Were working on creating some privacy screens so they can the Health Care Providers can move more rapidly within to service their patients. Reporter perhaps no race is as competitive as the race to find n95 masks to protect hospital workers. The unitedhealthcare workers west scored a big find when a spokesperson says the union found a supplier in the east coast who had a warehouse full of 39 million masks. That supplier sold each mask for 5. We have now secured literally 100 million new n95 masks. Reporter the race to meet the demand for medical supplies is setting off a competition no one wants to be in. States are outbidding one another to get medical supplies that their hospitals need, and there is calls for the federal government to step in. Youre hearing it all across the country from statal supplie that they need. Just a few miles up the road in hayward, that testing site continues to see an overflow crowd, and roughly one quarter of the people tested at this location have the coronavirus. The city of hayward says 54 of the 207 people tested this week tested positive. Our nbc bay area sky ranger was overhead, and you can see the line of cars waiting and hoping to get in up as early as 4 00 and 5 00 in the morning. People flooding this location. This is at a hayward fire station. People who dont have a fever, this is important, if you dont have a fever or dont meet certain criteria, you will be turned away. Hayward fire says thats tough because the cdc has implemented instructor guidelines for testing. They want to know if theyre going to be positive or negative. Thats what were trying to provide. Like i said, this situation is constantly evolving. So we can only do what we can do. So what happens once you get tested . The tests then go across the bay to a lab in menlo park that lab is still processing hundreds of tests that were taken earlier this week. The lab has such a backlog that its only conducting 100 tests per day. Okay. Scott budman, nbc bay area news. Interesting story. Thank you, scott. Several weeks ago we started to get flooded with questions about this virus. At that time, we created the Coronavirus Crisis center. Really to try to help answer some of these questions. Now among them, Package Delivery or event restaurant deliveries. What should you do when those things get delivered right to your front porch . Lets bring in janelle wang, who is working fromhome. Whats the guidance here when it comes to those packages . Even though researchers say that the virus could live up to 24 hours on cardboard and three days on stainless steel and plastic. Its very, very unlikely that your packages and your mail and your food deliveries will spread the virus to you. Thats because in all the cases so far, it found that it spread through respiratory droplet, person to person, rather than surface contamination. A u. S. Postal service says there is no evidence it is spread through the mail. The cdc backs that up, saying the risk is very low, and there are no cases linked to contacts with packages. But now be safe, wash your hands with soap and water after getting a food delivery or opening a package. And a senior vp at amazon says you can also leave your package outside or in your garage for a di before bringing it in if you want to be extra cautious. Other people are also wearing disposable gloves and throwing them away, or spraying their package with lysol, or wiping it down with a disinfectant wipe. But those are overly cautious tips. Its safe to get your packages. The best thing to do is wash your hands with soap and water. Raj and jessica . That is good to know. Thank you. The answer to everything is wash your hands. So this morning he decided to use them to help spread Accurate Information about the coronavirus. You know, dr. Fauci. Curry did it with the help of dr. Anthony fauci, the director of National Institutes of allergy and infectious diseases, and probably the most famous doctor on the planet right now. During their halfhour chat on instagram, a lot of numbers were thrown around, like how coronavirus is ten times more serious than the flu, or how were 12 to 18 months away from a vaccine. But nearly 50,000 people tuned in to the chat. Curry understands. His social Media Audience might not otherwise be getting the most Accurate Information. And thats really one of the reasons that i wanted to have this q a and hopefully reach different demographics or people that are interested in the facts of whats going on. Curry admitted during todays interview that he tested negative for coronavirus a week and a half ago after feeling flulike symptoms. The system was set up different. Fauci said he did the right thing. Said testing is finally becoming more and more available, and that, fauci says, will help us get ahold of this virus, but only if everyone is on board. We can start thinking about getting back to some degree of normality when the country as a whole has turned that corner and start coming down. Useful information delivered to people who need it by two of the very best in their very different fields. