Senator Kamala Harris is here in the bay area, as she works to reinvigorate her campaign, opening a new Campaign Office in oakland. Last night in San Francisco, talking to supporters in chinatown, one of the topics she touched on, President Trumps impeachment inquiry. Today in the bays Sergio Quintana has there and has more. Reporter senator Kamala Harris had a warm reception for her visit to the ma nil pla town heritage museum. Many of those in the audience know her well from her prior campaigns for San Francisco District Attorney, California Attorney general, and for u. S. Senate. But her president ial campaign has hit a soft patch among the rest of californias voters. Its something she and her supporters arent worried about right now. I have a very complicated relationship with polls. Almost every poll for every one of my races for District Attorney and attorney general said i couldnt win. If you look back in history, candidates like Kamala Harris are the ones who move further through the polls. Reporter the latest poll from the Uc Berkeley Institute of governmental studies puts her in fourth place among likely california primary voters. Shes dropped five points since the last poll, down to single digits. Shes got problems. Theyre probably repairable because theres so much time left between now and when we get really serious about the nomination. Reporter on the swing through the bay area, shell be revisiting oakland where she kicked off her president ial run, her visit comes as her colleagues in the u. S. House of representatives launched impe h impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. Shes been tough on joe biden during the democratic debates but came to his defense against newly released transcript summaries of conversations showing President Trump trying to convince the president of the ukraine to launch an investigation against biden and his son hunt per as far as im concerned, leave joe biden alone, just leave him alone. Yesterday was the opening day at yasugi farms in san martin, just a few miles away from the garlic festival location. This year, there will be extra uniformed Santa Clara County deputies patrolling the grounds. The gm of the pumpkin festival tells us she wants everyone to feel safe. Yasugi farms is expecting 45,000 visitors each weekend over the next month. More developments in a street fight in San Francisco, a battle over boulders, you could call it, early yesterday morning some of these massive rocks were pushed into the street for a third time. Neighbors there have been spending their own money to install the boulders, this is on clinton park and alleyway between dolores and valencia streets in the mission. The idea was to discourage Homeless People from camping on the sidewalks by creating less room there but some are pushing back. Homeless advocates say it sends a message of hate. Others point out that people with disabilities cant navigate around the boulders. The city says it has no plans to remove the rocks. Police found themselves in an unusual position at a local Pumpkin Patch yesterday. This is in petaluma, where officers say they spotted a man accused of slking his exgirlfriend. He ran into the corn maze, and hid from them. They say it was taking them so long to find him that they nearly called off their search. In the end, pet luna police did find the man and arrested him. Coming up, we go live to washington for a preview of meet the press with chuck todd. Plus his parents say he once was a shy kid, now hes the newly crowned homecoming king. Well bring you a sweet update that was first featured in our bay area proud series. Welcome back. We are joined in the studio with our political analyst larry gerst gerston. Welcome. It is time for our weekly chat with chuck todd, moderator of preston sullivan. Thanks for joining us this morning. Happy to. Happy, thanks so much. Chuck, this past week nancy pelosi announced an official impeachment inquiry. What do you think really has changed and what comes next . I think whats changed is democrats know what theyre focused on here. The general calls for impeachment, mueller related, what about this charge, what about that charge . What changed is there is an act he did as president that is selfcontained, the Mueller Report was always about other people on trumps behalf doing things, not about him per se. This is about him, and i think like the nixon tapes did once you heard them it sortf changed a lot of views when it came to i think reading near transcript, not official but close enough, when you read it, you heard the president s voice. It was phrases that you know, so it was him doing it and i think that is what changed pelosis calculation because frankly its why youve seen even the public shifting into something happened here, something deserves investigating here. Great point. Chuck, assuming the impeachment goes through were talking about a tiny issue in terms of the short period of time between now or when it ends and the election. How does that Work Together or does it . Well, larry, ive been skeptical that is does, but do you realize that 1998 the clinton