Numbers show the curve is flattening. We want to show you another graph here. It shows the hospitalization rate in california. There are close to 7,000 cases in california. Of those, 1,600 are in the hospital and 600 others are in icu. The White House Corona Task force presented a grim picture today of where the u. S. Could be headed over the next couple of months. Good news for california though. This is a slide that gives us great hope and understanding about what is possible. On the bottom of the slide where you can barely see that blue line at the very bottom, thats the current cases in california, the cumulative cases in california, where theyre doing significant testing. They brought together their communities and their Health Providers and they put in strong mitigation methods and testing. And you can see what the results in Washington State and california is. While that graph shows that our social distancing has been working, its important to note that we cannot let up now. The state is still in a critical phase where the virus could continue to spread rapidly. California wants to make sure that the states most vulnerable population is taken care of during the crisis. Governor newsom announced a hotline to help people over the age of 65. The goal is to help ease some of the loneliness and anxiety that seniors are feeling while being alone. Newsom said it was fitting to open the service today. Upon us to check in on the greatest generation, people who brought us the worlds most vibrant middle class and obviously have done so much for all of us. We have a unique obligation to do more for them. The governor says more than 25,000 nurses and doctors have applied to be part of that new state health corp. He announced yesterday. That means thousand of Health Care Students are joining in the balt against covid19. Thom, just yesterday the governor asked for that help and so many people responded. Reporter so inspirational, isnt it . We talked to a semiretired doctor, a seasoned pro seeing covid19 patients and also a student nearing her degree as a nurse, both of them helping out now that the governor has loosened the restrictions on who can join the fight. Hundreds of volunteers have already answered governor newsoms call to action. Its really heartwrenching to see this. Its hard to believe its happening in 2020 america. At 75 and semiretired, dr. Neil handleman will treat patients by computer or smartphone. Exactly. We do it by video or telephone. And its quite useful. Reporter theyre hoping to take the crush off doctors and nurses and triage tests. Were all concerned about the first responders, doctors, nurses. The doctor has handled a dozen or so cases. Meanwhile a Nursing Student says shes already signed up despite the risks. Theres always the concern about catching the disease especially because theres so many unknowns with the virus. Just weeks from graduation, melissa gahn would normally need more experience. But the crisis has changed that. Shes hoping student volunteers will get credits toward their final degree, but shes joining the fight either way. Being able to go out and do something is better than sitting here. Reporter a recent nbc bay area investigation shows there are thousands of students in that same situation as melissa. Raj mathai is working from home today. Were talking about masks. For weeks weve been telling people we dont feed had to wear masks because thats what we were hearing from the white house and now that might be changing, raj. Reporter yeah, whats happening, doctors are saying we need masks and the white house is following suit. Start with today, dr. Anthony fauci who weve been hearing from every day, he said its not official yet but they are on the verge, perhaps, of wanting and requiring americans when you go outside your home or office to wear a mask. Idea of getting a much more broad communitywide use of masks outside the Health Care Setting is under active discussion. What we get in a situation where we have enough masks, i believe there will be some very serious considerations about more broadening this recommendation of using masks. Were not there yet but i think were close to coming to some determination. You can read between the lines there. It seems like we are on the verge of this. Its not n95 masks. This is not the n95. Everyone says save those masks for the first responders, the people, medical crews, front lines. We can make our own masks at home. A lot of Police Departments are posting what theyre doing. Theres a vacuum cleaner manufacturer in minnesota changing their Business Plan and making these masks. You can go to your next door app and see a lot of your neighbors making these masks. The point is to prevent you from putting your hand to your face. Thats one of the biggest ways you can become infected. This comes as we heard from the doctor in new york city, he said in his video message we all need to be wearing masks. The idea here is not that the mask is going to prevent you from getting covid. As i said, its not a disease youre most likely getting from the air. The reason to put on the mask, you just stop touching your face. And so what i would recommend is now when youre leaving your house is to wear a mask. Reporter simple as that. Wear a mask, not the n95. Save those for the medical workers. That will help us not get infected. Well check in on the Great American takeout day. Well see you in a couple of minutes. The stayathome order has many Small Businesses on life support right now.