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. Good job, steph. Okay. No toilet paper, no antiseptic whites and patiently no canned corn. Food hoarding isnt just impacting people, animals e art about tp, they are running low on a staple of their diet, corn. I willy tan is live in San Francisco. The caregivers of the swans say they need some distance appropriate help from the public now. Reporter oh, absolutely. Care takers say that corn is crucial for swans at this time of year. Its the way they fatten them up before nesting season. But hen they went to the stores, local stores and suddenly couldnt find any, they panicked. But take a look now. Just a day after asking for donations. People have responded, rolling dozens of cans of corn under the fence. During the covid19 crisis, its not only humans struggling to find the necessities. Its mating season for the swans at San Franciscos palace of fine arts. So this nibbling is actually about territory, not hunger. But 24yearold blanch and 13yearold blue boy are at risk of losing a crucial part of their diet, corn, which helps their bodies prepare for nesting. Well, i felt a little panicked at first. Reporter gail haggerty, the palaces swan caretaker of 25 years posted a message online, noting that because of food hoarding, she couldnt buy necessary corn in bulk. Oh, my gosh, we heard on nextdoor that our swans were not able to get the food that they needed because of the shortage. Reporter and people responded right away, lobbing or rolling cans of corn beyond the gardners fence. The swans needed food, corn in particular. So we decided to bring our last two cans over. Reporter an emotional gesture to the swans caretaker, who has been in quarantine for the past ten days after being potentially exposed to covid19. Im so happy. I was like pumping my fist when i saw those cans being put underneath the fence for the birds. Its really heartwarming. Ror donations have rolled inhr while the caretaker is still in quarantine. And an Important Note before we go. The caretaker says anyone is welcome to donate, but please do not feed the swans or any other animals here directly. Were live in San Francisco, he will lili tan. Thank you implement jeff, usually on thursday we say okay the weekend is around the corner. All the days blend into each other now. They all feel like the weekend sort of. I know. I was thinking right . But you know, maybe at least this weekend, you guys, you can take a break from the home schooling and the work from home for some of us, maybe, right . So weekend might still have a little bit of that meaning forbe you if you just are going to be trying to step away from that home schooling. And there is going to be some changes as we hit saturday and also on sundays forecast. Lets bring you in right now to that look at the live and also. And we have some spotty showers today with some isolated small hail reports and low snow down to 3,000 feet. As we zoom in closer, im doing all of this from home. We have the same computers here at my house that we have back at the station. And you will see some showers over downtown san jose. This is tracking off toward the south. That could continue some moderate rain down to alameda through 6 55 tonight. I do think dry weather returns on fridays forecast. Well go for a partly cloudy sky. Notice the temperature here for the michael jordan. 30s to 40s to start, and partly cloudy through the afternoon. Ive also warmed up those temps to the upper 50s and low 60s from the north bay down to the south bay. Now i dont want to pile on. I know a lot of us are dealing with covid19, the shelter in place. But we did get our new draught monitor update today. We have moderate drought returned to parts of the bay area. Were continuing to monitor that. But i did think you guys would be interested in the longrange outlook. So here is a preview of that. Right now no el nino orla la n. Neutral at this point. Chance of rain for weekend on the way. And right now 70 chance of more rain in april with some on and off storm systems. Ill take a look at the weekend rain chance and whats coming our way. Vial that in about 25 minutes. So, raj, i think its still okay. We can still be pumped up about that weekend. You too, jess. Thank you, jeff. Okay. Signs for the coronavirus. But what are some possible other symptoms . Were going to talk to nbcs chief medical correspondent, next. We made usaa insurance for members like martin. An air force veteran made of doing whats right, not whats easy. So when a hailstorm hit, usaa reached out before he could even inspect the damage. Thats how you do it right. Usaa insurance is made just the way martins family needs it with hasslefree claims, he got paid before his neighbor even got started. Because doing right by our members, thats whats right. Usaa. What youre made of, were made for. Usaa we find a way through it. Its about taking care of each other. Its the small parts that make a big difference. At chevy, we promise to do ours. Were offering chevy owners complimentary onstar crisis assist services and wifi data. If you need a new chevy, interestfree financing for 84 months with deferred payments for 120 days on many of our most popular models. You may even shop online and take delivery at home. Its just our way of doing our part. Im janelle wang reporting from home. As we know, there are three main symptoms of the coronavirus, dry cough, shortness of breath, and fever. But there are also some nonclassic symptoms were lettering about. Here is dr. John torres. He is an emergency room doctor and an nbc news medical correspondent. Se of taste. We think the reason this is happening is because the virus gets up into their nose area where they have those smell nerve receiptors. It