Too close to call. One reason, problems at the polls. This is what it looked like outside several locations in los angeles tonight. Not just a big night for biden. A big night for california. But its not going smoothly across the board. Good evening. Thanks for joining us on this election edition of nbc bay area news. Well be going until midnight tonight as we expect a lot more results on the local races to keep coming in. Lets begin, though, with that frustration. This video just in to our newsroom. Thousands of people are still waiting to vote. Theyve been in line for two to four hours. This is happening across l. A. County. This is from our nbc chopper down south. Its prompted the Bernie Sanders campaign to file for an emergency injunction to keep the polls open. Now, lets take a look at the results so far. This is where california stands. The night might belong overall to joe biden, but california might belong to bernie. Here are the numbers right now. Nearly 50 of the precincts reporting, and Bernie Sanders has the lead. Regardless of how california ends up, theres a good chance biden will lead the delegate count, which is what really matters. On the republican side, no surprise. President trump wins easily. He has the votes and the money to wage a powerful Reelection Campaign this fall. As we mentioned, the race now between biden and sanders still too close to call here in california. The polls have been closed three hours ago, but in some places down in los angeles, theyre still open. Many counties have a new way to vote, and thats been the big issue in l. A. Lets bring in janelle wang at the touchscreen for us. The nation is waiting on california which has the most delegates up for grabs tonight. People still in those long lines trying to cast their ballots. Now, the problem, new technology. Poll workers are now using tablets to check people in, and thats causing this major backup. This is a polling station in l. A. We sped up 30 minutes of video into 30 seconds to show you just how slowly the line is moving. Look, each person barely moving up. They were in line since about 8 00 p. M. Basically if you were in line at 8 00 p. M. , they are letting you vote, but people waiting two to four hours. As you mentioned, the Bernie Sanders Campaign Even filed a temporary restraining order to keep polls open late tonight. So as people wait for california, lets take a look at the national map. This is super tuesday. 14 states voted today. Winners announced in 12 of those states. The big story as you mentioned, the resurgence of joe biden, who has had a very poor showing since the Iowa Caucuses last month. Tonight he is the projected winner in all these purple states including texas, Just Announced in the past 30 minutes. He also picked up states like oklahoma, minnesota, virginia, north carolina. Bernie sanders picked up three states includiing colorado, uta, and his home state of vermont. Lets take a look at the numbers in texas which just came in about 30 minutes ago where they projected joe biden as the winner with 33 of the vote. Bidens win in massachusetts, one of the surprising ones. He beat out Elizabeth Warren in her home state. He also got 33 of the votes there. Biden is in l. A. Tonight celebrating his string of victories. Alabama tennessee oklahoma arkansas minnesota now, a pair of Animal Rights protesters briefly interrupted his speech. Biden brushed them off as security guards and bidens Campaign Team basically stepped in and took them off the stage. There are 1,344 delegates up for grabs tonight. Now, with bidens projected wins in nine states, he has taken the lead. Lets show you the numbers right now, the delegate count. 399 for joe biden followed by Bernie Sanders. Pete buttigieg, who is out of the race, who dropped out over the weekend, comes in third. As more delegates will be announced, well be counting those vote totals and updating that in the next half hour. We also got an update about Michael Bloomberg. It was a disappointing night for him. He only won americansamoa. A person close to the Bloomberg Campaign said he is reassessing whether to stay in the race. He has not made any announcements so far, and right now he has no Public Events scheduled for tomorrow. Well keep you posted on that. Mark matthews joins us live from oakland where volunteers have been working the phones, calling Bernie Sanders supporters. Whats the mood there right now, mark . Reporter well, a few stragglers singing karaoke, raj. I will spare you that. But suffice to say its been one of the more unusual Election Night watch parties ive ever experienced. A couple of dozen volunteers, most of them in their 20s were calling texas this afternoon. Im a volunteer with the Bernie Sanders campaign. Do you have a minute to chat . Jen, a health care instructor, spent most of her day making those calls. What were you most worried about . You know, i think the Democratic Institution has finally realized that consolidating their moderate contingency is the wise strategy, and so that seems to be happening and im concerned with what that means. Reporter there is a lot of that concern amongst these volunteers. She has been a sanders supporter