That is not the case with donald trump i mean, look at him. I mean, that is how a cat reacts when you try to move them off your bed [ laughter ] alright, you know, fine just stay there. In fact, one small detail we learned from last weeks impeachment hearings was that trump hates mornings you might remember that an embassy staffer, david holmes, testified that he overheard a call between trump and his handpicked ambassador to the e. U. , gordon sondland, in which they discussed their scheme to orchestrate a quid pro quo with ukraine. Holmes said he could hear trump screaming on the other end of the call and then added this after the call ended, ambassador sondland remarked that the president was in a bad mood, as ambassador sondland stated was often the case early in the morning [ light laughter ] seth first of all, it doesnt surprise me that trump is in a bad mood early in the morning. Look what he eats. He has the diet of a 16yearold stoner [ laughter ] when you have that much fried food sloshing around in your digestive tract, youre not going to sleep well. Thats why trump always looks like he just woke up screaming in the middle of a nightmare, where he is being chased by a giant drumstick with the head of adam schiff. [ laughter ] so the impeachment hearings establish not only that trump orchestrated the criminal conspiracy to extort a foreign country to interfere in the 2020 election using hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money, they also established that trump hates mornings. And we saw trumps irritability on full display friday when he woke up bright and early and called in for a Video Conference with his therapist, the host of fox friends. [ light laughter ] now, this interview lasted for a total of 53 minutes. [ audience ohs ] and heres a little time lapse just to give you a taste of how long and how insane it was mr. Trump, good morning to you. Good morning. Good morning. Good to have you on fox friends today. As you said in your tweet, another slow news week i see these hearings. We have a great day, and then you pick up the phony New York Times, which is a total phony paper. I dont read it anymore. You cant read it. I have really good hearing and ive been watching guys for 40 years make phone calls, and i cant hear when youre and you could be two feet away i cant hear why arent all those countries in europe why arent they paying why is it always the United States, the sucker . I got elected on that. You know, cause were like a gravy train for them okay were like their gravy train thats how it works one other thing, before we get off [ light laughter ] no, were not getting off the Republican Party i know we can keep this going all day, right . Its easy. cause if you have a bulldozer right or if you have heavy blowtorches and things, you know, you can break through. I love your show thank you so much, mr. This interview is still a revealing glimpse into the madness that has taken hold of the Republican Party and the rightwing media apparatus that supports it. For example, when the last impeachment hearing ended on thursday, the democratic chairman, adam schiff, ended it with a Closing Argument that summarized the evidence. This president believes he is above the law, beyond accountability and in my view, theres nothing more dangerous than an unethical president who believes they are above the law. And i would just say to people watching here at home, and around the world in the words of my great colleague, we are better than that. Adjourned. President , your rebuttal adam schiff is a sick puppy let me tell you, hes a sick puppy. Hes so sick now schiff, remember this, he makes it all up. Hes sick. Theres something wrong with him. Seth theres something wrong with him you just spent an hour screaming into a telephone [ laughter ] youre not a president you have the anger and free time of a sports radio caller i call it the failing New York Times, and let me tell you another thing, the mets suck. [ laughter ] i really think contrast is worth noting and sums things up perfectly. On one hand, you have a call measured factbased defense of democracy and the rule of law. From one side, that whatever their faults as politicians inhabits our actual reality. On the other hand, you have a redfaced lunatic screaming at three terrified captives [ light laughter ] trapped on a tv set like they were in a saw movie. I mean, look at them [ laughter ] they look like three outoftown tourists sitting on the subway who just saw a roach smoking a cigarette. [ laughter ] by the way, im pretty sure the roach was smoking the cigarette, because he just heard trumps interview. [ laughter and applause this trump guys out of his goddamned mind. [ laughter and applause but now, weve seen two weeks of conclusive evidence in public impeachment hearings with one witness after another testifying definitively that there was, in fact, a corrupt quid pro quo congress is likely to move on to the next phase, passing articles of impeachment in the house and starting a trial in the senate so in the fox friends interview, trump gave us a preview of one of his line of defense, a line republicans have unsuccessfully repeated for weeks. Trump said he was just concerned about corruption in ukraine, in general. Not the bidens specifically were looking for corruption. Theres tremendous corruption. Were looking for why should we be giving hundreds of millions of dollars to countries when theres this kind of corruption mr. President thats a big thing a couple of days ago, your ambassador to the e. U. , mr. Sondland, in his opening statement, said that there was quid pro quo there was quid pro quo, he said, because you wanted an investigation into corruption in exchange for a visit to the white house or Something Like that yeah. Well, thats total nonsense. I do want always corruption. [ laughter ] seth i dont think thats what you meant [ laughter ] also, whats with the insane syntax i do want always corruption . [ light laughter ] that