We drop down to freezing right now in santa rosa and were in the upper 30s in napa and now have the rain further to the south and were getting a chilly rain with the temperatures right now in the low to mid40s. Just a headsup about that that you are able to get inside in case some of the heavy rain does move through. And then well see our activity winding down going into tomorrow. However the state has tested 126,000 people. Thats less than one half of one percent of our states population. Reporting live in the east bay, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you for the very latest there, bob. We all face several more weeks of this shelter at home order. A new normal for families, emerge from this but in the meantime families are at home and have to get through it so we invite this had morning a behavioral and developmental pediatrician to talk more about how families can adapt and cope. I want to know youre the author of a book called raising an organized child and that sums up we have to be scheduled and organized when it comes to dealing with our kids, too, right . Exactly. We need to keep calm ourselves. Number two we give some control to our children and, number three maintain some sort of normalcy and that means having regular routines, having the same limits you would normally have on bed times and getting up in the morning and having meals and making sure you do some cognitive academic work, get exercise, keeping things as normal as we can. What do you mean when you say give some control to your kids . The way we give control, listen, this is a germ that hops from people to people and the way we can defeat the germ is we dont let it hop from people to people. We stay apart, we stay away from each other. We wash our hands and we sanitize. If we do those things were going to defeat this germ. What do you think about in regards to our future . I mean, this point in time where you dont want your kids to become germophobes but how could this change them for later down the road . Were all learning the value of hand washing and if we can get kids in preschool to wash their hands more well be safer. All right, and you had a good point we talked to you last hour as well. Talk about you have a lot of graduations that kids are missing. I mean, celebrations that would be happening this time of year. Youve seen families trying to hold pseudo birthday parties for their kids online. How do you tell your kids how to deal with that kind of change . These are big momentous moments in some of their lives. I think this is difficult in all children and we should watch for signs of stress and anxiety with our kids whether theyre becoming more clingy or theyre crying more, more irritable. But i think its especially hard for teenagers. Because teenagers are missing what feels like to them end of the world type opportunities. Im not spending time with my boyfriend or girlfriend. Missing out on a graduation or prom. What they need to do is just listen and to hear it, not try to solve the problem but acknowledge what theyre going through. Yeah, everybody wants to be heard. Well, doctor, we appreciate you taking the time to join us. We know youre a father of five. He has a busy household. I have a busy household. Yes, we do. Good health to you. Thanks again. Thank you. Be safe. All right, you, too. Be safe, stay in. Thats the word we continue and actually it was easy over the weekend, kari, with all the rain that we have. Yeah, that rain was off and on just when the sun started to peek out and then another wave of rain came in. Were going to see the same thing as the storm system remains over the region. Ive seen the showers still off the coast and a couple disturbances that are lingering nearby and theyll move in today and bring us the potential of even some thunderstorms along with some small hail. Were going to see some snow on our bay area peaks including the Santa Cruz Mountains as well as mt. Diablo and mt. Hamilton later on today. As we take it hour by hour we could start to see some thunderstorms popping especially south of San Francisco to the south bay and the east bay so well start to see it clearing out, rain chances going down but still a slight chance tomorrow. Ill have more on that in a few minutes and, mike, youve been doing something new called the new normal. Weve been hash tagging it on social media. So what is it . Kari, thank you. Youre going to share in a second. Folks sharing whats going on in our house. I want to show you a picture of my home studio. People ask how i broadcast from home. My wife has donated to me the desk she no longer gets to use. Shes made a number of other sacrifices and so has my motherinlaw who is adjacent to this room. She can hear the vibrations of my voice. The family adjusting. Kari, in your house, the family has made more sacrifices than that. Im taking up the whole living room here so they cant watch the tv in this area because i put up my green screen along with lights and a baby gate up to keep the little ones away from my studio and keep from knocking everything over. Laura, i know you were very creative this weekend. What did you make . Thats right. I have triplets as most folks know and i had to keep them busy. But what better craft than what everybody else is making, masks. They had fun. We quickly put together a little video. They loved that part of it, too. And then everyone was wearing their colorful masks. In the meantime, marcus, youve been Holding Things down at the fort at home. Youre going to water the plant on my desk for me. I am. I have things to do around here with you all not here. I hope you havent forgotten this place, our studio, alone. I thought about that song you and i alone its okay. Its for a good reason. I cant wait until were all back together again. Exactly. Marcus, i saw i was watching you. You are not alone. Big brother is always watching. Folks, we would love to see your new normal. Were talking fun activities, activities in general, changes to what you used to do and share that with me. The treasurer announcing them push the property tax deadline from this friday to may 4th. This is the First Business day after the citys shelter in place order is lifted. The statewide deadline to pay property taxes is still this try day but some counties including San Francisco are now allowing taxpayers to file for a waiver. 