occupies those nerve receiptors and ends up deadening them for a while. So you lose the sense of smell and taste. Another one, the nonclassic symptoms that you see are headache, gastrointestinal problems, this smell issue, and pink eye is another one. It didnt happen in many cases. In the studies we did, it was less than 1 and came with other symptoms. But we know its a virus that can get into the eyes. And people start getting redness to the eyes, start getting eye discharge. Its another reason you want to wash your hands before you touch your face, particularly your eyes or nose or mouth. So, again, that pink eye symptom is extremely rare. Maybe a 1 . It usually is going along with other symptoms of the coronavirus. But the loss of taste and smell, a lot of people are experiencing that. Doctors in south korea say 33 of their patients are losing their sense of taste and smell. But in all the cases the patients got those sensories, their sense back. They didnt lose their taste and smell forever. They all came back eventually. That is good to hear. That is comforting. Thank you, janelle. Well, up next at 6 30, establishing new guidelines for the coronavirus. President trumps plan to get communities back up and running. Also, he has been an economic adviser for several u. S. President s. So what does robert reich think about this stimulus package . Well tell you right now he thinks the American Public is getting robbed. He joins us next. We are tmobile the first to go unlimited. First with no annual service contracts. First with taxes and fees included. Now tmobile has the first and only nationwide 5g network. Reaching over 5,000 cities and towns and over 200 million americans. And tmobile is not charging extra for 5g access. Because this isnt our network. Its yours. Right now at 6 30, the United States has passed a grim milestone. More than one thousand deaths have been reported across the country from covid19, and we have more cases than china. As this pandemic worsens, President Trump is dealing with all the factors. Today he said his administration is developing new guidelines that would rate each individual county across the country. Yeah, that teared system will categorize counties into high risk, medium risk and low risk. The expectation is the guidelines would hel mors decid to maintain, increase, or relax their social distancing rules. Sections of our country, we may take large sections of our country that arent so seriously affected, and we may do it that way. But weve got to start the process pretty soon. Public Health Experts have said that easing social distancing restrictions too soon could overburden hospitals and eventually lead to more deaths and more economic damage related to the virus. Now record breaking, thats the way to describe the unemployment surge in the u. S. Right now. Three million americans filed for unemployment last week. And it comes as the Senate Approved that 2 trillion emergency relief plan. The bill now heads to the house. Speaker of the house nancy pelosi says they will vote tomorrow. It will pass with a strong bipartisan support. Lets do it in a way that stays focused on the kitchen tables of americas families. The bill includes billions of dollars for hospitals and small businesses. It also funds 1200 checks. The president has been talking about. Those checks will be sent by mail or direct deposit to people making less than 75,000 a year. There is a formula for that for couples and for children. The treasury secretary says the checks will be sent out within three weeks, and you dont need to sign up for anything, as long as you have been working and paying taxes since 2018. Those unemployment numbers didnt slow down wall street. The dow soared for a Third Straight day, but the markets are still down overall, nearly 20 over the past month. The optimism on wall street is because of the bailout. The dow, s p and nasdaq, you can see all in green with positive numbers. Well, all this money about to be spent, and all those people losing their jobs, are we doing the right thing with that 2 trillion . The short answer, no. Thats according to robert reich. He is a familiar face in the bay area and in washington, d. C. Reich is the former labor secretary for president clinton and a former Public Policy professor at uc berkeley. He industry, not airlines, not cruise ships should be bailed out. They can stay in business by borrowing at rock bottom rates using their assets as collateral. Joining us now from berkeley is professor reich. Nice to have you back on the program. Lets get right to it. You are not happy with the way were going to spend this 2 trillion . How come. Well, there are some good things in the bill, but the biggest expenditure is for corporations, bailing out big airlines and cruise Ship Operators and hotels and the like. They dont need to be bailed out. Thats wasted money. We need to spend every dollar we have on people, on the people who need it, on individuals who are home. They should be home. They should be safe. But they need income in order to get through this. And thats where the federal taxpayer dollars ought to be going. Just from a laymans term, if the corporations get help, therefore they can keep hiring and keep their employees. That correct . Well, there is nothing in the bill that requires most corporations to keep hiring. In fact, there is nothing in the bill that requires most corporations to