Im kira klapper. Vianey arana has a look at the microclimate forecast. It is below freezing in some parts of the bay. In the north bay, 20s right now, in napa, look at that, napa, 29 degrees, santa rosa, officially below freezing, 31 degrees, and oakland, 38, and san jose, 38 degrees, and concord, 36, and we do have another storm system, making its approach, this is also going to be a cold system, which means yes, we could see the chance of some hail, and unfortunately, that is going to mean more snow, which could once again close the grapevine which i myself got trapped in heading into christmas day. The microclimate forecast, 50 degrees in san jose and 56 in oakland so it is going to be a cool afternoon and dry today, but this is what were monitoring next. Satellite radar, you can see it, just off the coast, the biggest impact right now, going to be pretty much in through the Higher Elevation area, but because it is a cold storm system, were talking about snow levels near 4,000 feet. Which could mean some of our higher peaks, windy, thunder, and i will take you through that time line coming up in about 15 minutes. That is crazy. See you then, vianey, thanks. We begin this morning with a mother in mourning. Her nightmare began on christmas night. When her twin sons were killed in a car crash. She is still trying to understand what happened but one thing she does know is her kids were trying to do the right thing the night they died. Feeling like something was wrong, they went and found the deadly accident scene. Of course, immediately, i was like something is not right. And then the coroners van shows up. Two kids. Here. The boys were gone. Her nephew and the Dublin High School student survived but hospitalized. Her two boys were killed. She believes the boys were doing what they loved when they died, helping friends and each other. That night, it was helping one another practice for a drivers license test. I think about it, like if theyre trying to get their license and theyre there to help each other get their goal. Nbc bay area news. Well, we have been covering this story from the very beginning. Investigators believe he may have assaulted other clients as well. We have a bit more perspective now about how bart police are enforcing their no eating policy at stations and on trains. You may remember the man who was cited for eating a sandwich on a bart platform back in early november. Steve foster is his name, he lived in concord, he was in furious when the act of eating breakfast landed him in handcuffs last month. So we sent bart a public records request to find out how often that happens and we just got the documents back. Take a look. Where grassfed cows produce rich, creamy milk for a truly delicious taste. Kerrygold. The taste that takes you there. Welcome back. At 7 10, taking a live look outside at San Francisco from San Bruno Mountain. It looks beautiful there. A little bit of cloud cover. It is extremely cold outside. 38 degrees for oakland right now. The north bay, napa, seeing temperatures below freezing. Vianey arana forecasts a cool day, a cool and clear day ahead of a possible storm moving in tomorrow. A terrifying scene in oakland, when an Early Morning fire ripped through this warehouse. An eerily similar scene to the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire several decembers ago. Fortunately everyone survived. But as today in the bay report, the People Living inside the warehouse were not supposed be there. Reporter a new fence encircled the warehouse, the citys latest effort to keep people out of this property after an overnight fire left people with no roof over their heads. The flames were coming out and curling up. The whole entire area was engulfed in flames. Reporter Michael Prince is one of those who got out. He describes the space where a pregnant woman was staying, she got out with minor injuries, according to the fire department, they redtagged this property, just after thanksgiving, and cleared out 20 people then. City leaders say this place has been a recurring problem. On more than one occasion, the city boarded up the building, and unfortunately, people came by, and pulled off some of the boards and snuck their way back inside. Reporter but neighbors clearly are not happy with the citys efforts, after our interview, city council member, tore down a poster that blames the fire on him, the fire department, and the police. The fire department, and the Police Department do not need to be insulted like that. Reporter neighbors then confronted him with their frustrations. It was squatting. It was drug activity. The little boy weighs less than five pounds but we are told he and his moth remember doing ju mother are doing just fine. Big changes in the Housing Market in the new year. It could push up housing prices even higher than they already are. It is aimed at helping the environment. New homes built in california after january 1st will have to have solar panels. Our business and tech reporter scott budman explains. Reporter here comes the sun. Or at least solar panels. Any new houses built in