citizen to pass away from the disease. as more americans return from china to be placed under quarantine back at home. all that and kobe crash. new information about the final moments of kobe's doomed flight and whether the engines were working before the chopper went down. welcome to miami. princehairy and mig00 markle making their first appearance in public since stepping away from their royal duties. and hollywood's heavyweights. the red carpets is steamed, the statues shined and now the stars are ready for sunday night's academy awards. we'll have everything you need to know about the nominees and the favorites. today february, 8, 2020. >> announcer: from nbc news this is "today" with peter alexander, kristen welker and dylan dreyer, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today." thanks for joining us on this saturday morning. kristen already has her own red carpet rolled out in advance of tomorrow's academy awards. we're going to get to that and start with washington right now. let's get to that top story, presidential pay back to top administration officials, key witnesses in the house impeachment inquiry forced out of their jobs in what some are describing as a friday night massacre. we have it covered today from all angles. we will also speak to the democratic presidential candidate senator elizabeth warren about it. but let's begin with nbc's kelly o'donnell at the white house. >> reporter: the white house is not explaining why this happened or whether any other expulsions are still to come. allies say the president has the right to have the staff of his choice while democrats say this is swift retribution. the military officer who has been removed from his position here will remain on active duty returning to the army while a prominent ambassador who also testified is coming back and is not being reassigned leaving it trump administration in a hurry. after impeachment comes the purge. witnesses paying the price. >> everyone was in the loop. it was no secret. >> reporter: ambassador gordon sondland had testified about his conversations with the president and that he believed military aid to ukraine was tied to a biden investigation. late friday sondland lost his post. the president intends to recall me effective immediately as the ambassador to the european union. he said he's grateful to president trump even after the president's defense team heaped blame on him. >> the democrats quid pro quo theory is based on initial speculation of one person, ambassador sondland. that speculation is wrong. >> reporter: friday's purge began with a decorated iraq war veteran who was critical of the president under oath. >> i was concerned by the call. what i heard was inappropriate. >> reporter: lieutenant colonel alex vindman served as a ukraine expert on the national security council and was among those listening to the trump-zelensky phone call. vindman's lawyer wrote the most powerful man in the world has decided to exact revenge. the president who made firing part of the trump brand had only hinted that vindman was vul vulnerable. >> well, i'm not happy with him. >> reporter: but the purge went beyond vindman to include his brother who also worked at the nse but was not a witness. reveling in his acquittal thursday the president brought them up unprompted. >> but lieutenant colonel vindman and his twin brother, right? >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi said she was stunned. >> it goes too far. >> reporter: during his testimony vindman tried to reassure his soviet born father fearful that testifying could be risky. >> do not worry i will be fine for telling the truth. >> reporter: and in a separate development this morning aides to former national security advisor john bolton are saying they fear the white house is trying to suppress him from telling his story in an upcoming book. aides write they have concerns about the required review process for that manuscript in an attempt to suppress the book they say instead of a legitimate search for material. >> kelly o'donnell capping a busy week at the white house. thank you. >> we want to bring in jeremy bash now. he's an nbc news national security analyst who served as chief of staff at the department of defense and cia under president obama. jeremy, good morning. thanks for being here on a busy morning. let's start with the crux of this. the fact is the president has the right to hire or fire whomever he wants. so what are the potential ramifications of these ousters and what could the ramifications be for national security, jeremy? >> yeah, kristen. the president does have legal authority to remove people from his staff, but think of the implications. first of all, this is a career professional, an iraq war vet, someone wounded in combat, and he's an expert. so the president is going to be losing expertise, losing those career professionals we want advising our presidents and national leaders about national security issues. and i think it sends a chilling message to others not to speak up, not to tell the truth. >> america has a long tradition as you know well of speaking truth to power. so how do we as a country hold our leaders to account if they are afraid to speak out? >> well, that's exactly the point, peter, which is that our career professionals are trained to see something, say something. i think the message that the president is sending here is if you see something, say nothing, stay silent. and that's going