Both bases are home to u. S. Troops. Here are the two air bases that were targeted. Now, there are new reports within the last ten minutes that a third base was hit. We are waiting for confirmation. The missiles have been classified as short range. The pentagon says it is clear that they came from iran. If you hertd Richard Engel from nbc news five minutes ago iran has confirmed they have launched the missiles right across the border about 200 miles into iraq. Yeah, iran saying it is being called, this operation, martyr soleimani. The general was killed in baghdad in a drone strike. President trump ordered that drone strike because of his attacks against u. S. Personnel in iraq as well as, quote, immint threats against u. S. Personnel and u. S. Military in iraq. The last few days iran has threatened retaliation and it seems they have followed through with that. Lets bring in nbcs alice barr. Shes live in washington with the very latest. Alice. Reporter good evening, janelle and raj. The main question we all have right now, we are waiting to hear if any americans have been hurt or killed in these attacks. The department of defense saying that they have taken all possible steps to safeguard personnel around the world and that these bases were already on high alert for the threat of retaliation. Two Iraqi Military bases that house american troops under attack tonight. The u. S. Defense department now confirming that iran launched more than a dozen Ballistic Missiles at the bases. So the fact theyve gone with a direct fire attack on a u. S. Military base from iran is truly a game changer. Reporter the white house saying President Trump is monitoring the situation closely. Earlier today, the Trump Administration was out in force defending its decision to kill top iranian general qassem soleimani. Hes a monster and hes no longer a monday sster, hes dea. United states is not looking to start a war with iran, but we are looking to finish one. Reporter in iran, soleimanis massive funeral procession turning into a stampede and iraq is moving to push out u. S. Forces though President Trump says he wont give isis a foothold to stage a comeback. We are not safer now. We are definitely in greater danger. Reporter Top Administration officials insisting the u. S. Took out soleimani to stop attacks they say were a matter of days away. The right decision. We got it right. Reporter the u. S. National security advisor saying thats based on . Strong evidence and strong intelligence. Reporter though he would not say whether soleimanis killing erased the imminent threat, democrats want proof, pushing for that intelligence to be declassified as top congressional leaders get a briefing that some say is long overdue. And as democrats aim to limit President Trumps military actions with the war powers resolution. Iran is already saying that it will strike again if the u. S. Retaliates for these attacks this evening. President trump, of course, has said that if there was any kind of military action against u. S. Forces, that the u. S. Would strike again, so at this point were in a situation where someone is going to have to back down to prevent the situation from just continuing to escalate. Janelle, back to you. Okay, thanks so much, alice. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is responding. She just tweeted this 30 minutes ago saying, quote, closely monitoring the situation following bombings, targeting u. S. Troops in iraq. We must ensure the safety of our Service Members including ending needless provocations from the administration and demanding that iran cease its violence. America and world cannot afford war. Lets bring in our political analyst larry gersten. This was a concern for a lot of people for candidate trump, was he going to be able to respond in this crisis. Are we at war right now . At what point do we determine this . Pretty close. All we need is the u. S. To respond in like fashion and you can call that war. When one nation is attacking another or its provinces, so to speak because iran would be that technical sense, part of our network, yeah, thats oura tatsumaing the United States responds in like mooner. The president said he would do more than like manner. So, yes, weve got real issues here. What people dont remember, perhaps, is that not only are these 5,000 u. S. Troops in iraq at issue here, weve got 80,000 troops spread out throughout the middle east. We have 300 embassies and consulates around the world. We cant be everywhere no matter how good our military is. So, yes, the u. S. Will respond and then we have to wait and see what happens after that. Okay. So President Trump made the initial attack. He made that order to kill the top general last week. What do you think is happening now . Is he going to consult congress for this next move or possible next move . One would hope. Now, of course, we heard about the gang of 8 meeting today. We dont know what the gang of 8 learned, but we expect there is something they got. How much is a question. If they feel really satisfied the president had good reason for killing general soleimani, thats one thing. If they feel, you know, you gave us a lot of generalities, but no real meat to deal with, thats another problem. So until we have some indication of that, we dont know where the president will go. He needs to, according to protocol, he needs to consult. The only only the United States congress can literally say and declare, were going to war. Only. Weve had all kinds of issues in the past, but not a war like this in a long time. When we went into iraq, remember, the United States congress authorized the president to do this. Yes, there has to be some kind of authorization. Assuming the president is going to go by general rules, which we know the president often does not do. You brought up iraq. Is this the most perilous weve been in u. S. Troops since 2003 . Almost 20 years . It is the most perilous weve been. Thats because right now we have an enemy, not just within iraq. That was our problem when we got there. But from outside of iraq. We also dont know how this is going to impact the rest of the arab world. We dont know what stand nations are going to take. Remember, the Biggest Country at stake right now, believe it or not, is not iran, its iraq. Why . Because theyre on both ends of this deal. Theyre getting from iran, getting it from the United States which is why theyre saying, we want the United States out. They dont like iran at all. But what they dislike even more is the nakt that they become the pingpong ball for each