Coast guard responding on the island of kauai, looking for any signs of the green and white aircraft and those on board reportedly including two minors the owner of the helicopter alerting authorities thursday evening, after the aircraft carrying one pilot and six total passengers never returned from its tour of kauais coast. Officials say no signals have been received from the helicopter which is equipped with an electronic locator in a statement overnight, a coast guard official saying, the weather conditions are challenging. Senior National Correspondent kate snow is here with that story. Reporter good morning. This is a case the president has been personally involved in. This past summer, gallagher was acquitted of shooting civilians and killing a captive isis fighter, but this morning, the weekly, a tv series from the New York Times, has exclusively obtained navy interviews with the Seal Team Members who accused gallagher of misconduct in the first place up until now they had only been quoted in trial. We want to warn you that what you are about to see and hear is disturbing i saw eddie take a shot at probably a 12yearold kid. Tapes never before seen in public members of Navy Seal Team seven speaking on camera with investigators in the spring of 2017 about their platoon leader Eddie Gallagher. The guy got crazier and crazier. The video part of a trove of information obtained exclusively by the weekly. You could tell he was perfectly okay with killing anybody. One after another, the platoon members come in and they paint a picture of a platoon leader who has gone totally rogue. They say that he was killing people just to kill them men, women, children, it didnt matter the guy was toxic. We cant let this continue. The times reviewed hundreds of Text Messages, they say, were sent by gallagher, disparaging the seals who reported him he has repeatedly reaching out to other seals, telling them about this investigation, and how angry he is, and he wants to spread the names of his accusers to make sure people know, you know, in the hopes that they will be blacklisted by other seals. Helmet camera obtained by the weekly never shown outside of a courtroom shows the isis fighter prosecutors accused gallagher of murdering. Gallagher is seen with a medic bag pushing him and then the camera goes black. It is not clear why. You say he stabbed him. One time, multiple times in 2018, Seal Team Member corey scott told investigators he saw gallagher stab the isis fighter multiple times probably two or three times just like a stab about right here, just in a few times. Is there any possible way that what he was doing could be interpreted as for medical purposes to help out no. There was no way this was anything other than to attack and to kill this person . No. But scott changed his story, at gallaghers trial, and said he was the one who killed the fighter. Did you suffocate him yes Eddie Gallagher was convicted of posing for a photo with the corpse he was found not guilty of murder and attempted murder. And has long proclaimed his innocence. There are a couple of members of the platoon who had a personal animosity toward Eddie Gallagher. They didnt perform well in combat they were afraid of being called out for being cowards. They made up a story and they went with it overnight gallaghers attorney calling their accounts unsupported and fake. If there was a problem with chief gallaghers mental state, they would have examined him, they would have found that, there is not. Reporter in november, President Trump ordered the pentagon not to strip gallagher of his rank, and trident pin, the Navy Secretary was fired for his handling of the case the president publicly showing support for the navy seal. He was a great fighter. He was one of the ultimate fighters tough guy. Reporter just this weekend, gallagher posting photos, meeting President Trump, for the first time, at maralago. The navy seals and an attorney for corey scott are not commenting nbc news has not spoken with any of the individual seals shown in those taped videos but the New York Times has reached out to every one of them. They all declined to comment in print and on camera. Gallaghers lawyer tells us he plans to file a lawsuit against the weekly and against the reporter and kate, you mentioned that the New York Times reviewed Text Messages that had been sent by gallagher but those werent the only one, right . Right they looked at group Text Messages sent between the seals who you just saw who reported gallagher and one of them saying we are going to answer to a higher power some day and everyone happens for a reason, not compromising our integrity and keeping right on our side is all we can do. Gallaghers Attorney Says those Text Messages between those guys show that they were coordinating their stories. Certainly has gotten a lot of attention, kate. Let me start with you, what was it like to play this role, and you are tough. Where do you find that fierceness well, megans writing, the novel is so clear and so specific about the way that she moves through the world and i think i kind of studied it, a very good bible to have about how colette works as a human. Where did you come up with the character and the idea for the show, which is a little dark, it becomes a little bit of a mystery. Yes, it does. I mean it is always my experience, the female adolescence, it is a really messy time, it is a time with lots of conflicting feelings, and big feelings, and just sort of figuring out how you want toe one point of view, so you d become a woman, and i just wanted to sort of get underneath that, and this became the perfect dynamic, this sort of complicated coach, athlete relationship, that you see in male stories often but rarely female stories. For fans of the book itself, how is this show different or is it different in a measurable way it follows the story rather closely but the book is only the one point of view, so you dont get collet, and you dont get to go behind the coachs closed doors, and you find out what makes her tick, what makes her so tough. Why cheerleading . Did you want to focus on cheerleading it is such a competitive sport and the cliche is it is pompon waving and hip swinging but it is really quite dangerous and very risk taking and young women who do it love it. So i wanted to get underneath that a bit. Were you an actual cheerleader growing up no, i was not you had to learn the moves. Yes, i had to we had cheer camp for a couple of weeks, before we started shooting the pilot, where basically, because we had a lot of professional cheerleaders on the show, and dancers, and everyone who wasnt, a