We have a red flag fire warning, wednesday noon until thursday at 4 00 p. M. For the northeast, south bay and parts of the Higher Elevations of the peninsula. Were looking at the top gusts in the mountains, 30 to 55 miles per hour. Lower elevations, a lot different. Gusts on average, about 20 miles per hour. So, there will be that big contrast in the wind. But what really makes this wind so dangerous for us . We know about santa ana winds in southern california. Our version of that is a diablo wind. Anytime we get a dry north and easterly wind. The drier air moves over mown diablo, where it gets its name or other Higher Elevations in the bay area. As the dry air descends down the mountains in the valleys, theres an important weather process that happens. That air compresses. Air molecules move back and forth against each other and creates friction and the air dries up and heats up. We can do the demonstration at home to demonstrate how friction works. Take your hands, rub them together. Doesnt take too long, five to seven seconds, and you start to feel the heat on your hands. Its the same process as that air moving down the mountains. It just heats up really fast. And thats why we have the fire danger with us. So, heres the deal, 10 00 p. M. On wednesday into thursday morning, well see the best chance of the highest gusts in the north bay, where we could get up to about 50 miles per hour. On the extended forecast, well see the wind calm down, friday and saturday. We could see another wind event here by sundays forecast. Notice the dependence. From 87 on thursday, down to 69 in San Francisco, on sunday. For the inland valleys, at 9 3 n thursday. And then, 78 on sundays forecast. We wanted to alert you of the wind event on sunday, as well. This heat and air, its all about the friction of the Higher Elevations. And thats why it heats up. Thats why its so dangerous. Beginning tomorrow night, thats when we have to be alerted here.
