A tree split that house in two. The elderly man living inside able to get outside just in the nick of time. This morning, millions of americans are reeling from mother natures wrath. Something i never want to experience again. It was scary. It was really scary. Reporter after tornadoes tore through at least four different Southern States, flash flooding forced rescues in mississippi and claimed a life in oklahoma. Crews have been working around the clock to bring back power to thousands. The storm, part of a powerful system that raced across the country, so far 11 people have died. Three in alabama, texas and louisiana, and one in oklahoma and iowa. That includes jerry and mary sue franks, a louisiana couple killed when a tornado lifted up their mobile home and tossed it the length of two football fields. First of all, before we get to those, we have some pretty good showers and thunderstorms from texas all the way to the Midatlantic States. Some areas could see 1 to 3 inches. Locally, maybe even more. Then, what were keeping an eye on, these first two storms. Today and tomorrow, heavy rain and storms for the southeast. Light snow for the great lakes and northern new england. Storm number two, continues wednesday and thursday. Not a lot going on with this. Showers and storms and snow for the great lakes. Gusty winds. Were worried about the storm number three. Its a coasttocoaster, coming across from the midwest, to the northwest. By friday and saturday, snow and storms from friday into the plains and the midwest. Heavy snow and ice, midwest into the northeast, the way its look right now. Friday to saturday. Severe storms in the mid plains and rain in the southeast. Were going to continue to track this. Right now, this one has the potential for having big problems by the end of the week. Savannah . There were 30 soldiers in this building sleeping here. They managed to get out before the Ballistic Missile impacted. But the entire place was incinerated. Iranian Officials Say they launched a symbolic attack. They didnt mean to kill any american personnel. But when youre here, it doesnt look that way. The iranian Ballistic Missiles fired at this base in western iraq were powerful enough to blast deep craters and tear through buildings. A mess hall destroyed. Living quarters for u. S. Troops, blown to bits. American forces werent inside. Advanced Warning Systems gave them time to take cover. But the u. S. Military insists iran didnt try to Miss American forces. The soldiers just took precautions and survived it. These attacks on u. S. Troops were popular in iran, portrayed as a symbol of iranian strength. But the accidental shooting down of the ukrainian passenger plane, killing foreigners and many iranians, and then lying about it, is a different story. It has sparked outrage and violence. A third day of protests in tehran and other cities. At least one protester activist said, shot in the leg, risking their freedom and their lives. The demonstrates are undeterred, even by riot police. They are denouncing the Supreme Leader and the oftenfeared revolutionary guard. Going so far as to symbolically refuse to walk over u. S. And israeli flags. The symbol of irans sworn enemy. President trump tweeting overnight, dont kill your protesters. On sunday, he tweeted in english and farsi a warning to iranian leaders that the u. S. Is watching. Over the weekend, Administration Officials blanketed the airwaves to say President Trump had good reason to kill irans top general. Defense secretary mark esper couldnt confirm the president s claim that they did it because general Qassem Soleimani was about to attack four u. S. Embassies. I didnt see one, with regard to four embassies. The president said he believed it probably and could have been attacks against additional embassies. Reporter now, savannah, bases in iraq frequently get attacked by rockets. But generally, theyre very small. Last night, there were about four rockets that landed on a different base in this country. No americans were there at the time. But four iraqis were injured. But this was a significant and different scale. This was a series of Ballistic Missiles, big missiles fired from iran. Im going to see if we can go inside. Im going to show you how badly this was incinerated. The beds, the bed frames that people had been using are pretty much gone. If we go a little further and hopefully not fall over anything, i can take you in the main part of what had been a living facility. And you can see, these were containerized housing. You come a little bit further. These were containers that had beds, air conditioning units, where people were living at the time. And one was knocked out. And then the next, and then the next. All of them completely destroyed by the blast wave and incinerated in the fire. So, soldiers here say, if they had been here, they would have been killed. But they had advanced notice. They had about two hours advanced notice. They were able to take shelter in bunkers and ride it out. Remarkable to see the place where the iranian missiles hit last week. Thank you, richard. That President Trump gave the authorization to kill soleimani about seven months ago. If you remember, theres been a lot of tension between the United States and iran, going back for months. Iran shot down an american drone, that iran says was entering into iranian air space. The u. S. Insists it was not. Around that time, the administration decided to take more aggressive options, including the option of targeting soleimani, only on the condition if american troops were killed. President trump always wanted to reserve the right that he would pull the trigger. We know now, he did pull the trigger. I cant help but think how Different Things would have been. You take one more look here. If there had been dozens of american troops living here, and they hadnt got the notice they did, there had been a mass casualty event on this base, i think we would be in a very, very different situation right now than we are. I dont think we would be on what