impeachment actually moved very fast even though is started slow. The starr report took forever. Once they got to the point of the formal impeachment inquiry which began in early october in a fourmonth period, they opened the inquiry, filed the articles of impeachment in november and december. They had the trial in january and the verdict in february. Thats about the pace i think this has to be on for this not to get with too much interfering with the 020 election but larry, at some point, youll hear adam schiff say this today, there is going to be a point where they may suddenly look at the calendar and die they dont have time to do this and sort of not have it impact the president. Sticking with this whole idea of the ukraine event and what its led to, a former Vice President joe biden of course is in the bullies eye for the trump and ukraine defense. Is the attention that biden receives from President Trump likely to help, hurt him or have animpact . Yes. I think its all of the above. And honestly, i think thats what, you know, look you talk to all these democratic president ial campaigns, all not sure how this is going to work but the fear is this, when you talk to the candidates not named warren or biden, the fear is this race freezes in place sort of like a caution flag at a stock car race where youre waiting to see what it looks looks like post impeachment and we engage and in reality, its what does biden look like in january, right, what happens . I think thats the unknown. Were going to find out how much does biden engage in this time period, how much does he not engage, does the lack of focus on warren strengthen her buss she doesnt get at tack we thought was coming had she had a normal fall campaign. There is he a lot of things we dont know but the biggest thing is what will joe bidens political standing look at the start of 2020 . Give me that answer and well know for sure whether hell be the nominee or not. Well wait and see, three more months, thanks, chuck, as always, for your insight. We appreciate it. Join chuck this morning for meet the press, hell have a live interview with house representative adam schiff, also an exclusive interview with representative Steve Scalise and exclusive interview with the foreign minister of iran. Turning oother news a comeback story 24 years in the making, just yesterday santa clara held its first parade of champions, since 1995, more than 2,000 marchers across 100 entries took part, including 11 marching bands. The parade of champions began back in 1945, it became a legacy in santa clara. At one point only the pasadena rose parade was bigger. In 1995 the founder retired, the parade was suspended indefinitely. The community is thrilled that its back. It is an amazing demonstration of music and i really loved the whole design and the whole organization of this is really surprising to me. I love all the participation of the bands and the home tour, and the old squad. Of course, next year im thinking im going to have a booth. The parade of champions has that title because its mission is to showcase the citys champions from sports to civic to Business Leaders to art culture and now tech. A homecoming coronation in the east bay for a deserving young man. Take a look. Yes gus exapolias was crowned homecoming king at north Gate High School in walnut creek friday night. We have another trough dropping down and thats going to bring believe it or not rain chances to our area, very, very light chance of showers mainly the far Northern Areas and inland east bay. Your microclimate highs for today are going to be a lot cooler, 67 degrees in oakland, only topping out in the upper 60s for san jose at 69. Look at concord, 70 degrees. 64 degrees for San Francisco, and over the next couple of hours, again we want to talk about those winds, so a lot less wind activity through the afternoon. Were going to continue with the breezy conditions, but lets get right to the chances of rain. The winds are going to pick up later tonight as that trough drops down and then our hour by hour outlook shows shower chances especially through the middle and the evening. Changing the way we view the homeless, how a local mother is sharing their stories and their faces so that others can see them in a different light. Ive booked your shower, sir. How far you travel, is up to you. How comfortable you travel is up to us. Fly emirates. Fly better. The juul record. They took 12. 