Were seeing that tonight. Lets bring in ian cull. Tell us what youre seeing. Reporter were at the market in edgewood, but it could be any store in the bay area. This is the store ive been to. The viewers are really reaching out to us. Were going to do a little walkthrough. The pasta aisle is basically empty. You might be able to get some lasagne noodles. Meats mostly out as well. There is a lot of fresh fruit that people seem to be stocking up on, but theyve got a good supply here. Potatoes, running low on those as well, and onions, even, as well. One of the things, though, that theyre running out of a lot is the foezrozen food, the frozen dinners, the pizza, unfortunately, one of my favorites, then the meat as well. This is the organic aisle. Its completely wiped out. The butcher is out of many things. The owner tells me this really isnt the best time to go to the Grocery Store, because right now some stores are adjusting their schedules to give themselves time to restock. Theyre also receiving half their shipment sometimes, not because food is running low but because demand is so high. Even as there is a rush to buy groceries, keep in mind that Grocery Stores are going to remain open, and here at the market in edgewood, theyre calling all their people in. The chef is even helping people bag in the front as well. But a lot of people going out and buying groceries. Remember, its still going to be a shelter in place, but this is a pretty common sight across the bay area. Within the last 30 minutes, another stunning announcement from San FranciscoHealth Officials. 30 Homeless People are in the hospital with symptoms and have been tested for the virus, but the results of those tests are not available yet. People staying in their homes means rough roads ahead for local restaurants, many of which were already struggling because of coronavirus fears. Scott budman is live in Mountain View for that part of the story. Scott . Reporter good evening, janelle. Many of the restaurants are normally busier. They have been struggling since the onset of coronavirus. Some tell us they are worried about even paying their staff. Tonight restaurants all along the bay area face a new challenge, not just a few regular customers gunshy to go out and eat a little meal with friends, those customers have been told to stay home, so the restaurant has to change to a takeoutbased business. Now they hope people are still hungry for Mediterranean Food and want to order takeout. People still at home, this is citywide. Everyone is working at home in the office, and they will need company, you know . Reporter he worries even if local residents choose takeout orders, restaurants will still struggle because companies arent ordering food for meetings and other gatherings, and they woint fnt for a while these restaurants are extra worried because they really have no idea how long this will last. Live in Mountain View, scott budman, nbc bay area news. Peeiece of my heart, a local pizza eatery, said delivery in wuhan went up 40 . At that leads us to Jessica Aguirre reporting from her home. Jessica, weve been doing this for years. This is certainly a first. What are some things we can do at home to stay safe . Reporter well, raj, thats the whole goal for me being at home, us staggering, which in a week or so, ill be able to go back to work and youll be able to go home to ensure someone is always healthy at the studio to do the news. One of the things ive implemented for myself at home is taking my temperature twice a day just to be sure. Im at 97. 2, making sure i stay healthy. I spent the day sanitizing my house, following the cdc guidelines, which is really going through every single doorknob in my house, every surface, using the antibacterial that says its registered with the epa. Then every faucet, really following my steps through the house where we touch. Then after that i lysoled it all. I did the same thing with my car, set up my car. I have a big box of gloves that i carry with me everywhere i go. If i leave the house, ive got my mask as well if i need to use that. And really the big thing is anybody who comes in and out of my house has to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water, warm water for 30 seconds, and theres just no exception for that. Reporter we certainly have a czechlist based on what you said. Weve done that in our newsroom and now throughout our homes. Well check with you throughout the week. Stay with us. This shelter in place order impacting all parts of life. What it means for our criminal justice system. Also a pizza restaurant doing what it can to help those forced to stay at home, especially senior citizens. Make more of whats yours. There is going to be a real log jam in Santa Clara County because of the new directive. They made a drastic cut in cases. How this directive to stay in place, shelter in place in six counties, are impacting trials is robert handa. Reporter they started going down the list of cases they would take on, delaying just about every civil case except those involved with custody or domestic violence. But there will be no shelter in place here. This is the long line of people