california after january 1st, will, by law, have solar panels on top. That means about 80,000 new homes here will be powered by the sun. They come into a house, they have solar already installed, saves them electricity costs right from day one. The ceo of fremontbased solaria, says for solar company, the new rule is both good for the environment, and good for the local economy. We have dozens of installers that install the panels, they have more and more opportunities to install those panels, in these new home, Construction Projects they didnt before. But with new Technology Comes new costs. And Home Builders know it. People who are buying, new construction, it will cost me an extra 20,000 or whatever it is going to cost because the build ser sure not going to foot the bill for that. Which means after a decade of steadily rising home price, California Home buyers will have to shell out more in the name of sustainable energy. The good news . If you can call it that, Real Estate Agent holly bar says most wont notice. I dont think it is going to be a deterrent. I think if you can afford to buy a brand new home in california, an extra, whatever the number is, 20, 30,000, is not going to slow you down. Scott budman, nbc bay area news. So will we be seeing any sun . Lets check in vianey arana with a look at the weekend forecast. The last weekend of 2019. I cant believe it. It went fast. Crazy. Is everybody back home from the holidays . Barely. I got back on the grapevine, i got stuck on the grapevine because of the snowstorm and turn back around, it took 11 hours to get here from southern california. Were glad you made it. And another snowstorm here, this could impact your Grapevine Community tomorrow, sunday, listen up. I will guide you through it so dont worry. San francisco, look at the skies right now, beautiful view there, and it is pretty clear, which means it is so cold, i mean look at the temperatures right now in napa, 29 degrees, below freezing there, and santa rosa as well, at 31 degrees, and concord, 36, san jose, 38 and take a look at oakland, 38 degrees, so a big kind of frosty morning, up through the north bay, and here is how we fair compared to the rest of the nation, and i really like to show this, when people complain about the cold, colder than the east coast, boston, 47 degrees. And so yes, it does get cold in california. Albuquerque right now dibbing down to 30. The only place i cant really talk about is castro, 15 degrees a really cold morning. And what is on deck for us . A low pressure system churning near alaska and that will continue the trek further down southward, continuing its move, from north to south. So lets take you through some of that time line. As we head through the afternoon, one thing you will notice is it is very clear and sunny to start. And later this afternoon, cloud cover to roll in and temperatures in the 50s, 58 degrees in san jose, and because of that system makes its approach, there is a beach hazard, because of the system, through 9 00 a. M. , sinker wave, if you have plans to head to the beach, be careful, and never turn your back to a wave. Taking through the timing. Overnight from north to south. By about 12 00, here is what happens. You start to see it in santa rosa, and napa, some of those stronger cells. Early on in the morning. You are not really going to get rain to the south bay. So the rain really start, the heaviest portion of it, midday through the evening. So i will fast forward again to 2 00, 3 00, with heavier pockets rolling through, and a chance of isolated thunder, with possible hail, and as we head into the overnight hours, look at this, at 8 00, another round of pretty heavy rain, and it is also going to be windy, late sunday, into early monday morning, and now this is a cold system, which means were going to get the possibility of seeing some snow levels at about four to 5,000 feet. Which means some of our local mountain top area, and yes, the possibility of hail, which means that grapevine commute that i was telling you about, it is going to be a problem yet again. Dont forget the niners game for tomorrow and new years eve is looking dry for us here in the bay. Looks good, vianey, thanks. 7 21. Still ahead on today in the bay, it is a sign of the times. Quite literally. And it will soon be gone. Why this piece of San Francisco history is going away. At 7 23 the end of the year is marking the end of a long time San Francisco business. It once was famous for the work it did, and for its iconic sign, as today in the bay joe rosto jr. Shows us, it is literally a sign of the times. Reporter in an Automotive Repair shop, the wheels of change are always turning. At this garage in San Franciscos tenderloin, there is 107 years worth of tread on those tires. This business came in originally 1912. Reporter but most people know this business, not for its brake jobs or oil changes. They know its iconic sign. For travelers on larken street, the large leather board sign is a changing board of quotes, messages, observations. The garage was started in 1912 by harry khan and c. Kaville and moved