I will give you a little surprising note that chp tweeted out for all of us, and again, that might be a surprise for some. Thats coming up. This morning the number of coronavirus cases is increasing in the bay area. There are now more than 2,600, and 68 people have died, and the hot zone is Santa Clara County just shy of 1,000 cases. Nationally there are now over 216,000 cases, and over 5,000 deaths. New york accounts for over 1,300 of the deaths, and nearly 9,000 people have recovered so far. And running out, the stockpile of masks, gowns, and other protective gear nearly depleted, and tracie potts is live with that, plus the fight brewing on capitol hill. Yeah, that fight is about spending more money to support the economy, and interesting nancy pelosi and the president on the same side of this one, but we begin today with the critical hunt for supplies for healthcare workers all over the country that just cant find it. Nurses protesting in san jose, and healthcare workers across the country in fear. I worry about taking this home to my family. Theres not enough protective equipment to go around as they fight the coronavirus. Tell the governors, get it yourself if you can, from your local companies and local warehouses. President trump says the federal government and states are in a bidding war as manufacturers jack up prices. The National Stockpile is now nearly depleted. The only weapon we have the is social distancing, and we have seen evidence that social distancing can work. Floridas governor took heat for not pushing social distancing to clear crowded beaches. Now he has issued a stayathome order after out pacing 45 states with the most cases. The uss Teddy Roosevelt has sailors with the coronavirus. There has been around 5,000 people in the United States who have died as a result of the coronavirus, and the estimate is slightly above or slightly below 5,000, but the bottom line the top Infectious Disease expert, dr. Fauci,t. The city of San Francisco is doing more to help flatten the curve. Its next move is to help further distance the hundreds of homeless living out on the streets. This is not bringing in people off the streets, but its from People Living in shelters. Currently city shelters are only able to accommodate three feet between each cot, and this will give them the added space to give six feet between people while sleeping, and meanwhile Santa Clara County opened fair grounds to the homeless populati congested situations, both off the streets and into shelters and into wide open spaces and decrease the risk of spreading the coronavirus. The city has leased hotels, and they are trying to get two more large building leases like this one in place to get more Homeless People in the shelters and spread out. Applicants are suddenly dealing with dramatically different situations out there, and in some cases the tests themselves have been completely canceled. Supporters are now asking to cancel rent to those suddenly out of work from the stayathome order. Temperature wise today, i know a lot of people are trying to get out and get fresh air, and we are starting out in concord with chilly temperatures, and as we go throughout the day low 60s in the forecast. I am not commuting to work, but folks have been telling me even though the roadways are clear, they are having people tailgate and weave through traffic. You recall President Trump was very grim about the virus, and this would be on tuesday, so that turned wednesdays markets rough and stocks sank, but the dow is expected to gain more than 300 points on the open. The City Department of health tweeted this picture out thanking tesla for its donation of ventilators. Closer examination of the boxes shows they are not the ventilators doctors call invotive. Musk has called the coronavirus silly, but he has since started to take the disease more seriously. Its not that the machines are not helpful, they will be useful, but its not the ventilators we in the media or the president or dr. More people are sheltering in place and trying to social distance and everything like that, and then looking at the south, the temperatures reach into the low 70s today. We are looking at very warm weather in a big chunk of the country. We are tracking another storm system coming in for the weekend and that will bring in cooler temperatures and rain. We could see rainfall potential reaching over half inch for much of the bay area, asperpespecial we go into monday and tuesday before the storm system moves out. For the sierra snow pack, we see some progress, and its about half of the normal amount we normally see at this time so we still have some work to do. The good news is we still have snow in the forecast. Were looking at the possibility of one to three feet over the next several days, so a good amount of snow with one storm and a decent amount of rain with the bay area. We will see our temperatures in the upper 60s for today and then by the time that rain moves out for the weekend, we are going to see mid50s for the inland areas, and for San Francisco, expect a high of 56 degrees on saturday as that rain returns. I will have more on that. Mike, you are tracking the morning commute, and so far it looks light. Yeah, on the freeways things are moving smoothly. A lighter volume so people can go some speeds, and chp are seeing people going too fast, over 100 miles per hour, so be careful. Watch for the posted limit wherever you go, folks. No major