sounds like something a gangster would say in an offbrand version of grand theft auto i do want always corruption car stealing is your next mission. [ light laughter ] its obviously a ridiculous lie that is contradicted by literally all of the evidence. Trump has no defense so all he can do is smear the witnesses with lies and conspiracy theories. Take for example, the former ambassador to ukraine, marie yovanovitch, who gave her moving testimony about the Smear Campaign against her yovanovitch is a Career Foreign Service officer who has served republican president s and yet trump concocted a ridiculous lie about her. I dont even know these people you know, i come to washington so, youve had bush, and you have nevertrumpers. And i come in and i end up with thousands of people that are nevertrumpers right clinton people. And sometimes the nevertrumpers are worse than clinton and obama people, believe me but this ambassador that, you know, everybody says is so wonderful, she wouldnt hang my picture in the embassy okay shes in charge of the embassy she wouldnt hang it it took like a year and a half or two years for her to get the picture up she said bad things about me didnt want to hang my picture in the embassy standard is you put the president of the United States picture in an embassy. Seth none of that is true. The embassy in kiev hung the official photographs of the president , Vice President , and secretary of state as soon as they arrived from washington, d. C. And a former Embassy Official in london tweeted, it took the white house almost 15 months to get official photos sent to embassies to hang and were instructed not to print other photos and i understand why the white house would prevent embassies from printing other photos, because then you could pick whichever one you want like, this one or, you know, like, this one [ laughter ] or my personal favorite, you know, this one in a way, that one looks like an actual a work of art that should be hanging in the Salvador Dali museum, under the title melting criminal. [ laughter and applause so, it was not, in any way, shape or form, it was not yovanovitchs fault the pictures were delayed it was the white houses fault and if youre wondering why it would take the white house 15 months to send photos, maybe it was because the guy in charge was on the [ bleep ] phone for an hour. [ laughter ] but this is the paranoid alternate reality trump and his fox news allies live in. Anyone who disagrees with his criminal behavior is a spy or a traitor or a socalled nevertrumper. Trump has used that phrase repeatedly, even to describe a russian adviser to Vice President mike pence, who testified last week. The advisor, Jennifer Williams was asked about that accusation during her hearing miss williams, are you a nevertrumper . Im not sure i know an official definition of a nevertrumper. Seth yeah. No one knows what it means, because its a dumb, madeup term it sounds like a fictional animal from a wrinkle in time. There were fur pigs and griffendoodles and nevertrumpers [ laughter ] this is the paranoid alternate universe trump and his allies and fox news inhabit and reinforce for their audience everyone who is against them is a spy and a traitor. Even gordon sondland, the ambassador who testified last week is supposedly a secret member of the deep state now this guy donated 1 million to trumps inaugural committee. 1 million and yet over the weekend, fox host Jeanine Pirro said sondland was out to get trump. His testimony is not only canceled by the facts but by his demeanor, his arrogance, and his inappropriate smirking, making it clear that he, like many deep state bureaucrats is not a fan of the president seth he is a deep state bureaucrat hes a business man who gave the president s inaugural committee 1 million and then trump appointed him. If hes a deep state bureaucrat, then everyone is Jeanine Pirro probably says the same thing about her own reflection in the mirror who are you and why are you copying my movements . Youre a part of the deep state. Dont point at me. [ laughter ] the Republican Party of donald trump is a movement consumed by paranoia, peering around every corner, looking for spies and saboteurs indulging and disseminating absurd conspiracy theories. For example, trump has been peddling an unhinged and completely debunked Conspiracy Theory that it was actually ukraine and not russia that interfered in the 2016 election. Trump repeated that insane claim again during his interview friday and even the fox friends, the show that is more protrump than virtually any other show on tv, tried to gently push back its very interesting they have the server, right, from the dnc Democratic National committee. Who has the server . The fbi went in and they told them, get out of here were not giving it to you. They gave the server to crowd strike or whatever its called, which is a Company Owned by a very wealthy ukrainian and i still want to see that server you know, the fbi has never gotten that server thats a big part of this whole thing. Why did they give it to a Ukrainian Company . Are you sure they did that . Are you sure they gave it to ukraine . Well, thats what the word is seth oh. [ laughter ] is that what the word is do you spend a lot of time hanging out on street corners, getting the latest scoop seriously, who do you even talk to, anyway you spent most of your time wandering around in circles on the white house lawn by yourself hes probably out there hoping to find the server crowd strike . Where are you, crowd strike . Like you know its bad when fox friends is questioning trump. That would be like e putting up a disclaimer during the kardashians that said, this is all scripted none of this is real. [ laughter ] yet, trumps allies on fox and the Republican Party have actually been repeating this nonsense even though his own former National Security official, fiona hill, debunked it during the impeachment testimony. And in an interview, trumps former Homeland