to have ramifications because if we have our national security and our intelligence leaders silenced by the president because they fear his retribution of their professional career, we're not going to have good advice flowing up to the president. we're going to be in effect defenseless and blind. >> and of course a lot of people are bracing for the possibility of more departures. thank you so much for your insights this morning. >> we want to turn now to the democrats who will be out in force in new hampshire this weekend ahead of tuesday's critical first in the nation primary. they took to the debate stage last night where candidates traded shots with a lot of focus on bernie sanders and pete buttigieg. we begin with nbc's dasha burns in new hampshire this morning. dasha, good morning. >> reporter: hey, peter and kristen, good morning. divisions on the debate stage. the candidates battling it out on the future of the party. the two front runners presenting two different visions, progressive versus moderate, newcomer versus experience. this all coming with a chaotic kick off to the primary season. high stakes in new hampshire. bernie sanders and pete buttigieg neck and neck out of iowa going head to head at friday's debate. >> a politics that says it's my way or the highway. >> are you talking about senator sanders? >> yes. >> i don't have 40 billionaires, pete, contributing to my campaign. >> reporter: buttigieg the primary target on the stage. >> we have a newcomer in the white house and look where it got us. >> senator warren, is that a substantial answer? >> no. >> pete, fundamentally you are missing -- >> we need people with experience. that's why i'm worried about mayor pete. >> reporter: after a disappointing showing in iowa joe biden battling to get back in the race calling out president trump for firing lieutenant colonel vindman. >> i think we should all stand and give colonel vindman a show of how much we supported him. stand up and clap for vindman. get up there. who we are. that's who we are. we are not what trump is. >> reporter: amy klobuchar finding the spotlight. >> if you are tired of the extremes in our politics and the noise and the nonsense, you have a home with me. >> reporter: meanwhile elizabeth warren disappointed with her debate performance. >> i just didn't say enough, didn't fight hard enough. >> reporter: this after the latest nbc marrist poll. warren, biden and klobuchar trailing. it all comes on the heels of the iowa debacle, three days before the results were released showing buttigieg and sanders virtually tied. but inconsistencies of reporting calling the outcome into question. >> the reality of this is we may never know with 100% clarity who won the iowa caucuses. >> reporter: lending all the more gravity to the granite state's primary. >> and now it comes to new hampshire, a state that thinks for itself, is not going to be told what to do by anyone. >> reporter: and one candidate noticeably absent from the debate stage, former new york mayor michael bloomberg. he has not been campaigning here in new hampshire, but he is touting a big endorsement from president trump's former navy secretary richard spencer. peter, kristen? >> dausha burns in new hampshir this morning. thank you. >> we are joined now exclusively by senator elizabeth warren. thank you so much for waking up early with us. we know you had a late night. we appreciate it. >> glad to be here. >> we're going to get to the campaign in just a minute, but we do want to starts with those developments overnight at the white house. a number of your republican senate colleagues did acknowledge they believe what president trump did as it relates to ukraine was inappropriate. some of them even said they think he's learned a lesson. given those ousters overnight, do you think president trump has learned a lesson, senator? >> yes, i think the lesson he has learned is he can do anything he wants. that he is above the law and that nearly all of the republican senators will lock arm and protect him. that's corruption. he is treating this government as if it is only loyal to him, his own private play thing instead of a government that is supposed to work for the people. this is a problem. and this means that in this upcoming election in 2020, this is going to be one of the biggest contrasts we draw between the most corrupt administration in history that we're going to be out there fighting for the people. and wow do we need it. >> if you become commander in chief don't you want the right to fire and hire whoever you want? >> of course you have the right to hire and fire, but come on no one is fooled. he didn't just say here's someone who isn't doing his job well. this is about retribution. this is about pay back. there's no one in this country fooled by that. in fact, donald trump himself probably wouldn't even try to hide it. that's not the kind of government we want because that's a government then that says everyone's pledged loyalty to the person who sits in the white house. that's not what the constitution says. the constitution says no one is above the law not even the president. and that we are a nation that is committed to rule of law. when someone comes forward and offers the truth, then they should not be fired for it. >> senator, let me ask you about the debate if i can very quickly. at the end of the night you seemed to indicate some frustration you didn't get your message out. are you concerned you are