Were back, 8 37, with a topic thats very important but not always easy to discuss getting older can leave us feeling uncomfortable. But lucky for us, acclaimed journalist, author, and longtime friend of the today show, wrote a book, i love it, why did i come in this room . Joan, good morning have you seen my glasses i cant find them anywhere thats what im talking about. We get older and suddenly feel like im losing it. When youre in your 20s and you cant find something, you dont think anything about it, because youre not programmed to worry. Once youre in the 40s, 50s and you start coming out of the mall saying where did i park my car or looking for your glasses, you look all over, in your coat pocket and you realize they are on your face. Yes been there, done that. As i understand it, you decided to write this book and it sprung from an appearance on th today show a couple years back. I was doing a special series for the show on the value of friendships and companionship, which is even more important as we get older, and i had an interview with the hollywood reporter, a phone interview, to promote the series and this guy answered, i could tell he was young when he answered. But his first question was, whats it like now going back to morning tv as a Senior Citizen that was his first question. Like, wait, who is the Senior Citizen . Who are you talking about this is joan lunden. It stopped me in my tracks it started me thinking about, is that how im perceived now because of my age. And why are we so tied to age . If you have four women all 62, theyre probably incredibly different. The worst description is that the danger is that when we start thinking of ourselves as that age, sometimes we start to think that we are less capable, that we can have less things we can expect to happen in our lives. Actually telling someones age is the least de3scriptive thing you can really say about them, if you think about it. You actually say in the book to think about what age you feel. Yes and everybody has a number in their head do you have a number i guess i do. Whats your number . Like 38 i would like that. Mine is 45. Im in my 40s, 48. Its usually 10 years younger as to how your brain thinks of yourself. What do you think women are most reluctant to talk about when it comes to aging theres so many things that happen to women that dont happen to men because of declining estrogen and i mean, youre besides the hot flashes, people tend to seem to be okay talking abou hot flashes in regard to someone else having them yes but there are so many other things leaky bladders, discomfort in sex. Theres the inability to sleep, a loss of libido, expanding waistlines these things are annoying and worrisome to a woman so often we just think its happening to us. Like, whats wrong with me the next thing is to say im not as appealing, im not as desirable. And then it kind of goes down that track if we just stop letting these things be tabu and we all started talking about them because they happen to everyone. Why dont we all just talk about it theres just like lovely little nuggets. I think this will make people feel good when they read this book you have a list, its called decline to decline it embodies your attitude. We can go through them one of them i like is, get in the sunshine and fresh air. Interestingly, isolation, according to experts, is a dangerous to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Wow. So it sounds mundane and so simplistic but getting out. Take a little walk even if your back hurts or whatever, just a little bit. They say the three things that will really predict how well you age are staying engaged in life, having social connections, join clubs, get friends, so when you wake up in the morning you have somebody to talk to and to relate to and share things with. The last thing is having a sense of purpose so and you dont have to join some big club or something, just do a good deed yeah. Theres a lot of ways you can accomplish it. Put energy in your voice. Why do you say that . Some people get louder because they cant hear. But when we older, women especially they start to talk more softly. And you become meek. You become unengaged they say sing at home. You dont have to do it out in public but at home if you sing, its hard to sing to a song in a whisper so it lets you bring your voice out and that really engages you again in life. Its so important to be an active member of life. Like i said, theres a lot thats really fun in this book you get good information but its got such a nice, light, warm heart about it. I dont know if youve gotten to the last chapter but its i want to be cremated, its my last chance for a smokin hot body. Thats what im talking about. I have to tell you, i read the book, i dog eared the book, i scribbled in the book, i underlin underlined, becaus this is chockfull of wisdom just coming up with the concept, it had to come from a personal place because weve all been stuck and not able to forgive someone. I was definitely struggling with forgiveness 100 and thats why it inspired me to write this book and really, i found huge inspiration from hearing other peoples journeys and experiences with forgiveness, which is why i chose to do the book in this format and have multiple peoples experiences, stories. Some people struggling, for some forgiveness came easily and quickly and help others in their journey. Whats cool yours came from like weve all had a falling out with a friend yeah. I know that feeling, too. That friend walks into a party and you feel like your heart beating. Yes. What was the Tipping Point for you to say, you know what, i cant this isnt going to work for me. I need to take a step. It was interesting. Because, actually, when i decided to write this book, i thought i had practiced forgiveness already. So during the process of writing this book and interviewing the people about amazing experiences, i realized i needed to go back and do some more work on forgiveness to be able to run into somebody who once gave you anxiety, nervous feelings, to have that be a calm experience, it showed me forgiveness takes time but you can get there with other peoples stories. I have to say, the list of people who you interviewed in this book blew me away thank you. You interviewed a woman whose son dylan was responsible for the columbine shooting i have to say for years people have said, why havent we heard from the parents and you actually got sue to sit down with you, which i found so impressive what was the lesson that sue learned about forgiveness . I think her situation is such a unique one, one thats really heartbreaking because at the end of the day the person she struggles with forgiveness is herself for not being the mother her son needed at the time, which is devastating so i think when people read all these stories, its important to read them with compassion and kindness thats a great point. Did you find when you think you forgive but is forgiveness something you have to wake up and do on monday and then do it on tuesday and on wednesday . Its funny, because so many people when im talking about this book want the quick tips on how to practice forgiveness. As youll see in this book with so many peoples journeys, and i have 22 people in this book, youll see for some people forgiveness comes easy and its a one and done situation and for others its a daily practice i think thats such a wonderful thing to be able to know just because you decide today you want to live from a place of forgiveness, it doesnt mean that youll never have feelings of hurt or anger again you can feel those things but its all about bringing yourself back to a place of forgiveness its unique in this book because there are some who forgive and its faithbased there are some who forgive for other reasons. What did you find in that journey . It was important for me to have people with strong faith presences in their lives, an others who came to it. What i really found was the underlying message was that when youre able to practice forgiveness, that you have this amazing sense of freedom and weight lifted off of your shoulders. Theres also, you know, so many different feelings of people having feelings of betrayal of their own hurts from their past by practicing forgiveness and forgiveness is actually being looked at as a sense of power, and an empowering and inspiring experience instead of a weakness instead of weakness. People go into these journeys with their own idea what forgiveness means in their lives. Thats so interesting. What forgiveness means to you is completely different than what it means to me and thats okay. I think what people will find is that no matter who the person is theyre thinking about forgiving, theres an answer in this book for them in one of these 22 stories theres an answer. Infected passengers came off first along with any others that needed medical attention unrelated to covid19. A bus load of passengers were sent to the air force base and airport. Its not clear at this point how many people are left on board or how long it will take to clear the ship altogether. Passengers will be quarantined at various locations for two weeks.
