Have been infected already, and to see if that makes them protected enough to work closely with coronavirus patients. Well before Stanford Health care workers were tested themselves, stanford was testing thousands of volunteers including at this los gatos park, not only for the antibody study, but to see how prevalent the disease is in the community. Stanford says testing of Health Care Workers is to find out who might have been infected already, and now might be carrying antibodies that could protect them from getting reinfected. By skype, h. Wesley clark, Public Health professor at santa clara university, called Antibody Research such as at stanford and ucsf a game changer. Ultimately, you cant infect anybody else. And it is a new frontier were dealing with. A new virus were dealing with. So when you have the academy doing and Public Health authorities doing, is trying to capture information about that frontier, so we can help the public. Renowned public disease specialist dr. Peter chen wong of ucsf agrees and says antibody information from ucsf, stanford and private research will help in predicting situations rather than just reacting. So far, we dont have good prediction models about who gets really sick, when everyone is kind of in the beginning, so maybe those who have antibodies early may help protect them from getting sick later on. They may be of prognostic value. It is too early to tell if exposure to coronavirus provides immunity with antibody, and if so how much, and with testing at such a large scale, any information gathered will be useful. Robert handa, nbc bay area news. Governor newsom releases the new batch of numbers, and it shows were not close to being done with the spike. The total number of reported cases in the state of california here is nearly 17,000 people. About 2700 people have been hospitalized. Thats the blue graph right there. Of those hospitalizations, 1,154 people are in intensive care. 442 people have died. 68 of those 442 people have died within the last 24 hours. Raj, the governor also laid out how he plans to buy millions of masks a month for Health Care Workers on the front lines. Were very pleased that were able to formally submit to the legislature yesterday a request to utilize money from our Disaster Response Emergency Operations account. The state has also signed several accounts of various nonprofits and a californiabased manufacturer. Many of the incoming supplies will be distributed to hot spot areas first, like the bay area. Well, sadly, price gouging isnt going away. People have been reporting masks, gloves, and other essential items being sold at hugelyinflated prices across the bay area. Whats being done about it . Investigators are cracking down. Here is nbc bay area jodi hernandez. We need people to be doing the right thing out there, and just, you know, really trying to solve this problem together. Reporter thats what clark hatchet was trying to do when he decided to buy gloves to donate to medical workers. He was shocked to learn his berkeley Hardware Store was selling them for nearly 30 a box. More than two times what he expected to pay. When you have people taking advantage of it for profit, its just, its not right. Reporter hatchet reported it to the almeda county d. A. s office, who got back to him within the hour. The d. A. s office says theyve gotten dozens of complaints on their special hotline and theyre investigating every one. The last thing anybody needs is to have to pay exorbitant prices for items that are essential to keep us safe. Reporter we found a corner store in richmond selling masks for 87 for a box of ten. They lowered their price to 5. 99 a mask, when they learned we were the media, claiming they paid 5 a mask themselves. We need our residents to be eyes and ears. Reporter Contra Costa County is cracking down, too. Theyre sending out warning letters to businesses they get complaints on but they say anyone charging more than 10 over the nonemergency price could face serious fines. Each violation is a separate 2500 fine. So if someone sold 100 rolls of toilet paper, at an exorbitant price that could be up to 250,000 of a fine they could face. Reporter the state has sending d. O. J. Agents out to serve search warrants on suspected price gougers this week. Jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. We hear the word virus so many times now, on a daily basis, but how does it actually attack your body . Our own Jessica Aguirre is working from home this week and has some information that is really interesting. Break it down for us, jessica. Reporter janelle, before january, and before we heard the word covid19, it became part of our every day language, you might get sick, and you go to the doctor, and you would ask for some antibiotics, and they say oh, no, you have a virus, that will go away on its own but now the word virus sounds so scary when you say it. So we wanted to know exactly what is a virus, how does it attack your body, what happens to you . I talked to a bio physicist doing postdoctorate work at yale, his name is brian lynn harris, and he told me to think of a virus, at least this virus, as a home invader, that gets into your house, a burglar, and then takes over, and rearranges all the furniture. You can compare ourselves to a house, and in houses, we have different rooms, and if you want to carry out a function in your house, you would go to the store, and you would buy a piece of furniture, and that piece of furniture that you would have, it would have instructions with it, to assemble that piece of furniture. Those instructions are genetic material or dna in all of our cells and if i was going to be a virus for this example, i would have a key to, use a key to get access to the house and open the lock and i would have my own set of instructions that ive snuck in, and that provides its own dna or rna, that allows it to replicate itself. So you can imagine, i could reassemble, they say a bookcase or a piece of furniture and doing that time and time again and at a certain point i will start taking pieces of wood from the walls of the house, and the house just crumbles. Now, he told me the coronavirus proteins have been the ones that are invading your lungs and damaging the lower respiratory part of the lungs and thats why people end up on ventilator. Coming up at 6 00, he explained why simple soap is such a combatant against that home invasion, and that burglar that gets into your home. Very good