The new poll asks 500 San Francisco voters about life in the city. 64 ranked homelessness as a top issue facing San Francisco. Nearly 80 said in order to combat homelessness, the city should build more houses even if it means more congestion. While many people said they enjoy living in San Francisco, 52 think the city is getting worse overall. One of the biggest boundaries to buying a home is the daunting down payment. Some groups are getting creative. Consumer investigator chris is here with a nontraditional approach to home buying. Lets look at how tough the arithmetic is. The median price is around 1 million. With most mortgages needing 20 down. And that means when you run the math, you will need about a 200,000 down payment. And that figure right there is way out of reach for most families to swing on their own. So now some groups are offering a home buying partnership. I love the hills in the background. It is quiet. Lisa is about to sell one year in a home of her own. It is perfect for us. After years of moving and moving and moving. And trying to dodge the rent increases. And finally landing this fully remodelled three bedroom, lisa achieved the impossible. I teach second grade. She bought a house on a public schoolteachers salary. I feel like i tricked the bay area housing, absolutely. She bought with landed, a San Francisco company that covers onehalf of a teachers down payment. Alex is to foucofounder. Its a longterm investment. They called it shared equity. Teachers get money for a down payment now and then when they sell their home, he gets a cut. Any profit goes back into a more fund to help more educators in the future. Could you see it expanding to the general public some day . I think it is a tool that many people could use. As a millennial in San Francisco without a rich mom and dad how do i get started to be a homeowner . Unison is offering something similar to the public. You have to change your mindset from going alone to going in unison. If you agree to give unison a slice of your homes depreciation tomorrow, they will front your down payment today. It is like all of a sudden you have a rich uncle but only better because were Business Partners and you dont have to see us at thanksgiving. Despite some bumps over the years, home prices have continued to price. The real question to me revolves around the benefits to the consumer. He cautions that shared equity isnt necessarily for everyone. He points out that some mortgages require less than 20 down. You might have to pay more each month and possibly buy mortgage insurance, but he says, when you sell you keep every penny. If they are able to carry the monthly costs not trading away the upside, that might be the better option. They have compiled 11 questions you should ask before signing up for shared equity. How does the math change if you make big Home Improvements and what happens if you want to move . Back in san jose, lisa says she understands exactly what she signed up for. If my house appreciatoa depry also take a loss. And if my house goes up, they also get what they deserve because they have essentially invested in our house. Shes sold on shared equity and hopes other middle class families can join her. I definitely thinky deserve an opportunity. Where is all the money coming from. He said they receive funding from various places at first. Now longterm investors including Pension Funds that are willing to wait for years to see their gain and in the meantime help people like you buy their homes. Share your housing issue at nbcbayarea. Governor new sosmm will giv his vision of california. He is set to deliver his address at 10 30 in the morning on wednesday. Obviously touching on a budget issue, dealing with homelessness and much more. Dealing with the new normal. The federal government has a plan to prevent future wild fires on the west coast. This is the federal government stepping in here. It will fund 11,000 miles of strategic fuel breaks in five states. They are designed to slow a wild fires progress will be in california. Also idaho, oregon, washington, nevada and utah. Between 2009 and 2018, more than 13 million acres of land burned in those states. The reason we have such wild fires is because we dont have as muchn w need and were not getting it now. Especially in 2018. That was a big factor. Right now as far as february goes, this is one of the driest we have seen so far midway through the month and still no measurable rain fall around the area, but the weekend weather has been nice outside. High crowds looking back to San Francisco, and these are the types of clouds that should make for a nice sunset coming up. Just another hour or so, should see pink and pastel colored skies around the area. Halfmoon bay in San Francisco, the wind technically is turning back on shore, so the sea breeze is helping to drop our temperatures just slightly right now. Probably about three to five degrees in most locations. As you see around the area, winds on shore as those arrows are pointing right now, winds will change directions. They will be out of the north which will start to dry things out again and give us temperatures trending warmer by monday afternoon. For the morning, low clouds, maybe misty skies. Temperatures in the 40s to start the day. Tomorrow we will see a few 70s showing up south of san jose, santa rosa as well. Antioch and concord tomorrow near 70 degrees. Shortterm, not a lot of high clouds. Storms here to the west. Its going to make a turn for the Pacific Northwest once again. The story of the last five weeks around here. The low clouds on the coach, patchy fogs inland, but no rain in the forecast for your monday. Instead, well see a change in the wind direction from the onshore breezes right now. By midday tomorrow, the wind direction turning offshore. The areas of red may briefly see gusts 20 to 30 miles an hour. For most of the bay area, it will not be that bad. But the hill tops probably until about Tuesday Morning will trend more breezy. Now, as High Pressure continues to keep the stoookirm at much. The weak system misses us into southern california. Our best chance for showers will be, it looks like, next weekend. Notice how the system is dropping in out of the north. So were not expecting much in the way of total rain fall. Again, here is all the rain we have missed out on this month. San francisco and most of the bay area on pace to have one of the drier februarys if we cant get more of a tenth of an inch of rain, doesnt look like much. All the way through the 26th maybe just under a tenth of an inch of rain. A leap year gives us an extra day this month, but i dont know if we will be able to make up what we lost so far. In some cases in the north bay really missed out on three inches of rain. You see there some 70s for the next couple of days. And then saturday and sunday, lets hope thats more than a few showers because right now that is the one and only chance for rain. For the north bay, you will be missing out on five to six inches of rain. We talked about fire season. That could start ramping up a bit sooner than average if these rain chances dont improve. The thing about the north bay is they really need to own rain because they get their water from their own reservoirs. Still ahead, terrifying video of school bus skrashs. Kids still inside.
