card to get people back to work. There are so many antibody tests out there, they havent been validated to see if theyre testing the same thing and what all that information means. Dr. Richard besser, former acting director of the cdc. Great to have your expertise. Thanks for being with us. Meanwhile, President Trump has no scheduled Coronavirus Task force briefing today. For the first time in almost two weeks he didnt hold one on saturday either. The president taking the weekend off after he on thursday wandered allowed at a briefing if heat, light or disinfectant might get rid of the coronavirus in the briefing. He said hes not holding a briefing because the media asks hostile questions. Not worth the time and effort. Chuck todd, political director of meet the press. The president over the last few weeks has enjoyed Holding Court for a few hours, at times in that Briefing Room. Some republicans, according to a lot of reporting, are worried about the briefings. Theyre not only hurting the president and hurting the republican party, especially what he said about disinfectants on thursday. Will we see him in that Briefing Room again any time soon . Oh, i assume we do. Im skeptical this sort of him taking the advice of others saying, you know, your presence there doesnt help. Whenever you tell him his presence doesnt help somebody politically, usually does he not only like to hear that, he will dig in his heels and say, oh, yeah, watch me. So, i think that this was one of the rare cases, and weve seen it, oh, id say about once a year in trumps life in politics, do you see him turn tail, right, where he knows he needs to basically go into a corner and lick his wounds. Thats what it felt like. He realized the incoming was that bad. He realized a break was necessary. But im very skeptical this is going to hold. Frankly, i would be shocked if by the end of the week hes back doing his multihour press conferences. I totally agree. I was just going to say the same thing. I bet we see him back this week after a little time away. Meanwhile, there is a president ial Campaign Going on, believe it or not. Joe biden is conducting his campaign from his home in delaware. He said in an interview something a couple days ago, quote, i think, talking about President Trump, he is going to try to kick back the election somehow, come up with some rationale why it cant be held. Joe biden suggesting there may want be an election in november. Is that a widely viewed worry by democrats . No, i wouldnt say ive heard that widely viewed. I think it is more of a, he wouldnt do that, would he, type of question you get from some on the left. I think this is one of those, you know, this used to be attributed to lbj, willie, sometimes you say things and youre like, i dont know if its true or not, make your opponent deny it. This has the whiff of, whats the downside of the Vice President saying it . It fires up the democratic base, reminds them they need to show up and vote and then, force your opponent to say, no, im not going to delay the election, which they would like to get him on the record saying just that, willie. Strange president ial campaign, indeed. Chuck todd, thank you. Well look for more on meet the press when chuck is joined by white house c coordinator dr. Debo good sunday morning. We are going to be cooler ted, but as we head out this morning we are getting several reports of some foggy conditions especially around the coast including Half Moon Bay, also in parts of San Francisco. Be careful with that limited visibility. Taking a live look over walnut creek you can see some areas are mostly clear. A closer look at your daytime highs. Well be cooling off into the 70s. Again, were going with all highs. Our first high goes to a welcome bit of good news for kids at a time when school, little league, recitals and just about Everything Else have been put on hold. This week Infectious Disease expert dr. Anthony fauci, the face of President Trumps task force on coronavirus, joined actor will smith on his new snapchat show to answer burning questions from children. The tooth fairys essential work continues uninterrupted. Our next high goes to all of the happy couples pushing ahead with their weddings even as big social gatherings are prohibited. In one case, the bride and groom took a short break from fighting the virus to get married. Theyre both nurses on the front lines in baton rouge, louisiana. Theyve been planning their special day for months, but like many other couples had to change plans because of coronavirus restrictions. Mel and claire decided to go ahead and get married with just ten people in the church. But as claires father walked his daughter down the aisle, there was a surprise waiting in the pews. Claire and mels families asked guests to send in pictures of themselves. A photo of every guest was taped to the pew so the church was full in spirit. The couple livestreamed the ceremony for their guests, but there was another