Jimmy thursday night we had two shows in a row pretty exhausting, right but, whatever, its fun. I had a good time. So lorne goes, are you going to go see Adam Sandlers premiere of his new movie uncut gems . so i go, of course. I love sandler but i dont know if we can do it i mean, im gonna get out late i have double hes like, you got to come. Youre my date so ill go with you. I said, okay. So, great. So i finished the show its all good. Joaquin, were all having fun. Its great and then we split. I get in the car i go down. Takes me awhile to get there i get to the thing they take me to my seat. Lorne is already sitting down in the middle of the theater with ben stiller and chris rock and having a good time im like, guys [ laughter ] i came here to support sandler, obviously. But who am i cant sit next to anybody its like, lorne and ben and chris rock and then like sandy or whoever. But then theres strangers. So i just sat by myself. [ laughter ] [ audience aws ] end of the thing, i go, you got to be kidding me. I just kept looking over at lorne like cant believe this guy. You know so im sitting there and then the movie is about to start and these two people get up and they walk away. And i dont know whats going on and who sits next to me but adam sandler [ audience aws ] so he sat next [ cheers and applause and i go i love it. I go, whats up, man . Hes like, how you doing, jimmy boy . I go, you dont have to sit next to me you can sit next to lorne or wherever. Hes like, no, i want to sit next to you. So i watched the movie with adam and he is unbelievable in this movie. He is fantastic. Its called uncut gems. Its directed by the Safdie Brothers steve oh, yeah jimmy dude, theyre great. Yeah, of course. Do you ever watch it if it comes on tv . I do love that film im amazed by what David Fincher did with that film but i avoid it now, because it only highlights the shape im not in anymore [ laughter ] jimmy heres some behind the scenes footage of photos of you guys you and brad going at it. [ cheers ] that actually but that actually is when i its the first punch of the movie and i hit him in the ear and he says, he fincher came up to me and said, hit him. You know, connect with him somewhere. And i didnt know what to do and i hit him in the ear, and he says in the film, he goes, ow, why the ear . [ laughter ] jimmy dude, that was real . Yes, that was real. Jimmy you boxed his ears wow, you hit him look at you guys you guys were babies we were children. We were children so thats [ audience aws ] jimmy what a cute picture. I know. Jimmy what a beautiful picture. David fincher, a great Makeup Artist as well as a a great director jimmy exactly. He is. He is talented it was very special jimmy speaking of special, iing to segue into motherless brooklyn. Congrats on this film. This has got the work that you put into this. First of all, lets just say, your acting is phenomenal. You got great reviews. Vanity fair, i saw, gave you a great write up and Rolling Stone as well, said youre props to the movie and your acting its great but you produced this. You directed it. You wrote this when did you hear about this story first . Its funny. I read theres a wonderful novel of the same title that i read around the time we were making fight club. So, like 20 years ago. Jimmy youve been working on this for 20 years but, but in a way i turned it into this, sort of, a 50s sort of l. A. Confidential detective sort of a film jimmy it does have that chinatown type of vibe to it yeah. But the main thing that drew me to this book was the character in it. He is not your bogart, nicholson, sort of detective hes a very, very unusual character who has tourettes syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder. And this condition makes navigating the world very difficult for him. People treat him very badly. Jimmy yeah and he has talents that flow from his condition that make him a kind of secret weapon for the detective he works for, bruce willis but that kind of part is kind of what i tend to really like to lean into jimmy theres not many parts like that out there that you can just grab a script and go, ill do that no one is writing it you had to do it for yourself. Yeah, i wrote it for myself jimmy yeah good thats what youve got to do thats what youve got to do [ cheers and applause thats what you do right jimmy put the work in. But it was a great experience its a big, new york, epic movie. And i got this cast. Alec baldwin and willem dafoe, bruce willis [ cheers ] jimmy bruce willis, willem dafoe is great. Gugu mbatharaw, who is this wonderful amazing actress. Jimmy shes great. And Bobby Cannavale jimmy how was alec alec is an animal jimmy he is. As everybody knows. Jimmy hes a beast hes a beast. But the thing is, like, over in this building, alec, you know, hes one of our great comedians and great satirists. Jimmy yeah you know what i mean . But we came up on alec, you know, glengarry Glen Ross Alec jimmy hes a good actor. Hes a great actor and coffee is for closers only, right jimmy hes amazing and i think that hes, in this film, i think it reminds you with a shock of like the force of pushing you in the back of your seat, that he is really one of our great dramatic actors. He is really, really phenomenal in this film jimmy he said the same about you. He was here and we were talking about it and i go, what are you doing . He goes, im doing this movie with Edward Norton [ light laughter ] its a great film. Wait until you see what edward does hes going to get an oscar hes going to get an oscar wait until you see what he does. I go, okay, cant wait to see. Did he say, i will, too, of course but thats a given. [ laughter ] jimmy ill win an oscar as well, yeah long overdue. Jimmy hes fantastic in it, though hes great hes truly fantastic in it. Jimmy you were saying he yelled something before you he has you know, there are people who are kind of method actors who go down within alec is sort of the opposite of that he narrates his process so jimmy out loud yeah. In very dramatic scenes, he will, take after take, hell go hell finish one and go, agh, dont cut the camera nobody move, nobody move strap in this is going to blow your fing minds. [ laughter ] and you kind of go, is he talking to me . Who is he talking to . [ light laughter ] hell go, dont anybody move. Dont touch the camera do it again. Stay right there dont you move dont you move bang hell go jimmy he says bang zoom jimmy what i think hes winding himself up hes putting himself in here jimmy i love it. But the outtakes are great. See the movie first, but later ill show you the outtakes jimmy next time youre going to come back for the outtakes i want to see [ cheers and applause how does one its a great movie. How does one get thom yorke to write a song for them . Because i want to do this. [ light laughter ] do you know thom yorke yes, ive known thom a long time i went i saw radiohead in a a little club in new york called irving plaza. Jimmy you saw radiohead in irving plaza yeah, back in the day it was before ok computer had come out and they came out and played the record and it was one of those moments like, im not hip i am not i dont end up at happenings when people say like, oh, yeah, it was happening. I am never there i am always, like, hearing about these things 30 years in new york and that was one of the only things that ive ever been at where i went, i was there jimmy i was there i was at a happening jimmy guys, i was cool, yeah i was cool. I was in the winners circle, like, for once jimmy so, radiohead. Anyway, weve known each other a long time. And i felt, you know, thom and our generation, i think, has really hes been a songwriter who catches sort of the emotional, you know, longing. But also kind of just the terror and the dissonance of the modern world right . And their music has such beautiful, melodic, anthemic stuff. But then also just so much fracture in it, right . Jimmy yeah and i my character in this film, thats him in a a nutshell hes kind of a sensitive and funny and thoughtful person. But he has this brain that will not turn off and can and the word play. I asked i said to thom, look, i want a ballad. I want an oldfashioned sort of jazz ballad that reflects this and i thought he was going to say no, because like everybody in the world wants thom to write music. Jimmy yeah and like two weeks later, he emailed me at 6 00 in the morning i get this track called daily battles. I sat on my bed, in the dark, literally crying it made me cry the first time i heard it jimmy what a great line, though daily battles. Yeah, its evocative. It actually affected my view of the film i put the phrase daily battles into the film, because its very much about, i think, people getting through their own struggles. And the need to have empathy with each other. And take care of each other in our daily battles. And its an amazing thing. You ask people you know and love to work with you. Its a little nerveracking, because you dont want that to go badly jimmy yeah, of course. And when they deliver something that authentically moves you and makes it great, its just thats the dream. And i was, like, 7 years old they gave awards to, like, the other students in the class for, like, best posture or, like, balance beam technique and then they gave me the award for best attitude. Jimmy so what would you do when you went on the recital i have a video of it, because you guys have to see it thankfully my godfather was there and he took a video, like, on vhs but i was i had, like, crazy stage fright as a kid like, even now, i still get nervous. Im going to throw up, like, just being in this chair [ light laughter ] im really nervous so there was a point in the recital, we did this whole routine. I was kind of you could tell i was starting to get nervous. But then there was a part where all of us had to get in line jimmy mmhmm and we all do a cartwheel and then move. And move on and go to the back of the line. Jimmy okay so theres this video clip that i want to show you. I brought it, because its so funny. It gets to my turn like, i start seeing the girl in front of me do a cartwheel, and you can start seeing the, like, the panic in my face im, like, tugging at my little, like, leotard. And im like getting really nervous. And i realize i dont know how to do a cartwheel. Ughter ] and im supposed to do a a cartwheel. So you see me turn to, like, my instructor being like, i dont know what to do. And she goes, you got to go just do anything. And then you see me in the video go, anything . And shes like, anything. So and then you have to see what i do, because its the most horrible move all time. [ laughter ] its, like, not even gymnastics jimmy heres never before seen footage of alessia cara tempting gymnastics. Take a look at this. Here i am look at the panic. The panic, panic, panic.
