Youre looking live at San Francisco. On your left, san jose, christmas in the park. On the right, the heaviest rain weve seen in San Francisco. Pretty muggy, wet, cold, yucky out there. It was coming down. That rain is creating some bad news for flyers. Weathers impacting flights in and out of San Francisco. Strong winds causing delays of almost three hours, according to airline trafficking website flightaware. So far, there have been more than 30 cancelations, more than 200 delays. Rain in the bay means more snow in the sierra. And this is picture for you. This is i80 near kingveil. The past 30 minutes. You can see the snow on the ground there. Those cars backed up, they are moving slowly. Heres a look at highway 50 near echo summit. You see snow also on the road there. Caltrans just tweeted that chain controls are in place for both i80 and highway 50. Really important for you to remember that. Yep. I was born and raised in San Francisco. I was driving on 19th avenue about 3 00 today, and i do not remember it ever, ever pouring that hard. It was incredible. Yeah. When you had about three quarters of an inch of rain fall in an hours time, that adds up quickly. That is really whats made the rainfall totals very impressive. One to two inches of rain is a pretty good storm for the bay area. Keep in mind that San Francisco total, almost an inch and a quarter, almost three quarters of that fell just between 2 30 and about 3 15 on top of a concrete landscape of hillsides, obviously roadways and storm drains that were clogged. That caused problems. Similar issues around 880 into oakland. It was San Francisco and the central bay that saw from three quarters of an ever of rain to almost an inch. Right during the midafternoon hours. Notice the santa cruz mountains, three inches of rain. San jose, one third of an inch. Were adding to the totals as the rain thankfully moves away from San Francisco. Cloudy skies, 58 degrees. Christmas in the park. A little drenched right now. 59. Kind of muggy out there. Weve got rain flying in the evening hours. Still near 60 outside. Thats the line that caused all the problems into San Francisco, oakland, and berkeley. That was midafternoon. Right now a very different view as were still seeing a few scattered showers. Nothing like we saw earlier this afternoon. Now keep in mind for the north bay, sonoma county, napa county, northern marin county, you still have that Flash Flood Watch up to about 10 00 tonight. The rain rates here have certainly come down compared to where they were a little bit earlier this afternoon. Trivalley starting to see a break. Here you can see where most of the rain is. From millipedes south of the sunol grade, into san jose. Campbell, saratoga, los gatos, highway 17, still getting slammed by pretty good rain. And now more of the rain spilling toward morgan hill and gilroy. Notice behind that line, not a lot left. Well still see scattered showers off and on tonight. Maybe just still a slight chance of an an isolated thundershower at times near the coast. Tomorrow, still some showers in the forecast. Not the outright ce the rainfal now as we finish the weekend, most of the higher totals around the santa cruz mountains, less for San Francisco and oakland through the day tomorrow. The trend will actually be the opposite of what we saw today. Instead of the afternoon being the peak time for showers, tomorrow morning will be the most widespread for parts of the south bay, midday still a few more showers, notice how San Francisco and oakland will start to see less of that toward midafternoon. And then toward the evening, dryer air comes if n from the north, showers should start to shut down. That should follow us into monday. And the week aheads going to be a little bit different. High pressure off to the west. Strong enough to kind of take the energy out of these incoming storms. Still enough for showers for San Francisco north, especially for the second half of the week. Youll notice here rainfall estimates of the shower chances hitting next week are a lot less than what were going through now and what weve seen the past seven to ten days. The forecast has a few showers lingering around until sundown for the bay area. Monday looks dry. Tuesday night into wednesday, a few more showers. We think mainly for the north bay. Wednesday morning, probably the best chance of showers in the bay area might be toward the start of next weekend. Those rain totals about a quarter inch. Not the inch per hour that we saw around San Francisco. Youre right. We dont often see that around here. This system did pull in tropical moisture. Helped to boost the rain rates for a time. Yeah, you dont get that often in any city in america thats got that many paved roads and hills thrown in. Thats going to run off quickly and lead to problems. Rob, thank you so much.
