Afterschool activities are cancelled at santa teresa high school. The School District sent parents a letter warning them a student may have been exposed to coronavirus. The student has no symptoms but will start a twoweek quarantine as the entire campus gets disinfected. It kind of scares me because theres a lot of kid heres and not enough time for people to clean. Reporter School Leaders stress that santa teresa will be open tomorrow. I think that the harm of widespread School Closure outweighs the benefits. Reporter Santa Clara Health officer dr. Sarah cody told supervisors today if schools close, that could force Many Health Care workers to stay home with their kids instead of caring for patients. She also admitted its unlikely to contain the virus now given how quickly it spreads. On average, each person with the infection will infect an average of two to three additional others. Reporter there are now 43 confirmed cases of covid19 in the county and nearly half of those were not related to travel or contact with a sick person which is one reason why the county is changing its strategy. Shifting from what we call containment which is when were focused on individual cases and tracing every single contact to mitigation which is when we take broader Public Health measures to try to slow the spread of infection. Reporter and we have just learned that there are now two additional cases of coronavirus. That brings the total here in Santa Clara County to 45. Dr. Cody said there is a promising new development for commercial labs just this week started offering coronavirus tests. Lets go to oakland, another live look at the port where the princess cruise ship is docked. As soon as passengers come off, they are met by medical personnel in these tents to be evaluated. Then they get on to these buses. Weve heard of about 300 passengers getting off the ship today, on top of 407 yesterday. 173 are from the u. S. And those needing medical attention, not necessarily from the coronavirus, but they dont feel well. They were allowed to get off first. Now, passengers who are off the ship are now starting a 14day quarantine. Earlier today sky raunger spotted some of the buses headed for Travis Air Force base in fair fae fairfield. Now, besides travis, passengers are also heading for miramar , d texas, and georgia. A small number of passengers are being quarantined at hotels in berling gate, san carlos. Those passengers went to the hospital for first for immediate medical attention but do not have the coronavirus. Jodi hernandez talked to families who just started their twoweek quarantine. But others are extremely frustrated at how long this process has taken. We went down this morning to ask for things like toilet paper, tooth paste, deodorant, and they said they had none of that. So, that is a concern if theyre bringing 800 more people there. Reporter denise got the green light to disembark late today. She too is headed to travis. But she says shes frustrated at how unorganized the operation has been. You can hear from the passengers first hand getting off that ship is prompting anxiety for everyone. Behind the scenes, California Health and Human Services are on the ship screening with medical screenings and interviews whchlt they get clear, the passengers disembark. Thats the process weve been showing you, coming off wearing masks. Theyre stopped at the bottom of the ramp. You can see the process, medical personnel in full protective gear taking their temperature first and foremost. Theyre directed into large militarystyle tents which are set up just feet away. Theres the ramp coming off. Heres military tents. Buses are waiting behind the tent. Buses leave with full police escort. Also at the port are ambulances. You can see the red secured lot there filled with ems there, passengers tested positive and their travel companions are being taken to local hospitals. This is only day two. Well likely be seeing this process through tomorrow and possibly into thursday. And we can still see passengers, hundreds of them there, from the nbc bay area sky ranger. You can see them in their rooms watching it all from their balcony. The number of cases increased by 24 in california just since yesterday. Governor newsom delivered that update today. Stanford hospitals are testing patients who have symptoms. Other hospitals will soon follow. 18 labs across the state are helping to process test kits along with the private company, quest labs. We will have the capacity on a daily basis just in quest commercial support in the state of california to process in excess of 5,000 tests on ai daily basis. As much as 5,500, but in that range. Ucsf announced today its testing in conjunction with mark zuckerberg. The group has new machines which will quadruple the number of coronavirus tests that could be run in the bay area. Only patients with symptoms will be tested. The rc of San Francisco is temporarily shutting down all schools. Classes will be cancelled in San Francisco, ma ryme, and san mateo counties this thursday through march 25th. The cancel laugss are also for any planned School Events such as fund reasonable causers, community events, as well as field trips. In San Francisco, also a plan to help Small Businesses simply stay afloat. This is a big, big problem here. Businesses across the country and of course the bay area are tanking for thousands of Business Owners. And that trickled down to the employees. Just one example, our usually busy cable cars, not many people. Very few riders that we saw today. Nbc bay areas Mark Matthews has been talking with Business Owners about what exactly they need and what city officials are considering. Among the proposals, a ban on evictions and no interest loans. But a Public Policy director for the chamber of commerce noted that the supervisors never mentioned suspended collection of city fees or taxes fees. Sidewalk fee, satisbanner ann fees. It put that to the supervisor. I didnt hear it as any of the proposals. Yeah. I think were still working on our proposals. I dont need a loan at this point. But for the shorter term, suspending the business fees would be useful and helpful. Reporter thats the owner of an optometry shop in hayes valley. If the supervisors are serious about suspending fees, theyre running out of time. Business licensing fees are due at the end of this month. Thanks mark.
