Gary gulman is back joining us [ cheers and applause so, we got a great show for you guys before we get to that, a canadian woman was hiking in the woods recently when a wild cougar started stalking her. So she did the only thing that made sense she scared it away by playing metallica on her phone [ light laughter ] which brings us to a segment away call the kind of story we need right now. [ cheers and applause seth this is dee gallant dee was hiking in the woods near her home in British Columbia when something didnt feel quite right. As she put it i just suddenly felt like something was watching me. Seth so she turned around slowly and saw just 50 feet away from her a cougar standing perfectly still and ready to pounce so dee did what any normal person would do. She took her phone out and made a video. Theres a cougar watching me right there. Bad kitty. [ laughter ] bad kitty. [ laughter ] go [ laughter ] ill fight you seth in the time it took her to make that video, i would have [ bleep ] my pants, changed them, and then [ bleep ] the new pair [ laughter ] this is the kind of story we need right now americans are being bombarded with one bad situation after another. And were paralyzed by it. Meanwhile, this woman comes face to face with an actual cougar. And shes like, lets go. [ laughter ] im impressed as hell with dees courage, but the cougar was not. He just stayed. And he just stared at me for the longest time and i decided i needed to do something a little more intimidating seth a little more intimidating so what did she do growl . Stomp her feet scream for help . No, she opened itunes. And she selected the track dont tread on me by metallica. [ laughter ] because as dee explained, i thought it was the noisiest thing on my phone that would probably scare it, that was also the message i wanted to convey to the cougar. [ laughter and applause imagine. Imagine. If you can, imagine seeing a cougar and your first thought being, whats the message i want to convey through song . [ light laughter ] in case youre not familiar with the song dont tread on me, its the one that goes like this da da da da [ laughter ] seth and then it goes. Da da da da seth and then, it hits the chorus and its like da da da da joo jo da da da d joo joo [ light laughter ] seth by the way, if you would like to download this song, you can find it on the spotify playlist, songs to scare off a cougar with. [ laughter ] so dee pulled up the song, held her phone in the air and hit play and as soon as the first few notes ran out rang out, the cougar turned around and darted back into the woods. Can you imagine being that cougar youre like, oh, great, theres a lady, this will be easy. And then, you get closer, and youre like, oh, its a canadian, even easier. [ laughter ] and then, youre like, oh, [ bleep ], its a metalhead, never mind. [ laughter ] naturally, as soon as the cougar was gone, dee headed home. No, im just kidding dee finished her hike. [ laughter ] she finished her hike playing the same song on repeat the whole time for safety. [ light laughter ] all the other predators in the woods are like, i dont know what animal makes that noise but im not finding out. [ laughter ] when dee got home, she posted her story on social media. And it quickly went viral. So viral that a few days later, the lead singer of metallica, james hetfield, called her to say he was glad she was okay but dees no dummy, so she said, how do i know this is really you . And he texted her this selfie. [ laughter and applause this is the kind of story we need right now [ cheers and applause our world is filled with people unwilling to take action in difficult situations people who see danger and refuse to do what needs to be done. But not dee gallant. Shes a role model for our times. And if you dont agree, ive got three words ill fight you. [ laughter ] seth this has been the kind of story we need right now. And this week she will host saturday night live with musical guest, taylor swift. Please welcome back to the show one of our favorites, Phoebe Wallerbridge, everyone [ cheers and applause seth how are you im really great. Seth and this is you had a wonderful week yeah, exactly seth the emmys were just a delight. I was lucky enough to see you right after you won your first one. Yes seth there was sort of a backstage bar. And im standing with bill hader and you came in the room and everybodys very happy for you. And bill said, how are you . And you had an emmy in your hand and you said, im really well. [ laughter ] and i thought that was a very honest yet also very british way of responding to how very well, thank you. Seth how your night had been going i mean, obviously, it was beyond your wildest dreams to win three emmys. Yeah. I mean, i still, even hearing you say it, that makes me go, no, that didnt happen. That just happened in my head. [ light laughter ] seth was this a situation where looking back you you were just happy to be there, and then it went so beyond yeah, and we had a whole gang like, the team that makes fleabag is quite small and wed all come out for it so, it just felt like we were the kind of, naughty kids trying to get in through