Well, ive got to tell you, depending where you are, it is pretty toasty. Lets head down to southern florida and show you that were talking about unprecedented april heat, unusually warm water, 10 degrees above average surrounding florida. What thats adding to is an awfully hot gulf. Warm water influencing the weather on land, cuba with the hottest temperature ever recorded last weekend. In southern florida, south florida on track for the hottest april record. Miami 97 degrees for april. They are talking awfully toasty. Here in the northeast, it feels more like march. Were talking detroit with a windchill of 22, same in boston, 30 in new york. It feels like 22 in pittsburgh. We all know the Coronavirus Crisis, economic crisis, and turned everything upside down. But we thought youd want to know about some surprising ways its actually helping our planet. Thats right, savannah. Its the 50th anniversary of earth day. With most of us staying home with this pandemic, its affecting the earth in some really striking ways. We talked to some experts about how this crisis will be preparing us for the ultimate climate emergency. Thats literally a coyote. Coyotes roaming the streets of chicago, working on landscaping in wales. In some places sea turtles nesting on beaches for the first time in years. We predict fewer interactions, with beach closures, we will see possibly more successful nesting events with the sea turtles. Wildlife around the world ranging freely in cities and ren cities and regions normally bustling with people just one of the days in which the coronavirus lockdown has quickly and dramatically changed our environment. Less foot traffic, less waste, less energy consumption, allowing certain animals to thrive and impacting the earths atmosphere as well. What kind of reductions have we seen . Weve seen reductions in Greenhouse Gas emissions, those gases that contribute to Climate Change but weve also seen reductions in typical air pollution, particulates, the smog weve seen markably amazing improvements in air quality. In india, for the first time in decades, majestic snowcapped peaks of himalayas revealed to the people more than 120 miles away last week in the normally polluted city of new delhi, clear skies. Here in the United States, the plummeting emissions were evident almost immediately two weeks ago los angeles, a city of nearly 4 Million People and 6 million cars registered the cleanest air on the planet while these signs of renewal are encouraging, climatologists say the change in the air is only temporary and not nearly enough. We could be seeing a reduction in our emissions this year in 2020 at the most probably 5 . While that may sound like a lot, for context, compare that to the roughly 8 that the International ClimateScience Community has told us we need to reduce emissions by year after year. When the world finally heals and our societies come back, is there a way to make these changes permanent without hurting our economy . We can have a Strong Economy but improve our air quality and they are taking steps in that direction. We can reduce emissions of Greenhouse Gases by switching from fossil fuels to renewable. Energy we know wind and solar work, we know they are economic we know they are growing very rapidly. As we come out of this, is there a silver lining. A pandemic or financial crisis is nobodys idea of a solution to the Climate Crisis at all but if we do look back and see we had a choice and the needle moves with the global environment, thats a reminder were in control and we have the responsibility and the ability to actually move that needle. And guys, were actually proud to say that nbc news has made reporting on Climate Change a priority and so we are now happy to be joining and covering joining this group called covering climate now. Its a Global Journalism Initiative committed to more and better coverage. Its a story that isnt going to be going away any time soon. Were going to be there to report on it, including our nbc news climate unit so were very excited to announce this Alliance Coming up. That is fantastic news. What about an unintended consequence of all this, too, al, huh . Yeah. It really is of course, once we start ramping back up, were going to see an uptick in pollution again. The challenge is how can we keep these levels lower but bring our economy back to speed. Mr. Roker, thank you very much good sir. San jose reaching 76. And some low 80s for santa rosa while San Francisco will stay in the 60s today. We will continue on with above normal fmts that will feel like summer for a lot of the inland valleys. Were seeing more of that next week and for San Francisco just enough of an ocean breeze to keep it cooler there and along the coastline. Were looking at some mid to upper 60s extending into the next several days and no chances of rain here. Looks like a lot of sun coming our way for the bay area. The question this morning, could this Coronavirus Crisis be even more difficult this winter. The cdc director is out with a disturbing