Reporter referring to the coronavirus as the invisible enemy, President Trump tweeting that he will sign an executive order temporarily suspending immigration into the united states. This is how he has sustained his support with his base. Reporter a Senior Administration official tells nbc news that the move had been under consideration for a while and that the move is necessary to fight covid19 and save american jobs. The president s decision is a right decision in his own right. Other countries are doing the same thing because the way this virus is spreading. Reporter the announcement came a few hours after a White House Briefing in which he insisted the country is in good shape when it comes to coronavirus testing, downplaying governors pleas for federal help. Meanwhile, immigration has long been an issue that has energized mr. Trumps base. This executive order, if it is actually signed and not challenged, will separate families, and it will create a chaotic system and definitely increase the chaos within the immigration system. Reporter the president has already halted incoming travel from the uk, europe, and china by nonamerican citizens. Professor taylor says that was a good move because of the nature of the virus, but he believes that the timing of this executive order is only meant to distract and keep his base loyal. Cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. All right. This is a look at where the bay area stands right now in terms of infections. We now have more than 6,500 confirmed cases of covid19 and 211 deaths. San francisco reported 59 new cases today, putting their total over 1,200. Santa clara is close to hitting the 2,000 mark. Now, we want to know when will our shelter at home order end. Today Governor Newsom promised that in 48 hours, hell unveil a more specific reopening plan. He also briefly explained his approval to relax stayathome orders in some Southern California counties. We have a process to adjudicate those and to begin to dialogue with our team and their local health teams to make sure its a healthbased decision. We still as a state have to be careful when we gradually begin opening, adding this virus knows no boundaries. To more positive signs in the fight against the virus and flattening the curve. In the hardest hit south bay, one hospital is taking down its Surge Capacity tents. Good Samaritan Hospital says those tents are not needed anymore. Nbc bay areas ian cull has the story. While officials warn this fight is still far from over, right here in this area of the san Jose Los Gatos border, there are some encouraging signs. You can find them right outside of this hospital. Good Samaritan Hospital was the first in the county to put them up outside of the e. R. To screen covid19 patients and have more beds in case of overflow. We had one of the first patients in the entire state of california, and thats why we put up the surge tents originally so we would be ready for it. Reporter but now theyre not needed. The chief nursing officer says people are able to shelter in place more easily in this suburb, and its not as bad as first expected. The number of cases that are being hospitalhospitalized, num cases in the icu in general, weve seen that decrease week after week. Reporter while its the first hospital to take its tents down, brown says others in the south bay like regional are still being hit hard. And overall as a county, the Public Health department now tracks case numbers by the day the positive person was tested, not the day they got their results. So while there was an average of just 26. 5 new cases a day last week, which is less than half the week before, those numbers are expected to increase as results come in. The county also today doubling down on the need to keep up physical distancing. The six feet is for when you go to the Grocery Store or you go to get medications. Its not for having happy hours in your front yard or, you know, visiting your sister and her kids in their driveway. Reporter hospital administrators say those tents are now in storage. That would be helpful in determining if anyone developed immunity. 1,600 people have signed up for the test, which is almost the towns entire population. Hayward able to get 10,000 masks specifically for essential businesses. They arent surgical masks or the n95 masks, which those are being saved for health care workers. After two weeks of limited service during the shelter in place order, muni says its ready to restart from routes that went out of Service Later this week.