waiting to get into court this morning. At that point, socalled out of custody cases, people charged with nonviolent crimes, were still on the calendars. There were about 20 people in the courtroom sitting very close. Reporter they were sitting close . Very close. The seats in the courtroom are right next to each other. Reporter what are your concerns . My concerns are anybody could walk in there, have the coronavirus and spread it. Reporter the head of the Court Clerks Union says his 400 members agree. Honestly, theyre so scared right now. We have a lot of contact with the public, so been getting calls all morning where theyre not understanding where we are continuing to do this. Reporter the Public Defenders Office also expressed concerns about the lack of effective screening of people with symptoms or considered high risk. Late this afternoon the court began reassessing what are essential services as well as essential personnel. But legal analyst steven clark points out people in custody have a constitutional right to a trial regardless of Public Health concerns. What youll see is perhaps jury trials taking place in nontraditional fashions or in nontraditional courtrooms. Reporter but one potential juror whose case was put off until april says coronavirus fears are already taking its toll. Theres problems right now finding people to sit on a jury because some are sick or afraid of becoming sick. Reporter now, its going to be interesting to see how the courts balance the legal and health issues. You could see juries watching on monitors from another room. Regardless, just from the cases that will now not be heard, steve clark says it could take until the end of the year to deal with the backlog. Live in san jose, robert handa, nbc bay area news. The streets eerily quiet behind handa there. What about the people in jail . Beginning today, visiting someone in jail in Sonoma County is no longer allowed. All personal visitations are suspended. In addition, any legal visits. So if you want to meet with your legal representation, your lawyer, thats going to have to be done online and by appointment. Several other bay area jails are preparing to take similar steps. Weve seen random acts of kindness in the bay area during these trying times, and this is the perfect example. The owner of this pizza delivery is serving people. Hes doing deliveries. I deliver to people over their 70s because theyre more susceptible to the virus. He said people are so happy to see their pizza delivered, they have break down and cried. As of tonight, it looks like ohios governor will not be able to postpone the state primary there in ohio. It will go ahead tomorrow as planned. Also worth noting, arizona, florida and illinois are still scheduled to hold their primaries tomorrow as well. Georgia and louisiana have been able to postpone their elections. Okay, first tom hanks and now british actress idris elba. He has testified positive for the coronavirus even though he has no symptoms. He said he got tested after someone he had been exposed to tested positive. His wife sabrina is sharing his isolation. Transparency is probably the best thing for this right now. If youre feeling ill or youre feeling like you should be tested and youve been exposed, do something about it, all right . Its really important. He added this is a time for solidarity, quote, stay positive and dont freak out. Janelle, what was the guidance . Even if youre feeling a little sick, right, if you think you might have a fever or a cough, the Health Director saying just stay home voluntarily, go to a separate room in your house if youre able to be alone in a room. Your family can still be in the house, you just need to be in a separate room, and when you go back and forth to the bathroom, when you do, dont have contact with your family. And call your doctor and get advice from there. Okay, a lot of people have been stuck at home. They want to get outside and get some fresh air. Lets get a check of the forecast with rob miatta. Rob . A few brief thundershowers still dropping hail around parts of the bay area. There it is close to San Francisco where we do have those partly cloudy skies. Off to the west of san jose and to south, weve seen hailproducing showers near the an did he s andes mountains. Moving off to palo alto, northview seeing those showers. Santa rosa, you just had a recent Lightning Strike there. And notice the coverage. These are isolated showers of the cold air aloft. The heat of the day stabilizes the atmosphere. You see clouds build during the course of the day. Were likely to see more of that tomorrow after the rain that we were brought this weekend slowly moves to the south. There will be areas in the south bay that see the snow around hamilton, scattered showers at times, and a continuation of these temperatures. Morning temperatures in the 30s to low 40s and highs during the day tomorrow staying in the low 50s. Still more showers during the day. But the second half of the week should trend a little dryer. Friday looks to be the driest and warmest day of the week. Then as we head into the weekend, a similar pattern to what we see right now could