to the Current Location in 1935 where they started writing quotes and messages on butcher people mounted on an easel. People would come into the store and read what he had put a quote on for the day. By 1956, the sign outgrew the easel and butcher paper and became a neighborhood fixture. Lorne dine bought the bid in the 70s. Peddling tires ever since. He and his coowners kept the sign going. These are poetry books. Magazines. Maybe the newspaper. We never talk about money or tires or brakes. Sometimes you have to go somewhere to figure it out, what we put up there. From across the street, in his bar, epper nortons boozeland, the owner kevin is among the scythe signs devoted followers. Like poetry you get to read every time. It is like a treasure. But in a sign of the times, the land where the garage sits was sold, to make way for an Affordable Housing project. They are closing by the end of the year. You feel something. The art deco building will become a memory, and so will the signs. Sort of. The developer Tenderloin Neighborhood Corporation plans to integrate the old sign into the lobby of the new building. And put some sort of digital one in its place. It is the end of service and a place where the rubber meets the road. A goodbye worthy of one last quote. This greasy landmark is going to be gone. Joe rosato jr. , nbc bay area news. That will be sad not to see those quotes anymore. Hopefully they do come up with that digital sign. 7 26. Much more ahead on today in the bay. Santa rosa 31. Can you tell i was on the road for 11 hours yesterday . Fuzzy sandals. Satellite radar, this is the next storm system, rain moving in forth to south, coming in from alaska, the low pressure system, it is going to be a cold storm which means a chance for hail and trech atreacherous drive once again for those having to travel through the grapevooin. This is an important time. And new years eve coming up. I have a look at that in 15 minutes. Vianey, thanks. Now to decision 2020. A team of mcdonalds employees are being now called heroes. For helping her escape her potentially dangerous boyfriend. It happened at the mcdonalds in lodi, on christmas eve. Police say the woman went to the counter, asked employees to hide her and call 911 but her boyfriend made her go through the drive through instead. So imagine the woman now in the drivers seat, at the window, didnt give up, she mouthed to the employees, to help her. And they quickly jumped into action. Informed everyone else kind of the drive through line and we held up two cars, in front of that car. Wow. It gave deputies time to get there and arrest the boyfriend. Inside their trunk, they found a stolen loaded gun, and discovered that man had been violent with the girlfriend in the past. Deputies say there is no telling what could have happened to the woman if the workers didnt get involved. Mcdonalds employees by the way, actually are trained to help save Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking victims. Wow. Now, to an incredible site, a crash in texas that caused an eightcar pileup including a semi truck. Wow. This was on highway 84 in lubbock county, in northern texas. Police were investigating a crash when that semi truck you see there jackknifed hitting car, almost hitting people. The dense fog didnt help the matter. This was only one of five crashes that happened in that area. This pileup included four semi tractortrailers, and four smaller cars. And amazingly only one state trooper and one driver injured, both are expected to survive. Back here in the bay area, an assault at a day spa. Still ahead on today in the bay, a dramatic night for the warriors. We have sports next. Welcome back after an extremely disappointing start to the season the warriors are finally on a role. Bay area rapper e40 at the k center last night. An incredible Fourth Quarter comeback. The warriors came roaring back from 12 points down to beat the suns. Final score, 10596. The dubs have won four straight games. We havent been able to say that for a while. That is a season high. They go for five in a row tonight against the dallas mavericks. 7 40. We have much more ahead on today in the bay. Coming up, a bay area mother voices her concerns after seeing a Health Hazard at her childs school. But now, her daughter has been expelled. We investigate why. Coming up. And it is a cold start. Frosty conditions in the north bay. Look at that. 29 degrees. It is going to be dry today. But we have another storm on the way. I will take you through the timing and your lake tahoe forecast coming up. Good saturday morning. I hope everyone had a lovely time with their family. It is 7 42. And look at this beautiful view from our San Bruno Mountain camera of the city. It is a clear start, which means yes, it is cold, but we dont have any cloud cover out there, the temperatures really managed to dip down, so much so, it is in the 20s right now, in napa. 29 degrees, below freezing, santa rosa, 31, and san jose, 38 degrees, as you head out the door in livermore, the sheltered valley, expect to see some frosty conditions out there. Livermore, 