8 billion from big tobacco. Juul marketed mango, mint, and menthol flavors, addicting kids to nicotine. Five million kids now using ecigarettes. The fda said juul ignored the law with Misleading Health claims. Now juul is pushing prop c, to overturn San Franciscos ecigarette protections. Say no to juul, no to big tobacco, no to prop c. Welcome back. Reporter like her recent projects sketching vintage signs of san jose. Suhita was curious about her adopted citys past. Ive seen it only as Silicon Valley but drawing these signs sort of made me research them and go back to a time when it was farm country and all this stuff t gave me a sense of place. Reporter it was doing this project that led to suhitas next. Standing on downtown san jose streets brought her closer to the homeless than she had ever been and she wanted to know who they were. I got talking to people that i wouldnt usually talk to in my little suburban life. This has been the thought process that i have no name and face to a life very different from mine. She reached out to recovery cafe in san jose. You talk for however long it takes to tell the story. Reporter now learning the names and faces of those who have or are battling homelessness or addiction. We are hoping to take this forward, too. Suhita completed close to a dozen of them, but first going on display at the Santa Clara County Government Center last week. When i talk to these people and they have a face and a story, what is incredible is how it is the resilience of the human spirit. Beautiful. Reporter the whole experience has changed homelessness from an issue to individuals for suhita and that is just what she hopes it does for the rest of us. And i just think putting a face and an individual story changes how you interact with somebody you meet the next time. Suhita has given the project the name faces of recovery, and shes hoping to continue doing many more of these portraits. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. Beautiful. It is 7 27. Last week, humors emerged over an inappropriate telephone conversation between President Trump and ukrainian president zelenskiy. A few days ago rumors became allegations courtesy of a ninepage whistleblower document. That document led many House Democrats to now call for impeachment. Nbc bay area political analyst Larry Gerston joins us once again to help us catch our breath. I just kind of went over that there, but how did we get to this point so quickly . To us seems quickly. This seems to have unfolded been five days. Let me reface my remarks saying this is serious business. This is not just another issue of the day, its serious no matter how it turns out. How did it happen, with claims that President Trump pressured the ukrainian president for dirt on former Vice President biden. If true, that would be a crime, according to american law. The president denied any misdeeds. Pressure increased on President Trump to release a transcript of the conversation within a couple of days and so he did so, provided an account of the conversation, not a transcript, but at least an account that showed he actually asked zelenskiy for help to harm biden. Meanwhile another allegation surfaced, this time that the president had withheld at least 250 million, its closer to 400 million now in military aid to ukraine pending ukraines help on trumps request. There is the chain and it doesnt sound too pretty. As youre saying it, it is serious but does it rise to the level of impeachment . Yes, thats the great question and one we need to ask over and over again. Whatever the merits here, kira, these claims might have died down, might have died down over time. A day or so, the whistleblower said to the Intelligence Committees Inspector General the ninepage letter you talked about with claims by at least a half dozen white house employees about several trump transgressions. The Inspector General by the way is the designated Government Employee for handling claims of poor government, malfeasance, any illegalities things like that. At its core, the letter contended that trump used his relationship with zelenskiy to help himself at the expense of Americas National security. Thats serious business. The whistleblower also alleged that trump covered up his activities by moving the official transcript of the ukrainian discussion to a top secret computer available only to a few people. The Inspector General, a trump employee, by the way, deemed the claim so credible and urgent, given their detail and independent corroboration by several others. Since then, democratic support for an impeachment inquiry soared from 144 members on monday to 224 members on friday, Speaker Pelosi until now slow to back any inquiry now says its time to really move forward. Thats how this thing has moved. Quickly, what does it include, who does it include . What happens this week . Heres the layout. Over the next few weeks i think six or so weeks perhaps six committees in the house will delve into various elements of the whistleblower claims. Most of the heavy lifting done by the Intelligence Committee given the focus in the ukraine area. The committee is chaired by southern californias adam schiff and local representative Jackie Speier among its members. How do all the committees determine what to do next . The Committee Also sit down and interview, compose several people who were cited if that report as well as others. We dont know exactly whether the whistleblower will be interviewed because of concerns for his or her identity and safety, should an interview occur. If it does, it will be in closed session. If the committees determine there is sufficient evidence to impeach the president , the speaker will then ask for an Impeachment Vote which requires a simple majority to forward to the senate a