the back door. [ laughter ] and then we got there, and then we were like, oh, no. Whats happening this is terrible. I feel like we were stealing them [ laughter ] seth and everybody reminds you you know, they say, even if you dont think you have a chance to win, you have to write a speech, but no one says, write three speeches [ light laughter ] so at the end of the night, you really have to show your chops as a writer to come up with new stuff to say yeah, that was that was a horrible moment when i was like, what if . And theyre like, you dont want to tempt fate. And so i think just repeating the jokes [ light laughter ] seth yeah. Like, wow, really its so blurry what actually happened that night. I mean, it was it was amazing. Seth i think, again, you you looked very glamorous that night. And then i think there are people that think there is something glamorous to writing i dont know if you were young when i was young, i thought of writing as this really glamorous endeavor that yeah. Seth you do with a, you know, coffee and in a or a whiskey. Seth cozy room and just [ light laughter ] and i thought it was really lovely that you posted this photo. This is on your way to the emmys. Yeah. Seth you were writing. Yeah. [ laughter ] seth which is yeah. No rest. Seth no rest no rest for a writer. Seth i think this is such a helpful thing to young writers, is even Phoebe Wallerbridge was late with a script is that accurate, if youre writing . [ light laughter ] oh, oh. That is not the first time either [ laughter ] very much. Yeah, that was honestly, i closed we got the deadline just as we were pulling in, and it was like [ deep breath okay. Lets go. [ laughter ] seth it just speaks to, again, the complete it seems like people are on the top of the world. You have so little power that even on the night of the emmys, people were like, where is the script, phoebe . I know. I know it actually and its kind of it was i was writing the end of the book of the scripts thats coming out. And i was writing all of these like emotional bits about the people who had, you know, really influenced it. And so i actually got myself really riled up before i went there, cause i was like, my director was just such an amazing guy. [ laughter ] and just go there. So, i was really i was really in the right place its yeah, i mean, its up up to the line seth and that is so youre writing, sort of, this is a collection of all the fleabag scripts thats gonna be for the yeah. Seth now i would assume then after you win three emmys, the publisher probably says, hey, you want to rewrite the ending . cause i mean, you really did add on fantastic postscript to the entire thing. What . What do you mean seth well, the book, i feel like now, like, in the part of the book that you have the fleabag scripts, i feel like you should add also, right as i finish this, i went out and won three emmys. Oh, no. That would be amazing. Seth yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I mean, i could as i was finishing it, i was like, and im on my way to the emmys. [ light laughter ] but yeah seth i know you had said that this was the end of fleabag. And it certainly has as wonderful an ending as you could ever want for a piece of television but ive also heard you say that maybe years from now, you might revisit the character. Is there something yeah, i quite like the idea of coming back to her when well, me, when im 50. Seth right cause i feel like she would have had, you know, more life then, and god knows what she would have got up to and shes seeing a character like that in her later stage of life i think is exciting but i cant i think for now, shes been through enough. Seth yeah, shes [ laughter ] we got to let her go. Seth lets let her have some rest yeah. Seth welldeserved rest. Snl this week, youre at the very beginning of the week yeah. Seth is this a show you had any sense of growing up in england . Yeah, but only really through youtube and stuff. I mean, everyone was sharing all the skits and the clips and everything, but we didnt it was never aired in the uk so i didnt know the madness that it is and how you create it and how its written and how fast you know, we just thought its a sketch show, like that you have time to prepare for. Seth right [ light laughter ] and it turns out you dont. Seth you really dont. [ light laughter ] i mean, because at this point, again, so its tuesday night you have a show on saturday, and its safe to say, i know from experience, you havent seen a single word yet. You havent no. Seth yeah. No. [ light laughter ] i mean, when do they do it [ laughter ] yeah, ive heard that todays the kind of calm before the storm. Seth yeah, i think tomorrow im gonna check in with you tomorrow just to see where at on the show yeah. [ light laughter ] can you just help me can you just help me with it seth yeah, ill try a little bit. Yeah you did you did do fleabag one last time. The stage show that was based on yeah. Seth in london. Was that again, sort of, for a piece of closure yeah. I mean, i had said it was gonna be the last time in new york seth yeah. And then seth and i saw it there. And i paid through the nose for