32 degrees. How is the day going to shape up. We are going to remain dry, mostly clear but we are monitoring the next storm system. This low pressure system, coming in, from alaska. And thats going to start to come down south and spread through the bay area by tomorrow. We will take you through the timing. But first, lets plan your saturday. It is dry today. You dont have to worry about the rain and temperatures are going to be cool in the 50s, and 58 in san jose, and 57 in concord, cool, mostly clear, and the clouds start to roll in tonight, and then that storm system is expected to trail on in, but if youre going to be heading into any of our beaches along the coastline, we will be dealing with rough surf and that is affected by about 9 00 a. M. And the conditions through the late day as well. And we have of course, the lake tahoe forecast, because i know, a lot of people will be driving back or planning to head up there by new years, and another system making its way tomorrow tomorrow is a cold system, with snow levels to 4,000 feet. A couple more inches through tomorrow so there could be a Winter Weather advisory that takes effect as early as tomorrow morning. Treacherous driving conditions, sunday, early monday morning, i would not advise it. Definitely expect to check that travel before you bother heading up there. Chain controls may be required. Your hour by hour outlook, lets talk about this one. A lot of people probably have plans on sunday and by 12 00, the majority of the storm is to the north, santa rosa, and san rafael, and you can push this forward and see how the pockets of rain start to push through from midday to 4 00, and start to see heavier rain, and that is going to bring the possibility of some hail, because it is such a cold storm, it is coming up from alaska and we could see the chance of isolated thunderstorms, and it is going to really start to get windy right as the system passes around 8 00. Look at the heavier pockets of rain here, which means gusty kind, 20 to 30, tomorrow night and into early monday morning. And we are expecting to be under a microclimate weather alert, as that rain continues through early monday morning and then it begins to move out by monday afternoon. Over the next few day, as the system passes, the first initial storm system will be cold which means dipping temperatures monday night and then i know youre probably wondering about new years eve, we have another system as of right now, that models are showing that rain staying off to the north and more near the oregon border and that is going to bring a dry new years day. That is great news, but remember, more storms on the way for tomorrow. It looks like a good way to start the new year. Vianey, thanks. Still ahead on today in the bay, at 7 45, Health Concerns rising at a private Bay Area School built next to a concrete factory. Parents say theyre being threatened to stay quiet. We are talking about one punishment a child received after her mother spoke up. Welcome back. California lawmakers are now calling for new rules to protect the health of private school students. This comes after our Investigative Unit exposed potential hazards at the new Stratford School campus built right next door to a concrete plant. And parents at the Fremont School say they are being threatened by School Officials and told to keep quiet about their Health Concerns or face the consequences. Heres our Investigative Reporter bigah sht shaban. Reporter this 9yearold lindsey is a top student and even though she loves her school, she had to find a new one. For four years, she attended the stratford private school in fremont. Ive been here since kindergarten. Will it be hard to leave . Yes. She is now enrolled at a Different School across town. Crystal is lindseys mom. For months, crystal has been publicly voicing concerns about a potential Health Hazard at her daughters school. Strat sto stratford is built next to a concrete plant with hazards that are known to damage lungs especially in children. Recess was full of dust. We sawdust storms in the playground. You would be playing outside when you would see it. Yes. Fremonts Planning Commission gave the okay to build the school. Based on the amount of concrete it thought was being produced next door. It turns out, the plant was actually making more than 350 times that amount. As a parent, obviously im worried about that. The plant says it was an innocent paperwork era, but now the safety risk to children could be significantly higher than previously thought. Nbc did an investigative reporting, and now, i know what went in this. Parents, including crystal, took their concerns to the fremont city council, and to other lawmaker, in charge of protecting air quality around the bay area. Please do something. After the public outcry, trouble soon followed for crystal and lindsey. You got called into the print pals office. Yes. And because of what i did, lindsey got expelled from stratford. To hear that stratford is blaming you for hurting the school, what do you think about that . I think it is ridiculous. They also