new warning about that. Tom costello joins us with that and the three things hes watching today. Tom, good morning to you. Good morning, savannah. Just in context, weve had 44,000 deaths so far nationwide, and the death toll continues to rise. Now the cdc chief is warning that we may see the next wave of this next fall, next winter become even worse than this first wave because it will be coupled with the seasonal flu. Dr. Deborah birx at the White House Task force talked about it treatments. Were also hoping by that time that we have additional Treatment Options for people with covid19. We dont know if it will be worse. I think this has been pretty bad. When you see what has happened in new york, that was very bad. Meanwhile, tremendous concern this morning that the governor of georgia is opening up that state, and in the view of many its coming too early as the death toll continues to rise nationwide and in georgia. On friday hair salons, barber shops, even tattoo parlors and Bowling Alleys will be allowed to open in georgia. Several mayors say far too early and risks a spike in deaths. Also this morning the senate has passed 484 billion aid package meant for Small Businesses after the first 350 billion ran out. The new money is meant for Small Businesses after several Large Companies took advantage of the First Program and managed to ge going to happen. Hoda, back to you. Tom, thank you. Now to our network wide series focused on the search for solutions. Weve talked a lot about the importance of testing, detroit, which has more deaths per capita from the coronavirus than any major city except new york, testing is now being made available to all essential workers. Nbcs Morgan Radford joins us with more. Hey, morgan, good morning. Reporter hi there, hoda, good morning. Thats right. The mayor effectively says he has about 1,000 available tests every single day. Thats why hes able to offer them to all eligible essential workers at testing sites like the one here behind me. So now were not just talking about Emergency RespondersLike Police Officers or firefighters but this time it includes every day people like daycare workers, Grocery Store clerks, essentially anyone who still has to report to duty every single day. But now the question this morning is will other cities follow suit. This morning, the city of detroit is taking unprecedented action in the fight against covid19. With nearly 8,000 cases and more than 700 deaths, the city is now the first in the country to offer testing without a prescription or symptoms of the virus to all essential workers. That includes food handlers and employees at restaurants and Grocery Stores. Once a company says i want all of my workers to be able to be tested, youre saying thats allowed. Thats it. For detroit mayor mike duggan, its the next battle in a brutal war. Youre a Grocery Store and youre essential, your employee schedules, they drive through, get swabbed and well send the test off to the lab in new jersey and have results back a few days later. You as an employer will know that everybody coming to work is covid19free. Right now were heading to the testing site. This is where you need to go if you need to get that covid19 test. I didnt take an actual test. But city officials showed us how the process worked. If you are testing, you drive up to the tent. The young lady or man will come out to the side of the car. Okay. They are fully covered. Yes. Nationwide, less than 2 of the population has been tested. Around 4 Million People. So state and local governments are expanding testing on their own especially for the most vulnerable. West virginia has become the first state to begin testing all nursing home residents and staff. In california, the city of torrence is offering free testing to atrisk senior citizens. Even Busch GardensAdventure Island will offer drivethrough testing. Back in detroit, these essential workers say testing will get them back to business. I absolutely feel safer. I think its going to give not only safety for us as workers, but the more people that get tested, the better its going to be for everybody. And they deliver. If you or anyone you know are looking for a test, it basically depends on where you live. Basically a lot of the city and states require three things to prove youre eligible for the test. One, many require you to show symptoms. Two, some places require you to actually have a doctors prescription for that test. Or three, show that youre part of a vulnerable population. For example, you might have a preexisting condition. The first thing you should do is go to your doctors office. Or number two, you go to your city or states local Health Department and they will tell you exactly what you need to show in order to get that test. All right. Morgan radford in detroit. Meanwhile, iran stunned the world overnight with a surprise launch of a rocket that tehran says placed its First Military satellite into orbit. The claim comes at a time of increased tension with the United States over Irans Nuclear and missile programs. Iran did not specify what role that satellite will play. Tehran did deny those u. S. Charges that the Space Program is a secret cover for the development of longrange missiles. Savannah. Chipotle has agreed to pay a record 25 million fine over the norovirus outbreak that sickened customers across the country a few years ago. The restaurant chain was charged with violating federal food safety guidelines. Chipotle admitted to a pattern of infractions that included storing food at the wrong temperatures and keeping sick restaurant employees on the job. Federal prosecutors said more than 1,000 customers got sick during a series of outbreaks between 2015 and 2018, hoda. All right. 