You see the smiles on their faces just from taking a few minutes to read a book, and they speak about how reading used to not be fun and we can make it fun. How do you feel about that book great. In the books pages, cultural, africanamerican fraternity reading books by authors. Students like you are doing the same thing across the world. It shows students of color you can see yourself in these books. You can have the fairy tale. It opens a different culture they may not have been aware of. Did yall have books you could relate to when you were growing up no, not at all. Relatable books and relatable role models. Michael, a kid said something to you the first time you participated in this program what was that . He had never seen a black man in a suit before and so to sit down with him and read, it meant a lot to him, comes from a single parent household with his mom, makes me think about when i was y life to kind of read to me and to have that kind of bond. Growing up i didnt get to see a lot of black professionals doing what were doing, so i think for us to be able to come into the classroom and show them that regardless of their background, regardless of their race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, they have an opportunity to go to college they have an opportunity to be successful. The kappa focus on kids in schools in low income areas setting an example they hope will make a difference. I do a song with them, called i can. I know i can be where i want to be. Always believe in yourself, because if you know you can, you can be anything in the world that you want to be. Always remember to read, read, read. The men sparking a love for reading that continues long after they leave the classroom. Who here wants to take a book home with you . What struck me the most is how excited they are to actually take the books home with them. I got seven books its something you dont think about. It shows you they need books. They need books. They dont have these books in their home. Yeah. So all of these books on your desk, you get to take them home . Yes. They are yours . Yes. Who gave them to you . What about these guys do you think is pretty cool they are awesome readers. I thought that reading wasnt really that cool but when they started reading, it showed me that we can read many different ways. Raise your hands if you want to read with them again. Thats everybody. Whats really cool about it, youre changing their minds about reading and that it can be cool and fun, but youre also changing their perception on life and what they can be. What does that feel like. It leaves you speechless because it comes full circle. Especially when your goal is to be that person you didnt see growing up its a oneofakind experience you cant take for granted and that you always that you always cherish forever. We had been doing hands on books program. We had the opportunity to partner with room to read, which was so awesome for us because they are such an established organization doing such great work a great opportunity to merge the two initiatives and do something great for the children. As you look at these boys and girls stuff their bags with books, what are you thinking i think its amazing. Theres a quote that says todays readers are tomorrows leaders. I think these are future leaders of america with these books they will be encouraged, confident, ready to go, spread their wings and soar like eagles. What are you doing over here . Im with kennedy. On the front lines of disasters like hurricane sandy, the shootings in el paso and the california wildfires. We have had times we have to say, i have no one in your area. I have no way to get food to you, and i felt so horrible. We put so many miles on our trucks its a challenge to make sure we get to places without having to worry. For 16 years, mama and her ladies have dished out more than 300,000 home made meals to military, rescue teams, and First Responders. We have a few Favorite Recipes that we have to make on every deployment stroganoff, chicken pot pie. Every deployment. Stro i see what our officers give. So when our soup ladies come on board, they are that committed to all the people that serve our community. These guys and gals are heroes what a great story.
