They say probably if you continue to have power now, youll have power in the future. Giving you a map looking at the area where a brush fire started in moraga on merrill court. Weve been on the fire lines talking to evacuees since shortly after it happened. We came on air at 3 00 in the morning. Today in the bays bob redell has been on the front lines. The firefighters got this under control considerably quick. No structures were damaged, bob . Reporter correct. About 140 homes threatened, laura. Were down the hill off the fire line at st. Monicas where the people were evacuated. Many allowed to go back home. It was about 40 acres behind that neighborhood. As you can see it scorched the area. Primarily brush, some trees. Bulldozers out there a couple hours ago and we presume are still out there cutting lines of containment. 40 acres burned, 70 contained. The fire is out. What they want to do is get lines around 100 of that area burned. This is some video of what the fire looked like when it started shortly before 1 00. You can see why the Police Department went in there and told people to get out. One thing the Fire Department did say the people who lived there were very cooperative and credited them for getting out of there in time given the fact at one point this was a very dangerous situation. Here is the fire captain who was on the frontline. The activity that was going on and with the crew that initially started on this side of the fire, the fire activity and fire behavior was very dangerous and put them in a situation it burned their hose up. Given the number of resources i had working on my division, i was very blessed to have the number of people and the crews that i had. We were able to put in a lot of good work. They put in about 5,000 feet of hose and. Reporter that fire captain pointed out the fire had only been burning about half an acre to an acre and quickly jumped. The winds he felt gusted up to around 30 miles an hour. Somewhat significant. It was bad enough to drive that fire. He credits the fact they had 150 firefighters out there, many had been on stand by in the area. The fact they had so many resources and were able to get there so fast he credits why they were able to keep it contained to the 40 acres without destroying or damaging any structures. No one was hurt. This happened, as i mentioned, a little bit before 1 00 this morning. There was no power on in that area so this was not an issue of wind knocking down power lines but they dont know what caused the fire and that will be part of the investigation. This morning were taking a close look at young students, how they could be hiding their habits in plain sight. Vicky nguyen is here and youve got devices here that every parent should see. Yes, good morning to you all. You might think this is my new smart watch or my pen that i normally bring onto set. But no, there are vaping devices actually hidden inside these products are super easy to buy online and in stores from a range of companies, just add a vaping cartridge and theyre ready to go. Its a brand new worry for parents and teachers who are dealing with hidden vaping on campuses across the country. This morning were heading to a school to see who can spot the vape take a close look. This student is outfitted with vaping devices but you cant see them why . Theyre designed to look just like Normal School gear. For sale online and in vape shops. Giving kids new ways to hide their vaping habits anywhere they go, including school. Its rampant. I think every administrator who has a middle school and high school are grappling with vaping issues. Overseeing the Berkeley District in new jersey. Its virtually undetectable we dont know if a student is vaping in a classroom. Would you know what to look for . Were taking over a classroom at this high school filled with student volunteers, thank you, guys, and were going to plant these hidden vaping devices, and bring in teachers and parents and see just how well they do at spotting the vape. I get to work. Heres one thats designed to look like a black marker stashing stuff all over the classroom. This guy looks like a usb, its not, its a vape and on students too. Looks like shes wearing a regular hoodie, but underneath a vaping device. Some vapes even look just like School Supplies. Looks just like a pen but the vaping device is inside and you can write with it. Time to bring in our volunteers. Im vicky nguyen with the today show. Nice to meet you. Whats your name . Miss moretti. We have outfitted this classroom with vaping devices, look high and low. You ready . I think im ready. One minute. She spots a couple of them. That device, but breezes right past most. Before time runs out. Three, two, and that is time. How many of you had a vaping device that she spotted. Three items, not bad how many of you actually have vaping devices but she missed 11 of the 14 items we hid. Its scary. Because it could be just in plain sight. Some teachers spot a couple of the more obvious ones. That looks like one too. Reporter but most miss the harder to find items like this watch. Sam is wearing what looks like a smart watch, but you press this button, this part comes out, you can fill this with nicotine and its an ecigarette. All five teachers missing this vape backpack. This one has a hidden device right here in the