Tape around the entire playground so no one can go on it. Theyre also adding new recreational areas like basketball courts and dog parks. It might already feel like weve been ordered to stay at home for months, but its only been two weeks. And Bay Area Health officers say its not enough, extending the order until at least may 3rd. The new rules are more strict. Sports that use a ball like soccer or baseball can only be played with members of your household. Basketball courts will close. Trying to get a little bit of exercise and get a little bit out of the house. Reporter manuel was playing with gloves as a precaution and wanted to put up a few more shots while he still can. People are dying, so i can see why theyre trying to do whatever it takes to prevent that. And as much as we hate it, i guess its probably the right thing to do. Reporter other recreational areas like tables and barbecues, even dog parks that people share are also shutting down at midnight. Its more safer for my dog to be in dog parks instead of running out into the street. Reporter most residential and commercial construction is prohibited, and social distancing is now mandatory everywhere. Santa clara countys Health Officer says this is not the time to relax restrictions. We all must continue to do our part to slow the spread of disease, to ensure that our essential Services Remain open, most especially our hospitals and health care facilities. Reporter you can still go for walks in some large open space areas like the quicksilver park for now. But the county has said if people dont follow the rules, all parks may close. You can still go walking, hiking, cycling, running without limitation as long as you practice social distancing and most likely in your own neighborhood because many parks and trails might be shutting down. You can attend a funeral as long as there are no more than ten people there. You can move homes if it was already in the works and you can still get a plumber, electrician and exterminator. Home based scare for seniors, children and pets is also allowed under this hour. Californias superintendent of schools says brace for it. Students likely are not be back on campus for the remainder of the year. Thur mon says the state is doing its best to support School Districts with virtual classrooms. State educators are working to make sure students have access to devices for internet learning. Theyre coming up with a plan for seniors to make sure they meet all their graduation requirements. One east bay teacher says she is still worried about her students. It really concerns me about the loss of contact the students are having with their teachers. A lot of these students really depend on that daily consistent figure in the classroom and on the campus. Its part of their world. Marilou armor, a 20 year veteran of the department passed away today leaving behind a husband and stepdaughter. Nbc bay areas Terry Mcsweeney is live at the Santa Rosa Police department. Terry, this is a stark reminder of the risks our First Responders face each day. Reporter it is, and Santa Rosa Police department, of course, stunned at the loss of detective armor. You can see outside the Police Department here, youve got some flowers and balloons in tribute to her. It really focuses on the question of how First Responders can do their job without getting sick. They brought flowers and balloons for detective armor, a tribute to the woman who served her community for two decades, most recently on the Domestic Violence Sexual Assault team. Calistoga Police Officer luis pant agura knew the detective. It brings it closer. Were out there, patrolling the streets making sure everybody is safe. Reporter Santa Rosa Police issuing a written statement saying, sadly detective armer was one of our Department Employee whos previously tested positive for covid19 and today succumbed to complications from the illness. Our hearts are with the family and detective armer will be deeply misses. 107 members of the santa rosa p. D. , armer was one of seven who tested positive. Eight results are still pending. They work closely together. They have events together, trainings, these sort of things. So there had been a lot of exposure amongst people even after they were ill. Tonight the total number of cases now approaching 2,400. 890 of those are in Santa Clara County. 63 people in the bay area have died from covid19. New numbers tonight show just how quickly the virus has spread across the nation. Take a look at this graph. On march 1st, we had just 89 cases. By the last day of the month, we now have more than 186,000. Take a look at how much the death toll has climbed this month. Tonight more than 3,800 deaths. Nearly 1,000 more lives lost compared to 9 11. The White House Task force predicts the death toll could grow between 100,000 and 240,000. Its absolutely critical for the American People to follow the guidelines for the next 30 days. Its a matter of life and death frankly. The nations Top Health Officials say without strict social distancing, as many as 2 million americans could die. The spotlight in the fight against the virus landed on california today. The white house held up our state as a shining example for the rest of the country. They brought together their communities and their health providers, and they put in strong mitigation methods and testing. And you can see what the result in Washington State and california is. So if we all wear a mask, we all keep our germs to ourselves. Tonight federal officials are saying they want to make sure medical workers have the supplies they need before they encourage us to get them. Some people are Wearing Masks in public, and some are not. Until now, public Health Officials have said its not necessary for people to cover their nose and mouth unless they are sick. But thats changing. When we get in a situation where we have enough masks, i believe there will be some very serious consideration about more broadening this recommendation of using masks. Reporter dr. Anthony fauci says it may be time to encourage people to cover up. But he wants to make sure Health Care Workers have the supplies they need first. This bay area doctor agrees. It might be worth wearing something thats covering your nose and mouth area for the short term until theres enough masks for everyone. So a mask might make more sense now than it did three weeks ago. Reporter if you dont have a mask, she recommends covering up with a scarf when heading to the grocery store, where its hard to stay six feet away from other people. In San Francisco, people say any will wear them if they can get them. I think it makes sense. I mean anything that we can do to kind of make sure people are just even a little bit safer.