professional in that sense, we came and we learned everything that we could in that period of time about it. This becomes a bit of a mystery. Willa, were you a little surprised as you took on this role, the fact that it becomes a little dark and where it ends up, basically . Well, no. Actually i feel like you can kind of tell from the pilot episode that i had read before i had read the entire book, that colette is a character with a lot of secrets and a lot of darkness, and so i think its, you know, youre at the right jumping off point. Megan, what is it like to have a story of yours brought to life on screen its really beyond thrilling. And very surreal ive been developing it for seven years. Seven years. The book came out in 2012, so it it sort of has been my baby so it really means so much and to have a character i know so well, embodies so beautifully by willa has been a big thrill, because she is, you know, she just goes to dark places, and it was just, it feels like to have her in good hands. And willa what do you hope young women and young men take from this. I think it is exciting to be in a point in time where there are complicated female characters who are not just one archetype. And i think that obviously, all of the three main women in this show have both a lot of goodness and you know, a lot of darkness inside of them and i think there is something to inflate, and both sides of that. I love that idea. Megan, was that part of your goal to have complicated female characters absolutely. Because we know we are complicated as women and it seems we have a male prerogative that he is serious and enigmatic and it is thrill athrill to get into those complications with women. Theres a complete parallel for me between being outside, youre limited to only your own curiosity, but food, if you can abolish fear from your for the 37yearold edwardo garcia, each month of montana fresh mountain air is another chance at life. The outdoors is sort of where i reached that, and then as a chef, obviously, it is where i go to get a lot of what i eat. I was a yacht chef making good money. I had a good career. Kind of stepping into this next thing. On october 9th, 2011, everything changed while hiking, garcia saw what he believed to be a dead bear cub and a large tin can, as he got closer. I took a knife out of my hip and put it in my left hand and 24 volts of power arced and i was electrocuted. The can was compromised and dangerously active. My eyes open and i knew in that moment i was die can and i was walking to get help. I was walking to save my life. Within three hours, he was sent to the university of utah burn trauma center, and charred and near death, he would spend 48 days undergoing 18 surgeries. Bone chilling quote from the surgeon on call was that i was a bag of bones with a heartbeat when i was gurneyed in that day. Then it was a sunday afternoon and the surgeon just said hey, heres the deal. Heres the infection, in your damaged left hand. The following tuesday, surgeons amputated his left hand i had a job to do and my job was to be an active participant in my recovery and so relearning, it was everything trying to learn, refine knife skills or peeling. And i had to learn, i dont need to be a perfectionist in the kitchen anymore and my recreation is learning how to fly fish and learning how to be outside safely again it changes you thats rhubarb. Thats rhubarb. I thought about why me . And why was i spared or how did i make it through that every day . We are all born fighters and thats the only thing that got me out of the woods that day, is nothing remained except the fighting will to live. That life was not meant to be walked solo. And i think i knew that before the injury, and yet i dont know if i was truly living it eduardo garcia, good morning to you, sir. Good morning. It is an amazing story. On so many levels. First of all, how are you doing today . Feeling fine. Feeling good you got a great sense of humor about all of this. You have to i think we decided early on as a family, i shouldnt say we, and thats important, i think it was my older sister, you got to laugh through this you know, and you know, and i think the next step was we had to encourage others to laugh with us. They dont know how to approach it from the outside. Where does that resilience come from. Obviously you take it in from your family and the people you surround yourself, but how do you get yourself through each next step . One step at a time. One at a time. I remember cooking at 15 and having all of these tickets up and theyre all the same thing, burger, cheeseburger, pizza, fries. One at a time one at a time. And we know you got married earlier this year. Congratulations. Thank you very much. Talk about what this year has been like for you, both personally, but also professionally, in terms of your cooking, and in terms of your healing. Well, personally, i mean getting married is tremendous. 38 and so it is coming up to that crux move in my life, it is huge, and then of course, the professional side, working, my food company, montana mex, and trying to Pay Attention and respect the Recovery Process, the emotional Recovery Process and also professionally, to still be me, still be a chef and put myself into that and then a funky balance, but working to find that balance still. How much of cooking has been a part of your healing process it has been huge. It has been huge you know, at one point, just looking at holding a knife, or trying to hold a piece of produce, how do you get a hook and how do you figure that out and you have to step in, step up to the table, and just start participating and say all right, one at a time. And maybe it is failure, it maybe a success, it doesnt really matter, just step up. Just a few days away from a new year, whats 2020 holding in store for eduardo. You know, i think ive kind of, i have this burning curiosity, and on the one hand, i think, well, thats what got me here. And yet, i realize curiosity is a skill set, it is a beautiful thing and yet focusing back and i think i realized that humility is a superpower and saying i am going to humbly step into my dreams and aspirations and invite others to participate and say all right, lets take this idea, lets take it and see where it can go. What are your specials . What is your go to recipe you know, i love cooking over coals. I love cooking over a fire i think it is just an innate connection we all have, and i love doing it together in a group you know, so i could cook by myself, probably taste great, but it always tastes so much better when im doing it with family, with friends, with others.
