Today the worldwide death toll topped 100,000 people. Thats according to the Johns Hopkins university. Italy has seen the most deaths than any other country, nearly 19,000. In the bay area, more than 45,000 reported cases, 122 people have died, and were going to focus here on Santa Clara County which continues to see the most cases, sant Claire County right now with more than 1400 infected people. Heres a deeper dive in Santa Clara County, which cities have the most infections. The bigger the circle, the more cases and you can see palo alto, top of the screen, top of the peninsula, with a lot of cases, palo alto has 57 people reported infected, and santa clara, with 54, and you can see the in between cities, mountain view, los altos, cupertino and sunnyvale with 65 cases. Well, its going to be a test of our ability to shelter at home. Thats what Santa Clara County supervisors are saying about this weekend. The problem they say is that people will want to celebrate easter and passover. And the weather will be nice. So it will be tempting. Many counties are shutting down their parks and open space, just this weekend, to prevent people from flooding outside. County leaders are reiterating their call for people to stay at home, and asking them to celebrate virtually. So love your families, take care of them, and make sure you stay away from them over this weekend. Right now, our shelter at home order is in place through may 3rd. Today, l. A. Expanded its stayathome order to may 15th. Suggesting that could be in our future as well. People in oakland will soon have a lot more space to get some fresh air, and maintain their social distance. Starting tomorrow, the city is closing nearly 10 of the city streets. More than 70 miles of roadway t vehicle traffic, as part of the slow streets program. Could other cities in the bay area follow suit . We have more from melissa colorado from one of the slow streets in oakland. If youve gone out for a run along popular places, you know how tough it is to share the single trail with dozens of others and still and try and maintain that social distance. Well, starting tomorrow, pedestrians, bicyclists, and runners, will be able to have full reign over certain city streets. I ride oakland every day, if i can. Now, more than ever, jason of oakland prefers a bike ride over a joy ride. But ev sce the stayatome order went io effect, he says he has seen a cluster of foot traffic at parks, trails, and even bike lanes. Starting saturday, that could all change, with oaklands slow streets program. People will be out there, to get some exercise. Reporter the goal of the program is to give families more space or bike or walk around their neighborhood while keeping six feet away from others. 74 miles of neighborhood streets will be offlimits to cars. People who live on those designated streets, seen here in purple, will still be able to get in and out of their homes but they need to slow down. There will be people, children, in streets, and frankly, oaklanders havent driven with the thought that at any moment, a child could pop out between two parked cars and thats how we should drive all the time. Oaklands mayor libby schaaf wants people to continue wearing face masks out in public and once youre done with your run, go back home. Social distancing is the only vaccine we have to fight this deadly virus. Reporter advocacy groups, walk by berkeley is, hoping berkeley city officials will feel inspired by oakland and follow their lead. The east bay times is reporting the judge in the case has denied his release. On wednesday, the judge had indicated she may release him from the jail because of coronavirus concern, 15 inmates have tested positive there, and he is awaiting the retrial of the deadly oakland warehouse fire in 2016, a hung jury in the first trial for 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. In some ways it has gone by quickly and other ways it is painfully slow. We are finishing our fourth week of this lockdown. There is progress. But we are not done. Today, Governor Newsom released new data revealing the virus is spreading at a slower pace, slower than anticipated. But he stressed we could quickly lose that progress if we dont remain vigilant. If we pull back, from that effort, you can see numbers that will change radically, and quickly, and so i want to just caution everybody. The governor is asking for a few more weeks, at least, of patience. Well, nursing facilities continue to be a trouble spot. What can be done now to prevent more deaths and infections . Nbc bay area sonya shin is in san jose with some new plans to keep seniors safe. Reporter as both residents and staff test positive for covid19, medical experts are urging people to not move residents at this time because it could put them at greater risk of becoming infected. California has more than 1200 Skilled Nursing facilities spread throughout the state. Health Officials Say theyre tracking confirmed cases of covid19 in nearly 200 of those facilities. Santa clara county says it has 164 cases in senior homes and seven of those patients have died. Right now, the county is taking very seriously any cases or suspected cases in a congregate setting. Places where people are living beyond a single household. Reporter they say theyre actively investigating and responding to every case. This comes on the same day almeda county announced nine people have now died at just one nursing facility in hayward. Canyon springs in san jose hasnt had a death yet but it announced today that 20 residents have tested positive for covid19. Along with 15 staff members. The county says despite those recent deaths among seniors, theyre seeing evidence that social distancing is helping flatten the curve. That peak is lower than we might have anticipated and that peak is later than we might have anticipated. Which gives us a chance to better prepare our hospitals as well as our Skilled Nursing facilities to meet that demand. Governor newsom says nursing facilities are a top priority for the state now. We will provide a more Technical Assistance and technical support, to make sure that we keep our patients safe. The county of santa clara says theyre doing everything they can to support nursing facilities. And they expect to see more cases at more facilities in the coming days. In san jose, sonja shin, nbc bay area news. A life and death balance, President Trump wants to see parts of america go back to work soon, but medical experts urge caution. In new york, here new hospitalizations are dropping, the governor is calling for a dramatic increase in testing especially antibody tests which shows whether a person has had the virus and may now be immune, and says that is essential before workers return to work. President trump is downplaying the urgency of that testing. At a certain point in the not too distant future, it will begin. What about the widespread testing. Well, people are going to go to the hospital, people arent going to get sick. We need both diagnostic testing and Antibody Testing and we need millions and millions of them. And we need them in a matter of weeks. The president says the u. S. Does more tests than any other nation, but on a per capita basis, the u. S. Lags behind many other countries. It is a common sight, so many people Wearing Masks and gloves, when theyre out in public, but are those gloves doing more harm than good. We know the cdc is recommending everyone wear some kind of face covering, but the cdc hasnt made that same recommendation for gloves. Ucsf Infectious Disease specialist dr. Peter chin hahn says gloves are not a bad idea but you need to be aware of the surfaces you touch when you have them on. Although it is good to protect you, it could spread infections because it is like a surface, so if you dont maintain social distance, or forget that you have the gloves on, for example, im wearing gloves now, and say i touch my iphone, or the surface, and then i accidentally touch my face, or my nose, i can transfer that bug from the iphone into the nose and mouth so i think it can be accidentally spread that way. A false confidence there. Doctors say the best thing to do, back to the basics there, wash your hands and maintain that social distance. We need to track how their infection gets transmitted from persontoperson, at a community level. Dr. Ronjohn nar, an expert in mobile technology, says the rare handshake between the companies could help keep track of the viruss spread, while giving people Vital Information to stay safe. There can be an increase in probability for them to get a test, going to the hospital, because we have a finite amount of tests to hand out to people. And they caution even though the technology might be optional, many might have concerns over privacy. And the government, or the Tech Companies themselves, they have to say very clearly how theyre gog to use this data. Day, governor gavin newsom says california was ready to work with that technology. Already, we have engaged those companies. We were on the phone just this morning specifically with apple on that tracing technology.
