On this first day. Reporter today when we checked in at long lines and stores, most people seem to be wearing masks. Most but not all. Enforcement wont begin until next wednesday to give people time to prepare. We have a little bit of cloth masks left. Reporter Caitlyn Squires is a supervisor at cole hardware. Customers have been interested in face coverings recently and she expects that to climb. There has been a slight influx this morning. I think folks are becoming aware of the mandate, so we are expecting that there will be a surge definitely. Reporter theyre working to get more of them and different types but its best to check ahead. In San Francisco, the mayor announced new requirements for people to wear face coverings, a scarf or a bandanna will do so long as they cover the nose and mouth at essential businesses like Grocery Stores and transit. This applies to workers and residents. I think its safer for now. Till they figure something out or theres, you know, some vaccine for it. I think its just better to be safe. Reporter its hard to say for sure if more people are wearing face coverings this weekend, but what was occasional for some is becoming mandatory. We actually probably werent wearing them every time, but we now are. Reporter Health Officials point out this is not a replacement for sheltering at home or social distancing to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Meantime at zazie theyve made changes. Their food has become takeout. Theyre even offering fresh groceries and kitchen staff will adjust too. Well actually be doing it before its completely mandatory, and theyre also saying that people who come into these businesses also have to be wearing a mask. Reporter we spoke with one man who wore a bandanna over his nose and mouth and he said it was his first time doing that at a store. This motel 6 behind me here is part of what the governor calls the project roomkey initiative, which will be at hotels and motels across the state. Now, the governor says that the state struck a deal with motel 6 and now with the rooms that theyll be providing, the state has more than 15,000 rooms to house the homeless during this pandemic. Now, the priority, he says, will go for homeless who have tested positive for covid19, those who have been exposed to the virus, the elderly, and those with Chronic Health conditions. He says while Santa Clara County has been out front in helping these hotel bids, other jurisdictions have not. Where cities are blocking these efforts at a time of crisis, the most vulnerable californians on our streets, seniors that are just desperate for a key, a lock, a place of their own, the dignity that comes with that. Reporter now, he says already 4,200 rooms are being used and the state has partnered with Chef Jose Andres and his world central kitchen to provide those folks three hot meals a day. He says also in the language with the motel 6 agreement, that they left room for the possibility that down the road once the pandemic is over, that there might be some possibility of having some permanent sites to house the homeless. Reporter local joggers and surfers were out early taking advantage of reopened beaches on the first weekend theyve been reopened. Were excited about it. We dont want to take advantage of it, and if theres people too many people surfing, were not going to go out. Reporter from antioch to oakland bay area residents also made the trip down to the beach. Didnt know the beach was open but we just came down to get some twowheel therapy. Reporter the majority of businesses in the area including the board walk still remain closed, making the reopening of the beach beneficial for some who have chosen to stay open. But this worker isnt sold. I personally think its not a good idea to have the beaches open right now. I think thats a slippery slope. I think people are going to start abusing the privilege of having such open space. Reporter its not just opinions about reopening that seem to differ. There seems to be some confusion with what can and cannot be done on the beach. Patrolling Santa Cruz Police officers asked this beachgoer and this local fisherman to pack up their things. They said that we can walk, exercise, but we cant sit, hang out. The local fishermen who rely on fishing cant utilize the beach or the cliffs or the wharf for fishing. Sergio, what are you learning . Reporter well, this is a shooting, an officerinvolved shooting that happened just around 3 12 this afternoon. I can show you there are still Police Officers still at the scene of this walmart in san leandro. We know this all happened just inside the front doors there. What we understand from the police is that they were called here for report of a robbery, and then they found someone that had a bat in his hands. Then they discovered that there was not, in fact, a robbery but that man still had the bat. They did use their tasers to try to subdue him. He did not release that bat, they say, and so then both officers used their sidearms. They did open fire. That man was killed on scene. Right now investigators, they are still piecing together all of the details as to exactly how this all unfolded. We are expecting a little bit of an update on the details that they have since gathered. Reporting live in san leandro, im Sergio Quintana, nbc bay area news. Sergio, thanks very much. Dr. Levinson writes a prescription that goes like this. Make sure you get outside every day. Soak in some natural light. Find ways to relax during the day and stay away from screens before bedtime. This years Northern CaliforniaCherry Blossom festival is not canceled exactly. Like a lot of events right now its just moving online. Organizers put together eight hours of cultural performances and other entertainment for those missing the real thing. And a lot of people are. The annual San Francisco event is billed as the largest Cherry Blossom festival on the west coast. We have a link to the blossom in place on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. We here at nbc bay area are a proud sponsor of that fantastic event. All right. Time to check in with rob mayeda, and he has moved back inside, i believe. You were outside for the 5 00, back inside for the 6 00. Yeah, and we were watching some cooling temperatures. A bit breezy outside and its one of the cooler changes were going to see as we wrap up the weekend. Today, though, i think the sunnier of the two weekend days as you see San Francisco. Youre looking at those sunny skies but a bit cool now as the breeze picks up. 60 degrees with the wind out of the west at 17 miles per hour. So its a bit blustery around San Francisco, and its comfortably cool in san jose. Not quite 70 degrees today. A high of 69. Right now 64 degrees. But as the wind picks up and the weather actually trends progressively drier, if you have allergies this may not be such a good week for you. Were still looking at oak pollen in the relative high range and grass pollen pretty high. Of course all the rain we had in march and the beginning of this month has allowed those hillsides to green up once again. So if you get those pollen issues with grass pollen, those numbers still running moderately high. Tomorrow, temperatures mostly in the 40s to near 50. Areas of low clouds and probably some drizzle in a few spots as we move closer to the afternoon hours, were going to see again those places that have those onshore winds and drizzle start to break up for the afternoon, at least inland, with our highs tomorrow mainly in the mid to upper 60s. So were in a bit of a cool down before the sevenday forecast. As we move forward, well continue to start to warm things up over the next few days. Notice the satellite view here. Areas of low clouds and its kind of hard to see but its a weak weather system here approaching from the west. Thats going to add a little extra lift to the clouds other than the drizzle we have and a few areas for the morning. Notice how we get a midday break form afternoon and the clouds will thicken up again right around this time tomorrow evening into monday. There comes that slight chance of seeing some showers. Now, rain totals are really quite low. Best odds of getting measurable precip will be for areas around lets say the Santa Cruz Mountains or parts of the south bay. Once that system clears, High Pressure is the only thing thats going to be doing any rain around the bay area. The rain of High Pressure taking those storms, sending them way off to the north. As youre about to see, that sevenday forecast is really set to climb. If you look closely here, palo alto into the lower 60s to start the week. Then by the end of the week, getting closer to 80. And for places around the north bay, its possible if this high strengthens the way we think it could, by next weekend its possible we might see mid80s in the forecast. So the warmup for places like San Francisco, youll notice, should put us into the low 70s towards the end of the week and as we approach next weekend. Youll notice here inland spots. Once we hit the 70s on tuesday, it will be soaring into the mid and upper seef70s. By next weekend we could be looking at some low to mid 80s in the warmest places by next weekend, which means that pollen count is going to be flying pretty high as we go through the week. So the sniffles and sneezes index or the kleenex index as we like to say sometimes set to ten over the next seven days. Back to you. Still ahead, hailing our heroes.