tickets, cause i heard it was the last [ laughter ] yeah, right. Exactly. That was the plan yeah, and then we said we werent gonna do it again. And one of the most beautiful theaters in the london in the london [ laughter ] in london seth do you guys call it in english people we called it the london seth oh, yeah. Okay, great. Ttjust to be clear seth thats a slang i didnt know so you know which one it is [ light laughter ] and its such a beautiful theater and i loved it so much that we sort of thought it felt really good to go back. cause we started at Edinburgh Fringe festival. And to end up in the west end, it just felt like a really lovely full circle but it was it was and it was the first time i really felt the end so palpably. I mean, i remember on the last night, and this sounds really cheesy, i dont normally go in for this sort of stuff [ laughter ] but but on the last night, and i re, ialed been playing this character on and off for about six years, and on the last night, it was like the last four lines of the play, i actually felt her leave me seth wow and i was, yeah vom, right vomit. [ laughter ] but i really i really did i felt something happen. I was like, oh, ive got to let go now. And then i was like she was like, byebye [ laughter ] im going, you know, to australia now. Seth yeah. Jump into another woman. Seth shes doing a whole run in sydney. Yeah yeah, some other actors writer there hes just going [ laughter ] what is that . Seth ive heard that you travel on Public Transportation in london and obviously, youre very youre popular there and people do take videos of you. Yes . Yeah, thats the only weird most of the time people dont i mean public transport is kind of fine, because no ones concentrated on anything thats going around them. Seth right theyre just head down in their own personal hell. [ laughter ] and but but, yeah, its the secret filming of you. Seth right and youre in your own personal hell as well. Its like a little bit exposing. [ laughter ] but so, that happens there so thats due a bit less there seth do you do anything it seems to me that theres a unique opportunity for you, if youre getting secretly filmed to fleabag a glance right to camera i mean, thats dream for anybody whos filming you. [ light laughter ] i know and times ive done it to those people. They werent the people filming me theyre just like [ laughter ] im like seth im just checking. Giving them a little [ laughter ] and theyre like, no. Seth i am on twitter. Will you travel . Will take advantage of our beautiful subway system right here in new york city . I mean, ill have a go. Seth yeah. I love the subway seth do you like this . Yeah. Seth is the subway better than the tube . Is it well, i think its just got that seth the tube is the subway in the london. [ laughter ] we we, uh we in london have well, i mean, i have a relationship with the tube in london, which is, you know, weve been together for a long time seth yup but ive seen its sort of grubby edges whereas here, its i just know the subway from movies. And its so cinematic. And i love it and im sitting you know, when i go on the subway, im the person whos like, were in the movie of our lives in new york. [ laughter ] and this is amazing. And they are, like, beautiful rats [ laughter ] and its just, like, gorgeous. Seth is it similar are the rodents similar in both Public Transportation systems . [ light laughter ] no, we go more in for mice, i think. Seth yeah. Were little mice in little edwardian jackets seth yeah. Playing little [ laughter ] seth little tea. Were playing us in and out with their little violins. [ laughter ] seth basically, when you get on yeah seth they play little songs. [ laughter ] we actually have the only rats in the world that have middle fingers, which is amazing. [ laughter ] thats not true seth no, it is thats not true seth theyre like little i mean, you have to like really look but they or really offend them [ laughter ] seth yeah, you really and its like, they dont quite manage, but like, theyre like the rest of their posture is very much like that. So youre like, oh, i see what youre trying to do here they have to grow one seth yeah. Over years, theyre just it was like darwin did a whole study about how only here did rats develop middle fingers. [ laughter ] they had all the attitude and nothing to do with it. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] now seth thank you so much for being here thanks for having me. Seth it is always a delight. Congratulations. Oh, this is very exciting, too taylor swift is gonna be your musical guest. Yes seth and that is such a nice combination of people. And she came and saw your show in new york or london . Yeah, she did, in london. Seth thats really cool. Yeah, yeah. It was amazing she was seth she came back days afterward and yeah, she did we hung out. I hung out with taytay. Seth thats really great thats so amazing. [ laughter ] and taytays a fan, because she actually tweeted when it was first announced. She was the one. I know. Seth she threw this out. That was amazing. Seth and how exciting you are. So, thats great i know, shes so cool shes so lovely. Seth its very cool. His debut novel, the water dancer is available now please welcome to the show, Tanehisi Coates, everybody. [ cheers and applause seth how are you im good. Im all right. Seth this is very exciting to have you here this is your debut novel it is seth youve had a lot of accolades before this. The National Book award winner, macarthur genius grant awardee but now, Oprahs Book Club that is the real deal right there. 