It is the Main Attraction but this weekend, they could be threatened by heavy rains and fierce winds predicted to head our way. The executive director tells us they have crews at the ready. They will focus on making things are tied down, and we cant do anything about the ornaments flying off the trees, but we can do our best to manage keeping the trees up and lit. Christmas in the park did have to close for one entire night, a few years ago, when high winds threatened the displays. For people near creeks, in san jose, cleaning up before the storm is a necessity, they saw the damage two years ago, when coyote creek and other waterways flooded. And the faa actually isnt sharing the results, and critics already are blasting the test. No children, no elderly, nor disabled people were used in the study. Only people between the ages of 18 to 60. Critics say that doesnt reflect the typical pool of passengers on any given flight. No black friday deals on one holiday staple, the Christmas Tree, the average price for a tree is now 76. The reason for the increase actually dates back to the 2008 financial crisis. Farmers didnt sell as many trees that year, and that left fewer space, less space, i should say for new trees to be planted, one that 11 years later would create, not enough harvest and recent droughts and wildfires have killed lots of trees. One of the biggest shows in the u. S. Is competing for your Holiday Spending dollars at the San Jose Convention center. You can see all of the jewelry, art and Specialty Foods up for sale and all handmade here in the usa. Small Business Owners say it is tough to compete with big stores on black friday. It is really important that you do so. Vianey is here to talk about the weekend weather, unfortunately, which might deter some people from heading out. If you plan accordingly, you should be okay. And i will break down the timing for you, and right now is the window where you can get out and it is still fairly dry and go run the errands and weve been talking about this, clear the storm drain, secure the Patio Furniture and i dont want any flying lawn chairs. Umbrellas. And people dont think about those things. All of that can really become a danger, and also, we have the heavier pockets of rain that are expected to move in tonight, and thats going to create a threat for potential flash floods so lets get right to you it, a beautiful view over San Francisco and the current temperature at 46 degrees, and it is not as cold as what we saw yesterday, but even then, at this hour, were still seeing some chilly temperatures up through the north bay and 45 degrees in san jose right now, and wind speeds at 12 miles an hour and it is cloudy and gloomy and here is what were tracking, and satellite and radar, you can see the system, just off the coast and beginning to make its way in through the bay area, so what exactly is an Atmospheric River . I will get to that in a second. But we have very own storm ranger up and scanning and you can see a little bit of rain coming through, the lightest rain is expected pretty much right there, in through the first half of your morning, right around 8 00, 9 00. The microclimate highs, coast to bay, inland, all windy but temperatures remain in the 50s, so in the 40s, for the highs. And still a little chilly and youre certainly going to need the coat and lets get to what an Atmospheric River is because we have been using this storm to describe the storm incoming and basically, its higher rain rates per hour than a typical storm and you can see the formation of sort of think of it as a river in the sky. It is attaching the moisture from the tropics and creates a bloom of moisture and check out the direction, headed right into the bay area, and it makes it an Atmospheric River, and a description based on how it looks on the very own radar right here, and so all in all, here is what were tracking for this incoming storm system. Possible debris flows especially near the burn zones near the kincade fire, and localized flash flooding as well. Urban and small street flood advisories may be possible, especially considering how high those rain rates will be per hour and also sierra closures could be possible as well. So if you have plans to travel up to the sierra, or once yet again, down through Southern California through the grapevine, you know how messy that gets. Head out now. Here is the important time line. This is the one that everybody wants to know about because youre planning your day. So your hour by hour, right now, 9 30, you could see weve got light rain pushing through, and it is supposed to turn windy through the afternoon, with increasing rain, and then im going to fast forward the time line again, you can see it becoming widespread. But there are heavier pockets of red and yellow hughs that you can see on the radar, it will bring the heavy downpours at time around 6 30 dinnertime, santa rosa, san rafael, San Francisco, you can see another line of showers, fast forwarding the time line, overnight into sunday morning. And the heavy rain continues. With gusty rain really taking over into the overnight hours. And into tomorrow as well. Sierra snow ahead. Several inches of snow. Very windy. Low snow expected at about 7,000 feet. And that rain will continue into monday. Showers to the south on tuesday. And a brief break on thursday. And just looking way out ahead, weve got another system potentially forming as we head into next weekend. Busy week ahead. Kira . Oh, my. Thanks for the warning, vianey. It is 7 21. Still ahead on today in the bay, a thanksgiving to remember. The lifesaving moments that brought four strangers together. It is a story that will make you bay area proud, next. Welcome back. 7 23. What you are thankful for . Its a question most of us think about this time of the year. And for one bay area man, it is a very easy answer. He is thankful for his life being saved. One thanksgiving day. A few years ago. Today in the bay Garvin Thomas the story in this mornings bay area proud. Mike learned two things from his thanksgiving day experience three years ago. First, no matter how good a shape you are in, know the signs that your heart might be having trouble. Second, if something bad does happen, the Silicon Valley turkey trot, not the worst place to have it happen. 