6 48 this morning and weve been reporting this year on today in the bay the Coronavirus Relief bill is expected to provide direct payments to millions of americans amid the pandemic. There are added benefits for anyone with retirement savings. The senior director of Retirement Solutions is here to discuss how the bill relates to your 401 k . So thank you so much for joining us this morning, ted. Absolutely. Thank you very much for having me. Lets get right to that 401 k . A lot of people worried about this because no matter how old you are your 401 k has probably been hit hard by whats going on with the stock market. Talk to us about how this bill helps and who it actually helps in this situation. Yeah, two questions weve been getting, number one, the volatility and what that means for a 401 k and under the c. A. R. E. S. Act theres expanded opportunities to take distributions or plan loans from your 401 k . So what about someone who is gearing up to retire, say they were hoping maybe later this year and they were planning to use that 401 k money to really support them as they retire, should they reevaluate that at this point . Well, when your time horizon is really that short youre probably all set to retire anyway. My guess is that somebody in that situation likely is going to have a pretty diversified portfolio and at this point they could probably just ride this out, stick with their Asset Allocation and i would take a wait and see approach in that situation. Ive seen a lot of people and heard people talk about investments like this is the best time to get in and invest if you can if you have that extra money to do it. Is that something you suggest . It really depends on your investment horizon. Qualified retirement plans are not a vehicle for shortterm investing. Really youre looking at the long term. This is something that might be used years or maybe even decades in the future, so if youre a worker in your 20s and 30s and you have a stable job so its not like youve been furloughed or laid off and had one of those horrible events happen, it is actually a good time to keep with that dollar cost average. Keep investing in the down market. Those dollars are likely the ones most impactful for your career. I would tell somebody in that situation keep with the course, keep investing, keep plugging that money in to your qualified plan. I think for a lot of people its scary to understand whats going on when theyre losing money with their 401 k . What words of advice would you give to people out there who are just nervous about everything, maybe some words to relieve them a little bit. I know thats hard but do you have anything you would say to one of your clients . I think in general the worst decisions we make are the ones the most emotional and the most time pressure. With your qualifying plan, take a step back. Divorce yourself from all the noise thats going on. Take a look at your time horizon. Look at your Asset Allocation and in many instances the best course of action is to do nothing and to stick with what youve got. Now, again, thats aside from if you were laid off or if youre furloughed and need to use a distributions or loans, but i would say stay the course. If you have a trusted adviser, talk with that person but, again, this is a longterm game and we dont know what the market will be decades in the future. The best is to do nothing and stick with your investments, keim keep on plugging in. Thank you for joining us with that advice. Hopefully we leaving a lot of people some anxiety right now. Thanks for having me. 5 52 for you this morning and lets take a look at that forecast for you. Beautiful sunrise behind you, kari. Yeah. Thats the reason i popped it up. Its coming over the horizon and coming through those clouds with all those beautiful colors. Weve seen things like this and we do still have some rain chances for the south bay as we head over to ever of green. We measured pretty decent rain over the weekend. We have temperatures starting out very chilly in the 40s and with the rain nearby well see some snow on some of our bay area peeks. Expect the off and on showers as we stay on the cool side only reaching into the 50s. And looking at the rain right now across the south bay, the peninsula, well see the rain chances today. Make sure you have that umbrella because even know its not raining now where you are, its most likely going to be coming through in San Francisco and areas to the south and east. We could see some thunderstorms popping up today so theres the possibility that we may see some small hail along with thunder and lightning and heavy rain that could linger into this evening and then moving out looks much better for tomorrow but still some spotty showers still possible into early wednesday as well.
