The outbreak in these everyone is working a little differently now. Jurisdvetwo weeks period we have good surveillance that look at flu like illness and for illnesses like respiratory disease. Were seeing those drop substantially. There are a number that have limited activity. The critical thing is let the states look at it, their Public Health systems, and give them a list of some of the key preparedness activities they need to have, the ability to do Rapid Testing for new case identification and Contact Tracing, their ability to test and diagnose individuals that do present with a flulike illness. There are a number of preparation events that the state has to really get in place, we encourage to get in place as they begin to reopen their state. Maybe county by county, maybe state at large. So we can still answer your calls. But its going to be a step by and we are monitoring our system 24 7 step, prudent process. No question about it. We talked last week, and i remember you said we need to to ensure that we have a fast reliable network, have testing for the virus aggressively employed before you keep the customers connected, and making sure people are staying safe. Can think about reopening. And were still on the road. Solving Critical Issues as they arise. Are we there yet . Are we there yet anywhere . I think theres certain jurisdictions that we do. I think people have to look at what the real strategic role of go to xfinity. Com prepare. Testing is. Thank you. At this point, its to make that rapid early diagnosis, which then you can affirm and isolate and do the contacts and test, figure out other contacts, test, isolate other individuals. Its the traditional Public Health containment. Theres a number of jurisdictions that are very close to having that capability. Were going to work with them. Cdc is going to work with all the jurisdictions to try to help them correct those gaps because it is going to be really critical you have that Public Health infrastructure as you begin to loosen up these mitigation restrictions. When you wish upon a star upa whatever you feel about testing in your particular community, i dont think theres anywhere where youre in the position of anybody who wants a test can get a test. That kind of raises the question, how do we get a good picture of where this virus is especially since so many people displaying no symptoms at all do you want to build a snowma come on lets go and play i never see you anymore come out but can still spread it. Yeah, savannah, thats a the door its like youve gone away all right if youre melting, raise your hand back at 7 30, some special really important question. Individuals that actually are were you watching that might. Fn infected that dont demonstrate symptoms. Were establishing a series of you finish that song, in your important surveillance points, sites through the county sleep. I have a dvr. Focusing on Nursing Homes, longterm care facilities. Nbcs Gadi Schwartz got an up close look at how their work has recently changed. Gadi, good morning. Yeah, good morning, savannah. It is such a weird time, especially in a lot of places. Were here like in manhattan beach. Its basically become against the law to be around too many people or to not wear a mask in public. For police and sheriffs deputy, they say it is especially hard because unlike things like robberies or violence, there is really no clearcut bad guy to chase down, no suspect to arrest, just people who either accept how dangerous the situation has become or those who still refuse to believe it and put everybody else at risk. Nationwide, we have seen a growing number of coronavirus crackdowns, stores cited for refusing to close down to police breaking up because of the social distancing rules. Even a paddleboarder arrested on the water after a beach shut down. The mayor saying to call if nonessential places are open. You know the expression about snitches. In this case snitches get rewards. Reporter by now most cities have ordinances allowing for arrest and citation if people dont comply. We went for a ride along with the l. A. Sheriffs department. Because of social distancing, ride along means going behind. When youre going by these parking lots and retail shops and all these streets that are o from a truly booming economy where we were seeing packed parking lots and all types of retail outlets to seeing nothing. Its frightening to be honest. We headed to a local walmart. We see people out walking their dogs wearing face masks. Thats just not right. Just driving around it looks like 90 , 95 of the people weve seen are wearing masks. Its taken on a whole new level of awareness, a little bit of civic pride, too, and some Community Pride of being a part of something. At walmart we spot some people not wearing masks. But instead of giving them citations hey, maam, i see you dont have a mask. Here is a couple of masks for you. Today they are handing out protection, masks donated to the Sheriffs Department by the community. Take care. You, too. Were trying to actually provide a service to them and let them know were here for them not against them. Here. Deputies also trying to adjust to a difficult new normal. This the toughest time in Law Enforcement ive seen in 30 years. Its not like a riot, a fire, a flood. Theres no tangible enemy. Theres no suspect that my deputies and i can go look for and take to jail or something. Its very, very hard for the public to understand it as