I have two young children, so the sooner that this can pass, and we get back to schools opening, and things like that, and this mitigates things, then yes, by all means. They also want to remind you that a mask is not a replacement for social distancing and sheltering at home. Instead, the mask serves as one more step toward the new normal. This will also help us in the future and also now, as we hope to be able to relax the stayathome order. By then, people will already be in the hablt of wearing Face Coverings. Well, startling new information out of stanford. It shows there may be 50 times more coronavirus cases than are on record. The results come from the Antibody Test that weve been telling you about that stanford is conducting. Researchers there recruited volunteers on facebook, 3,000 people were tested, for antibodies on april 3rd and 4th. Stanford researchers discovered that about two and a half to 4. 2 of People Living in Santa Clara County carry the antibodies and the virus may have infected between 48,000 and 81,000 people by the beginning of april. Thats a 50 to 85, 50 too 85 times more than the official number of cases during that time period. We have to mention that the study has not been peer reviewed. Peer review is the scrutiny of being accurate by other doctors and those outside the scope of the study. Our major problem skis sincy one is a lack of testing. Pinpoint as we speak is holding his daily briefing. It has been going on for more than 90 minutes now. A live look at the white house in washington, d. C. And now, in a teleconference earlier today, with the White House Task force, democrats argue that opening the economy couldnt proceed without nationwide testing. Now, in President Trumps briefing, which is still happening, he insisted that testing has gone well. However, dr. Anthony fauci acknowledged the problems with testing, in weeks past and says communication and supply chains have improved. If these things are done correctly, and i believe they can, we will have, and there will be enough tests to allow us to take this country safely through phase one. There have been some great partisan voices in the media and politics, who have spread false and misleading information about our testing capacity, totally false and misleading. Dr. Birx says the tests of people, whether people have the virus, are complex, and there will never be enough, so antigen tests which show who has had the virus, and is immune, will be the key focus. Well, here in the bay area, would he have surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases. And in the last 24 hours, almeda county reporting 53 new cases. Santa clara and San Francisco county, adding more than 30. Today, were remembering bun of those lives lost. A lifelong oakland resident who left a lasting mark in the east bay, as a business owner, a grandfather, and almost a 50year member of the oakland rotary club. Garvin thomas shares his story. When g more fun than this, his family certainly cant recall it. That is gene behind the wheel of his beautiful newly purchased 1964 Lincoln Continental convertible in last years fourth of july parade. Gene was a car guy going way back, you see. To hes teenaged days growing up in oakland. He built his first car from scratch. His daughter jacqueline knows the stories well. Salvaging cars. R restoring them. And by the time he was old enough for a license, he had a working car. Reporter as good as gene was in car, he was better in business. Eventually owning five bay area branches of Johnstone Supply store, and good with members and had a special talent dealing with people. It made him a perfect fit for almost 50 years in the rotary club of oakland. Incredibly gregarious. Unbelievably outgoing. Loved being with other people and working with other people. It was in rotary, in fact, that gene met the love of his past 20 years of his life, wendy howard. He had an enormous heart. He loved movies with a happy ending. I dont know how many times we saw pretty woman, he knew it by heart. Gene fell ill with covid19 not long after a trip to the east coast in march. And jacqueline, who had recovered from covid19 herself was allowed to visit him. She spent an hour by his bedside the day before he died, able to give gene a message from his family, and his community. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. We appreciate the story. Recession or depression, either way, our economy is at historic lows. Today Governor Newsom formed a team of business and political heavy weights to help with this economic recovery. And on our 6 00 newscast, we will be joined by tom steyer. We have been telling you that social distancing is really the key to all of this. So lets look at the impact of social distancing, and what it has done when it comes to the number of doctor visits. The map that youre looking at is the number of outpatient visits to doctors, for all flulike illnesses including covid19. So not hospitalizations, but people actually going to the doctor, it is for the week that ended march 21st. The dark, dark area, the red, a lot of doctor visits. You can see it here, on the map, as well. Okay, jumping two weeks ahead, you can see cases going down nationwide. A lot of the states then go into this kind of green range, right . California going from orange to yellow instead, and new york also moving down one level, from purple to red up here. Last week, the number of visits dropped everywhere. California now also in the green level. Along with a majority of the country. New york and new jersey going lighter with a much lighter shade of red. Now, the drop is slower there, than in the rest of the country, so their hope of course is to move into a yellow and green zone as well. Well, theres a promising drug made by a Bay Area Company that could be the first approved treatment for covid19. Its not a new drug necessarily but being repurposed so to speak. Lets bring in janelle wang with has the details. Janelle . The one in chicago that just wrapped up 125 patients were treated with redvesavir and most recovered so well, they were discharged in a week, but two patient disdie. Even though this drug shows great promise, he doesnt believe all shelter at home restrictions will be lifted at all this year. I think for the foreseeable future, were going to, you know, be in this new normal, under the postcovid19 world, as it is. And i think, you know, until we get a vaccine in place, or we develop some type of herden immunity, meaning most of us have gotten the virus and survived it and we have some kind of immunity to it, were probably going to meet in the middle as far as time line goes for that. But i think this is going to be the new normal for at least six to nine months. At the very minimum. The doctor also mentioned another treatment showing great promise, serum made from the blood of patients who have survived covid19 and developed antibodies and the serum is infused into sick patients. Ucsf is one of hospitals testing the treatments. A lot of things in the works. These two treatments proving to be most effective right now, but a lot of testing still needs to be done. Raj, jessica . Lets bring you outside right now, to our satellite and radar picture, we do have a system just offshore, and that is helping to bring in some fog, as you move through tomorrow morning, and it is a little bit breezy out there, winds 10 to 25 miles an hour. And no rainfall. A lot of it stayed off to the south but certainly a huge, huge change from what we experienced earlier this week with those 80s. You can see some of the top gusts right now in napa, at 22 to 27 miles an hour. And 10 to 20 out there, across contra costa county, and almeda counties. By the afternoon, well get some gradual Sunshine Building in. So i think weve got a pretty good day shaping up for us tomorrow. Well begin with upper 40s and low 50s, down as low as 48 in the trivalley and another cool spot will be the north bay at 47. So we have that overcast to begin, some sun breaking out, once we hit the afternoon, as the temperatures will drop a couple more degree, and that will put us down to 63 in gilroy and 65 in san jose. And right over to the east bay, 68 in concord, and back to hayward, and 63, it will remain breezy tomorrow, five to 15 miles an hour for most spots, and so when that wind kicks up, it will make it feel even a little bit chillier. 63 in san mateo. San francisco, the gustiest winds out of the southwest at 14, and 5 a in the marina. 55 in the maria. My extended forecast shows that chance of rain, remaining once we hit monday. But i lowered the totals. Only. 05 to. 15 of an inch. And a warmer 68 in San Francisco by next friday. Across the inland valleys, well go down as cool as 64 on monday, with that chance of some spotty showers. Then we go up, up, up. By next friday, 82, that will bring us about 10 degrees above average, and that would make day 39 inside with covid19, and with covid19, we know a lot of us are still trying to order food, it is taking a week or longer to get some deliveries. A cool thing to look at, cucumber, basil, tomatoes, squash, and lemon trees, those are excellent things to plant here, in the bay area, with our microclimate, in april, and raj and jess, as i just mentioned, we did score some basil, some summer squash and also some tomato seeds. Now, a lot of these are getting sold out online. But i dont know, folks at home, if youve been thinking about it, maybe head online and check it out, because what else better to do with our time than maybe get down on our hands and knees and start a garden, right . Youre right, jeff. And tomatoes, usually it is right before mothers day, we plant them. So were right in that zone. Getting in on the tomatoes. And ill probably need some coaches back here at home.