Security advisor, tom bossert, also said it had been debunked and yet, on sunday, gop senator john kennedy repeated it anyway. Senator kennedy, who do you believe was responsible for hacking the dnc and clinton computers their emails was it russia or ukraine i dont know. Nor do you nor do any of us miss hill well, i mean, let me just interrupt to say, the entire Intelligence Community says it was russia right but it could also be ukraine seth no, it cant. Literally everyone who has studied this said it cant it was russia. Could have been ukraine could have been russia could have been a swamp witch that turned me into a senator from a rooster [ laughter ] could have been. And then theres Rudy Giuliani who in this very moment is under criminal investigation in fact, today, we learned subpoenas have been issues seeking information on giulianis consulting business as part of a broad federal investigation of possible money laundering, obstruction of justice and Campaign Finance investigations over the weekend, rudi was asked by fox news if he was worried about getting indicted and his reaction was very rudyesque are you afraid, mr mayor, that you could get indicted oh how long have you known me ive known you several years. You think im afraid . I dont know. Do you think i get afraid seth having no fear is a good quality if youre daredevil. But rudy gives a thumbs up to the camera before a foam hammer knocks him into the water. [ laughter ] and i do think you get afraid. I mean, have you looked at yourself you always look afraid you look like you found out what you did. It supports are spreading insane conspiracy theories. Seth wow born in the same hospital we both then went to nyu for grad school and started off with the same agency and then, we got married. Seth thats fantastic. Its like, if someones in their 80s, people you know, i got a great tweet from someone after one person i interviewed in their late 90s. And they said that the podcast proves people dont have to worry about being in their 80s and 90s seth well, thats nice yeah. [ laughter ] and it was so bad a show, that when when seinfeld was trying to sell his series, they said who is creating it with you . The show is really about the stories that we tell ourselves, the narratives that we live by how we judge and divide the world into good and bad, i suppose. So to demonstrate this point to you, im going to ask you in a second to choose one of these two colors seth gotcha. Green or yellow now, they both have i mean, youre going to choose the one ultimately you feel good about but they both have pleasant and unpleasant associations with them, i guess. Seth mmhmm. But i can be pretty certain which one youre going to choose even to the extent that i can invite you to try and outthink the process and maybe go for the one that you dont think that i want you to go for and all of thats fine, because this is ultimately going to be an unconscious compulsion, which should win out over conscious deliberations. I also find it works better if theres an incentive so 50 bucks says i know which one youre going to choose seth okay. If i get it wrong, you may keep the 50 bucks. Seth great make sense . Okay seth yeah. So, take your time. Its your choice seth okay. Its one or the other entirely up to you take your time, think about it seth im ready and then tell me when you have decided seth ive decided. Which one seth the yellow. The yellow . Seth yeah. You sure . Seth yeah. Well, then im afraid, i keep the 50 because i rather thought you would pick this one. Seth okay. And not this one. Seth all right [ cheers and applause so this gets i think this gets more interesting when we do it with people seth okay. Which of course, we kind of do every day so, i have here a bunch of photographs of members of the public seth okay. And i want you to divide them into two piles a pile of people you feel good about. First of all, some of them are kind of smiling and some of them are more neutral but dont let that dictate your choices. Seth of course not and also, im going to orientate them so theyre sort of round the wrong way for you so that you cant get too hung up on faces you find attractive and less attractive, cause its just hard to see from where you are. Seth okay. So divide them into two piles. So listen, its gonna be lets say the pile you like here, dislike here seth okay. And vaguely, like, even them out. Seth okay. So you cant decide you like all of them. Seth okay. So thats dislike this is like seth okay. [ light laughter ] okay youre doing this rather comfortably, actually. People often find it uncomfortable. Seth no. No, im fine [ laughter ] if you want to if you want to, like, take them from the middle or anywhere else, they dont have to come off the top seth no, no, no. Look, look, look, i am judging is what i do for a living okay. [ laughter ] youre working kind of intuitively, by the look of it yeah seth yes oops. Done okay, good well, that was easy. So look, the question is, i suppose, what is it that made you, for example, like that woman as opposed to seth uhhuh. Thats an awkward question but dislike, say, that woman what was it . Like can you remember what it was at the time . Seth well, you know, its already a little bit harder. [ laughter ] cause now theyre looking at me the right way up you know [ laughter ] there was she just seemed very sweet to me uhhuh. Seth and maybe a little more intense here okay. Seth yeah. Maybe that maybe thats sort of put you off or something . Seth maybe, yeah i dont know i tell you why i ask. Okay, so this is actually quite interesting. These are people off twitter seth okay. These are twitter users that i found. Seth yeah. So, this girl here that you put on, the kind of, the dislike pile seth uhhuh. Just, its kind of an interesting point. Seth yeah. This gal here that you put on the good pile, that you instinctively liked, she follows that guy [ cheers and applause and this guy here, look, he follows seth meyers. Seth meyers. Seth meyers.