well. Gadi, it seems like by and large the people there in los angeles are adhering to those strict social distancing guidelines. What about local businesses, are yeah. For the most part, most businesses deemed nonessential. So far for 10 Million People, only around 50 or so have been given citations. Manhattan beach early on people were not getting the message to stay away from this pier so police here gave out more than 100 citations, each one of them running about 1,000. Gadi schwartz in los angeles. Gadi, thank you. All right. So what do you say we take a look at the weather, mr. Roker. Hey, al, morning. Hey, guys, good morning. Yeah, craig, thats right the first two installments of st the highly anticipated documentary series with all that never seen before footage of Michael Jordans final season with the Chicago Bulls take a quick look. Competition is an addiction every day is a battle. Get out there. Boom. 48 hours. No matter what we did, seemed like it was a story. Im telling you to go out there and win at any cost. Oh, my gosh, that looks so good the bulls granted unprecedented access to a film crew during their entire 1998 run but the footage has never been shown before that documentary is also going to examine jordans entire career it features over 100 interviskb course, Michael Jordan himself were dying to see this one, craig. Friendly version. That one is two versions of the tenpart they are going to air one with all the athletes rough language in tact. The other a more kid friendly version. That one is going to be on espn2. Ten parts, ten hours apparently jordan himself, carson, guys, he sat for three interviews he sat for hours also, reportedly did not insist any particular part be taken out of the final cut i guess he had editorial control but fine with everything being in there. Craig, you interviewed him. Last year we talked about the doc. He said his chief concern was that people were going to watch this, and that their entire opinion of Michael Jordan, their opinion was going to change based on this documentary and not change in a favorable way. Wow. So hes very concerned about how he is going to come off. Yeah. We are back now. 8 12 friday morning with more of our series, the front lines. During the coronavirus outbreak, our doctors and nurses have changed more than you can imagine, that extra care for patients whose families arent allowed to be with them in the hospital patients whose familie arent allowed to be with them in the hospital. Harry harry smith has that story. The in dignity of the virus is how patients are dying alone. But doctors and nurses are providing a bridge between families. We are contacting family on facetime so they can talk to family members, often for the last time. But Craig Spencer fought and caught ebola treating victims of ebola in africa. In america now, its covid. Death, its horrible and hard regardless nnit dt with their family in the final moments hopefully makes it better. Nurse Mary Halliday of north Shore University hospital is visiting patients on her own time what happens when she provides that technological link can be remarkable. It was interesting to see that his breathing started to increase a little bit as they were talking to him. It was wonderful to watch. I had to keep reminding them, he hears you. He knows youre there. He may not be able to see you, but he knows your presence is here. At houstons methodist west hospital, nurse tabitha was taking care of 93yearold richard when his daughter, sean, reached out. She said, tabitha, would you stand in for me at my dads bedside because i couldnt be there. Tabitha made sure sean and her family were there, though it was by skype. He s a great dad he was, what an amazing grandfather he was and thanking him for the foundation of faith he had built in her life it was the last time he opened his eyes was when he heard his daughters voice. What did it mean to you to have tabitha at your fathers side in his last moments its the only kind of way i think that we had peace and comfort is because we got to see him. We got to say those things to him. But tabitha made that possible for us to do her vet who spent endless hours doing volunteer work he wanted to live to be 100, hoping for a shout out from al on the today show. Its lucky that i was his daughter i know that hes smiling down saying, hey, my life was not only worth living but one that made a difference until the end. So much life and death in such close proximity the victories then warrant celebration. We spoke with nurse amanda griffiths. When someone comes off a ventilator, what typically happens there. We call our codes and rapid responses and overhead play a clip of here comes the sun. Here comes the sun here comes the sun for today, harry smith. Boy, was that beautiful we are now joined by one of those heroes from harrys piece, emergency room doctor, director of medical health at Columbia University medical center. Dr. Spencer, good morning, so good to see your face this morning. Thank you. Thinking about two roles doctors and nurses are playing, not only physician but not only physician but hand holder, family member. How do you as a physician handle both of those roles and still be efficient as a doctor . Quite frankly, i think its one of the most important things we can be doing right now. Its nearly impossible to understand what family members are going through in this time being able to provide some type of connection, even