maintain existing employments. There is barely anything in the bill that sets a cap to ceo pay. And like we learned during the bailout of the wall street in 2008, those ceos get paid a lot of money, and thats taxpayer dollars going directly into their pockets. You brought up 2008. That was president obama that was the democrats fighting for that bailout of the auto industry. And now how come we cant bail out the Airline Industry . They are job providers, are they not . Well, the Airline Industry actually is a job provider if they agreed to keep all of their employees on. Industry is generally speaking are not agreeing to doing anything like this. Thats one of the problems with the bailout. Were just going to be paying businesses, Large Businesses to stay afloat. Where those businesses have been using the tax break that they got in the end of 2017 to buy back their shares of stock. Nothing trickled down. In fact, what we saw from the wall street bailout of 2008 and the big trump tax cut of 20172018 is when you give big, big oochlamounts of money to bi corporations, nothing trickles down. That is going to be the same thing now. Why pay 500 billion to these big corporations . They can take care of themselves. They can certainly negotiate with their creditors. Were not going lose the Airline Industry or the cruise ship industry or big hotel chains. Theyre going to do quite well. Inton. You know the inner worplment ju. A big chunk of those people are here in california. When are we going get our jobs back . Thats just a big question. Am i going to get my job back in a month, six months or will it ever come back . I assume that the jobs will come back. But the real question is making sure that you get money right now to take care of yourself and your family. And the primary objective here is not to get the job back. The primary objective is to be safe from this virus to stop the virus from growing at a rate that makes it impossible for people to get the health care and the medical assistance they need. The number one goal here is to fight this coronavirus, not to revive the economy. Is it enough, whether its 1200 in our pockets, 2400 in our pockets or 6,000 in our pocket, it enough for individuals to get back on track . And when will they . Well, its not enough. 1200, a onetime payment of 1200 not enough. The part of the new bill that has to do with Unemployment Insurance is much better, but even that is going to be not enough, because most people who are looking at this, im talking about Public Health officials and epidemiologists, they have been telling us that this is going to last for several months, maybe three or four, possibly five months. And the most important thing is to, as i said, get people the kind of income support they need as well as the medical help, the medical help they need. Enough to worry about companies right now. I expect that 2 trillion, it sounds like a lot, but it probably is going to be the First Tranche if we take this seriously and understand what we have to do. Remember, this is a 21 trillion economy per year normally we can afford to make sure that all of our citizens are safe during this economic and Public Health emergency. Robert, thank you for your time. Thank you for your uninsight. We lock forward to our next conversation. Thanks very much. Byebye. Up next, the vta trainee tests positive for the coronavirus. What it means for light rail trains in the south bay. When we face adversity, we find a way through it. Its about taking care of each other. Its the small parts that make a big difference. Two tesla employees have tested positive for covid19. A company wide email sent to the staff did not disclose the workers locations or job functions. This comes after tesla essentially shut down its fremont factory after days of back and forth with the Alameda County sheriff whether tesla is considered an essential business. 32 people in the bay area have lost their lives to covid19. And among them is a south bay woman. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Her family says she would have given you her last dollar. She loved to cook for a houseful of people while doting on her grandkids. She worked at a food max Grocery Store in san jose. After testing positive, that store was shut down so it could be cleaned. She got the virus while traveling and hadnt worked since march 6. After returning home from disneyland, her daughter says she rushed her to the hospital and martinez never came back home. She was my best friend, my daughters best friend. She always gave me the best advice and loved me unconditionally. We spent all of our time together. Her family did tell us that she did have an underlying condition. She was insulindependent. Heartbreaking stories there. This could impact a lot of essential workers. Vta is now shut down. All Light Rail Service because a worker tested positive. All the trains are parked and being deep cleaned before returning to service. 