2019 oprah what is it like when you get the call from oprah . Um, i would give back the National Book award. [ laughter ] i would give back someone calling me a genius. [ laughter ] to get that call from oprah. Seth yeah. If i had to, like choose. No, its absolutely incredible it was surreal seth and uh, yeah, and obviously, so helpful you i cant imagine theres anyone in america right now who is better at getting a book out to people that might not take a look at it otherwise no, i was joking when your producer called. And i said, like, shes the best point guard in the world. [ laughter ] seth yeah. This is great i mean, i just you know, we live in a in publishing, people think theyre good at selling things and they think, oh theyre just going to do this and that but oprah has its not just the fact of, you know, her profile, but the enthusiasm. Seth yes you know, and im looking at her, like wow, is the book really that good . [ laughter ] seth yeah, ive never ive never heard oprah say about anything, this is okay. No, no, no. No just okay [ laughter ] no seth uh, so you started this in 2009. I did seth youve done lot of different kind of writing in the time between when you started and when you finished it longer essays. Youve done reporting. Youve written comic books did any of that help with writing a novel . Or was that just stuff you did and every time you came back, it was exactly as hard . Uh, it was always pretty hard seth oh, yeah. It was just for different reasons, you know . I think, like, there was an exchange i think in many ways the book helped me with comics. And then the comics would help with book. And you know, it was always an interplay, which was weird because this was an invisible thing, you that was happening, you know, over here. So, um, i think they both helped each other seth and so this book is about hiram. Hes a slave, and he manages to jump around into different places using conduction, which is sort of a magical power i love that jump around. Seth yeah, he jumped around. Yeah, ive been looking for a way to say that. [ laughter ] thats it, jump around. Seth im very good space time. Seth people say, if you could put in a word with the macarthur genius people. [ laughter ] but what brought you to use this sort of, this magical device for your main character . Well, its a lot. I mean, obviously, you know, we talked about before, its in my bones, from having been a comic book reader as a child but in fact, when i went to do the research, of the time, magic and, you know, this belief in spirituality and you know, supernatural forces, its actually in the literature of the time and so, it just it felt appropriate. It felt natural. It didnt even feel like i was doing a weird thing. You know what i mean seth sure. I mean, toni morrison, beloved is a ghost story seth yeah. You know . So, i didnt i didnt feel, like i was, you know pulling in some extra thing seth you one of the things that unlocks the power in hiram is memory. Yes seth and remembering his mother and it was just this beautiful quote in here that i wanted to read for memory is the chariot and memory is the way. And memory is bridge from the curse of slavery to the boon of freedom. Can you just talk about what was important for memory for you in this book . And why that, ultimately is the key for the character . I think in much of my nonfiction work, ive been thinking and just working towards memory i mean, thats what reparations is about, for instance its about remembering and i think so much of what we do, so much of how we act, you know, in the world, is based on how shall we say, an edited notion of what our history is and what our, you know, National Memory is and so hirams a character who wants badly, you know, like all enslaved people wanted to be free, but he cant actually achieve that emancipation without remembering something that he would much, much rather forget and so, in many ways, i think its kind of metaphorical, you know, for the country that hes living in and that were living in right now seth his mother is a key part of this book. Your mother was very important in sending you down the path of being a writer in a different way. [ light laughter ] seth she made you she made you write as punishment yes seth yeah. [ laughter ] yes, yes, yes seth so really it backfired on her it really did seth yeah. I showed you, mom [ laughter ] seth uh, how was that what were the things you were getting punished for and what kind of writing would she ask you to do . Oh, man, i was a terrible student. [ laughter ] i mean, just you know, i remember my mom going up for a Parent Teacher conference. God, i dreaded those but she went up to a Parent Teacher conference in second grade and the teacher