since before the last election. How is he going to do . Hopefully he will do really well. Tell me what you feel. Im really nervous. Reporter a very few minutes after 7 00, their candidate was speaking from vermont and promising to fight on, but no one here at sanders headquarters was watching. They were still making phone calls. If you dont mind me asking did you vote in the morning, this afternoon . Reporter as the polls closed, a crowd of 60 or so counted down the final seconds. Three, two, one, whoo reporter then instead of showing results, they put online talking heads with no numbers followed by speeches intended to rally the troops and volunteer anita culp told me she did not want to see the results because she was afraid. I was a little bit afraid. Because . I was concerned that bernie wouldnt win. Reporter culp says if bernie does not win shes not sure shes going to vote in the general election and shes not the only person who told me that, which is part of the story were working on for our next report coming up 30 minutes from now. Mark, thank you. Our political analyst Larry Gersten is here with us. Lets put this all in perspective. Youve covered politics for decades. Weve been around you for a long time as well. Have you seen anything like this with what joe biden has done tonight . Raj, they use a lot of superlatives in politics. Never in all my years have i said anything that approaches this tsunami tonight. It was a political tsunami. It started on the east coast and kept going all the way to california. Even here, biden was thought to get perhaps 12 , 13 in this weekend. Two polls came out monday morning showing him at 19 . Boom, he hits 20 , perhaps a bit more. Between biden and bloomberg, the sanders cut will be much less than people thought. He will not be walking away with a whole bevy of delegates. A bit mo so the landscape has changed completely from where we were a couple of days ago. Moving forward now for biden and for sanders, what happens next, and how do those two men go forward, and is there a possibility that we could end up at the end with both of them vying for the same position i c competition . Weve been looking at that for a long time, and we only get closer to a contested convention as we go farther along here. Look, the next few weeks are going to be very nice for joe biden. Theyre states hes comfortable with, and he should get a huge bounce off of tonight. Theres no question about that. Bernie sanders of course has got a great ground game. Hes got lots of money. He didnt sound like he was giving up tonight. He is not about to give him. Theres no reason for him to give up. So theyre now even in delegates. Bernie sanders is a person who has been working for this job for six years. Hes not about to go away. The two you have to wonder about is Michael Bloomberg and Elizabeth Warren. My sense is that bloomberg will quit. Hell quit probably in a day or two. Warren, im not so sure because shes a bit of a true believer. She really believes in her cause. And the other reason is shes got a little thing with Bernie Sanders. Theyre not happy, and i wonder if shell stick around a lot longer just to make her case and perhaps be some sort of wedge in that convention if it is contested. These last five hours were fascinating. Stay with us. Were coming right back to you. Based on tonights results, we do have a twoman race for the democrats, apparently biden and sanders. How do the democrats reorganize and rethink this race . Next bay areas jean elle is in San Francisco at a watch party there. What are people telling you, jean . Reporter well, jessica and raj, this watch party here at mannys is wrapped up but at its peak, hundreds of democratic voters were here cheering for their candidates but also cheering for calls to unify behind a democratic nominee. I feel like im finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Do you guys agree with me . Reporter an emotional Election Night in San Francisco. Hundreds of democrats crowded into mannys to watch super tuesday results together. They dont all support the same candidate but say they are ready to unify. The fact that people who support biden and people who support bernie and warren can be in a space like this and be embracing each other and celebrating the night, i think speaks well to how the next couple of months are going to go. You have people who are never biden and you have people who what . The number two choice for literally everyone is Elizabeth Warren. What does that say . She is actually the uniting force here. Reporter as results streamed in, former congresswoman Gabby Giffords made a special appearance, telling voters she and her staff at giffords will fight to get the nominee elected and gun safety legislation passed. We must never stop fighting. Fight, fight, fight. Reporter an energizing moment for democrats who are voting for change. Certainly reminds me of what were fighting for. Reporter it was a reminder many in this room said they needed to hear as they prepare for the next phase in this process. Reporting live in San Francisco, jean elle, nbc bay area news. Jean, thank you. President trump tonight tweeting about all of this. In