As you head out to work we are seeing the waves of rain coming through mostly po lly for the e this is what we expected as we get a look at some of the snow falling on some of the bay area hills. Also some snow on some of the Santa Cruz Mountains as well in the upper elevations. Light rain in san jose but weve seen the heavier rain moving through the east bay. Well be tracking this as we see it continuing for today. More on that in a few minutes. Mike, youve been tracking the roads. Its tough to see on our cameras. We have rain on the lenses itself. Make sure your wipers are in good condition. There are fewer folks here at the toll plaza. Were looking for a lighter commute. Obviously changes over the weekend and changes all last week have led to a much, much lighter commute around the bay. The blue in the north bay shows where thats likely to be ponding and puddling on the roadways as i80 and 680, a smooth drive despite a crash on highway 24. 92 at 280 a minor kroosh. Im getting more details that just happened. Look at the roadways, wet. Light traffic as you said. Major recommendation from Governor Newsom to close bars and wineries in california to increase social distancing and all getting mixed reaction. Newsom says this will keep large groups of people from coming into contact with each other and could stop the spread of the coronavirus. Some critics say that newsom is overreacting and Small Businesses will suffer immensely. The owner of the irish pub in San Francisco, well, they say theyve been gearing up for st. Patricks day but now dont know what to do. Every small bar bought a lot of inventory for this day, for tuesday, and they cant get rid of the inventory. Its affecting a lot of Small Businesses. Newsom recommending restaurants to limit the number of people allowed inside by half but theyre not being ordered to close down. Testing is supposed to ramp up. The federal government is setting up hundreds of Community Test sites. Each will be able to test up to 4,000 people a day. Health care workers and seniors with symptoms will have top priority. Also right this minute people in the bay area have a project site meant to provide screening and connect highrisk people to drivethrough testing sites. You have to live within 50 miles of santa clara and san mateo counties and be willing to sign an authorization form. At least two Bay Area Health branches are setting up drivethrough testing sites. Also, Stanford Express care is offering drivethrough in its system. Trials will begin on a vaccine meant to protect against the coronavirus. A government source says the trial will take place in some 2 dozen Young Healthy volunteers in seattle. It will take one year to 18 months to validate. The grand princess is expected to leave around 8 00 this morning. It will be anchored in the San Francisco bay with its crew and about Six International passengers. A live look at the cruise ship. San Francisco Mayor london breed will update the city on some of the new policies implemented relating to the epidemic. I found out while live at costco on friday about the supply issue, the toilet paper poording, all of that, from the county Health Director all of the schools in our county were going to be canceled. I knew that my kids then at that point were going to be home from school for about three weeks so im thinking about serving you and getting you information while im wondering how this will impact my life. We spent the weekend talking about the reason for the social distancing, doing some examples and talking about why it is we need to isolate ourselves at this point. We did get out and about a little bit on saturday because the information has been changing so quickly we thought we could go to the Farmers Market because it was open air, and we were out in the sunshine and it would be safe if we kept a good distance. By sunday my husband and i decided to shut it down. Were not going out except for outside. Theyre swimmers and used to swimming every day. Thats out of the question at this point. We went to our local track. Ive never seen kids willingly run laps around a track but they had a lot of nervous energy. So i was comforter in chief this weekend, did focus on them. Ill show you the piles of things we did while we were here at home. We have library books, a lot of digital content, a good resource as well. We played more board games than i thought was possible, and i come from a huge board game family. Thank goodness i have been hoarding them for years. I saw online you were playing twister with the kids and making sure the house was sanitized. We did a lot of that as well, came up with protocols like take your shoes off as soon as you walk in the house, leave them outside, try and put lysol in them but not too much because we dont know if well be able to replenish the supply. I saw marcus is in the studio, alan and my cameraman are not coming back to the studio, to make sure if theres an exposure we have a second string. We want to be here for the community and give them the information as well but were the media but were media moms like you. We didnt leave the house and we have a routine where we take off our shoes every day already. It will be interesting to see to coming up with ideas of what theyre