said, tanehisi did everything, but stand on the table. You know i was like, like, next time ill stand on the table, too, just to [ light laughter ] but, she would just you know you know, i had to come home and write these essays, man, about what i did, and why i did it and what my plan was for the next time [ laughter ] and you had to, like get deep. Seth yeah. Like, what were you thinking in that moment [ light laughter ] you know what i mean and it was actually great prep for being a writer seth sure. You know . Seth i mean, when did you did you have a moment of realization that you were good at this . I can remember [ light laughter ] well, heres the thing, yes, and then you would, like read something or meet somebody, and this repeatedly happen, and theyre just so much better. Seth sure. And so youre, like im not actually good at this. Seth yeah. You know what i mean . So, yeah there were moments, but, um, that tends not to stick. Seth yeah. You know . Seth but another thing, i dont know if you feel this way. Nothing wants to make me write more than when im reading something great. Yes seth and then when i sit down to write, all i want to do is read. Right [ laughter ] seth you know . [ laughter ] im like, you know what maybe ill just go somewhere where someones finished a story. Right, right, right, right. Seth as opposed to being here in the beginning of one. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah no, it makes you very, very aware of your shortcomings seth yes yes, yes. Seth you weve talked before about comics. Youve written some captain america. Youve had an incredible run on black panther. And you said, that comics and superheroes is actually, sometimes a better way to talk about issues that were facing issues like race and whats going on in the world today. Why is it that you think superheroes are such a good tool for that yeah, i think because theyre so outlandish and so extraordinary, people can feel unimplicated. And you actually can tell painful, difficult truths sometimes without outright saying it. You know im writing captain america right now. And its very much informed by the politics of whats going on right now. You know, im reading the newspaper, seeing stuff. But trump is not going to make an appearance in captain america. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] like, that would actually, you know, sort of cheapen it seth sure. To have, you know, cap like lecturing trump. [ laughter ] you know what i mean seth yeah. But the headlines are just great fodder you know what i mean seth its also, i do i think it speaks to the time were in that you could be reading a comic book, and you know, yo could be dealing with red skull and magneto. Right seth and if trump showed up, youd just say, oh [ laughter ] right, trump would be seth i didnt want this level. Right, right, right, right. [ laughter ] trump would break in, and be, like i dont believe this anymore. Seth yeah, right yeah [ laughter ] i dont believe this. Seth i want to go back to something believable right, right, right seth about a man who was frozen in ice. [ laughter ] right seth thank you so much for being here thanks for having me, seth. Seth congrats on the book. Its a pleasure seth its always so great to see you. Thank you seth Tanehisi Coates, everybody. The water dancer is available now. Caribbean . Bingo its actually pronounced caribbean. Seth oh, and i said . Caribbean [ laughter ] seth and that was . Wrong [ light laughter ] seth and dumb. [ laughter ] seth oh. Now i feel wrong and dumb. Hey, wally do you say caribbean or caribbean . Well, i know theres the movie pirates of the caribbean. Seth mmhmm. But then sequel is called pirates of the caribbean. Seth uhhuh. [ light laughter ] and then, of course, theres the third one, parats of the carburetor [ laughter ] but thats the best one, because its got johnny deep in it [ laughter ] seth i dont think that helps us out hey, buck. Do you say caribbean or caribbean . You know, i always forget how to say it. And then i have to sing the lyrics to kokomo by beach boys, in order to remember [ light laughter ] just give me a minute. Aruba, jamiaica, oh i want to take you t bermuda, bahama, com on pretty mama seth hey, buck buddy [ laughter ] key largo, montego, oh want to take you down to kokomo seth hey, buck [ laughter ] well get there fas and then well slo thats where we want to go way down to kokomo seth hey buck, i dont think the word caribbean is in that song [ light laughter ] i know. But it should be, though right . [ laughter ] seth well, i dont feel any closer to finding the answer to my question. Hey, ally, you like to travel. Is it caribbean or caribbean . Oh, i dont know. I was never very good at math. [ laughter ] seth well. Its not a math question its a vocab question. This might not help, but i can tell you that the square of hypotenuse of a rightangle triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the remaining two sides. [ light laughter ] seth yeah, that does not help but if youre not good at math, why do you have pythagoras theory memorized oh, me and pythagoras, we kind of dated for a little while. [ laughter ] actually, we