A red flag warning takes effect later today. Pg e still has not made a final decision on whether to cut power to tens of thousands of bay area homes and businesses. It will announce its decision during a News Conference today at noon. If the outages take effect in San Mateo County, fewer than 1,000 homes are expected to lose power, mostly in remote areas, but including parts of woodside and lahonda. In the north bay roughly 7500 napa county customers may lose power. It covers eight towns including calistoga, st. Helen in a and lake berryessa. Sonoma county, 28,000 homes and businesses may be impacted, santa rosa, healdsburg and sonoma. Today in the bays jean elliott shows us the preparations under way. Due to the previous power outage we learned you have to stock up on ice and if you like to cook your food you need propane. Reporter ian mccarthy is preparing for pg e to turn off his power in santa rosa to try to prevent wildfires. He says he can adjust at home but it creates chaos on the road. Pretty much a nightmare. You come to every light its stop and go and if youre coming off the freeway its backed up about 40 to 60 cars sometimes and everything just stacks up around town. Reporter pg e says it will decide wednesday morning if it will cut power to 189,000 customers in the sierra foothills, the north bay and the peninsula. Power shutoffs could begin as early as 2 00 p. M. Wednesday. An effort to restore power would begin after winds die down thursday afternoon. The utility says its working with the chp to test infrared technology that would allow crews to inspect lines at night, something that would speed up efforts to reenergize lines. Pg e is also looking ahead to another dangerous wind event that could trigger a third power shutoff this weekend. So it depends on the timing between the events here at this early date it looks like theres enough time before the next one that we would reenergize. Reporter frustrated customers say pg e should be on the hook for their expenses. So yeah, i definitely feel there should be compensation. Reporter jean elliott, today in the bay. Pg es ceo is reminding everyone, reimbursement for expenses and losses are not currently part of the policy when it comes to controlled power shutoffs. Some north bay schools are changing their schedules due to the expected power cuts. In santa rosa that includes Maria Carillo high, Rincon Valley middle school, Santa Rosa Accelerated Charter School and Hidden Valley elementary. All will end class early today and plan to be closed through tomorrow. If you are among those trying to track outages like the last time around, maybe you were among those who encountered a crash of pg es website. This time around the utility is vowing to change that. They say the website is upgraded and while its supposed to allow better communication with customers, early tests on the new and more powerful version have not gone perfectly. When they tested yesterday, it crashed. And of course the red flag warning will extend to a lot of areas that will not lose power, that includes the east bay hills. Many homeowners have gotten the message clearing away dry brush from the property. Berkeleys fire chief says some homeowners are struggling and have to be prepared. With love, california. Skyline we re in a microclimate weather alert. Welcome back, everyone. A live look from our San Francisco san bruno camera this morning, we have declared that microclimate weather alert this morning. Great concern with the high temperatures were having and the dry conditions that remain. Kari has been talking about it all week about what we can expect and today is the day we see a lot of the changes. We are going to start to see the winds picking up throughout the day, our winds peak tonight and continue through early tomorrow morning, so as we get a look out there in San Francisco, once again, at least we do have some very nice conditions to start out the day, with some all clear skies. If youre about to head out, maybe going to the fruitvale b. A. R. T. Station youre going to feel the temperatures in the upper 50s and then it leads into low 70s by 11 00, and at noon were at 73 degrees. Going through our high temperatures, this is much warmer than normal. San jose should only see a high this time of year at about 74 degrees. Were up to 86 today. Now our record is in the low 90s, so i dont think well set a new record today, but it will still be very warm, and were also going to see some low 90s in pittsburg today. Danville reaching 90 degrees, while oakland will see a high of 84. Some low 70s in half moon bay. Redwood city reaching 85 degrees and in daly city 75 will be the high. We could see a few low 80s in parts of San Francisco, mostly some 70s, and in the north bay, expect highs up to 93 in santa rosa and in napa. So lets go through the time line of the winds and when we do expect the winds to increase. Mostly were starting out winds at about 5 to 10 miles per hour. 8 00 were starting to see winds in the north bay increasing right at noon, so thats when the red flag warning for the north bay begins and well see those winds sustained and higher gusts up to about 30 miles per hour. We could see some gusts in some of the Higher Elevations reaching 50 to 60 miles per hour. And we do still see most of the high winds along the north bay and the coastline as we go into tonight and early tomorrow morning, but notice in the valleys in spots like san jose, livermore, the winds are not going to be that strong, and so we are going to see another wind event where the Higher Elevations are going to see some really high winds and low humidity, but this time around, we do have some very hot temperatures, reaching the low 90s today. 93 degrees tomorrow, and then we will start to cool off, going into the weekend, some major cooling headed our way for sunday, and that may also come around with some more high winds by the end of the weekend. So gusty winds today and tomorrow, San Francisco look how hot tomorrow reaching 87 degrees there, and then coming back to the 60s by sunday. Mike, youre tracking a couple of spots for the early commute. Some are your usual suspects like this one for 101, your flashing lights, looks like a lot of activity, part of that is because the headlights coming toward us, flashing appearance because theyre traveling past some trees as well as the overpass. Northbound the flashing lights are on the right, the cones are on the left, and folks are funneling down through periodic breaks as some crews start to clear north of willow. Thats typical around the peninsula side and not enough to trigger the ssor changes just yet. The rest of the bay youll find them here and there but the Altamont Pass is another usual suspect for the morning commute and westbound is moving smoothly coming into the area of livermore but it is eastbound as you get up toward greenville, where we have a crash reportedly blocking your slow lane. Its a 40,000 pound big rig blocking that lane so it wont be cleared until a heavyduty rig truck there, careful if youre headed out of the area but its counter commute, should be okay. Were between 15 and 20 minutes out of brentwood and byron down vasco road southbound toward 580 and the early commute moves nicely and highway 4 out of antioch, pittsburg and bay point. Out of the walnut creek interchange and caldecott, no problems for contra costa county, a great drive. The bay bridge toll plaza we have a few folks waiting on the left approach. We have only one cash lane still blocked but look at that early backup there. Back to you. Thanks so much, mike. 4 50. Fire fight fears in Southern California continue to.