bring more snow to the sierra and more rain to the bay area. This march continues through the weekend. Up next at 6 00, google is helping during this health crisis, but is it as President Trump advertised . We investigate, next. Welcome back to our special coverage of the shelter in place. Janelle wang is in the newsroom, im raj mathai here in the studio. One of the big issues here, a lot of back and forth regarding google. Are they helping the white house or are they not . Yeah, raj, the Mountain View company made the website to help people track the coronavirus, but what rolled out today was a far cry from the president s promise last week. Google is helping to develop a website. Its going to be very quickly done, unlike websites of the past, to determine if a test is warranted and facilitate testing at a nearby location. Sdp so it is done, the website is up, but its not nearly what the president described. Reporter what the president promised doesnt yet exist here in the bay area, or anywhere else, for that matter. Googles Sister Company barely designed the pilot website which features a questionnaire that people can use to diagnose their symptoms and when necessary it would direct people to testing sites, but only in san mateo and santa clara counties. The goal is to expand to other locations as soon as possible. But at this point the website has stopped offering any test appointments. Its been online for one day in just two counties, but already it appears to be inundated. The Public Health director says he doesnt know when it will reach his area. I dont know specifics at this point, but they are working with us and a couple other counties to try to develop a pilot. I would emphasize that this is a pilot intervention, as we understand at this time, and we want to make sure that given the National Limitation of test kit availability, which has really hobbled our ability to respond, that those tests are reserved for those who really need it the most. Reporter they hope to one day reach the goal the president has described, which is a onecompany website. But for now its far from national, and its struggling even locally. Thank you so much for that update. Up next at 6 30, calling for everyone to be good neighbors. Six bay area counties, as weve been mentioning, issued a shelter in place order. What this means for the nearly 7 Million People affected. Also, what if we do our part but others dont follow . We talked to an Infectious Disease doctor about this shelter in place. A lot more coverage and answers coming up in the next one hour. Wild thing, you make my heart sing. You make everything. Groovy. Done yet . Yeah, yeah, sorry, sorry. You sure . Hmm. Mmm. Thats about 7 Million People. You can leave your home to do something essential like shop for food, pick up supplies or prescriptions and go visit some elderly family members. Dr. Janelle wang is here. Janelle, everyone is asking what are essential workers . Everyone is asked not to go to work tomorrow, but among the essential workers, first responders, health care workers. There is a list on our website if you want to see if you have to go to work tomorrow. Take a look at this map. This is where its happening. Alameda, contra costa, marin, santa clara and san mateo counties. They want to get a grasp on this and not see any spikes. You can see Santa Clara County has the most with 138. Earlier in the newscast we told you about two new deaths in Santa Clara County, bringing the total number of deaths to four. We also learned a Santa Clara Police officer has tested positive. That officer is now at home in isolation and is expected to make a full recovery. Weve been going with our live coverage for about eight or nine hours nonstop, almost, and we sat with all our mayors for their various responses, and essentially it was follow the guidelines, but also dont panic because we will get through this, but were trying to minimize here the damage and the death. Well get through it together. Jodi hernandez was in that news conference. She has more what city workers clarified football mean for oakland. Reporter the city should be proud that the bay area is leading the way in stopping the spread of covid19. Again, she says that the best thing people could do is just stay home. We have an opportunity to keep our friends, our neighbors, our loved ones healthy and safe. Oakland mayor libby schaaf is urging people to take the order issued by Alameda County seriously. She said stay inside as much as, b as much as possible. Weng can go through our essential tasks throughout the day. That means Grocery Stores and delivery places will remain open. She said there is no need to rush to the Grocery Store for all items. There is no need to panic or run to stockpile. Ro reporter residents we talked to said they understand the need to play it safe. This is the first time i had to parent my parents. They wanted me to come over and i said, man, ive got to stay away. We have to selfquarantine. My grandmother would not like any of us to die of the coronavirus, so i appreciate if everyone would selfquarantine and respect that not everybody has the ability to recover from this. Were