surprise. Many of those friends and family who could not be inside the church were waiting in their cars outside, honking and cheering as the newlyweds stepped out. Guests watched them cut their cake, drink some champagne and celebrate their first dance. The celebrations didnt last long, though. They both went back to work in the e. R. This week. Congratulations, guys. Thank you for what you do. Our next high goes to a pair of heroes in Great Britain who have raised millions for the countrys National Health service to help in the fight against coronavirus. Last week captain tom moore set out to raise 1,000 british pounds, about 1,200 worth of online donations by walking 100 laps around his garden in bedfordshire, england, in honor of his upcoming 100th birthday. The world war ii veteran shattered his goal by raising the equivalent of 35 million american dollars for health care workers, becoming an internal star in the process. Captain tom completed his laps with the National Guard saluting him and earned praise from the royal family and a public petition calling for him to be knighted. This week a 6yearold british boy named frank mills inspired by captain tom decided to raise 99 pounds by walking ten meters outside of his home. Frank, who has spina bifida, normally uses a wheelchair and only started walking short distances with his frame 18 months ago. Like captain tom, fraipg has blown past his goal by raising 300,000 for the nhs charities. Franks mom says the 6yearold saw captain tom on tv with his hats off to both of you you and happy 100th this week, captain tom. Our final high goes to an exciting week here at home in the nfl, culminating with a unique socially distant draft that had the leagues commissioner announcing the pick literally from his basement. Before the draft, though, the big news was that former new england patriot tight end and loveable goon Rob Gronkowski would be coming out of retirement to join tom brady. A lot more cloud cover than we thought this time yesterday morning. Thank you for joining us. Im kira klapper. Vianey arana has a look at our micro climate forecast. Yesterday turned out to be quite warm. It was. It climbed into 80s, upper 80s in the interior valleys. Youre right, we are seeing more cloud cover this morning thanks to the marine layer now. You can see its pretty nice up top. Some areas are getting reports of limited visibility including Half Moon Bay down to about three miles because of all the fog. Down to about two miles down through santa cruz as well down to about two miles. The rest of the bayla and livermorecover. Current temperatures right now in the 50s for the south bay. 53 degrees. 52 for Half Moon Bay. 54 in San Francisco. We are expecting to see another warm day but not as warm as yesterday. Were going to cool off by just a little bit in most areas including areas like santa cruz in the 70s. San jose, 78 degrees. Concord 80. Along the coastline in areas like San Francisco, Half Moon Bay we will remain in the 60s. We are going to be a little bit breezier this afternoon. Were going to keep that dry weather pattern at least through today into tomorrow. Then were going to see another warmup on the way. A closer look at what you can expect during the next seven days at 7 00 a. M. Well see you at 7 00, vianey. The shelter at home orders and closed parking lot signs did not seem to be enough to keep people away from the coast and other scenic spots this weekend. A lot of people want to go outside but you should know by now there are rules. Volunteers with the San FranciscoPolice CommunityEngagement Team braved the crowds at delores park, passed out face coverings for those who did not have them. In pacifica people did similar things at the beaches. Along with telling people the rules they asked lots of people to leave. San mateo county beaches are open but only to people who live within a fivemile radius. I would be disappointed if i had to leave, if they would make us leave. We did come from hayward. But then again i do understand. Quarantine is hard so we just needed the day to breathe and come to the beach randomly. In monterey, beaches were so packed police in Pacific Grove had to shut down the lovers point park because visitors werent properly social distancing. Public Health Officials are pleading with people to use masks when out in public and stay home as much as possible. And beginning today a city park will be closed on weekends and holidays, as a result of overcrowding and lack of social distancing. People headed to the beach to soak up sunshine. It was too much. The Police Department will now start citing people for nonessential travel. Coming up this morning on today in the bay, a popular San Francisco bakery is closing one of its locations. Good evening. Im dr. Anthony fauci. First, id like to thank all the older women in america who have sent me supportive, inspiring and sometimes graphic emails. Pitt broke t take time to thank dr. Fauci and all