From over. In fact, its only beginning. We have learned that within the past 24 hours, there was a 105 increase in patients admitted to the icu. During that same time period, a nearly 40 jump in hospitalizations. That is fueling a push tonight to get even more medical equipment into the state. And all of that coming as the u. S. Reaches a very grim milestone. More than 2,000 people have now died in the u. S. From coronavirus. Just thursday, there were 1,000 deaths. A startling jump in just two days. Lets begin our Team Coverage with nbc bay areas marianne favro. Governor newsom toured a south bay company and theres a new plan that could help a lot of people. Reporter thats right, terry. Before coronavirus, bloom energy was making fuel cells. But now employees have switched gears entirely, and they are now refurbishing ventilators. Now, dozens of those ventilators are on their way to hospitals across the state. Governor gavin newsom says with covid19 sending more californians into intensive care today, the need for ventilators has never been more urgent. No more important moment to meet than addressing the issues of ventilators. The state of california currently has, independent of our hospital system, we have procured and identified some 4,252 ventilators. Our goal is to get to 10,000 ventilators. Reporter dr. Thomas frieden was the head of the cdc during the obama administration. In a worstcase scenario, ventilators would be one of the chokepoints, if you will, for effective response. Its not clear that we would have enough in a worstcase scenario. Reporter today the governor and san jose mayor sam liccardo toured bloom energy in sunnyvale where the company has transformed its storage area into a ventilator assembly line. At the end of the day, here is what we knew. Manufacturing is in our dna. Reporter bloom employees are working on ventilators found across the state that may be expired or not working. Theyve already provided 80 for california hospitals and plan to refurbish 100 more tonight. Others in the bay area are also turning to innovation to help during the coronavirus crisis. Governor newsom says a stanford doctor is working to develop a way to use one ventilator to help two patients at once. In sunnyvale, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. Help coming not just from sunnyvale but from all over california. Governor newsom says 350 companies are offering to change their operations to help combat coronavirus. San franciscobased gap is now working on personal protective equipment or ppes for health care workers. The company says it will make gowns and masks to help people on the front lines. The Governor Newsom also says 7eleven found 1 Million Masks at a facility in stockton and donated them to the state. And beer maker anheuserbusch will begin making hand sanitizer. Ucsf will now have a universal surgical mask policy, and that starts tomorrow. Anyone who walks into a clinic or hospital will be given a mask to wear. The mask is to be worn all day long as theyre in the building. The new rule applies to doctors, nurses, staff, and all visitors, everybody. Earlier today, marc benioff says his Company Salesforce acquired new ppes to make this new rule possible. Here in the bay area, there are a total of 1,700 cases across the region, San Francisco and santa clara counties reporting new cases today. Santa clara nearing 600 cases in all. A potential new law could help curb panic shopping at Grocery Stores but tonight in San Francisco, some new rules are in effect for certain businesses. Nbc bay areas Sergio Quintana has the story. Reporter in neighborhoods across the city, Corner Stores have been a life line during the coronavirus shutdown, especially for people unable to drive for miles to an area supermarket. But when the sun goes down, theyve also attracted a few problems. Weve had a challenge with some of our local Corner Stores where people are congregating outside and sort of attracting crowds. We really want people to stay at home. Reporter mayor london breed Just Announced a new order that takes effect today requiring all stores that are 5,000 square feet or smaller and sell alcohol to close by 8 00 p. M. In dense neighborhoods like the tenderloin, the order affects several businesses. This one, that one, the next block, that one. I could point seven of them from here. Reporter we walked over to one of the Corner Stores. They already had a sign posted telling customers closing time is 8 00 p. M. Nels Nelson Gonzalez usually works until 2 00 a. M. He says hes happy about the new closing rule believing it will be safer with fewer people in the streets. In san mateo county, supervisor joe canepa is trying to tackle panic buying. He held a News Conference to ensure people there is more than enough food at stores. If the panic buying continues, hes considering a law that would cap the number of each product a person could buy. If the lines continue to show like this, were going to have to call for immediate action. I will propose the legislation that i initially proposed, and that is to limit shoppers to just the purchase of four items. Reporter long lines are now the norm at larger supermarkets because stores are limiting the number of people they allow to shop to prevent crowding. Those new rules aimed at Corner Stores like this one were actually issued yesterday by mayor london breed. They went into effect today. Most stores were actually notified today. Every corner store that we checked out in the tenderloin, soma, mid market and here seem to be complying. Reporting live in San Francisco, im Sergio Quintana, nbc bay area news. A free testing site in hayward continues to see long lines. Another one out there today. Hundreds of people showing up to be tested. Even though the site is now limited to people with a fever of more than 100 degrees and other symptoms of covid19. Governor newsom announced that because of increased testing, californias cases jumped 26 in one day. Another 65,000 test results are pending. As of today, nearly 90,000 californians have been tested. Thats up 27,000 from tuesday. Less going on this weekend and folks, thats a good thing. Last weekend so many people flocked to coastal towns, trails and beaches, it was difficult to practice social distancing. Since then, parks and beaches have been shutting down. The idea is to try to get people not to travel for their exercise and instead encourage them to stay at home, exercise close to home to try to slow the spread of covid19. Today the message seemed to have come home. Each day its gotten progressively better, and today by far, as you can see, you know, people are really doing the right thing. Theyre staying in their cars. Theyre placing an order. If they have to come in periodically, someone needs to use the restroom, thats happening. But for the most part, people have done a great job of adjusting pretty quickly. To be honest about it, the rain also helped today, kept people away. People were still out, though. It seemed a lot less busy. The official order has come down from the cdc that People Living in new york, new jersey, and connecticut should cancel any nonessential Domestic Travel plans immediately. The strict travel ban is in effect for 14 days. It does not apply to trucking, health workers, financial workers, anyone involved in food supply and some other essential occupations. The governors of the three States Affected have full discretion to implement the Domestic Travel advisory. Its not clear how or if the advisory is going to be enforced or monitored. The message is clear, though. Stay home to stop the surge in cases. But the president stopped short of ordering a full quarantine of certain coronavirus hot spots in those states, something he considered earlier in the day. The Santa Clara County fairgrounds will soon house the homeless during the crisis. The fairgrounds on tully road will be equipped with emergency trailers in addition to drivethru testing already there. County leaders will tour the fairgrounds tomorrow offering a look at how the facility will be used to help and perhaps when it will be opened. All current shelters in the county already in operation. A Bay Area Hospital on the front lines of the covid19 fight says it is on the verge of running out of personal protective equipment. Seton Medical Center in daly city is accepting coronavirus patients but supplies of masks and other vital protective equipment are running dangerously low. Seton says it has enough for five days but one nurse we spoke to says that estimate seems rather generous. She has had to wait hours for the goahead to use protective gear. I have no clue whether i have the equipment that day to take care of the patients that im about to receive until after ive already gotten a report on the patients. I had to wait over two hours yesterday on a supposed ruleout covid unit to receive isolation gowns. Seton is one of two hospitals the state of california is spending millions on in order to turn them into covid19 patient care centers, and nurses are calling on state and federal leaders to get needed supplies and quickly. Hes also prescribing it to hundreds of his patients with suspected covid19 cases. What i found was there was zero deaths. There were zero intubations, and i only had four hospitalizations. But there are possible dangers including serious heart problems. The mayo clinic issued a warning this week that doctors need to determine which patients are at risk arrythmia.
