ensuring clean energy across the country. how are we going to pull this country together? we take on the biggest challenge in history, we save the world and do it together. right now at 6:30, democrats up first, making their case in the impeachment trial of president trump. this is a live look now. day one of the opening arguments is winding down in washington, d.c. day one is expected to end in the next few minutes. democrats will then have two more days to present their case. and at this point, the president's legal team will have its turn. >> our janelle wang has been watching the drama unfold all day. she joins us now with the highlights of what she's seen. >> today much different than yesterday where there was a lot of bickering, back and forth, trying to establish the rules of this trial. but today democratic prosecutors were in the driver's seat with no interruptions as they laid out their case. at 10:00 a.m. our time this morning -- >> will you please be seated. >> reporter: democrats began their opening arguments, laying out their entire case against president trump from start to finish. >> the constitution demands the removal of donald trump from his office as president of the united states. >> reporter: house democrats have 24 hours over three days to convince moderate republicans to ultimately vote with them to remove president trump for tw charges, obstruction of congress and abuse of power, by urging ukraine to announce investigations into his political rivals. the president has repeatedly said his july 25th phone call with ukraine's leader was perfect. >> in a perfect call, the president would not solicit foreign interference in the 2020 elections. >> reporter: democrats used video testimony to prove their case. >> rudy giuliani was a hand grenade that was going to blow everyone up. >> reporter: and quotes from the house investigation to back up their information. senators silent jurors inside the chamber but still politicians outside the door. republicans defending president trump. >> they're on a crusade to destroy this man. >> reporter: the president cast doubt on whether he would let members of his administration testify while saying he would like to be there himself. >> i would like to sit right in the front row and stare in their corrupt faces. >> reporter: while democrats promise to continue to fight for new evidence. >> there will be continued pressure on many republican members to ask for witnesses and documents. >> reporter: with the real battle now under way, democrats looking beyond the senators, hoping to make their case directly to the american public. okay. after opening arguments from both sides, another vote on whether to allow witnesses. president trump is suggesting he may invoke executive privilege to block former white house staffers from taking the stand, saying it's an issue of national security. raj and jca? t in larry gerston. janelle was mentioning yesterday the nuts and bolts rules. today the meat. what is the strategy by the democrats? and is it working? because it's still going on as we speak. >> we won't know if it's working for a week, two, three. it depends what the water cooler discussions are like. it's to lay out the case. three days. lay out the case today. the next day, the first article. the next day after, that article two. but today step by step by step, putting things together, connecting the dots, whatever terminology you want to use. it's all about showing people what this case is about. and remember one thing. we know a lot about this we live this day in and day out. most of the people in the public lives, they don't know. this is their first exposure. and now they have a national stage, television everywhere. a platform to make their case. a big audience. >> adam schiff is still talking right now. using a lot of media, using clips from the hearings, using some of president trump's own sound bites or own messaging to the media to lay out their case piece by piece. is that going to be effective? and like you say, is that going to really move the need well the republicans in the senate at all? or is this really for the american people? >> oh, believe me, their audience is the american people. they know what the vote is. they can count. there is no way there is going to be a conviction absent something unbelievable happening. but yeah, they have used the media, i should say, extraordinarily well, the clips, the quote, things like that. you don't need to call any witnesses. they had witnesses all day long. how many times did we see president trump yesterday saying according to article 2, i'm the president, i can do anything i want. i saw it three times at least. and today they did the same kind of thing. what you're doing is bringing in credible witnesses. these people were diplomats. they were state department employees. they were civil servants, to try the make their case. and you saw schiff almost goading the republicans when he said periodically, gee, i'd sure like to see that memo, wouldn't you? you can. just subpoena it. go tell him you want it. and one other thing about bolton and all these other guys. let's get this straight. if they want to talk, they can talk. nobody can keep them from talking. all he has to do is call a news conference, national security, whatever. they can do it if they want to. it becomes a convenient escape, though. >> last night you were watching close to 11:00 it finally ended. 11 amendments by the democrats, knowing pretty certainly that mitch mcconnell and the republicans wouldn't pass any of those amendments. why go down that road? >> every time, every time one was introduced, it gave the democrats the chance to remind people what this was all about. the issue could be different. it could be witnesses. it could be papers. it could be some sort of document. whatever it was, we don't have this, we don't have that, we need this. we should have that. if we're going to have a fair trial, this is what you should have. you know, if you're republicans sitting in the senate, you've got to be going crazy right now because they know they have this coming for another two days, and all this is to set the case. they'll have their opportunity. but meanwhile, the democrats get to strike first. today was the first opportunity for them to lay it out. >> and larry, in terms of the viewership of people watching the hearing, how does that compare in terms of the clinton impeachment? >> i don't know. i really don't know. times are different. one thing. people are not locked in x time to y time. they can go online and see whatever bits they want 24/7. in a sense, it's like comparing apples and oranges. but one thing's for sure. whether this all takes root, and i mean democrats and republicans, we won't know for a couple of three weeks. it has to sink in. but you sure saw all the bloodletting begin today. >> don't go anywhere. we're going need you in about 25 minutes. >> adam schiff is still speaking. okay. tracking every minute of the impeachment trial for you. like raj just referenced, we're going have a special edition of nbc bay area news
