Some of the damage we had. I dont know how to advance my own slides. Sorry. So, this is the kind of thing im talking about. This is a tree branch that has blown into a line. If that line is energized, you would have an arc, a spark, and a potential ignition of wild fire. This is another example of the same thing. The wire down based on the tree blowing over. When sumeet gets up hell have a if you more pictures andell you mor about this. So, each of these has the potential to cause a significant fire. I said last night it was an extremely difficult decision for us to make. We know it would and did cause hardship for many of the people were privileged to serve and continued to cause hardship for those who are still without power tonight. Given the choice we face, the choice between hardship and safety, we chose safety. And safety will always be our first choice. As far as where we are tonight, life is returning to normal for many of our customers. Weve been able to get the lights back on for hundreds of thousands of customers in northern and central california. In fact were about 96 restored here in the bay area and about 89 systemwide. And we expect to be about 98 complete by the close of business today. But we have a little more work to do. And no one, including me, is going to rest easy until the last customer is restored. And again, sumeet will give you a little more detail on that in a moment. Before he does, i have a few other comments i would like to make. For those who remain without power, i want to ensure you we have an army of personnel working on this, inspecting our lines, and reenergizing them. 6,300 men and women in the field supporting them. Weve got to make sure those lines are in good repair before we energize them. And we have to make sure there are no tree limbs or other vegetation on them before we can energize them. Our Emergency Operations Center Remains in pull capacity. Our website is functioning correctly, and Customer Care is operating with augmented staff with a average wait time of 30 seconds. I want to thank all the teams of the difficult work under difficult circumstances. Everyone is focused on the same thing, getting customers restored as safely and quickly as possible. I want to make a comments about how we can get better at this kind of event Going Forward starting with communication. This is the area where we were not adequately prepared for the event. So, we will work to reinforce our website and call centers to handle a much higher volume of traffic than we were able to in this event. Heres our goal to provide you with accurate, timely information about whether and when customers will be shut off. I will say if youre a customer who would potentially be affected, we will contact you directly. If we have your contact information, you will get a call, a text message, and email. Direct communication is best and preferred. If we dont yet have your contact information, no better time than right now to provide to us. You can do than on pge. Com. Or ill give you a phone number 8667436589. Let me also add thrks Public Safety power shut offs with driven by the weather and weather patterns which we know are dynamic. While our alerts will indicate approximate timing, we will adjust that timing if the weather changes. We may narrow the scope as weather approaches with various adjustments to our grid. So, all this is to say is we ask your patience and flexibility as we minimize impact while prioritizing safety. Let me also say a word about narrowing the scope of future events. We have and will continue to narrow the shut offs using all the tools at our disposal and well get better at that as will the tools. These tools include more weather stations so we have more precise local weather data. We now have more than 600 of those. Were also continuing to add sectionalizing devices on our system. These allow portions not affected by adverse weather tore remain in service. And we have added about 200 of those in 2019 alone. As a final point, i would like to speak to how we can help our customers and others prepare better. We offer our customers a wealth of information on how to prepare themselves. We have a dedicated safety website, safetyactioncenter. Pge. Com and more information is available at www. Pge. Com psps. We urge everyone to have an emergency plan, emergency kit, supplies of water, medication, and nonperishable food. Wild fire risk is real. Earthquake risk is real. And the potential for power shut offs is real in california. Well prepare to get better with local and federal agencies. I want to thank them for their support so far. As i said last night, the future of power shut offs is not a future i desire to live in, but its a future we must be ready for given the conditions and risks we face. With that, ill ask sumeet to provide an operational briefing. Youve been listening to a live news conference. That is the ceo of pg e bill johnson giving us an update. Ing interest what he was saying, almost stating his case justifying pg es response of why they cut out the power the last couple of days and relating it to whats happening in Southern California saying if they can choose between hardship by cutting peoples power or safety, pg e will choose the safety rout. Right. Saying it was an extremely difficult decision to make to cut off that power but ultimately decided safety was the rest route to take for them telling us theres an army of workers in the field checking power lines, restoring power, and saying they are going to try to do a better job when it comes to communication. The website, for example, that had just a series of problems and their phone lines and getting in better contact with customers who may have questions or concerns. And one also notable moment of the news conference, bill johnson saying he thanked and wants to reach out to government officials, the same government officials who were very critical of pg e including governor newsom, including the mayor of san jose. Hes saying he wants to reach out to them and thank them for their support because this will in theory happen next year and years from now. Well continue to follow this and bring you updates as it continues. Moving along, today in the north bay which saw the longest outages, many sonoma businesses got to hang open signs. What about this weekend . Well get the detailed forecast and tell you why i think saturday is going to be better than sunday coming up in a few minutes. Is the bay area Power Outages getting you thinking about solar. You might be surprised what we learned today. Solar Power Systems sometimes do things and sometimes dont in a black out. Im chris chmura, nbc bay area responds next. During the black out some families with solar panels were sitting pretty. But not all of them. Chris chmura joins us with why some have power and some didnt. Pg e cant cut off the sun, can they . Its not the sun. Its what some people think about the Solar Systems and what they do. Some Solar Systems were useless when the power went out. Take a look at the q a. Will solar panels work during a black out . No, unless you have battery storage. Those batteries are optional. They can also be expensive. That means many of the states 926,000 solar homes dont have that battery. So, they were left in the dark despite their rooftop panels. At solaria, located in oakland, its ceo explained an existing system can be retrofitted. I would call your local installer and see what it would cost to put in batteries on top of the system that you have to have back up. Most systems, Solar Systems, that are installed, you can get batteries and back it up and avoid this in the future if your power gets cut. That is really good to hear, isnt it . You can actually retrofit that system. Now, i should caution that those batteries, they do have some limitations. Theyre not usually going to power the entire house. Thats interesting to know, right . Because you think im going to plug it in and the whole house is going to run. Yeah, that is not the case. So, let me show you Something Interesting here because the typical battery is only wired into a couple of key appliances and a few plugs. This is an Interactive Chart from tesla. It says the battery will last one day 17 hours and 15 minutes. These are different appliances in the house. You can turn things on like the washing machine and doing the dishes, the ac and pool pump. Watch how that drops to 12 hours and 17 minutes. If you have one of these batteries, you need to be judicious. Conservation is key if you want it to last longer than 12 hours and7 minutes. If you have questions, give us a call, 888996tips or online nbcbayarea. Com responds. Sounds like its expensive. It can be thousands of dollars. Not cheap. I wonder the past couple of days people end up paying for that peace of mind. Well see. I think there are a lot of people out there who put these solar panels on home and think im good to go. Just assume. Thats what we thought. Were learning a very important professor. You should be professor chmura. Thats my wife. Thats true. Thank you, chris. All right, chris. Thanks. It was a special day and luckily in many ways the time that the earthquake hit, we were lucky. A lot of people left their work a little bit early that particular day to get home to watch it on television if they didnt have any a ticket to go to the game. That is true. Good to see major jordan as well. Al michaels was on the air. We can remember game three of the world series when the quake hit at 5 04 p. M. First thing i thought was that there were some kids in the upper deck just above us who were pounding bats on the concrete above us, the floor. The realization came and this isnt about baseball anymore. This is about life. Players were stunned. We were all stunned. It wasnt just that day. It was the several days after that, recovery and hearing the stories. We have a good documentary here. Bay area revelations airs this sunday night at 10 00. If you cant get to a tv, dvr. Its worth your time. If you werent here in the bay area, this is a great historical look back of how we went through it and recovered from it.