the Health Care Professionals and miley cyrus was the musical guests. Weve been perusing our sunday sitdown as social distancing prevents us from getting together can guests. We pulled another of our alltime favorites with the one and only Woody Harrelson. Woodys 35yearrun in hollywood began with eight seasons on the iconic show cheers where he won an emmy playing a bartender named woody. On the big screen harrelson has been nominated for three oscars and appeared in big budget films like the hunger games and star wars and next week hell be in marvel movie venom. We got together in austin, texas, for a sunday sitdown. When i was a kid i thought, yeah, id like to do things. Reporter Woody Harrelson always knew hed end up in show business one way or another. I remember this time a film crew came through lebanon, ohio and i thought, man, this seems like it would be a cool life. Reporter his career was born one day in a High School Library with some help from the king of rock n roll. They had these records you could get from tv guide. One of the records i got was called elvis golden oldies. Cut to im in the library and someone says, woody, do your elvis, you know. Im like, i cant do my elvis in here. Its too many people. Well, before you know it, they convince me and i started well bless my soul and i just started singing. Reporter still got it, by the way. Aw, thanks. Then it started getting a little older. Scares me to death and people are clapping and out comes this girl, robin rogers, who was one of the prettiest girls in the school, never paid me any time of day and came up and said, im with robin rogers, im with the drama club. I think you ought to try out for a play. I thought, well, robin, i will certainly try out for a play. Reporter elvis and robin inspired woody to a movie career that took off in 1992 with white men cant jump. You say this guys a chump, right . Reporter followed in quick success with decent proposal, Natural Born Killers and larry flynt which won harrelson an Academy Award nomination. He recently starred in hbo series true detective. What the hell do you think youre doing, man . Reporter but it all started with another woody. This is amazing. One of my buddies, said, hey, woody, theres this part in this show cheers, the parts called woody. You know, its from indiana, which we had gone to college in hanover, indiana. He said, you know, you ought to go audition for it. My first bachelor part no dates, right . No. Reporter how did you work through that part of be, the star of a huge show . I didnt think i was dealing with it very well, you know. I was reporter what does that mean . A mad man. Well, probably too much party and too much loose moral type of behavior, you know, as a Young Christian boy. Reporter that covers a lot of ground, loose moral behavior. Yeah. Reporter in 2008, harrelson married entrepreneur lowery lui, who also happens to be his former assistant. They have three girls and live in hawaii. Whats it like being the only man in the house . Theres a lot of yen energy around, which is probably good for a guy like me. I mean, ive got just some unbelievable daughters. Reporter harrelson and his two brothers were raised in lebanon, ohio, by their single mother diane, a secretary. My mom was, obviously, a very big influence on me. She was the parent who was actually there, you know, my dad was not around so much. She came to every play when i was in college. I dont mind having grown up a mommas boy and im still a mommas boy. Reporter harrelsons father was a career criminal who spent much of his sons youth in and out of prison. He died in a colorado penitentiary while serving two life sentences for killing a federal judge. What was the impact of that on you growing up and knew why he wasnt around . Im happy with who i am, but, yeah, probably could have you know, everybody could use two parents. Reporter walking along the river front in austin, the texasborn harrelson fits right in. I could see living here. Reporter harrelson is in town for the premiere of his netflix film the highwaymen, starring alongside Kevin Costner in the true story of two former Texas Rangers called back into service to track down and take out the infamous bonnie and clyde. And i think people looked at them as really robin hood types who were stealing from the rich, giving to the poor, which wasnt a fair account of who they were, but they somehow got just good pr, you know what i mean. It might be good to have a doctor look at you some time. Might be good to have a doctor look at you at some time. I aint got no bullet in me. Reporter were you aware of them before you were offered this part . No, i did not really know about manny, i didnt know about frank hamer. Its Great Entertainment but its kind of cool that we get to remedy some of these facts. When i heard kevin was doing it, i was really psyched. Im going to take them down. What a fine idea. Reporter woody is getting good reviews for his performance in