60 employee, including operators, trainees and maintenance workers are now home for the time being. The agency says its doing all it can to keep riders safe. We have an essential service that we provide, and we need everybody to do their parts to ensure the safety in all the public and our operators. No word yet on when Light Rail Service will resume. But you can see here vta bus service is still operating. Okay. A lot of us have been asking this question and wondering, will you develop immunity to covid19 if you get it. Thats the question doctors are trying to answer. There are many people who experience flulike symptoms before doctors began detecting the virus in the u. S. And now doctors are wondering if some of those people actually had the virus. One doctor told us its hard to say since there isnt an antibody yet to test it. We know from before common cold viruses that you do develop immunity, but its not longlasting. So that you can get infected over and over again. So were thinking this is like the common cold virus, again, we dont know that for sure yet. And thats a big push to try to figure that out is that will we need to get an annual vaccine, for example. Dr. Maldonado told us stanford is working on getting a reliable Antibody Test within weeks, but it may take months. Lets get a smile on our face, bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri working from home in the east bay. Rain or shine, we dont care. Just to get out and go for a walk, jeff. Tomorrow is going to be god for the kids. The parents maybe for early exercising in the morning, and well show you when some weekend rain moves in. Ill get you all ready to go here in about six minutes. The Public Health folks say its a good idea to have some extra medicine on hand. But getting that accomplished, well, you might run into a hurdle. Im consumer investigator chris chmura. Ill legal you get over it after this break. Okay. As we shelter at home for the next few weeks, one thing to keep an eye on is your supply of prescription medicine. Consumer investigator chris chmuras challenge how to overcome that potential limit. They only let you get sometimes a month at a time. Then what happens . Im going to show you what you need to do. Pick up your phone and call the your insurance company. The stay at home order allows you to make trips to the pharmacy. Fair warning, you might face a hurdle like alexander did. Heres what we told us on twitter. Just aheads up, i called my pharmacy to get my prescriptions refilled. My pharmacist tells me that my insurance doesnt allow for refills if its within 25 days of my last refill. Well, refill prescriptions are ordinarily in place to limit the abuse. But the rules can be bypassed. Here is how. You call your Health Insurance and request this, a prescription override that will let the pharmacist temporarily increase your supply. Basically same as requesting an extra refill before a long trip. The key lingo, use this phrase, right here, prescription override. You might get the green light instantly, but good rx cautions that some health plans might require an exception form or authorization from your doctor. Still, give yourselves some time to jump through the hoops. Good rx says the process can sometimes take about three days. Im happy to report alexander formed up and said he was ultimately able to successfully get that override. Were taking virusrelated questions each day. Send yours via our website. Go to nbcbayarea. Comer call 888996tips. Coming up in just a couple of minutes at 7 00, were going dive into data about the products people are panic buying right now, and where theyre spending all that money. Raj . Well see you in just a few minutes. All those weekend visitors that we saw last weekend have led to more changes at some of our most popular bay area spots. A lot of notable areas will remain closed, including muir woods, alcatraz, and lands end. No word when the sites will reopen. Some trails will remain accessible, but park rangers ask that you follow, you know this now, social distancing guidelines. Lets bring chief meteorologist jeff ranieri working from home. If we go out tomorrow or this weekend, go around the block, go to your local park, take your dog for a walk and just keep your distance. Yeah. Exactly. Its going to be a really, really nice day for your dogs. We see thought wed give her another little opportunity to say hi to everybody at home. Weve got some great weather coming our way as we head through tomorrow. If you do want to get outside, as jessica said and take your dog for a walk or go for a jog yourself, just remember that social distancing. As we get a closer look at the doppler radar, we have started to see a few spotty showers moving in across the bay area this afternoon. Nothing overly heavy. But as youll see as we zoom in on this, most of the activity has been right down towards the south bay. Some scattered showers over san jose, also morgan hill and gilroy. Even getting in on a little bout of some heavier rainfall. This will continue certainly as we head through the next 30 to 45 minutes down over gilroy. I do expect dry weather to return on friday. Its going to be a short break before we get some weekend rain in here. The next thing will also look ahead towards is some cold weather tomorrow. So if you are headed mount the front or the backyard to just get some fresh air tomorrow morning or a little bit of a jog around your house, temperatures will be in the 30s for the trivalley. 42 in the south bay. Well have a mix of sun and clouds. Down as cold as 37 for the north bay and 39 in the east bay. Temperatures for tomorrow afternoon, i do see them warming by about 2 to 5 degrees slowly. Be slightly warmer. I think it will be noticeable down here through the south bay with 60 in san jose. Also, 59 in cupertino, and a little bit breezy, winds out of the northwest at 14.