issues for the freeways, and in the north bay we are looking at a smooth drive, but in napa theres a deadly crash near linda vista, so be careful. A car went off the roadway overnight. I will let you know if theres any other news we can bring to you, and the loss of anybodys life, of course, is a concern. San rafael, this is the reason why we are able to maintain the speed limit around the bay. Coming up, we have a concern about one of the transit lines and well talk about why coming up. There was just a Big Development in the weeklong fight to allow them to disembark. We continue to follow break ing news out of florida where two cruise ships have nowhere to dock with sick passengers onboard. Now they are headed to ft. Lauderdale. More than 200 passengers now have possible symptoms and four passengers have died. A deal is basically done to allow those passengers to finally disembark. Floridas governor allowed the ships to dock, but local authorities were not even giving the green light. A separate story playing out in san diego. International passengers stuck on a Carnival Cruise ship, many from south america. One spoke by phone. The passengers have nowhere to go once they get off the ship because their home countries have closed their boarders. Florida is the newest state to issue a statewide stayathome order. 45 states are under some restrictions, and the governor made that decision yesterday to curve infections, and that order is expected to last at least 30 days. And then the coronavirus pandemic is taking a toll on countries across the world, and globally we are approaching 1 million cases, and 48,000 deaths. The u. S. Is leading the world with the most cases, however italy has the most deaths with nearly 10,000. The director of the World Health Organizations predicts within the next few days there will be 1 million confirmed cases worldwide and 50,000 deaths globally. The director said he was deeply concerned about the rapid escalation of the coronavirus, and Vice President pence said our trajectory if you look at the curves of the acceleration of cases, hospitalizations and deaths, its superimposed corrected for population. Its a really serious issue. Italy got hit hard and its clear that we are getting hit very hard right now, and the epy center of it in the United States is new york city, but as you see its not going to be confined to new york city, we will see this kind of thing in other large situations, and its a difficult situation as predicted. It will be worse before better for sure. Nationwide, a 30day stayathome order, even though not all states are calling for that. They are wanting to put in place welfare measures, where poor people are battling the stop of the spread of the virus. Because of all the numbers we do have big changes to get used to now from the stricter bay area shelter at home orders in place, to the idea if we should all be wearing masks. Mayor is suggesting everybody that lives down there goes out with a mask on, and hes talking about nonmedical grade masks, and save those n 95 ones for healthcare workers, and even a scarf will help, because the idea is to keep a person that does not have symptoms but is infected from spreading it through droplets, and perhaps most importantly its to keep us from touching our faces, and its such a hard habit to break. Nose, eyes and mouth is how the virus gets into your body. And gavin newsom said the masks might help prevent the spread of the social distancing, but not more than what we are doing right now, the social distancing. Humanitarian aid organizations from around the world are sending masks to hot spots, including los angeles more than 80,000 masks are expected to arrive by next week. General motors is making protective masks for healthcare workers. Gm expect to deliver its first 20,000 masks to hospital workers by next week. Bay Area Health Care workers are organizing two more rallies today. Both are calling for more protections when it comes to dealing with coronavirus patients. This follows several other bay area protests, including one at the Good Samaritan hospital. The state recently leased a hospital facing closure, and the gear is not in place for an expected surge. We are a decimated space provider and if we cant get our ppes, its hard for us to take care the white house insists supplies are being districted but adding to the concern the Washington Post reports the National Stockpile is nearly maxed out. Starting tomorrow morning the dmv will start to offer some of the services online. It says some drivers license will be renewed through its website, and will process title transfers and complex vehicle registrations to be completed online. Some say they are running into glitches. The dmv closed its doors to the public indefinitely last friday. To the dismay of a lot of teenagers, turning 16 and they probably wanted to get those licenses. We are ordering things online, and make sure you put up a large sign for delivery so they know where they can leave the things, and you can leave the packages outside and they are recommending you leave them out there for about 24 hours. I do, and part of the commute is the transit, and ac transit, one of the drivers tested positive for covid19, coronavirus, and we believe thats the first diagnosis for the ac Transit Group and their personnel. They already have a modified sunday schedule, and they dont think that conflicted with those who were actually there. We will keep checking with ac transit. Again, one of their drivers has been diagnosed with covid19. And the rest of the changes hold for the rest of the agencies. No major problems on the roadways, and theres no speed issues. 