Mike, a look at that early commute. We do have a backup. You know its coming anyway. We didnt know this was happening until it just got called by chp. Closed right now. This does not affect the hesperian off ramp. It runs a pretty good distance through the area. Your alternate is washington and right at grant. If you know the area, you know what im talking about. Through the area those maintain a smooth drive. The off ramp is partially blocked. Thats it for the major freeway activity. Back to you. Thousands of people are without power in Sonoma County waking up with the lights off after whats been a very chilly night as well. Roz, i understand you just got an update from pg e. Reporter i did just get off the phone with pg e and i have numbers what they were able to do in napa and Sonoma County. They restored power to 5,000 customers overnight and did that by switching those customers to a transmission power source that was not affected by the shutdown. That, though, does still leave thousands of folks in the north bay area here without power. Lets show you what some are dealing with in santa rosa. At least 6,000 in the city area here that are still without power, it is frustrating for businesses like this restaurant. The owner spent 600 and cooked in a dimly lit kitchen to accommodate a party planned months before because he didnt want to disappoint his customers. They did a great job and somehow managed this and im super thankful. Reporter other nearby businesses are dark and closed. Traffic lights are out and neighborhoods are in the dark. Now the pg e representative tells me that by first light this morning, not waiting until 8 00 but first light this morning they will start the reinspections, go up by helicopter and look at lines as well as on the ground and as soon as they get their goahead they can start reenergizing the lines. Well keep you up to date as we get more of a time line. Some good news there. In the meantime good news. Rain may be in the forecast . We do have rain next week. This was starting out as the potential of being one of the top driest starts of the water year. We could see another wind event late sunday into early monday morning as this High Pressure remains just off to our west and low pressure drops in. What happens next could be our saving great here. Bringing us a chance of rain as we go into tuesday, wednesday and this looks like a better storm system that skipped us with the rain and only brought a few spotty showers to the bay area. As we go into next wednesday and thursday we see the gusty winds picking up and some scattered showers. One thing that may change, how much rain we get is the track. If it stays too far inland that could mean less rain for the bay area. Closer to the coast that could mean a little bit more as it gets warm moisture picked up and brought into the bay area. Thats something well be watching going into next week, the potential getting some rain in here before we wrap up this month. Couple up well talk about todays temperature. Looking forward to that, kari. 5 05 right now. Hundreds of people protested the appearance of conservative commentator ann coulter. Bob, the last time she was there to speak that was really violently shut down after she was set to make an appearance there. Reporter another person had to cancel because the protests turned so violent and disruptive and later that year ann coulter canceled. Last night she was back, invited by the Berkeley College republicans to speak inside wheeler hall. Outside more than 1,000 people protested her appearance because what they say are her racist and antiimmigrant views. There were barricades, a heavy police presence. One person was arrested and at least six more arrested outside, most of them were wearing black hoodies. There were also two people taken away from the demonstration in an ambulance. Its not clear on the extent or cause of the injuries and in order to get into the event Ticket Holders had to pass through a swarm of protesters who were blocking the entranceway. I bought a ticket to the event and was pushed around and called horrible names by people that go to my school. I went to the event as a way to peacefully protest and hear what she has to say and respond to it. And clearly we cant do that. We dont accept immigrant bashing, racist violence. This is berkeley. Were going ittto shut down th people every time. Reporter coulters speech focused on immigration, how a muslim ban should not be considered racist and mentioned the trade war with china. It says uber is experimenting with recording your ride either video or audio in case something goes wrong. You would be notified ahead of time of the recording. American law requires that. In texas apple ceo tim cook and President Trump toured a manufacturing plant there where they make mcintosh computers, a plant owned by flex. As i mentioned President Trump is about to slap new tariffs on chinese made goods and most of what apple makes is make in china. Build plants in our country not in china. Thats whats happening. The president later tweeted today i opened a major apple manufacturing plant in texas that will bring high paying jobs back to america. He did not do that. The planned has been open since 2013. We covered it when they opened. Apple has a promotional video published in 2013 showing off the new factory. Its not clear if the president was making that up or thought it opened yesterday. He talked about it for a long time, wanting more manufacturing in the u. S. It definitely didnt open yesterday. We do need more. Thank you, scott. 5 18. A story trending for you that may make you rethink taking your next trip to big sur. It made a do not visit list on a popular travel site saying big sur has been overwhelmed by a surge of visitors in recent years and, lets face it, getting into and out of big sur has limited access from highway 1. Some of the popularity is due to the hbo Series Big Little Lies which made the bridge a popular destination out there. The beginning sequence driving over that bridge and you see reese witherspoon, all the big actors. It does get crowded during the week. Im saying dont visit because people get out. Its risky. And then you dont have much space to get out and take pictures and people are doing kind of dangerous things. Its big sur but narrow roadways. Its maybe better to head there during the week without all the tourists and stuff. Well have some nice weather today. We turn our attention to the weekend where well see High Pressure moving in once again. That will give us more sunshine but we need the changes that are ahead for next week. By next tuesday and wednesday we could see the storm system dropping in. This will have an inland track that could limit the amount of rain we see moving in so that will be a big factor on the timing and how much rain we get. There could be another chance of rain moving in by next friday which people will be traveling by the later part of next week and our models still disagree on how much rain we could see. Showing up to two and a half inches of rain where we see the orange shading while another model shows about a quarter inch of rain and most of us not getting much. Theyre all over the place. Ill keep you up to date as we get closer. Temperatures in the upper 60s for today and tomorrow. Low 70s for the weekend and the winds pick up on monday before the rain moves in. I dont want to get into the politics of