just broke up seth im sorry ally. You dated the ancient greek mathematician pythagoras yeah, but we were really bad for each other ally, ally, baby, im sorry [ laughter ] i didnt mean to blow my stack at you the other night i had too much macedonian wine symposium. I lost my cool it wont happen again. [ light laughter ] you make me feel small, pythagoras this small i promised myself that no man would make me feel this small ever again yeah, i wont i promise i wont. Oh, i love you, baby i dont want to make you feel this small i want to make you feel big. This big i wish you did make me feel this big, pythagoras [ laughter ] you really do, but you made me feel this small. So were done. Ally, get in the van. No, you get in the van. And drive out of my life forever. Whatever. [ laughter ] [ car door slams ] [ car engine starting [ tires screech [ car crashes aww, dammit. [ laughter ] [ car engine not starting oh, come on. [ car engine not starting piece of [ bleep ] van [ laughter ] seth you all done over there, buddy yeah, ill walk seth all right well, it looks like were back at square one. Cripes, now i asked all the smartest people i know and nobody seems to have a good answer oh, wait a second. Oh, my gosh. Hey, baze. Youre our head writer could you its caribbean. Seth okay, yeah. But what if i caribbean its caribbean seth okay, yeah. But one time my grandmother to me that the word is caribbean [ laughter ] the pronunciation is based on the root word carib, a misnomer that invading colonizers use to refer to the group of Indigenous People they met there. Seth yeah, but about if i look, man you you pay me to write i have a mastery of the english language unparalleled by anyone in this room [ laughter ] if you had asked me before any of these idiots, we wouldnt have wasted the last five minutes. Frankly, this all should have been sorted out during rehearsal. You pay me to write. You dont pay me to participate in this whacky meandering nonsense, and this hey man, do you have the zipcar app on your phone [ laughter ] what . Yeah, well i just i mean yeah, some guy just hit my van and now and you want me to and you want me to rent you a zip car . Yeah, well yeah. Why dont you just take a taxi oh, cause you know, i actually found this perfectly good refrigerator. And somebody was just throwing it away, so ultimately, i dont care. [ light laughter ] i dont want to know your characters inane backstory. So if youll excuse me, im due for a vacation in the caribbean. Hey, buck, sing me out aruba, jamaic oh, i wann take you to bermuda, baham come on, pretty mama [ cheers and applause seth actually, i think we could all use a break. [ cheers and applause seth our next guest is a very funny comedian whose new standup special the great depresh premieres saturday night on hbo lets take a look. Millennials are so accepting of each other. And they feel safe coming out to each other in high school, even junior high. I have to be honest with you, in 1987, i didnt feel safe ordering a sprite. [ laughter ] this will sound nuts, but sprite amongst the men of my community was considered a womans beverage [ laughter ] seth please welcome back to the show, gary gulman, everyone. [ cheers and applause seth welcome back. How are you . Im terrific. Can i just say hello to Carol Burnetts grandmother. Seth yeah, thank you so much she al likes that. So this is a very funny special. Thank you seth but its also, it is about your depression, your anxiety. Its very honest yes seth what when did you realize you wanted to do an hour about this and was that a hard decision to make well, it was not a hard decision it was out of necessity. When i first started coming back to standup i was so anxious and sad. And it was so clear. Everything about me, my hands shook. I would bite my lip until it bled and my hair was wild i hadnt shaved. And it was clear something was off, so i had to address it. And the best way, the safest way with my personality was to make jokes about it so, it was it was sort of i feel, like it was blessed from the beginning to be honest with you. Seth and you brought people into this special. There are, obviously, most of it is you on stage, but you have conversations with your mom. Yes seth was that did she jump at the opportunity to be in this [ laughter ] did she have hesitation . She was dreading it and spent weeks scouring the house for it was, like she was preparing for passover [ light laughter ] which is a big thing for jews. [ light laughter ] i and then she kept asking if judd apatow could make her look thinner. Seth okay. [ laughter ] she thought it was an important element of your standup special. Sure yes yes. So, that was a thing, but i thought she came off, like the perfect mom. Like, if you were to cast a mom, she was the perfect seth yes i think shes going to get mom parts off of this special. Yes [ laughter ] i hope so. Seth but you this is serious. You actually considered retiring from standup based on how bad this depression was, this anxiety was. Yeah. I had retired from life. And then i was retiring from standup and then i thought about it. And it sounded so pretentious that carson retired, and