as impersonal as skype or facetime video means so much to people, patients, families if thats what we spend the majority or big chunk of the time every day, i know that is potentially having a bigger impact than other stuff were doing. Dr. Spencer, you wrote something striking, about a husband and wife in the er one room, two patients, side by side, both covid, both sleeping. A sign hangs above each of their bed. One says wife, one says husband. In the whole er, they are the only ones who arent alone would you talk to us about that . When i was writing it, i didnt know if it was meant to be optimistic or sad, because really with the restrictions that we have around patients coming in right now, or patients families, were not o letting patients families come in because of risk to them, also restrictions on personal Protection Equipment its just not safe the only way to have a visitor this is something weve never seen before, husband and wives, partners in the emergency room at the same time. Weve seen it quite a few times in the past few weeks. Im happy they are together. I mean, im happy at that moment they were well and alive and have each other but we dont know what the future holds for either of them. You have such a unique perspective, not only are you a physician but you were a patient during the ebola crisis, treated in new york. You know what its like to be laying in bed and watching people covered up in all that gear with you and just the loneliness that that invokes. I shared this a couple days ago in Washington Post in an opinion piece. This feeling looking down as a physician, a nurse, its hard, because we still dont know exactly what works for this illness. Its so tough. But looking up as a patient is so much more difficult, because no matter what people say, no matter what your providers do, you feel toxic youre sick but at the same time youre worried you could infect any of them. You look up at them in goggles that are fogged or try to understand them through a mask that muddles your words. Its really disorienting and really quite sad for a patient as well as providers. You spoke with savannah a couple weeks ago when we were kind of on the front end of this and youre speaking to us today. How has your perspective changed on where we are with this virus . What were seeing right now is were seeing a decrease in the number of cases presenting to our emergency rooms, which is absolutely wonderful weve seen a ramping up in the amount of capacity we have in terms of beds. We still have very, very sick patients we still have a lot of deaths every day here in new york and across the country my concern is that when people start hearing about a decrease in deaths or decrease in cases or these ideas that we can start safely start opening up parts of the country in the next week, what people arent understanding is this is going to be with us for quite some time. Were going to have to continue to do physical distancing. Were going to have to go through a lot of testing theres still a lot of infections, death and preparation in front of us were not at the back end of this in some sense were still at the beginning. All right dr. Spencer, i know you have a busy day ahead of you. A big thank you to all of you and your colleagues. Give them a hug for us. Thanks. Lets turn to al. Hey, al. As we look at satellite radar we have snow falling through parts of the upper midwest and great lakes. Were looking at heavier rain down to the south. April snow today moving into the northeast. A taste of summer down through florida. Look for showers and thunderstorms down through the Lower Mississippi river valley sunny skies through the southwest, although a frosty start. Thats what going on around the country, here is whats happening in you the sun will do its best to peek through those clouds once again today as we track cooler weather in todays forecast. 67 degrees in san jose. Morgan hill, 65. And well still get a couple of 70s but no more 80s in the forecast. Concord 70 degrees. Oakland, 66. For the peninsula mix of sun and clouds. 63 for san mateo. In through San Francisco, the 60s as well. Over the next seven days, were tracking our next chance of seeing rain move in late sunday night into monday morning. Thats your latest weather. Guys all right, al you know what we could use right now . We could use some pop start. We could use some carson daly, and we could use jack daly where is jack daly i dont know. I dont know this is our Graphics Department for pop start. I dont know what youre talking about. Lets hope the first graphic gets up and running. First up, Prince William and duchess kate all right. The royal couple is getting candid about their time social distancing, talking to bbc about what its been like for their kids and how important it is to look after Mental Health now more than ever. Ups and downs for lots of families selfisolating. Children much older than louie they are aware i think im always surprised though you dont want to scare them and make it too overwhelming, i think it is appropriate to acknowledge. A lot of people are worried about Mental Health, maybe before, and suddenly this environment were in catches up with them quite quick. I think the most important thing is talking i think its always underestimated how much talking can do. Theres been a lot of focus on william goes on to joke the younger members of the royal family are a little more tech savvy when it comes to their