one of his late tweets, he called Mike Bloomberg the biggest loser of the night. His Political Consultants for a ride. 700 million washed down the drain and got nothing for it but the nickname mini mike and the complete destruction of his reputation. Lots of republicans gathered at a watch party in the east bay tonight to support bay area gop candidates vying for seats in congress and the state legislature as well. Jodi hernandez is in walnut creek for us. Jodi . Reporter raj, things have pretty much wound down here in walnut creek but just a short time ago, several dozen local republicans gathered here to watch the returns. You can see there are just a few people left out here. Local republicans have been very anxious to get a better idea of who President Trump will be running against, but insist the president will handily beat whoever gets the democratic nomination. They also came out tonight to support their local candidates vying for seats in congress and the state legislature. Republicans are very optimistic. We have a lot of local candidates were feeling very confident about, and i think that donald trump is going to win the california primary handily and give him a lot of momentum moving into the general election. Reporter again, things have wound down here but ill tell you there were several local republican candidates out here tonight, and it appears that all of those local republicans will be moving on to the general election. Reporting live in walnut creek, im jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. Thanks, jodi. Lets talk about some of the other races tonight. There was only one statewide measure tonight on the ballot. Its prop 13. It asks voters for a 15 billion bond to repair and upgrade public schools. This prop was endorsed by governor newsom. With 55 of the votes in right now, 57 opposed prop 13, the school bonds. But, again, with 43 in favor of it. Again, only half of the precincts in right now. Well keep you posted on how that develops. Another notable race for state senate, district 13, essentially the peninsula. Incumbent jerry hill is termed out. Seven candidates are vying for his spot. The top two candidates here advance to the november election, and right now regardless of party, the top two go, its republican alex glew, and josh becker right now are in the lead but a lot more votes to get to. State senate 15, the san jose area, jim bell the incumbent, also termed out. Seven candidates in this primary race and some high profile names right now. In the lead with nearly 90 of the precincts in, dave cortese. Ann ravel, and nora campos are some high name recognition politician in the south bay. We keep seeing a lot of same names moving from place to place. Lets start with jerry hill because he has been so he is so widely recognized with pg e, the fight with pg e, san bruno to take on his seat. Those are big shoes to fill. Then where is he going because we havent even heard where hes going . Good question. Hes termed out. Theres no plans for him immediately, at least this election term. We dont know. But he was definitely the david with pg e being the goliath. He has been relentless in attacking pg e for all of its ills and things that theyve done with the fires that they havent managed well, and hell be missed in terms of taking on that utility and keeping them to the fire. Okay. Thank you very much. Well, the polls closed more than three hours ago but election workers are still at it, counting thousands of ballot late into the night. Lets bring in our Senior Investigative reporter Stephen Stock at election headquarters in san mateo county, one of three local counties using a new voting system. Stephen, were seeing a lot of problems down in l. A. But really not many problems here in the bay area. Reporter thats exactly right, raj. In fact, as Technology May have been the bane of voters down in l. A. County, here in san mateo county, technology has actually been the savior because weve been able to determine that while there was a breakdown of the statewide database vote cal out of sacramento, involving 15 counties including contra costa and napa, because of technology here, they had no glitches whatsoever. They had already downloaded the system onto ipads at every vote center throughout san mateo. Now, lets look at all the ballots that are being counted right now. Tens of thousands of them. All night we watch this as boxes filled with ballots came in from 46 different vote centers around san mateo county. The supervisor here tells me that about 60 turnout, he believes, by the end of the night, which will be one of the best turnouts in a long, long time. So everything has worked smoothly here in san mateo county. Guys, back to you. Stephen, thank you. Were going to keep you there and check in later in this hour as well. We are just getting started. We have more results to get to including measure e in san jose. Thats a big deal. It would increase the transfer tax on the sale of multimillion dollar homes to help the mess. A reminder, the results are running at the bottom of our screen. Will continue to do so throughout this hourlong newscast. Breaking news on the coronavirus crisis.