strap. This is the first thing i would think is a camel back, getting water through it. Reporter and the hoodie. I think its ingenious marketing and im a little frightened. This could be happening right under your nose. Absolutely. It could be happening in my house. I have a 15yearold so now, no hoodies reporter even this school aid, a retired Police Officer missing the watch and pen. Very disheartening theres so many out there that the kids can get access to. Reporter what about parents . Will they do a better job spotting the vape . I think thats a vaping device. Not this group. He was writing with a pen but inside the pen oh, got me. Now ive got to go home and check pens. Reporter parent after parent also mistaking the decoys for vapes. I was pointing at this one, but that one looks fairly suspicious as well. Thats just a marker and they confuse the real vape for regular items. What did you think this was didnt think to look at that, a market, eraser or highlighter. The most any of our volunteers spotted, just five of the 14 items we hid. Thats 36 , a failing grade. Its very, very scary. Reporter an eye opening experience for both teachers and parents. If you have to hide something, then theres something wrong with it. Scary to see how easily they can hide Something Like that. Parents need to be more invasive in their kids spaces and actively engaged. Reporter we reached out to the Vapor Technology association, they dont approve of underage use of these types of devices, working to bring the age to 21. I brought these items. This one looks like a marker, and thats what people would mistake it for this is the highlighters we were talking about, hoda. And as you know show that watch, thats crazy. You pop it out right here and it tells the time. So you can easily see that uhhuh. Theres a digital readout. Right this is crazy, the hoodie. Nobody got the hoodie. Craig, ill return your hoodie later. Its insane its like a vaping thing in here. But if youre a teacher in class wouldnt you see a kid whos like even if theyre you would think so but they break off into study groups. Thats what teachers are telling us youre dealing with 30 kids at a time it makes it so much easier and when you have a tiny pen like this you can do your homework with. Its crazy. A real big challenge for teachers and parents and talking about antitobacco campaigns, check if your district has one like the one we were at. Have conversations with the kids. Portions of alameda county. Pg e says about 200 thousand homes and businesses had their power cut in phase two of the shutoffs. This is in addition to the homes and businesses already without power in the initial phase one shutoff yesterday. All due to fears of fire danger. That didnt stop this brush fire that sent hundreds of people evacuating from their home. There was no damage to homes. It did burn at least 60 acres. Kari . The red flag warning continues until 5 00 this evening. Its for the elevations above 1,000 feet. All of this in the red shading and that continues today as we are expecting more high winds along with some really low humidity. All this happening against the backdrop of prince harrys battle with the press over privacy invasion, saying theyre causing his own wife mental anguish as they did with princess diana, the mother he lost when he was 12 years old. Prince harry said he shut down all his emotions for 20 years and eventually sought counseling to deal with his grief which is why the cause is so important to him. If your home still has power at this point you no longer have to worry about losing it. Here is a look at the recently updated outage map. A lot of them are still without power however triegt nright now. The second round got into midnight and it including contracosta. 200,000 homes and businesses had their power cut in faze two. This is all in addition to the hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power from the initial shutoff yesterday. About an hour ag they confirmed there are no more power shutoffs planned. But the outage is due to fire concerns and that is exactly what we had, a fire that didnt stop this fast moving brush fire early this morning in moraga. It sent hundreds of people evacuating from their homes. Luckily there was no damage to homes but it did burn at least 60 acres. Earlier this morning, evacuees just grabbed what they could. It was scary, there was smoke everywhere, it was all red, im kind of freaking out, im not going to lie. I saw the lights and to the right was a huge plume of orange smoke going up and i said we have five minutes to get out of here. Kari hall has been tracking the conditions. Were seeing gusty winds as we look at this live view. The flags are waving there. We have seen gusts around that area to 30 Miles Per Hour, but the red flag warning is for the Higher Elevations and these areas are very dry, the winds have been picking up and we have a higher concern of quickly spreading fires. So looking at the top wind gusts, 77 Miles Per Hour gusts with 43 Miles Per Hour sustained. Elsewhere it is mostly 20 to 30 Miles Per Hour up to 48. So going throughout the day we still have the rush of the wind once again higher up, but not really mixes down to the valleys. So were going to see the breezy conditions as we go into at least early afternoon. Then by tonight we are expecting