8 09 now. Weve got our news covered. Its boost time. Country music star Blake Shelton is asking his fans to think about all the people who depend on local food banks at a time like this. Blake is donating 150,000 to a food bank in his home state of oklahoma because its one way that anyone anyone can have a positive impact. Lets help wipe out at least the hunger part of this pandemic shelton said even before the pandemic, one in four children in oklahoma was considered food insecure you can only imagine, savannah, how great the need is in this moment. Glad he stepped up. I hope a lot of people are inspired by that we got another boost for you, a chicago couple, drew and whitney wolf they werent expecting their first child for another six lar early and had the babyo friday night because of the statewide lockdown, drew asked their relatives to wait outside the hospital window. A pandemic has the possibility of bringing us together in ways none of us would have been able to expect. Im so small said the mole. Yes said the boy, but you make a huge difference. Welcome back. We are all coping in different ways during the coronavirus welcome back we are all coping in different ways during the coronavirus outbreak one thing a lot of us have in common right now are some elevated levels of stress and anxiety, savannah. Theres no question about it. Allenges over the years. You recently got on a zoom call with another guy who has also really been forward and outspoken about his own struggles, nba star kevin love thats a good conversation now we get to get in on it. Yeah. I was really psyched to be able to talk to kevin the truth is hes doing great. It does take work every single day, especially in these times kevin has been honest about his journey on and off the court, dealing with depression and panic attacks. I talked to kevin before about how each of us manage our anxiety and how liberating it is to discuss things openly as we faced the coronavirus and all this unknown, we think this conversation has really never been as important as it is now. Good to see you, my man these are some crazy, crazy times. I wanted to check in on you. How are you doing personally with all this . Personally im okay, just been trying to navigate a really, really surreal and weird time right now. Kevin love is like many of us at the moment figuring out a strange new kind of normal. Every day feels like some new, something devolving, we dont know whats going to come. I think the unknown makes people uneasy including myself. Overall i feel pretty good. Cleveland cavaliers fivetime allstar has been outspoken about battling depression, fear, panic attacks. I had a moment i thought i was going to die i never experienced anything like that. I thought i was going to have a heart attack i was running around looking for something i couldnt find. I wanted air and ended up unconscious on the floor. With anxiety. Owe gratitude for that. Anxious times. People normal anxious, you, me, everybody. Have you been feeling and seeing that absolutely. Just kind of like you said, a lot of people that were mildly anxious or had feelings like that have stepped into a place where that unknown is making them even more anxious they dont know when they are going to work again, what this is going to look like, how this is fog to change us coming out of this. Love remains grateful as hes taking a step back to embrace this quarantine time at home along with his girlfriend kate and their dog. Mostly we have a similar routine every day. We watch a lot of movies, a lot of films, working out, making sure were doing that, keeping our mind right, super creative in the morning or at night taking a big step back and just in and out, just breathing. What book are you reading its funny. Im actually reading the wolf of wall street. Wow. A great book, i feel like the guy is telling my story, my age of anxiety. When it comes to managing anxiety during the crisis, we both find creating a routine is critical to our Mental Health and its not easy. Like you, my mind gets racing so i need mental focal points. Structure really helped me once we had a schedule for the kids they were going to get up at 9 00 were going to do the pledge of allegiance like in school, help them work out. Whats helped you. The same thing. I have my morning routine but taking that time to operate