Michael Jordan retired seth yeah. Gary gulman, i was giving up. Seth sure. [ light laughter ] i was throwing in the towel yes. Seth its nice that you didnt i mentioned your mom, also your wife, who its her birthday today. Yes . Yes, yes, happy birthday, shayna [ cheers and applause seth and your therapist is also in the special. Uh yes seth again, were they was that important to you to have them in there . And did they have any hesitation to participating no, my psychiatrist, dr. Richard friedman is incredibly telegenic and very comfortable on camera. [ light laughter ] so it worked out perfectly and he didnt hesitate and i was excited, because his copay is very high. [ laughter ] seth yeah. So i got a free session [ laughter ] and i thought it was important that people saw that it was not a solo act, recovering from seth sure. From a mental illness. That my wife was very helpful, went to every single one of my appointments and that dr. Friedman was also a very valuable component in my recovery, as far as guiding me through medication and treatment and the hospitalization. Which i had been terrified by one flew over the cuckoos nest and girl, interrupted and that season of American Horror story. [ laughter ] seth yeah theres none yes, it was seth theres not a lot of good movies about how great a time that will be. And i feel, like animation really hasnt done it justice either seth no. So i was terrified. And he guided me through it and prepared me. And it turned out to be very ordinary and so helpful. Seth uh, you come massachusetts. Yes seth peabody, massachusetts. Yes seth you were a substitute teacher for a while . Yes seth was that a good gig did that fit well for somebody who likes standup it was it was perfect. I would tell the kids, because they can get a little rowdy. I said, listen, if you behave for 35 minuets i will do a standup routine to close out the class. [ laughter ] and they would behave, because i had built up a reputation as putting on a good show seth there you go. At the end of class. And it was great training for being a comedian, because theyre heckles were sharp seth yes [ laughter ] yes seth i think the most intimidating group of people to perform for would be high schoolers. Yes, yes. Seth even today. Yes a lot of it was based on clothing a lot of, nice pants seth yeah. And tight pants seth right and these things. [ laughter ] but, yeah, they were brutal. [ laughter ] seth and then you youre obviously very tall. You played basketball growing up yes seth but you had a football scholarship to college yes seth and did you realized pretty early on that you didnt enjoy it i knew when the man was in my home recruiting me that i was not cut out for this i remember he said, you are 17yearsold you have an nfl body. And i remember thinking to myself, i wish i could tell you that no more than 10 feet from where were sitting, i also have a blanky. [ laughter ] i i i still have it. I i acknowledge seth that lasted longer than your nfl body. [ laughter ] the blanky outlasted this is a great show. From the monologue right up until now. This is really a great episode [ laughter ] ive really enjoyed it seth im glad. Were glad to keep you here this whole time pythagoras. Seth pythagoras crushed. Oh, my word seth do you know the true story, pythagoras and you have been in a movie together yes seth yeah. Yes, were in joker together seth both of you are in joker. Yeah yes and i hadnt worked with him since tenth grade. [ laughter ] seth yeah. Said, pythagoras right [ laughter ] youre now on the road already doing a new act. Yes seth is it exciting . And i should say, just as service to anyone interested in comedy or writing in general, i find your twitter feed to be very inspirational oh, my gosh seth because you, every day, you have a different tip for people who are writing comedy. And i think youre very honest about how hard it is and has that been cathartic for you to share your tips for writing standup well, i know youre a very humble person. And you are very grateful for your position. And i feel the same way, that theres such survivors guilt. There are plenty of people funnier than me who havent gotten as many opportunities and so, i cant really evaluate them in stature or anything, like that but i can give them some help in the things that worked for me. So thats how ive given back, yeah seth and you know, i genuinely, because there are times where ill see one and ill think, oh, wow thats you know, ive been doing this a long time, too oh, wow seth but i think theyre really nice they are simple Building Blocks that make a lot of sense and if you kind of stack a lot your ideas on top of each other, i think its a really nice guidebook for people thats so nice of you to say. Seth and so of course ill tell you the best response i got to the tweets was, you sent me a dm complimenting me on that and thats thats unbelievable i never hear from verified twitter people [ laughter ] so that was that was amazing. Seth i dont, and i dont do it a lot, so [ cheers and applause yeah. Seth well, it was genuine. Thats gary gulman, everybody. The great depresh premieres saturday on hbo. Well be right back.
