It has just mros blossomed insi. Pete, i know you were just asked to move from the fire line because you were too close . Reporter yeah, well, we were positioned at geysers road in geyserville. Were about as close as you could get, which is pretty far up on the fire line. You could see the fire burning clearly, the kinkade fire. It started roughly at about 9 30 p. M. Overnight near the clover dale area off kinkade road in that area. That fire is burning very strong here in geyserville. We had to move because it kicked up. We sent some video earlier when we arrived on the scene. You can see the images there of the fire. Its starting to grow a lot when it comes to the acres. We had to go down the road because it was starting to shift over the hillside where we were to the right of us, starting to shift a little bit. When we saw fire officials, were standing when they started heading out, thats when we head out. Were now going more towards highway 128 to try to find a safer area away from the area but growing in the area off geers road. Pete, we also know theyre evacuating so many areas there. Youve seen a lot of cars, a lot of people leaving the area. Its also in the middle of the night. Reporter right. By the time we got here, i saw maybe a handful of cars off highway 128 or in that area. Not many. We saw some there. That was also about an hour before we got up to geysersville road. Theres no one in the area. Theres a mandatory evacuation order. People do have the choice to stay if they want to. We havent seen many cars. There are a lot of wineries. Those are some of the areas were seeing where the actual fire is burning. Not many homes that we can see at least at this point. Pete, weve seen the size of this or heard about the size of this fire growing rapidly. Talk to us about the winds as you were out there. Reporter i didnt notice much about the winds when we arrived but obviously they picked up a little bit. I dont know the Miles Per Hour but it was enough where we were at the fire started to move over to the hillside. As many of us know when you start to see that black smoke, you know its fresh and that was our key to book it down the road, get away and out of harms way especially when the fire officials make their way down the hill. Find yourself a very safe location. I know youll give us continued updates throughout the morning well. Thank you, pete. Well check back. We want to show you this time lapse video showing how fast the flames were spreading. The kinkade fire is moving past geyser peak at this point and from this video you can see how the winds were really whipping those flames along rapidly. The winds most likely going to be a problem for a while in the morning hours. Lets check in w meteorologist kari hall with how fast theyre blowing and how long they will last. Here is a look at where we are seeing those fireea conditions, hidity about 21 and once again it started late last night andtinuess we go into the m with temperatures now at about 57 degrees and gusts at 40 to 60 Miles Per Hour. We are seeing the flames spreading to the south and west of that area closer to geyserville. Unfortunately, we know theres a higher population in the area. We could possibly see that moving all towards the south and west because our winds are coming in from the north and east. And weve seen in parts of the north bay where we see the bright colors here and our wind gust map where the highest winds are going to be, but its mostly for the elevations above 1,000 feet. In the hills we are getting the high wind gusts and then it also pushes down into parts of the valley as well as around Sonoma Valley and napa valley this morning. We are going to see the winds at about 25 to 30 Miles Per Hour as we go throughout the next several hours and then were at 3 30 and the winds start to ease up a bit and the rest of the evening we will see calmer wind conditions. We do have the red flag warning, have seen humidity as low as 5 in the area. In the valleys and along the coast 35mileperhour winds. As far as the rest of the bay area the red flag warning will continue, humidity around 14 and some of the gusts up to 35 miles an hour. Well be watching the santa cruz mountains. Theres a lot of dry brush, dry fuel and we are going to see the gusts up to 35 miles an hour. As we look at the rest of the bay area today our temperatures start out in the low 60s. At 10 00 were in the low 70s and it will be a very warm day with a lot of 90s for the inland valleys as high as 93 degrees today. Well see it gradually cooling off. Ill have another look at the forecast coming up. Mike, youre starting off with the north bay. Were on early today. 4 07. We do still have that light traffic flow. This is not a problem. Thats the camera shot, the northern most of our shots here. Novato moves smoothly. Theres your typical view. A slow roller clearing from 280 and thats about it from anywhere south of the bay bridge. To the north bay where all the activity is, power was shut off again yesterday. Watch the signal and then up here is highway 128 and 101. In the area with some closures watch out for geysers and just to the north of river rock casi. That is the area to avoid because of the evacuation. Those folks got the alert earlier. The local traffic where he is closer to the fire mostly clear. 