And its only adding to peoples frustrations listen, you completely understand why the president or secretary mnuchin would want people enthusiastic and excited about saying were going to get right back out there and get back to work, but when people are saying, i cant apply for unemployment because the website isnt working or the Small Business loan kristen referred to, thats caused huge strain this week. So one of the reasons the government is now asking for more money to give to Small Businesses is because theres such demand. One of the reasons theres a delay in it, the question, how do we get the money to the most needy people hoda, say you run a small Daycare Center at home. You dont have a sophisticated payroll system but are a Small Business say im a Small Business running a law firm should you and i both get line at the same time to get that loan chances are if im the law firm im going to get that application in, because ive got a tax lawyer and an accountant and can make that happen you run that small Daycare Center youre completely shut down you really need that money right now there hasnt been pry prioritization they have to address this. That will need to happen a region at a time a county at a time there are a number of us thinking about now what needs to be in place so other types of businesses beyond ours can start back to work at walmart we never really shut down keeping the Grocery Supply chain flowing has been our purpose these last few weeks and months. Two workers from walmart in the chicago area passed away from the virus. One of the familys filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company, and the question is whether some of these policies you just outlined came a little too late for example, taking temperatures of employees in the storess that happened six days after one of the chicago employees passed away yeah. Our heart goes out to those families, and the associates in those stores we think that everything were doing, take our lead policy, for example, gives People Freedom not to come to work. We dont want associates coming to work if not feeling well have a temperature. The things weve done with our cash bonus, pulling forward quarterly bonuses give freedom from a financial point of view to make that choice. I think all americans have a new appreciation for the hard work that is being done and how necessary it is and how much we all rely on it walmart is one of those businesses thats actually doing well in this terrible economy, where the dow is down, walmart stock is up. And the executives will see a benefit from that, frankly theyll reap the rewards of that is it time beyond just temporary bonus or temporary paid leave, extensions that kind of thing, is it time to do more for the walmart employee to have a piece of that Financial Success . Yeah. Weve been taking a number of steps, as you may remember, we did a special cash bonus at the beginning of this process to put money in their pockets and pulled quarterly bonus making adjustments to paid time off plan got a three tier process there where associates can choose to not come to work and a number of them have. One of the reasons weve been hiring so many people during this period of time. Since march 19th, in the United States weve hired over 100,000 people to join walmart and help out. Thats real important. A lot of our associates are feeling fatigued from working so hard for so many days and weeks. As we go forward well keep looking for opportunities to support them more, because as i mentioned earlier they really are stepping up. Lets talk about what people are buying obviously, theyve been stockpiling supplies like toilet paper, paper towel, hand sanitizer. A lot of times you go to the stores, its not on the shelves. When do you feel youll be able to meet the demand thats out there consistently i think its important that everyone know that our merchandise continues to flow. Our replenishment team, suppliers, are working hard to make that happen food is recovering and in good shape. Hand sanitizer has been harder to come by our associates have it and were working to put it on the shelf soon as we do, its gone paper goods continuing to sell out quickly. Sold enough toilet paper for every american to have their own roll just in five days so theres plenty of flow coming, but if everyone could manage and buy week to week rather than stocking up at this point it would be helpful for everybody. There was an announcement a few weeks ago at the white house, as you, walmart and other big box retailers would participate in housing mobile testing sites for the virus in your parking lots. As i understand it, there have been a few set up, but not for everybody. Theyre for frontline workers it hasnt really gone, or caught on nationwide yet. Whats the status of that and what to expect yeah. Were making progress. Walmart along with other retailers have been working with the testing lab, state governments and the federal government to try and stand these us weve put up a few and think about 20 sites will be open over 10 states in the next couple of weeks. Ppe the original limitation. Thats starting to improve were hoping to get those open and operating quickly in the places where needed most the government also asked for more assistance from us and from others for disposable surgical gowns. Weve worked to source that and provide it through our supply chain and partnership with mckesson and through april we think we found an additional million gowns we will be able to get to hospitals and through the month of may, millions more to help out on the front line. Today a somber day, sunday, a celebration for christians around the world are people having in ways a renewed appreciation for faith i do, and i think that, this is the day that changed all of history. It was a day about love and life amid pain and death. And we are all living that in a particularly visceral way, as we all suffer together from either the reality or the fear, the wellfounded fear of this virus. The message of jesus was captured in the sermon on the mount. It was about doing unto the least of these it was about reaching outside and not being closed in, and the irony of where we are today is that we have to reach out virtually, but we can still do that, and i think find a way to follow the great commandment that came out of last night in the christian tradition, which was which jesus washed the feet of the disciples he said, the commandment i leave with you is love one another as i have loved you. Hmm indeed in fact, i was thinking just this morning that in a way no matter what your spiritual practices are, were all practicing that ageold wisdom of loving your neighbor by staying home and trying to keep others safe. Right. This is a time, though, jon, of such great uncertainty and frankly great suffering for many, many people. Especially economically right now. And sometimes i think that feels like it threatens your faith but on the other hand it can be the time you find your faith and need it more than ever. Well, faith was born out of struggle israel, the word israel, means one who struggles. It was the drama of passover the drama of the passion the drama of the early church. Its all about trying to find an understanding of the world that gives you a sense of hope and dislocation, and it may get something to live for. And this is a time of enormous dislocation, and it may get worse before it gets better, but history tells us that faith should be an aid, a help, in what the psalmist called in the great time of trouble. And today is the day to think about this jesus went to the cross, because it was ordained by mysterious purposes that we, to the redemption of the world, it was going to be about the sacrifice of a son we dont know why that was but we know he did it, and we know that when he cried out, my god, my god, why haft thou forsaken me from psalm 22 everybody should go and read that psalm today it starts with pain, with the anguish. That were in right now. That psalm ends with the poor shall be satisfied and shall eat and ends you with this vision of order. What we have to pray for is that thats how we will come out of this. Yeah. I always think the psalms are good good reading to express whatever youre feeling its a good reminder to do that. You know, the other thing i was thinking about is praying. We just heard that, you know, many, many more people are praying, but you can sometimes be overwhelmed and frankly you dont even know what to pray for or where to even begin, and i listened to a sermon once the pastor said just pray as you can. Pray any old way you can what are your thoughts about prayer right now yeah. I you know, im a sacramental guy, im episcopalian. Only six of us left so we know each other the thing that we have that our tradition has, is, besides gin and tonic, is the book of common prayer and what i would urge folks to do is just google daily office.