5 41. New overnight, firefighters in the south bay battling a fire that is believed to have started in an rv that spread to two homes. This is video just into our news room. The fire broke out just before midnight on north 7th street just blocks away from san jose state university. At one point firefighters had to subdue a man and strap him to a gurney. Firefighters say there might have been a language barrier. Firefighters say 15 people wont be able to return home this morning. We still dont know the cause. New video of a bizarre story in southern california. Thats where police say a coronavirus conspiracy theorists was also a train engineer and purposely derailed his train just yards from the Navy Hospital ship now assisting in the coronavirus pandemic. That train plowed full speed through fences and a parking lot before stopping. He believed that ship was docked at the port of los angeles for some sort of alternative purpose. Nobody was injured. Not a lot of news to report, but there was a moment with dr. Fauci i wanted to call to your attention, and its a bit long but its important. A reporter asked when we might be free from the coronavirus. Were in mitigation right now, and thats what the social and physical distancing is. The ultimate solution to a virus that might keep coming back would be a vaccine. In fact, i was on the Weekly Conference call with the w. H. O. Group, and we all came to the agreement that we may have cycling with another season, and we would be much better prepared and would likely have interventions, but the ultimate game changer will be a vaccine, the same way other vaccines that were discouraged in the past, now that we dont even worry about. I played that because it was just a moment that struck me. I think a lot of people, my neighbors and myself think we are in our houses so we can avoid the virus and not go h hospital, and medical professionals say we are in our houses so we dont go to the hospital at the same time, and wh when we relax this, the virus will still be out there and you will be vulnerable, and its only when theres a vaccine when we are all truly going to be safe. We are watching everything happening in washington. And then the testing site in hayward is running efficiently. It was inundated with people in the days after it open, and about 10 or 130 people have tested positive. It was really overwhelmed in the first few days. In fact you had to cut back on it. How is it all going now . Its going very well. We have to give 100 tests a day, and we have a 10 positive rate. After the first day we didnt require people to have a fever, but we were still looking for people that were at higher risk. Thats going well. Maybe a few glitches because of traffic in the neighborhood, and we may be looking for a different place to move it to accommodate cars better, and i think were up and running and its helping a lot of people in the community to, you know, have that comfort of being tested. Completely. I mean, really how is it for residents themselves . Everybody is sheltering at home right now, but for some residents, what can you tell them about so many people that potentially have covid19, coming through their neighborhoods, and the testing is also so important . Well, the people are kept isolated, they stay in their cars, and i know there are some concerns in the neighborhood, but i dont think anything we are doing will harm anybody, and even walking nearby, theres a nearby park that, you know, people may be walking through, but as long as people are not right there with the people coming through i think it appears that that would not be any danger to the people in the neighborhood. Nevertheless, as i said, we are looking now to maybe move this to you have another location possibly to add on to or completely move this one . To move it away from it really was put there in connection with a clinic, and the fire chief, and we opened up a firehouse clinic a couple years ago, and [ inaudible ] our firehouse, they are the First Responders, and those are the people that are not having regular medical care, so we have been able to hook a lot of people up with the medical clinic. We thought it needed to be there, the testing, because of the supervision there. We will see the temperatures starting out cool, but warming up today with highs in the mid60s for the south bay and further to the north, we are looking at low to mid60s for this afternoon. The 7day forecast is at the bottom of the screen, but we will look at rain heading in over the next couple of days. This will arrive on saturday starting out early in the morning, and we are seeing it continuing from sunday into monday as well, so we have a lot of wet weather coming in along with cooler temperatures. Rainfall totals at this point looks like it could reach half an inch for most of us and even higher for areas further to the north, so we may get over an inch of rain, muchneeded rain at this point because we are in a moderate drought and we are going to continue to see that rain into the start of next week. Our 7day forecast shows upper 60s for today and tomorrow, and then that rain comes in and drops the highs inland down to the upper 50s and then warms up as we dry out once again.