seems to be a period of increasing tension but not war footing. It wasnt necessarily guaranteed to have turned out that way. No question about it. It is expected to be a key week in the impeachment battle. Almost a month after the house voted to impeach President Trump, the process seems finally ready to move to the senate and a trial. Nbc White House Correspondent, Kristen Welker, has the latest. Kristen, good morning. Reporter good morning to you. President trump is bracing himself as House Speaker nancy pelosi prepares to send the articles of impeachment this week to the senate. The president is turning up the heat on Senate Republicans to move quickly, as pelosi fires back, warning of a coverup. All of it raising the question, will there even be a full senate trial . The back and forth over impeachment now reaching a fever pitch, with President Trump signaling he supports the idea that the senate dismiss the articles of impreachmeeachment the trial would even begin. It comes after Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell signed on to a resolution to outright dismiss the case without a trial if pelosi doesnt turn over the articles within 25 days. Mr. Trump now saying the trial gives the partisan democrat witch hunt credibility that it otherwise does not have. I agree. Dismissing is a coverup. Dismissing is a coverup. Reporter pelosi is moving to end a standoff with mcconnell and is expected to turn over the articles this week. Among the reasons for the delay, pelosi wanted to pressure republicans into having key trump aids, like john bolton, to appear as witnesses, and to allow for any new evidence against the president to be presented. It is about a fair trial. This president is impeached for life, regardless of any gamesmanship on the part of Mitch Mcconnell. Reporter the president seemed to agree with pelosi on that point. Tweeting, why should i have the stigma of impeachment attached to my name when i did nothing wrong . What happens next . In the impeachment time liline,e house is expected to vote this week on a team of lawmakers to serve as impeachment managers. They will prosecute the case against the president in the senate. Pelosi will transmit the two articles to the senate, charging the president with abuse of power and obstruction of congress. Following that, chief Justice John Roberts will be sworn in to preside over the senate trial. And he will swear in the all 100 senators, who will take an oath to do impartial justice. Senators will then debate guidelines, including whether to call witnesses before the trial gets under way. Republicans divided over how quickly they would like to wrap it up. We should be completely open to calling witnesses. The senate should end this trial as quickly as possible. Thats what i intend to do. He will be acquitted. Meanwhile, kristen, the senate trial will be happening. Very busy time for democrats on the trial. Number of the senators will have to take a break from campaigning to serve as jurors. But it will be a busy time for President Trump, as well, right . Reporter it sure is, craig. And in some ways, this is the perfect political storm. The senate trial could officially begin this week, but it likely wont start in earnest until next week. And think about whats on the horizon. As you say, craig, voters in iowa will have their say in about three weeks. One day after the iowa caucus, the president delivers his state of the union address, all as senators consider whether to remove the president from office. What was it like to be a cia wife he would take threemonth stints, then come home for two weeks. No contact for a while and then, we would skype, so he could see rayna. Reporter rayna is their daughter, born in 2007 tell me what kind of father he is he sounds like he was doting on this little girl he was very involved. Reporter rachel and rayna moved to jordan where darren was stationed. They lived an idyllic life they planned to spend the holidays with darrens family. He had to complete one more mission. His trip was supposed to be a few days long and received a phone call from him the day before he said, everything has been kind of canceled im coming home. Reporter it was the last time they spoke. Deadly suicide bombing at a u. S. Run military base in afghanistan. Reporter the cia had been working to recruit a wellplaced militant to help them track down senior al qaeda leaders. But the militant was a doubleagent at the scheduled meeting, he became a suicide bomber, killing darren and six other cia officers and contractors the deadliest attack on the cia in decades rachel got the news by phone, while on vacation with darrens family i fell to my knees and started crying i couldnt breathe i thought, this is not for real. You cant possibly this is a mistake. Are you sure hes not injured . No reporter labonte had been among those to raise concerns about the mission. When you found out what happened, much went wrong that day. How do you think of it now hindsight is 20 20. But now, hes gone has that been hard for you at times, yes yes, it has. But i think to myself, that i know that he was a hero. So, i try and strive to be better, as well. Reporter a few times a year, they go to Arlington National cemetery, where darren lies among giants, each with their names etched in white marble i have to believe that god needed darren up there in heaven, to protect the gates of heaven why else would you take someone so young and all these other people so young, from their families these are the stories that we so rarely get to hear because of the kind of work they do and it being ten years, this was such a shocking attack a lot of us remember when that happened and this is one of the individuals that gave everything for our country. He feels very present when you talk to them hes very much alive in their hearts often, we do stories about fallen heros when you sit ten years later and listen to the wife and child, it hits you just how painful it is for so many and the cia Memorial Fund has been so wonderful to them.