going to do now regarding schoolwork. Our kids, this is our fun and games we had, but the schoolwork itself, this was us playing twister. I was the first person out, by the way. They thought that was funny. Our school is going to be doing online courses for these kids. It will be interesting to see that. I know the teachers have been gearing up. The company is warning shipping times are slower due to more people shopping online. What will continue for the day and the week . Finally spring is kind of arriving later this week, kari. Thursday. It feels more like winter because weve had such cool weather. Were looking at highs in the 50s for the next couple of days. Then we also have this rain coming through, and its been definitely not a disappointment in parts of the bay area although in the north bay you havent seen as much of the rain but this is what were expecting with the axis of the heaviest rain from San Francisco to the east bay on southward. And then where we see quite a few colors on the map here. So were seeing green indicating some light rain and then where we see the whites and the blues that shows where we have some snow coming down, and thats not only around mt. Hamilton but also some of the peaks in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We head to the east bay, some of our upper elevations above 2,000 feet getting some snow. Elsewhere some heavy rain. Then we go to the north bay once again. Some of the Higher Elevations getting snow while in the north bay. Not a lot of rain here. Here is a look at the wide view of this storm system coming in and here is the center of the low pressure that as it comes in later on today will bring in the possibility that we could see small hail especially with some of the storms coming through. For the rest of the day we will see this activity tapering down but still a chance of spotty rain as we go into the rest of the day. Additional rainfall totals will be anywhere from about a quarter of an inch of rain for the south bay to close to nothing in santa rosa. And then for the sierra additional snowfall totals for the next couple of days may make it up to another foot and theyve had a lot of snow over the weekend. So were still going to see some active weather here. Off and on showers, snow on some of the bay area hills. Rain tapering off tomorrow. A slight chance early on wednesday. Other than that we will head into spring with some very mild temperatures and another chance of rain by the end of the weekend. Mike, you found something to report for highway 24. Thats right. The crash we talked about all the way up there on highway 24 is in the eastbound direction. That was the first one. As we look at the map, kari this is where you showed the snow and ice potentially. Overnight the conditions might have created slippery, rainy conditions as well. Slick conditions for driving. Be careful out there. Rainy conditions everywhere. A wet, slippery commute. Over here were looking at westbound 80, the latest crash that came up to the caldecott tunnel lane. Over to the caldecott tunnel eastbound. That was the first crash we saw in the area and they do sound like theyre independent with separate details. No slowing because traffic is very light right now around the bay as we would expect. Ponding and puddling for the north bay. Watch out for parts of pittsburg, bay point and across the rio vista bridge. We had an earlier wind advisory but chp called that off and said its all right right now. We still have the slick conditions. As we have more of the cash lanes open, no backups any more at the bay bridge toll plaza. Slick conditions and a light commute. Be careful. The lapd confirming its first case of an officer coming down with coronavirus. The Department Says a Police Supervisor showed flu like symptoms on march 5th. The supervisor was sent home and tested positive for coronavirus. He is expected to make a full recovery and Officials Say no other personnel have experienced symptoms or been isolated. The mayor of the second largest city is taking new steps to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Mayor Eric Garcetti says the citys bars, restaurants and nightclubs will be closed until the end of the month. Hes encouraging patrons to order takeout or delivery during that time. Despite the executive order he says dont consider l. A. Closed for business. Our city is not shutting down. Were not planning to do so, and we never will. Entertainment venues and gyms will be shut down during that time. 4 53. Lawmakers are trying to protect Small Businesses and help them make it in the bay during the pandemic. Scott weiner and Lena Gonzalez introduced a new bill to prevent businesses in california from being evicted because they cant pay their rent since most of the places are being asked to close. The senators are asking Governor Newsom to issue an executive order to turn the bill into a law effective immediately. Census leaders worried fears over the coronavirus could put a damper on the 2020 survey. Organizers say fears over the pandemic could prevent them from hiring half a million census workers. Representatives also say fears over government misusing information collected could prevent accurate results. The census is due april 1st.