24,388 runners set off at the start of the 2016 Silicon Valley turkey trot. By the end of the race, exactly four of them would be bonded for life. We have a connection that very few people have and something that we can, you know, we can appreciate a lot. 10 1 2 minute mile. It was mike in a painful way brought them all together. The then 49yearold experienced runner was on the almeda, just about a mile from the 10k finish. Okay, lets sprint this thing out. Finish the race, right . And then i, you know, all of a sudden, i just felt really lightheaded. And i went down, and hey, i must be fainting, i never fainted before, i guess this is what it feeled like to faint and thats where i had the heart attack. Apparently it this is where i collapsed. That was the bad news a cardiac event. He was later told he only had a 10 chance of surviving. So when i still see him, i kind of knew. The good news is that this woman, andrea, and annie, were also running that day. Something told me to go back and look. Zenabu, a cardiac unit nurse was the first to stop. The moment i saw mike was when he was clutching his chest and leaning over. Annie, a nursing student, was next. I was running with a friend, and she said, when you saw that, you just like, i have never seen you like that. You just like went into your nurse mode. And then andrea, an e. R. Nurse, joined in the rescue. The three, abandoning their races, to join the race to save mike. Performing cpr, and keeping him alive long enough to make it to the hospital. So appreciative of them. There is no words for it. It is an experience that three years later, mike still gels on, but it turns, gets on, but it turns out to be a moment that changed all their lives. There is the affirmation it gave a nursing student, that she made the right career choice. And two experienced nurses, the knowledge that even under less than ideal circumstances, their skills are up to the test. The four regularly get together, to this day, and are even planning on running this years race, continuing what is becoming for them, the most thankful of thanksgiving traditions. Now, we should note that the three women were not the only ones who came to mikes rescue. There were Police Officers and other race personnel who helped keep him alive. And mike actually did finish that race, seven weeks later, in january, he was able to finally walk across the finish line, and get his medal. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. What a story. It is 7 26. We have much more ahead on today in the bay. Coming up, veteran journalist tom brokaw is in the bay area. And he is talking about impeachment. It is 7 29 on this november 30th. The last day of november, brings us under a microclimate weather alert. A live look at the Golden Gate Bridge on the left and our Doppler Radar on the right. And as we head into a tumultuous weekend. Thanks so much for joining us. Im kira clapper. Vianey arana has a look at the microclimate weather alert. And december is coming in like a winter mess. Absolutely. So after what seemed like forever eternity of a dry weather pattern now were going into a a pattern of an incoming storm system and models are showing an additional storm system setting up. I want to get you out the door. 35 degrees in santa rosa. 40s in san jose. And youre going to need your coat but make sure it is one that is waterproof. This is what were tracking heading into the afternoon. Satellite radar right now, still casing that Atmospheric River off the coast, beginning to make its way into the bay area. And we have own mobile Doppler Radar, and the only ones in the bay area that have it and once the storm system really moves in, this gives us a surface level view of the cell passing right down to your street level. So you can really time out the storm, and pinpoint it to your location, and you can literally see it scanning as the storm ranger really begins to kind of take over as we head into the afternoon. But here is a look at the microclimate highs and wondering about the temperature, in the 50s once again. Very similar to yesterdays temperatures. No major changes there. And another thing to look out for is going to be the wind. Do not fight youmbrella in this wind. Take your quote. Way too windy for umbrellas and the wind advisory at 10 00 a. M. And remain in effect as of right now through monday. Oh, wow. So we will time out the storm for you. And it will be a very wild windy weekend ahead. Until monday. Yes. Until monday. Make it a rain coat at that. An incoming system already, starting to make its way into the bay area, and you can see it on the satellite radar, i want to zoom in to our very own storm ranger, mobile Doppler Radar, the only ones who have this and as the intensity of the storm increases through the afternoon this is able to scan and get down to the surface street level, down to the very street, so we will be able to time that out precisely as it pushes through the bay area. Right now, were at the calmest part of the storm, this is the window of what is considered the driest weather that we will see today. And live rain early on. Temperatures in the 50s through the afternoon. And then that wind will begin to pick up, right through the midday, so i want to explain this to you, because we hear this often. We talk about ttmospheric river. What is that . It brings in higher rain rates per hour than the typical storm. And it is a plume of moisture that taps into the tropics, creating this riverlike effect in the sky. Think of it as a river in the sky and it is tapping its way, making its way in for california. And a quick simple explanation there of what an Atmospheric River and keep that in head any time we are talking about it. Kira and i were talking about that means, and there we go. We have the debris flows near the burn zones, which could bring the possibility of localized flooding. Especially with the intensity of the storm, as we time it out, and also, looking at the urban and small stream flood advisories, that could be possible, and this one is really important. All of my viewers who are getting ready to go to the sierra, a lot of people ask for the lake tahoe forecast, closures are possible with heavy snow and gusty winds and right now is the window to get out the door. And grab the coats and head out now before you get trapped in the storm. This is the timing of the storm. This is very important. Lets get to you the hour by hour outlook, this is the time right here, follow me with this. So we have the kind of stronger storms, moving in around 5 00. But we begin to see rain within the next hour or so. Around 7 47. Right around 9 00. You so see moving in faster to the coastline. San rafael, oakland, and turning windy but look at this line of heavy pockets of those orange and red hues, and moves in around 8 00 a. M. Tomorrow, and this line is going to push down, bringing heavy downpours at times, all the way down through the san jose area, also through the south bay, and the santa cruz, highway 17, and nor get about it.