things but just here and excited to be a partner and to be a part of this huge keynote everybody else is waiting in line for. Reporter its called a conversation with president barack obama. Were told he wont take questions but the audience is anticipating hell discuss social issues, his views on the impeachment hearings and the president ial election next year. Earlier protesters got into the event and voiced frustration saying everyone should be included in the conversation. President obama, of course, supported by the dreamers, immigrants children, while the Trump Administration working to end the program. Now later today back here live this is quite a deal. Apparently some of the people said they paid about 2,000 for the tickets to get in. Some people said they had a coupon. Theyre getting in for about 5 500. Expensive thanks so much. We are just learning one of the frontrunners in the democratic race pledged to visit the bay area next month. Former Vice President joe biden plans to attend three fundraisers on thursday, december 12. They will be in San Francisco, south San Francisco and palo alto. Now taking a live look at capitol hill this morning, two more witnesses will face lawmakers today in the inquiry into President Trump. Things are getting set up right now. Todays list of witnesses includes david holmes, the state Department Employee in ukraine. He overheard a key phone conversation involving Gordon Sondland and the president. Today in the bays tracie potts is live in washington with a look at what we can expect today. Reporter there was something going on and they didnt understand why the aid wasnt going through. So that challenges the story of President Trump and others in the administration that ukraine had no idea there was the aid was on hold when they had that phone call. Apparently according to those emails and coopers testimony yesterday, they did. Todays final day of public testimony begins this morning with fiona hill. She was the Top White House expert on russia under National Security adviser john bolton. Hill is expected to share concerns that she and her boss had about President Trumps personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani directing ukraine policy. Fiona hill is going to be a powerful wrapup witness because she doesnt take any prisoners. Shes tough and strong and compelling. Reporter also testifying diplomat david holmes. He told lawmakers he overheard a phone call between President Trump and European Union ambassador Gordon Sondland about investigations in ukraine. The answer is yes. Reporter sondland testified yesterday that even though the president said no, there was quid pro quo pushing ukraine to investigate the bidens in exchange for foreign aid. We all understood that if we refuse to work with mr. Giuliani, we would lose a very important opportunity to cement relations between the United States and ukraine. So we followed the president s orders. Reporter and he says Vice President pence and secretary of state mike pompeo knew what was happening. President trump says sondlands testimony actually proves his case. I think they have to end it now. Not only did we win today, its over. Reporter not quite. Todays witnesses could bring further evidence linking money for ukraine to a political favor. Okay, you will hear this in about 20 minutes but weve gotten a look at the Opening Statement for fiona hill today. She will be testifying saying that russia is the real problem here. She was the white house top expert and refuses to participate in what she called a fictional narrative driven by partisan politics that ukraine is the problem and not russia. More on that in just over 20 minutes. We will stream the hour of today in the bay on our app. Well continue our newscast and you can also find it at nbcbayarea. Com. Scott mcgrew will join us during the checks and balances segment at 5 45. In a few hours teachers plan to rally outside of schools in dublin. Following that development because we know the dumbarton bridge is a connector with the facebook campuses. They already have a lot of traffic going there and we have a lot of traffic. I spotted this just before you get to the curve. That will mean additional slowing. We already have the slowing because of the metering lights are on. Thats about it from Alameda County and in towards San Francisco. The crash south 101 looks like its cleared from the roadway. The fremont crash is on the shoulder and a nice opportunity to try mass transit today. Unless you dont want to wait out in the cold. Bundle up. An opportunity to bundle up. There you go. Break out the winter gear. It will be nice and look at how warm it gets for the inland areas. Actually above normal. The bay will see high temperatures up to 67 and the coast, 63 degrees. Kae mike traffic tease it is 5 44 on this thursday morning. Lets get a live look outside in san jose. A chilly start here and across the bay area. Well talk about the trend for the weekend and a storm that may impact your thanksgiving travel in about five minutes. The nimitz, a smooth drive. Were going to talk about an adjustment you can make. Its an important reroute to talk about as we have a fuel spill. Another day of testimony in the impeachment hearings, but the biggest testimony likely came yesterday. Good morning to you. Today well hear from fiona hill, trumps top adviser on russia. Hill in her Opening Statement will push back against the Conspiracy Theory held by some on the far right that it was ukraine and not russia that interfered in the 2016 elections and then well hear from david holmes, the one who overheard the conversation between Gordon Sondland and the president talking about the deal they were trying to hammer out. Now that seems redundant considering Gordon Sondland himself already testified about the call and he was on the call. Sondland is the u. S. Ambassador to the European Union appointed by trump, and one of the closest people in the ukrainian deal. Heres sondland saying they were, indeed, making trades for an investigation. Was there a quid pro quo . As i testified previously with regard to the requested white house call and the white house meeting, the answer is yes. Sondland recounted conversations he had with the president including the one holmes overheard about the deal and a later conversation where sondland said the president himself said i dont want quid pro quo. I want nothing. Heres the president recounting that conversation. I want nothing. I want nothing. I want no quid pro quo. Tell zelensky to do the right thing. Then he says this is the final word from the president of the United States. I want nothing. This has led to a new defense. There was quid pro quo but the president didnt want it and r forbade it. The calendar, the i want nothing statement happened in september when the white house learned the investigation had started. That was months after the president held up the aid. That he did this is established fact and then in july the trump zelensky call where the president asks for that favor also established fact because the white house released the transcri transcript. They learn congress is investigating the whistleblower. This is where the president says he doesnt want a quid pro quo and then the military aid is given to ukraine two days later. Out live to washington where the hearing room is already filled with photographers. Fiona hill will be the first to begin testimony.