not reaching voters at this crucial time? >> oh, no. i was asked about what i would have liked to have said that i didn't get to say, and really it's about how i've spent my whole life. you know, i wasn't in politics until pretty recently. and i spent my life studying why families go broke. and what i love running for president is i get to talk not just about how the middle class has been hollowed out and working families have been crushed and students are getting run over by the student loan debt and the poor are being left behind, i get to talk about how we can fix it. there are so many things we can do. that's why i have so many plans -- things we can do to make this country work not just for a handful at the top but for everyone. >> the latest poll shows right now in your own state of new hampshire your trailing in third place after a third place finish in the iowa caucus. if you end up third in the state what is your path to the nomination? >> so, look, i am delighted to be out here to have a chance to talk about what we can do to build a stronger america. first thing we need to do, though, is to win. and to do that we're going to have to bring our party together. we can't go into the 2020 election like we did in 2016 with different parts of our party warring with each other. we need to run on the kind of core issues that americans care about. making government work for everyone. you know, i have a proposal for a 2 cent wealth tax that says those at the top should pay a little more so we could have universal child care and invest in our public schools. those are the kinds of things we can bring americans together on. we can get republicans and independents in as well. >> senator peter and i have been out on the campaign trail and talking to democratic voters. some of them say look at what happened in iowa, look at how president trump has been emboldened in the wake of being acquitted. they are concerned right now the democratic party does not have what it takes to take on president trump. what do you say to them? >> you know, think of it this way. three years now we've had mitch mcconnell and donald trump running things. it was exactly three years ago yesterday that mitch mcconnell tried to throw me off the floor of the united states senate for reading a letter from coretta scott king. now, that's when he uttered the words that a lot of women have put on t-shirts or embroidered on pillows or had tattooed on their bodies. nevertheless, she persisted. today a lot of folks are were aid that donald trump may be -- the fight against him may be unwinnable. i've spent my whole life winning unwinnable fights to hold corpora corporate executives accountable. we got the ceo of wells fargo fired. the way i see it is a lot of people are going to say unwinnable right up until we get in the fight, we persist and we win. >> senator elizabeth warren, thank you so much for joining us. i'll be out there in new hampshire. look forward to seeing you. really appreciate it. >> good. >> we'll see you soon now we move onto some other breaking news overnight where officials have announced the first american death from the coronavirus in wuhan, china. this is more evacuees from china arrive in the u.s. where they'll be placed on quarantine. several cruise ship passengers are now under observation. erin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. officials here say they're optimistic for the chinese nationals being tested at this hospital. they don't think they have the coronavirus. meanwhile hundreds of americans from nebraska to tokyo have been quarantined as scientists race to figure out this mysterious virus. overnight, news the first american has died from the mysterious coronavirus. the u.s. embassy confirming to nbc news a 60-year-old who had contracted the virus in wuhan died thursday. and this morning growing fears the virus may be spreading here at home. according to the cdc at travis air force base near san francisco, five evacuees rescued from the epicenter earlier this week have been rushed to local hospitals after showing symptoms. >> we're being very aggressive, using quarantine measures that hadn't been used in 50 years. >> reporter: friday three more planes full of evacuees from wuhan landed at military bases. across the country hundreds of americans remain in quarantine. he arrived wednesday still in good spirits despite being stuck for two weeks at a military base in san diego. >> the weather is great better where i came from so i can't complain. >> reporter: he says he's showing no symptoms, but officials are taking no chances. there's much we still don't know about the virus. >> that includes exactly how it spreads, how deadly it is, whether it's commonly transmitted by patients who are not yet displaying symptoms and other issues. >> reporter: questions causing trouble at sea. south of tokyo a dream holiday turned nightmare. board the diamond princess more than 60 confirmed cases, in total more than 3,7en passengers and crew either quarantined on the ship or hospitalized. another cruise liner quarantined off the coast of hong kong. and in newark, new jersey, four passengers trmted off a cruise on four stretchers even though they showed no symptoms of the virus. one of the patients tested positive for the flu. nevertheless in this hospital in isolation those test results expected today. peter, kristen? >> it's a story a lot of people are watching closely. >> time now for a check of the