the winds to start to calm down, shift direction, and that could bring in slightly more humidity. Going throughout today were seeing High Temperatures going up to 81 degrees in antiyak. Im going to reemphasize a point a lot of us share right now we should be able to talk about Mental Health in the same way we talk about our physical health, going to a workshop or therapy should be seen the same as going to a workout or a personal trainer as we have a gym for the body we need a gym for the mind and we need to start thinking proactively about our Mental Health so we can renew this muscle, refuel this mind muscle and make it feel relaxed and rested as well. I had ive talked about my anxiety on the air, ive been very open about it and i read a tweet today because its World Health Day from somebody who said i recently went on anxiety medicine im so glad i did. For a long time i didnt want to go on anything because i thought it was an admission of me being crazy. The truth is you wouldnt live with a broken leg for ten years, so why exactly. If youre struggling with something mentally would you not, if its a personal decision, i have since gone on medicine as well now at this point i cant believfor almost 20 years i suffered in silence. Its the best decision for me. You must hear a lot of stories about this. There are different measures and steps we can all take. One of the first is lack of sleep. Its such a big thing. Quick question, how many hours do you get a night 6 1 2, 7. Never more than 6. So seven is meant to be the amount we need. Seven hours. Why does it start with sleep . It starts with sleep because thats the time when your body and mind are resting, refueling. So much is happening during sleep. Its not like you just switch off. So getting a good nights sleep. Instead of that episode, trade that episode and that show for an extra half an hour in bed and thats going to make a huge difference for so many people. What else lack of connection. I think being able to have Human Connection what i mean by that is not just being in a bar or being around a group of people, we can all be around people and still feel lonely but it means a one to one, face to face coection. Everybodys on their phones thats not what youre talking about. Put away the phones when were in a one to one environment. Do you find as you get older forming those connections, cultivating those relationships gets more difficult . Youre right. It takes a lot more effort but i know this for the people ive worked with, just meet one person a week that you love, just meet one person, once a week, and it could absolutely change your week. What else another thing is the lack of selfesteem. This is how we feel about ourselves and how we talk to ourselves. One of my favorite ones in this regard is making sure that we find a way to learn something new everyday it could be learning a new word, learning about a new place, learning about a new cuisine, whatever it is that entices you. When youre learning youre boosting your selfconfidence and youre boosting your morale. Whats something people can do, taco day, margarita day, today is Mental Health day whats something people watching right now, who have never thought about this topic, whats an item somebody can do today . This method of spot, stop and swap negative thoughts whenever you have a negative thought, and we have them around work a friends and family, whatever we do, start to spot those thoughts and see when they come up. Stop going to those environments, those places that give you that feeling and then you want to swap you want to upgrade it to something higher ill give an example lets say you have a negative thought that you spot, i feel like i dont know what im doing in my life, i feel stuck when you have that thought, youre browsing through social media and seeing everyones perfect lives. Limit the time but the swap now im going to use that time productively, pick up a podcast or a book, and now im going to engage that time productively to actually swap for something higher. Jeez. If your home still has power at this point, we talked to pg e, and they have tentatively said it looks as if you will keep your power. What youre looking at at here is an outage map. The utilitys second round of planned power shutoffs got under way at midnight. This interestingly had very little to nothing to do with the power. So what youre seeing now is the power outage details. Pg e said 200,000 homes had their power shut off in addition to the hundreds of thousands homes and businen the north bay shut down in the initial shutoffssterday. An hour ago they confirmed there are no more planned, however the outages due to porn concerns that sent hundreds of people from their home, as i was saying earlier, not apparently related to Power Outages because it was already shut off. Firefighters worked quickly to work on that. When i went outside it was pretty scary, it was smoke everywhere and everything was red, i was kind of freaking out, im not going to lie. I saw the red lights and to the immediate right was a huge plume of orange smoke going straight up and i said we have five minutes to get out of here. Everybody is safe, that fire is out, i know you should keep your guard up, some are not seeing any winds and others are. It is based on your elevation and how high you are.
