The women were traveling in a threevehicle convoy, some headed to arizona, others to visit relatives in chihuahua when they were ambushed. The area has long been plagued by cartel violence. The family says they never expected to be targeted. They were uncalled for, and they violated multiple policies just on the optics. Reporter miller has been charged with one count of child abuse without great bodily harm. A felony. Miller was working as a School Resource officer at this school faces on the video, and there is no audio its not clear what led up to the incident in late september you can see the student who has not been publicly identified appears to kick the back of the deputys knee while hes on his phone, then paces around the room with her hands in her pocket all of a sudden, the deputy grabs her by the neck and throws her to the floor, then flipped her over and pulls her arms behind her back before picking her up and throwing her into a small room hes now suspended without pay the arrest comes just days after another Broward County deputy wag s charges for banging a teenagers head on the ground during a Violent Arrest near a high school after this latest incident, ole that video is hard to watch so this apparently happened back in september why is the guy just being charged now . When they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. The massacres victims were all u. S. Citizens from a settlement about 70 miles south of the arizona border. Some were caravanning to a wedding nearby at a place known as le baron colony, another spinoff Mormon Community similar to theirs, founded in the early 20th century as an offshoot of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints. The settlers fled to practice polygamy, to have multiple wives, forbidden by the mainstream church. Kerry sanders is in the Channel Islands off the coast of california, exploring a wildlife mystery, the disappearance of a rare fox found nowhere else in the world, and kerry and a little friend, two friends actually, good morning reporter good morning. Well, this is an exciting morning. I am here with Laura Shaskey with the National Parks service, a wildlife biologist whos hold ing this adorable cutie, a Channel Island fox, the smallest fox in north america, and the fastest recovery of any species that almost disappeared. 20 years ago, there were only 15 of these foxes left alive, and the fear was they would go extinct. Here on an island off the coast of california, they are thriving santa rosa island, part of the Channel Islands, a stunning 53,000 acre National Park. We took the 2 1 2 hour boat ride from the mainland and hiked with the National Park biologists to where the Channel Island foxes live the island fox is 1 3 smaller than the mainland gray fox at about 12 inches and 5 pounds, its the size of a cat the biologists trap the foxes to check their health our remote cameras recorded the curious creatures. How do you lure them into the traps . We actually use a loganberry lure it actually smells like loganberries. The loganberries that we eat. Yes, its a very strong smelling scent, very sweet. If it wasnt for the loganberries, scientists might never have discovered how few foxes remain 20 years ago, they found the population once in the thousands had dwindled to only 15, and by 2004, they were listed a federally endangered species the question was, why were they disappearing so you had a mystery on your hands. It was like csi, we definitely had a mystery what did they discover, what was causing the death of all of these animals, well, they looked up in the just released documentary back from the brink, saved from extinction. The foxes were being attacked from the sky. Actress claire danes narrates a new predator had arrived. The foxes were being preyed upon by the golden eagle so before the golden eagle took over the air waves here, who was the king and thats another missing piece of the puzzle. Bald eagles had been missing from the islands for several decades. Missing. Missing. Why did the majestic bald eagles disappear, the chemical pesticide ddt had seeped into the waters around the islands, the fish bald eagles eat was contaminated, in turn, so were they, generations of bald eagles collapsed, absent the bald eagles that eat mostly fish, Golden Eagles that dont eat fish moved in. Number one on their diet, the Channel Island fox the intruding Golden Eagles had to be captured as seen in the documentary. Once captured they were relocated, giving newly hatched bald eagles their rightful place. Conservationists say the now banned ddt is no longer an issue in the waters around the islands, where there had only been 15 Channel Island foxes, 20 years later, biologists estimate there are 1,800 today. Yes, theyre at the doorstep of extinction, if it had not been for human intervention, they would be extinct today. Beyond the foxes on the island, is there a lesson we can take away from this. Remarkably well, you know, off the coast and then just hug the coast of florida heading south and today is right now down in biscayne bay at times going down to about 30 feet. We are told that the green sea turtle today is in an area that turtles like to go to its a very popular place, so, you know, its about a 90 miles drive on a boat, if you were going to from where she was released down to biscayne bay, but doing well, thriving and every time she surfaces, that little antenna pings her location, and folks are obviously still following her progress online.