back here at the plaza where you can see people are milling about hours before this shelter in place order takes effect. Poli Oakland Police say they will be out educating people to adhere to the order but they will not be issuing citations. They said they could issue citations, but they dont want to go there. Reporting live in oakland, im jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. We all have so many questions when it comes to the shelter in place, and really, the Bigger Picture here, will we be okay and is the worst yet to come . We know some of those answers but lets bring in our doctor here, dr. Sudambramanian. Doctor, what is the purpose of the shelter in place. Were trying to limit the spread of the infection, but especially those with high risk complications, the elderly and Certain Health conditions. Were also trying to preserve our hospital capabilities. If we overwhelm the hospital with people who need mechanical ventilation or other invasive support, we wont have enough things to treat them with. So we really need to reduce the spread of this infection. Dr. Subramanian, spo ive s with many doctors. You know whats happening at stanford, but doctors have said were under siege. How correct is that of a statement . I think we are prepared for this, we are doing our best, but were trying not to get overwhelmed by it. It is enough to have to wear all the ppe and go in and see these patients there. Some of them are quite sick. I dont know if i would call it under siege, but we are being challenged. We thank you for clarifying and really trying to talk us all through this at the same time. What concerns you most based upon what weve seen in wuhan, china and italy . What specifically about the bay area in these next three to eight weeks . I think we really need to do whats right. I think its going to be really tough. Nobody says its going to be easy. I think we all have to do our part. Its going to be is three weeks going to be enough . We dont know that, but we are going to have to do our best so that later on down the road we dont regret, oh, we should have done something that would have stopped this. Very good point. Will this work for all of us sheltering in place at these various communities . Will it work outside the bay area, or if people outside the bay area dont follow and theyre coming into the bay area . Right now there is no Domestic Travel ban. Yeah, i mean, well have to impose these types of restrictions in each area that has a lot of community transmission. Right now we are seeing the wave, so this is where we need to act. But in the future, other communities are going to have to do this as well to avoid the spread of the infection from there to other places. We understand this is a very busy time for you, so we appreciate your time, dr. Subramanian from San Francisco. Thank you. Its not just Grocery Stores that are overwhelmed, its marijuana dispensaries, too. Thom jensen is live outside the bay area store im sure seeing long lines, thom . Reporter many people told us as soon as they heard the shelter in place orders, they rushed out to buy their essential needs, not hoarding, just getting what they need. But what about the medical marijuana dispensaries, like youre talking about, the recreational as well . That is still a gray area. Inside this San Francisco safeway, shoppers back to back packed in lines at checkstands and emptying shelves. Ztz this is the second time weve experienced this kind of insanity. This is a little more uncertain in a way. Its a strange time to live in. Alex goro and dan smith lived through september 11th in the heart of new york city. Now theyre trying to get through this like everyone else and try to stay optimistic. We can talk about the 1988 pandemics and ultimately they ceased. Well get on top of it. Reporter an emergency room nurse said she gave up on groceries when she saw the lines, but shes glad the bay area is implementing orders to stay home. Its an inconvenience, but its for the safety of everybody. Those of us working in the emergency room on the front lines appreciate it for sure. Reporter as of tonight, city Officials Say theyre still working out the details when it comes to dispensaries and whether or not theyll be allowed to stay open. And i just got off the phone with somebody at the citys covid19 information center. He told me city officials are talking with cannabis control folks, dispensary owners and others, try to figure out those rules for dispensaries as we speak. One thing we saw across the street was a lot of people practicing that social distancing themselves without being told to. Thats so important as Health Officials have said, stay in your home. If you do go outside and practice distancing, thats the way well stop the curve and slow the spread of covid19. Thom jensen, nbc bay area news. Now more than ever it needs donations to try to make up for the loss of income. We bring in rob ietta, our meteorologist, and so many of our museums are shut down. We just hope museums, aquariums, when all of this is said and done, they can rebound. And charities. A lot of fundraisers that were associated with nbc are cancelling.
