So, i cant believe ive got my own show so exciting. We go into production next year and thats about as much as i can tell you jimmy yeah, i was going to say. Jimmy but, you were telling me backstage that when you auditioned for thor, you actually auditioned for thor i did [ laughter ] yes i did. They basically at the time they were, um they were looking for sort of less well established actors, so that the audience didnt have an association. They just wanted people to see these new characters these new actors jimmy yeah and i the agreement was, if youre over 60 and youve got blonde hair and, you know, you can come and have a pop at it so, i actually auditioned. I never auditioned for loki. I only ever auditioned for thor, which is nuts. [ laughter ] jimmy and how long did the audition process it was about three months jimmy wow, so you thought for a second you go, this is real i could be thor. I for a second [ laughter ] for a time, [ laughter ] for a second, yeah jimmy we have friends over at marvel that sent us the original audition footage of you. Three british people in one show jimmy now, wait a second [ laughter ] youre not british at all. Oh, my god. Im from detroit, michigan i am [ laughter ] jimmy welcome to the show. Thanks man. Jimmy should i call you professor . I dont know what to even Michael Eric Dyson is good. Michael is even better jimmy oh, okay, good michael, tell me about this. You teach this course class at georgetown. Right jimmy about jayz. Why did you pick jayz well, hes one of the most extraordinary poets we have in American Culture today as i call him in the book, robert frost with a brooklyn accent. Rita dove with a jesus piece. I mean, hes a guy who understands poetry youve got poetic genius over here in tariq. Jimmy yeah one of the greatest rappers ever [ cheers and applause and youve got jayz, who combines serious literary devices, poetry and that kind of stuff, with the common everyday experiences of human beings and hes able to put it together in such a powerful fashion. So, when i teach the class, i tell them, were not just going to come in here and go, hey, some dope lyrics and jay is cool. We want to get to the depth. What was brooklyn when he was born what was 1969 . He arrived the same day that fred hampton died. What does that mean politically . What does it mean for the projects when he says, you know why they call the projects the projects because its a project, wherein we are the experiment. So, i wanted to probe his consciousness to see the political context in which he was born and then understand him as a figure and an icon in American Society so, that takes a lot of history, sociology, politics then, we get to the dope lyrics [ laughter ] jimmy yeah you break the book down into three categories umhmm. Jimmy can you tell us what those are . The first one is hustling uh, the historian Walter Macdougall says that, hustling is the central motif of american history, both in the sense of gogetters and people who are on the take. So, i try to look at what jayz talks about. You know, he explains why he became a hustler when he says, all the teachers couldnt reach me and my mama couldnt beat me hard enough to beat the match pain of my pop not seeing me so, with that disdain in my membrane, got on my pimp game. Forget the world my defense came. So, hes explaining, a father absence and hurting pain at the house drove him out into the world. So, i talk about how he hustled selling drugs, but how he transformed that hustling from the street into to the suites to become a ceo. Jimmy yeah, wow. Look at that yeah. Jimmy i mean, this is a great yeah. Jimmy made in america is exactly a great title for that because oh, yeah. I mean, it is american its american. I mean, american as american can be and then, the second part is poetry, where i talk about, as great as he is and as clever and witty as he, is people miss the kind of literary inventiveness. You know, he said, look, i would write it, if yall could get it but being intricate will get you wood, critic on the internet, theyre like, you should spit it. Im like, you should buy it. thats good business. Thats a rhetorical device and hes saying, dont just have me out here spitting it pay for what im talking about. [ light laughter ] and then the third one is politics, where he talks about a wide range of things you know, we know when the remmys in the system, aint no tellin will i love em . Will i diss em . An allusion to biggie. But he also talks about a lot of other stuff besides bling and bacchanalia and gleeful booty. He talks about common issues that people can deal with. He was saying, bin laden been happening in manhattan anthrax was crack back when. Back then, police was al qaeda to black men. So, hes talking about the tension between Police Departments and black people and trying to break that down. So, i felt those three categories allow me to explore just how smart a guy he is and also how observant he is about American Culture jimmy wow, i think its fantastic. Its fascinating thank so much for being here [ cheers and applause yeah. Jimmy youve got to come back i got to come back, man jimmy you got to come back, buddy.