the highwaymen but the threetime oscar nominee stopped worrying about awards a long time ago. Youve been nominated for oscars before, including most recently for three billboards. Is it important to you to some day get an oscar . Do you think about that stuff . Not at all. I honestly dont. I knew with the last three billboards, i voted for sam rosswell, his performance was astoundingly great. I feel like i got an award with my life. Reporter you got to a place where your priorities shifted. It shifted completely. After the first major disappointment, that was the golden globe for larry flynt. I left the Golden Globes after and i just went home. Reporter did you really . I felt dejected. By the too many i got to the acardmy awards im not going to win and im going to have a [ bleep ] night. Thats how its been. Im psyched to come to the party. I dont give a [ bleep ] if i win and i know i wont. Reporter thats a good way to live. Enjoy the party. Yeah. Woody harrelson, ladies and gentlemen. Any guest who rolls up to the interview in a cowboy hat, denim pants and slippers has won me over before we even sit down. To hear about woody talk about his role on the hbo series true dedecktive and if he and math mcconaughey could get the band back together, listen on the sunday podcast. I highly recommend. You can find it on Apple Podcast or wherever you get yours. Its as if deep down the animals dna, their gps says, lets go there, and they did. People in boulder, colorado, know there are mountain lions nearby, but in the front yard . Dolphins moving in where the ferries used to run in italy. As coyotes roam vacant streets of San Francisco, cue tony bennett San Francisco reporter down in florida, its reptiles doing the reveling. Animals have to sense the monumental change in Human Behavior thats occurring. Reporter David Godfrey of the sea turtle conserve antsy says closed and quiet beaches are a godsend. This virus is causing people to do some of the things weve been asking them to do for a long time, like keep your lights dark during nesting season, slow down your boats. Reporter the critters are on the move in the National Parks, too. Taking a looksee in areas usually packed with people. Theyre pretty opportunistic. Theyre not being distracted by vitters and theyre spreading out and ord theres at least conversation about opening some of the National Parks again. Has anyone been assigned to alert the animals . Well, certainly were wanting to open the parks back up. You know, we get 300 million plus people to the parks. And, yeah, well have to get that memo out to the wildlife. Reporter sometimes we begrudge the intrusion of the Natural World into our busy lives. Nowadays, animals provide a nice distraction. If they could talk, they might say, you know, we were here first. For sunday today, harry smith, new york. Harry, thank you very much. This week we highlight another life well lived. The coronavirus is taking a big toll on our countrys military veterans with many longterm care facilities ravaged by the disease. The incredible heartbreaking story of one decorated world war ii veteran spans a century and two global pandemics. Philippe kahn was born a twin and son of a baker in new york city on december 5, 1919. In the middle of the influenza pandemic that eventually killed 50 Million People around the world. His twin brother, samuel, was one of them. The infant boy caught the flu and died just weeks after birth. Phillip grew up to serve during world war ii in the United StatesArmy Air Force where he was an engineer and a copilot. Kahn earned two bronze stars while fighting in the pacific, including at the battle of iwo jima. After the war, kahn became an electrical foreman. Among many other projects, helped to build the World Trade Center in new york city. He remained active and lived on his own right through the end of his life. When he got sick a few weeks back, he suspected it was coronavirus. A test after his death confirmed that. Kahns family says philip always carried a hole in his heart about the loss of his brother and talked about samuel often in his final days. Sergeant phillip kahn, a hero of world war ii now reunited with his twin brother samuel, died last week in westbury, new york. He was 100 years old. For most patients that have sensitivity its very common to have a gum Health Concern as well. But if you have sensitive teeth, you probably arent going to brush your teeth as effectivity because it causes pain. And if you see blood you should do something about it. You know, i talk to dentists every day and theyre able to recommend one product, new sensodyne sensitivity gum, to address both conditions at the same time. If we only treat one versus the other, the patients mouth is never going to be where it needs to be. Its really good dentistry to be able to recommend one product for patients that can address two conditions. You can be feminine and fierce. No sweat. Introducing new secret with essential oils.