called some other parents and told them, if you say anything to the media, or public, your child will be expelled, too. We spoke to at least four other parents who shared similar stories. I took it as if you dont stay quiet, there might be consequences. Do you feel like you did anything wrong . Absolutely not. They are not doing enough to protect the children. We have valid concerns. Instead of doing more, they need to do, they are telling us to be quiet. Stratford said it paid for testing at the school saying air quality was in with state standards for a majority of the school days. And neither the director of the school or the founder of stratford would speak us to on camera. For months we have called and emailed hoping to speak to the founder of stratford. This is our fourth time coming to the stratford headquarters here in saratoga. Lets see if they talk to us today. And once again, we were told, sherry adams, isnt here. Reporter top officials with the bay area air Quality Management district recently voiced their own concerns how a private school gotc[v permissioo build in an area forbidden to Public Schools because of nearby pollution. The ceo. I dont want to sugarcoat this at all, this was not a good decision that was made. But we are dealing with this situation moving forward. In the wake of our last report, one of the directors of the district penned a letter to the agencys ceo. Requesting the district engage state lawmakers to create new legislation. That would require private schools to follow the same environmental building guidelines as Public Schools. In order to prevent anything to approve a project that potentially puts our children at risk of harm. The idea has already garnered support from californias most influential person in education, state superintendent tony thurman. If we require certain things for students, in Public Schools, regarding their health standards, why wouldnt that be the same for private students . Health is health. And all students deserve to be in a safe environment. Free from any kind of harm, including environmental harm. A new state law would come too late for lindsey, who is now trying to look on the bright side of attending a brand new school. With the concrete and the dust and stuff. Lindseys mom is frustrated her daughter was forced to leave stratford. What they did is retaliate against a nineyearold little gi girl. Thats something totally not acceptable for me. With the investigative team, today in the bay. We have much more ahead on today in the bay, coming up it is the clear the shelters segment, featuring our friends from pets in need. We will introduce you to ms. Ella fitzgerald, next. Welcome back. It is time for the clear the shelters segment. Featuring our friends from pets in need. The Development Manager Jacqueline Stewart is here with the anna marie johnson. Holding Ella Fitzgerald. We joked offair how Ella Fitzgerald would feel about having a chihuahua named after her. She is four years old. Very cute. And interestingly, she has been with you for a few months which i feel isnt typically, a chihuahua is usually taken pretty quickly, adopted pretty quickly but she has a behavior condition. Tell me about that. Yes, so she has been with us for over 160 days, so which is pretty long, for a small little guy, and we pulled her from the Central Valley shelter where she had been there for over a month, no problems besides her being a little desperate for attention. And we can deal with that. She ended up getting adopted really fast. And then the family noticed that she had this behavior problem where when she gets agitated or aroused she will growl and spin and chase her tail. So we have been working on that, and obviously, living in a shelter, it kind of exacerbates the problem, but you can see, she is very loving. She is enjoying the rubs right now. So when she is calm and relaxed, this is kind of her day to day, she likes to curl up in a bed, and we actually got some really great information of how she does in a home. She has been in a foster home with College Students and they say with her, she was great, she basically was able to mellow out. And the spinning nearly ended itself. Nearly ended. And cud ling and long walks. Cuddling, walks, hang out with them and would still get a little anxious tail spinning when she would meet new people but with the people she knew in the home, totally relaxed. Good to know. So you know, it could just be that shes stressed in the shelter. Which is pretty normal. Yes. And so jacqueline, you have a deal going on to kind of persuade people to adopt her. Your adoption fee, which is usually 125 is being sponsored by the bacon memorial fund. Yes, so her and about 15 other animals have been sponsored through donations, through the memorial fund, and it is just a little bit extra incentive for people who might be interested, a little bonus at the time of adoption. Well, we do hope people check out ella fitzgerakd on your web site. Pets and me. Org. And find out about the 15 other animals being sponsored by the memorial fund. We hope she finds her forever home.