128 is seeing a little more traffic flow, again, as the sun comes up well see more activity as well. Well track that. Avoid the area to the north and east of river rock casino. Back to you. Im sure a lot of those people heading to safer ground. Mandatory evacuation orders are in effect right now and several centers are being set up in Sonoma County. A list of the locations we know about so far, Windsor High School on windsor road is serving as an Evacuation Center and Healdsburg Community center. Small animals are allowed at the shelters but large animals should be taken to the fair grounds in santa rosa. Weve posted all the Evacuation Center information online. People who had to evacuate overnight. A look at some of the posts. This photo of the flames in the distance. They wrote they are safe and keeping a close eye. Evacuations are in effect for northern healdsburg and geyservilgeyser vil ville. It includes river rock casino. The fire started after 9 00 last night outside the geysers near kinkade road and mountain road. The mayor mccaffrey joins us live. This is one of the evacuation sites set up from overnight. Mayor, talk to us about whats going on there right now. Are you seeing a lot of people come there to the Community Center to get away to a safe place . Good morning. My named is david hageley, but thats okay. Were really acting more in a support role at this point. Our emergency Evacuation Center is open, were partnering with the red cross, so were ready. One of the unique things about the Healdsburg Center is we can accommodate small animals. The larger animals need to go to the Sonoma County fair grounds. We have room for livestock trailers. As of right now we have four in healdsburg. We dont anticipate that to change. For any information what ive been directing people to do is go to the city of healdsburg website and then follow all of the social media sites on next door, facebook, what not. Thats where youre going to get the most Accurate Information for healdsburg as opposed to the county. But at this point were ready to help our neighbors to the north. So you mentioned the red cross is there assisting in the efforts as well. What will people find, amenities, food, water, blankets . People are just getting up out of bed and leaving. Yeah, and a big thing also is charging devices. We have cell service, water, coffee, snacks. Everything you would have but were ready and thats the message we want to get out. Were ready to help people displaced from the fire or having to evacuate. A wonderful resource. David hagele, thank you for joining us this morning. Right now we want to talk more about the wind conditions out there causing the fire to spread. Are we going to see a break anytime soon . It will be a few more hours. This is the critical time frame that we could see the fires spreading rapidly. Well continue to monitor these conditions as we go through the day. Red flag warning continues until 4 00. More on that and the rest of the forecast up next. [ ] you want a freshsmelling home, but some air fresheners use heavy, overwhelming scents. Getting you up to date on the breaking news out of the north bay, a large outofcontrol wildfire is burning in Sonoma County called the kinkade fire. It has grown to more than 10,000 acres, very rapidly in a matter of seven or so hours and weve seen it take off in the last few hours. We have evacuations in effect and the evacuation warning includes river rock casino. Everyone who lives in those ars are being told to leave. This is outside of the geyser near kinkade road and burn mountain road. We want to check in with pete suratos, out there live on the fire lines. They moved you along. The fire is spreading so rapidly, pete. Reporter yeah, we actually made the decision as we saw fire crews up there on geysers road near that fire line as close as we could get. Off highway 128 and i want to show our viewers right over my shoulder we were up the road near this area where you could see that fire, the kinkade fire, is burning out of control. The last time was 10,000 acres so it continues to grow by the minute as we keep talking about it. There it is right there. Im not sure if you are able to show the video when we were up there, if you can show that, let me know. You can really see the flames from where we were at. We were up there on geysers road. We dont have video so were showing you where were at right now for highway 128. Now that fire picked up so much. It was going on both sides of the hill as that wind picked up that we came down the road to get to a safer area where we could still show you where the flames are burning. Obviously when youre talking about these areas they have been cleared out because its dangerous. They have the mandatory evacuations in place. Obviously still up to the individuals to evacuate. We show you some video of the fire as it picks up near geysersville. Of course the big question are the weather conditions. Were not feeling much wind but getting some of the ashes falling from this fire but up near geysers road where we were at near where the flames are that wind picked up enough. Enough to come down to a safer location. Were waiting as far as whether structures are threatened. Also waiting to get more information if there are any injuries. As we just showed you, the kinkade fire near geyserville where