myself from my devices and getting things done, i think, alleviates that stress. Another really important key is keeping Human Connection both near and far. Social distancing doesnt mean social isolation. People are lonely right now but you dont have to fall into that isolation. Tell me more about that. No. That can be really tough get on your zoom, facetime theres times throughout the day, myself, ive got 10 minutes, im going to pick up and call a teammate i havent talked to or, you know, a friend back home or my sister. While hes taking a step back to reset, love is also stepping forward and supporting his local community, buying hundreds of meals for Health Care Workers and making a giant pledge to arena staff. You put 100 grand right out of your foundation into their pockets. Now your organization and teammates have stepped up. Why was that so important . It was really important to me to help the people that have helped me along in my story. Ultimately during this scary time, love says weve got to lean on each other like never before, because in some way or another, were really all in this together. Coming out of this, i think, you know, the worse thing that can happen is were unchanged. I think we will change and find different ways to communicate and just cherish each other in the moment were in. Guys, theres no real straightforward so whats the answer whats the one, two, three what do i do to not be anxious its different for everybody the one thing kevin and i went back to was just that, people talking. In an article i wrote for prevention magazine, even though i was one of the millions suffering in silence until i wasnt one of them not talking, not hitting a loved one up on zoom or reaching out to a loved one and saying i ond dont feel so great. Just Start Talking it will do wonders for you you might wonder what kevin says about the nba and getting back on the court its in his blood. Hes trying to be patient. He trusts his bosses in the nba. He will go back when its safe he did say since it was the first league to officially stop the game, maybe they can be the first ones to get back to it. That was such a helpful conversation, buddy. You have no idea thank you, carson wishing the best for people. Yeah. Hopefully it opens up that path of communication just share it and it will become smaller, hopefully let us turn to al now and get a check of the weather good morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. Andrew zimmer is the host of msnbcs whats eating america. Andrew, good to see you, sir good morning to you. Good to see you. So first of all, you contend that its actually very easy to grow your own food no matter where you live so for folks down south, obviously, the warmer parts of the country, they can start planting right now for folks in this part of america, maybe not so much just yet. What do we need to get started the best way to extend your growing season is to start growing indoors now. You can do that in a window box. You can do that with a grow light and acclimate plants as they get older and extend your growing season theres so much ambiguity and uncertainty now. Were looking for something to do indoors, decrease the anxiety. Everyone asking me what can we do today to cover Food Supplies issues this covers the basics there are easy athome kits that include compostable pots these wonderful seed pods you drop in cool water and let those sort of warm up for an hour or so this is one i put in 45 minutes ago that actually sprouts the seeds directly out of this small little compressed soil pellet. Whats really wonderful about that, in about two weeks it gets to be is older. Here is some kale that is a couple weeks older than that when it gets to be nice and ambient temperature, cooler night but well beyond freeze every season has its recommendations. You can go on any garden website and find out information often the information is on the back of the seed packets about what zone youre in and when to bring it indoors acclimate your plant by placing it outde weve got about a minute left. I nt to quickly talt freezing. The thing is, we want to reduce waste in america. When you have kale starting to go bad, place it in boiling salted water, blanche it for a little while i just did this with carrots a few minutes ago. Place them in a ziploc bag, grand prix your sharpie. Mark and date your bag so you know when it went into the freezer and freeze your own vegetables then you can saute them, make soups. Youre going to cut down on trips to the supermarket, reduce the problem in america, which is so, so important now Victory Gardens got us through two different world wars people were growing their own, canning and processing their own. Right now is the best time to practice your home skills with your family while on quarantine, and its a great activity to do together that makes the world a better place. Thank you thats a perfect day to program up on this earth day by the way, kitchen goals there. Andrews kitchen is like nothing youve probably ever seen.