side. And this takes us back to the 1908, the iran iraq war. We had a war between the two countries almost nine years, the entire decade. Ironically, the United States during that period supported iraq. Of course, things changed after that. Then we went in to get saddam hussein. The United States has been all over. Remember, we helped get the shah of iran in 1953. Theres a lot of anger in the middle east toward the United States. We dont like to think about that. We view ourselves differently. But let me tell you something, there are plenty of people in the middle east who right now are saying its about time they got theirs. Tension for decades. Before the attack, House Speaker said she wanted to pass a resolution to limit the president s war powers. Do you think thats still and she just tweeted she does not want to go to war. She does not want america to go to war. What do you think is going to happen with that resolution . Two things at stake here. One, how congress in general feels, and secondly, Mitch Mcconnell. Mitch mcconnell is key on that. The democrats have the vote in the house. But if Mitch Mcconnell stays with the president , that resolution will never get out of the senate. So thats what we have to watch as we go downstream. But remember impeachment, whats impeachment, right . That is so now on the back waters its not funny. The question people are asking is, how intentional was this or was it really necessary . I think were going to be talking with you for several more hours here if this continues to evolve. Thank you, larry. This is certainly frightening for americans here at home and also military families, for the troops in the middle east and their families here in the u. S. Nbc bay areas damian true hi trujillo sat down with a mom with more on that. Damian. Reporter whats sure to add anguish, in beten tears today, she told me about her daughter carla, that feisty little girl who joined the u. S. Air force and is now in the worlds most dangerous zone. She worries every day hoping and praying. She carries her daughters image everywhere. Carla sanchez, an air man half a world away in an area that could come under attack at any moment. Her mom Carmen Sanchez speaks broken english, but sometimes language becomes irrelevant when demonstrating anguish. Here carmen calls her daughter her idol. Carla joined the air force soon after high school in hollister. She wanted to serve her country. The air man has been in the middle east for six months and in the last week these images are haunting her mother. Threats of war and more troops moving in in case the unthinkable happens. The constant fear, she says, of that knock on the door. Extremely proud of our soldiers. Reporter the family has received an outpouring of suppo support from their hollister neighbors including the veterans of foreign wars. I want to pray for you. Reporter carmen, an immigrant from mexico, knows her daughter signed up for this. She knows her adopted country needs brave men and women like carla to serve. And although her worry has ratcheted up in the last week, carmen is proud of her little girl who chose to wear the sacred cloth of this nation. We should mention that carmen works the swing shift and she does not check her phone when she is at work. So chances are she has no idea what is going on right now in iraq. Were live in san jose. Im damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. Damian, thank you. We continue to follow this break egg news overseas. The impact in iran, iraq and here in the u. S. Were going to bring you more updates after this. Stay with us. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Im tracking some showers off to the north. Well have the full time line in about 9 minutes. We continue to follow the breaking news in the middle east. About two hours ago, iran attacked at least two iraqi bases housing u. S. Troops. This is video from the attack from Iranian State tv. This is now almost 5 00 a. M. In iraq. Were waiting on word if there are any casualties in this. The Iranian Revolutionary guard fired more than a dozen missiles at those air bases in iraq. Now, here are the two air bases that were targeted. You can see the map here. The missiles have been classified as short range. The pentagon says car they came from iran. In fact, about 45 minutes ago, officials in iran also confirming that they launched those missiles about 200 miles to the east of them into iraq. And the white house says President Trump has been briefed on this attack. Yeah, joining us now on the phone to give us more insight is the professor at stanford and the Hoover Institute. Professor, thank you so much for joining us. Your specialty is iranian studies. Tell us about your take on this whole thing thats happening at this hour. It is a major escalation that has the possibility of becoming even more major and more regional. It is a response to what happened to soleimani friday. The iranian officials, particularly in the last 24 hours, began to talk in a very militant language, saying that they are going to attack the u. S. In response. My only room for optimism is that they chose two Iraqi Military bases and i am hoping that arent loss of Life American loss of life, and that this will the Trump Administration to move in the direction of deescalating rather than attacking new sites in iran which will then beget much more escalation. Professor from the Hoover Institute is with us here. Thank you for your time. Can you tell us now if you think that iranians will continue to go on the offensive, or if they will wait almost like a chess match with the u. S. To respond to this . My sense is that they will wait. My sense is that, as i said before, they were put in a place by their own rhetoric, but also by the nature of the attack, soleimani wasnt just a military general. Soleimani was the secondmost powerful person in iran. And the decision to attack him was seen by the regime as a direct military attack on iraq. They needed to have a response, but i think the bases they have chose again, im hoping there is no loss of American Life might have been a way for them to show their muscle, to show that they have responded to act out the threats that they have made, but acted in a way that doesnt lead to more american escalation. That is my hope. Okay, professor malani from the stanford university. A professor who specializes in iranian studies. We appreciate your time. Again, a wait and see kind of game. Well see how the white house spornds. Thank you for your time. Well keep checking in with you throughout the night.