were standing is burning in the area. I can see the glow behind you. Is the smell of smoke pretty thick in the air there . Reporter definitely, yeah. Its not as thick as it was up there. We had to wear mass bes during the past fires we covered but once you start driving into this area obviously talking about the size of the fire you smell the smoke. Youre seeing the ashes fall from the fire though were quite a distance away. Thats where even at that point the black smoke coming from that fire heading our way. Pete, take care and well keep checking with you. The one thing weve been talking about are high winds. I can see the ash that can carry embers. Great concern with those winds that will last throughout the morning . At least the next six hours. Winds in the Higher Elevations, and ive been monitoring the peak wind gusts around the bay area. These are some of the numbers ive gathered around healdsburg. We are seeing gusts up to about 48 miles an hour. St. Helena gusts of 54 and middletown, 69mileperhour gusts. To the east bay gusts over 30 to 35 miles an hour. In bell month about 45 Miles Per Hour. So we are still dealing with the gusty winds throughout the rest of the morning, looking at high winds especially in the north bay and some of the Higher Elevations above 3,000 and 4,000 feet gusts in the areas 50 to 60 miles an hour. If you have high winds that come through in short bursts were not seeing it as a steady wind but it does every now and then pick up and that will be the nature of the wind well see. By 4 00 were seeing things greatly improve and we see the amount of humidity in the air as well. Looking at the humidity levels when you have very low humidity in the teens and 20s it makes the embers spread more rapidly and allows the fire to grow as we go into the day. Look at that, santa rosa starting out the morning at 77 degrees. Its 77 in half moon bay. What happens the wind flows over the mountains, it warms up even as it descends into the valleys. Its going to be a really hot day today reaching into the low 90s. Up to 92 degrees in concord as well as upper 80s and low 90s for the peninsula, San Francisco in the upper 80s and up to 92 in novato. We will still have very dry humidity and also a high fire danger going throughout the day. Ill have more on that and whats ahead coming up. Heading over to mike youre looking at an early drive. Take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza where we dont usually look at this for another five minutes. We are on early to talk about the power shutoff and what ended up developing which was, of course, the fire really kicking in. Right now were looking at the bay bridge with really light traffic and anywhere south of there and to the east of there just fine right now on your typical commute. I do see a little sensor slowing across and heading north. There are some zones with construction crews that should be clearing in those spots. Well keep tracking that and also portions of the north bay having experienced the power shutoff so you will have local signals. Watch highway 12 once again today and farther up here as we look, were focusing off 128, red winery. We are looking at the area ariver rock casino where the fire is on the kinkade fire. Thats the evacuation zone. Inaccessible off 101. Do be careful in the area and avoid the area if you can. Healdsburg again, geyserville and the areas north of santa rosa. The big concern, of course, is the fire itself. Back to you. Thanks, mike. 4 25 for you right now. On today in the bay were tracking breaking news for you. That fast moving fire growing in the north bay. Thousands are without power. Pg e proactively turning off electricity because of high fire danger. A live report up next. Look a door to another dimen. Oh, no, just a bag. Train insane, or remain the same. Phew well never totally figure them out. But we do know what makes them happy. Meow mix. Forty years and still the only one cats ask for by name. 4 28. We are watching the kinkade fire in the north bay right now. On top of that thousands of people in the north bay also waking up without power after pg e followed through with a new round of controlled outages. Heres a look at most ly dark santa rosa. Today in the bays kris sanchez with more on what we need to know. Kris . Reporter hi there, marcus and laura. I dont want to bury the bad news as big as it is today. The next wind event could mean an even bigger power outage area. Right now the map of where the power is out this morning. This power shutoff in effect right now. 179,000 customers in 17 different counties for us, the north bay, parts of San Mateo County and the foothills. Pg e is expecting the wildfire danger to pass this afternoon and, of course, kari and our weather team has been talking about the red flag warning passes. The difference pg e is using a plane with infrared technology. We believe we can just look for any obvious damage locations, vegetation blowing into our right of ways and impacting our facilities that will give us an advanced notice to station and mobilize repair crews. Reporter as we saw last time the per outages arent over with the flick of a switch. They take a couple of days. What mike inouye was talking about in his traffic report, when power goes out, Traffic Signals go out. Many of our counties are very dark