explanation, thank you, jessica. President trump spent part of his day criticizing Bernie Sanders from dropping out of the president ial race. And he criticized joe biden for not getting an endorsement from president obama. He also continued his attack on the World Health Organization after threatening to stop hundreds of millions of dollars in funding. And everything seems to be chinas way. Thats not right. Its not fair to us and honestly its not fair to the world. Okay, question in the back. Yes. The director general of the w. H. O. Who are pleaded that without unity, there would be more body bags. A rally on wall street now, the dow soaring nearly 800 points. A lot of green on that chart there, the s p and the nasdaq, also up. Wall street, good. San francisco, the east bay and San Mateo County combined are expected to lose 520,000 jobs lost. Not the best time to buy and sell a home, a lot of anxiety and uncertainty, and usually as you probably know, springtime is a boon time for real estate sales. Not anymore though. An economist with Real Estate Company zillow says bay area sales are down about 35 from this time last year. He says despite lower Interest Rates, sales hit the skids around march 16th. Theres so much to be uncertain about. Theres a question of, you know, what are Interest Rates going to do, whats the stock market going to do. And concern over social distancing, Real Estate Agents are resorting to virtual sales and plenty of sales are still taking place. Still to come, Bernie Sanders explains why now is the best time to end the president ial bid. Dont come here, the popular vacation spot sending out a stern warning to people specifically in the bay area. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri, the chance of rain returning tomorrow. We are reconnecting with our families and friends, and going out of our way to help strangers. A lot of people doing something good during this pan demmic. We want to highlight some of them right now. Jessica rejoins us from her home and an east bay teacher is doing a lot of something good. Boy is he. Teachers all across the bay area, are really doing all that Distance Learning with their students and it is tough going, trying to get used to the whole system, and one teacher in the up a notch. Michael dambrosio has been online with students, a Video Production teacher at dublin high and also a coach, and he said he had an epiphany while working with his students, he really wanted to do something to show the community that we all care for them, especially the front line worker, and he said while chatting with his students, he got inspired. One thing that i have noticed as a teacher is they really miss social interaction and what i have done is when my class sections are over, i will normally leave my group up, leave my meeting up and give them the opportunity to talk to each other, because they just miss being kid, being out there. I bet. So you go off, on your Distance Learning, and you are doing this from home, with the students, and then you decide, im really not doing enough. Tell me a little bit about how you decided that you needed to get more involved and do stuff for your neighbors. I decided to create a Facebook Page called try Valley Community health during shelter in place and it has taken off in over three weeks, we have more than 1600 members and 150 volunteers, and they are ready to work at a drop of a hat. And they have been working. Making masks. Delivering groceries. They have been going out raising money. Buying gift cards. And taking those gift cards to the local hospitals here. So that they are given out, so that the nurses and the doctors can have some nice meal, it helps the restaurants at the same time, theyve raised over 5,000 and painting rock, and then putting them in the pathway where the nurses and the doctors come out, so they can see how appreciated they are. Coming up at 6 00, michael tells me about the lesson he want, not only his students but all the students in the bay area, to take away from this coronavirus crisis. Thank you very much, jessica. See you later. Lake tahoe has a message for bay area folks looking to visit during this pandemic. Please dont visit. A trip to the snow or cabin is a good escape, the risk you present outweighs any reward and the county has more than 115 cases of covid19 and so as the numbers grow, so does the worry of having enough room to treat the critically ill. Even if they have a second home in the tahoe area, were asking them to stay in the primary residence, and the reason for that is we have a small Health Care System in lake tahoe that was designed for the permanent population. They say if someone were to get sick in north lake tahoe, one hospital in truckee, and it only has 25 beds. So i can still hold that Easter Egg Hunt in my backyard. Is that right, jeff . It looks really, really good for the Easter Egg Hunts on sunday. With all of the covid19 stuff going on, you got to make sure to add that to the sevenday forecast, for all of the kids out there, who are wondering, again, great weather on sunday, and we will get to that here in just a little bit, but i did want to start off tonight, with something that might have started to bug you again today, and that is your allergies. So what i want you to do is head to my twitter page, i have a list, where you can compare the symptoms between covid19, allergies, and also regular cold, and then you can kind of figure out where you are on that. And the good news as we head through tomorrow, a little bit of a rain chance, to help to wash away some of that pollen. And its from a storm system thats well off to the south, and that will help to push up some rain chances right here towards the bay area. And now, were not looking at a big storm, but by 7 30 in the morning, you can see some hit and miss showers, at a return back to the bay area. And as we head through the afternoon, it is not much, but we could have a few more of the hit and miss showers down here for the south bay. Santa cruz mountains and notice how the cloud cover hangs on for most of the bay area. I think max totals with this storm system, are definitely going down here towards southern california, and los angeles, averaging about a half inch, and up towards the bay area, max totals for the south bay, around 0. 2. And as you can see more to the north, those totals drop off down to santa rosa only. 01 of an inch. High pressure, it begins to warm us up with 70s on the way.