Group Video Chats than some of the other members. But its good to see them talking about something so important like Mental Health especially now. Carson, you opened up about your Mental Health in an article for prevention this week and you were talking about anxiety. I did i was happy to have that opportunity. There it is. I didnt know it was made public and official yeah, great to have the opportunity to tell my story like i mentioned, as i shared some words in that, you never realize youre one of the millions suffering in silence until youre not that was a big thing for me. Like Prince William just said, it seems simple. We have different idiosyncrasies about it, anxiety, depression. Talking is the key you feel better when you talk. I hope that helps people. Definitely. Were going to have a lot more, by the way, on that next week im trying to work on some interviews to get going, especially now in isolation. A couple of tips i was very anxious my first week in isolation i found a couple of pointers that really helped settle me i look forward to sharing those on that topic next week. Back to pop start, we have Dwayne Johnson like so many of us, hes at home trying to keep his kids entertained. Imagine that like so many of us, he turns to movies to distract the kids, at least for a little bit his 2yearold daughter is that wouldnt be a problem except it starts with good old dad and she wants a sing along every time the caption here is the best part, he wrote for the 937th time today she wants daddy to sing along with maui she has no idea its the same person i have no idea what day it is, i am sure it ends with a y telling parents, get your sleep and cocktails when you can. Hes just like the rest of us. Exactly thats your pop start today. Thank you, honey. Have a good friday, carson. Some arms. Straight ahead bode and Morgan Miller join us live how you can get involved in a great cause, a new cause that captured their hearts. Savannah will talk with the millers coming up after your local news good morning to you. Its 8 26. Im marcus washington. A show of appreciation is under way for Health Care Workers in the south bay. At Oconnor Hospital in san jose. Firefighters, police and sheriffs deputies showed their support for the nurses and doctors on the front lines battling covid19. Kris sanchez is at the hospital. Shell join us at midday for a live report. Another event this morning was in gilroy. Santa clara county deputies there showing their appreciation for Health Care Workers who were just finishing their shift showing thanks to those Health Care Workers leaving for the day. In Santa Clara County fire is asking the public to do the same from home. The last thing they want is more people coming out there and potentially spreading coronavirus. Now lets get a look at the forecast for you. The sun will do its best to peek through those clouds once again today as we continue to track cooler weather in todays forecast. 67 degrees in san jose. Morgan hill, 65. And well still get a couple of 70s but no more 80s in the forecast. Concord 70 degrees. Oakland 66. For the pence la, a mix of sun and clouds. 63 in san mateo. The 60s through San Francisco. And over the next seven days, were tracking the next chance of rain move in sunday night into monday morning. Well have a local news update coming up in 30 minutes. What we do now will forever change our tomorrow. So lets do the right thing, today. Lets stay at home. Lets wash up. Lets always keep our distance please, six feet apart at least. Lets look after ourselves, as well as others. It will all be worth it. We can all do our part. So those on the front line can do their part. And when this is over, we will all, continue, to thrive. 8 30 now its a friday morning april 17th, 2020 sammy kotbs favorite. Theres a special reason were playing that classic from the rolling stone. They basically just scrambled all their resources and started immediately 501 c 3, they have 100 match every dollar that comes in goes to feeding doctors and frontline workers dealing with this. So far they have 24 hospitals. They have delivered 14,000 meals a week now they are just basically short on supplies so were just in the fundraising mode giving them run until may. Right now until may 1st is the money we have. We all kind of see the runway being through june 1st were trying to wrangle up some more its been incredible the response you get from the people that are doing this. It really is such an act of love the other thing i like about this idea, its helping the Restaurant Industry as well. A lot of restaurants we know have been so hard hit by the stayathome orders that now you guys are through this Organization Able to place these orders the restaurants are have the bu doing something good for their communities. Yeah, thats the biggest challenge of this. No one has ever faced anything like this before in any aspect so these restaurants that are local to these hospitals, in some cases the doctors or the Health Care Workers favorite spot, now they are able to support them, get a great meal i think more than anything its the emotional support. I think everybody feels pretty isolated the demands put on our Health Care System right now are unlike anything anyone has seen before. So i think knowing that people arly important for them, too just for the emotional boost to keep going yeah. You can get just a little and be part of this process well put the information on today. Com.