trial. The trial would be overseen at the senate by chief justice of the Supreme Court but lets remember much has to be learned because such a move is even considered. And if the trial occurs, it takes a twothirds vote in the senate to convict. Thats never happened. Still some ifs. Wish we could talk more as always, larry. Thanks for joining us. Well be back with weather right after this. In the human brain, billions of neurons play in harmony. For people with parkinsons, some neurons change their tune, causing uncontrollable tremors. Now, abbott technology can target those exact neurons. Restoring control and harmony, once thought to belost forever. The most personal technology is technology with the power to change your life. It is 7 53. Pour yourself a cozy cup of coffee. Its going to be a cold day ahead by california standards. San francisco beautiful start right now, clear skies over the golden gate bridge. Current temperatures 53 degrees. You probably noticed it was very gusty last night, especially if you were hanging out around the coastline, thats because the cold front dropped down. Notice how it cleared out the skies. No cloud cover right now. Beautiful view of san jose there. 49 degrees right now in downtown san jose. Make sure to bundle up as you head out the door. Meanwhile throughout the afternoon, lets talk about your temperatures right now 39 degrees in napa, so its very cold and your daytime highs will eventually warm up, but there will be running a few degrees cooler compared to yesterday. So its going to be breezy. 67 degrees in oakland. 68 up through napa. Down through the south bay were talking upper 60s for san jose. 69 degrees and yes, i have the word showers in there. The reason for that is because we have a trough thats going to drop down and its going to bring the chance of seeing some showers mainly for far napa, sonoma counties and the east bay so for that reason we have our very own mobile Doppler Radar storm ranger up and scanning. You may have seen all of the warnings that came out of sacramento from an intense system that passed through, triggering some tornado warnings. Satellite radar things are shaping out in through the late evening hours, so lets look at the hour by hour outlook. This is your time line right here. Shower chances especially for the mid i would say 5 00, 7 00 hour look at some of the pockets are rain, again very insignificant rain totals, a lot of areas may not see it, but as we kind of fast forward this time line we get a couple of pockets of showers that pushed through so it might be just enough to where you notice it. It causes a sheen on the roads, through tomorrow, Early Morning through midday and it will clear out and be breezy. Another big story was that sierra snow. This is a current look right now at tahoe north star using our Weather Underground cameras. Th is fsh powder. They have a lake wind advisory in effect and Winter Weather advisory. The reason being its going to be gusty in your drive up there and then were tracking more snow headed into tonight. Lets look at that time line through the next couple of hours. Right now were seeing a couple snowflakes. Temperature its 30s by about 8 00. Well notice the snowfall picking up overnight into early tomorrow morning. If you had plans to head out early on monday morning, be careful. That Winter Weather advisory will be in place through 5 00 p. M. Tomorrow. Its going to be gusty locally. Snow near 5,000 feet. Not a crazy amount of accumulation but its pretty impressive, considering how early we are. Were not even in winter yet. Over the next seven days, again a chance, slight chance of Early Morning showers into monday for San Francisco and then notice by wednesday, our temperatures start to go back up into the 70s because we get another system that rolls through but all in all well remain pretty cool and comfortable, certainly through today and into monday. A chilly start on tuesday, were talking 30s which may trigger a couple of freeze advisories in the far napa sonoma area so definitely you asked for it and fall has arrived. Fall has surely arrived. Then well be back up to 85 on saturday. I know. Its like i never know where we are in the bay area. A jacket handy. Keep everything handy. Vianey, thanks. Before we go, we want to show you cowboy hats are a part of the napa county sheriffs departments new look. The Department Just issued the new cowboy hats to its officers. They say the hats were too full. They protect deputies from the sun and they are a tribute to the areas historical legacy. I lived in texas for nearly two years, and i regret that i never bought a cowboy hat living in texas or cowboy boots. I got to go back. Go back and visit. Always in my heart. I love those hats. Good for napa sheriffs deputies. Thanks for making us a part of her morning. This sunday, the impeachment debate. Betrayal of his oath of office. Aybetr of our national security. And betrayal of the integrity of our elections. Speaker nancy pelosi announces a formal impeachment inquiry, as details emerge from a whistleblower about President Trumps ly phone call with ukraines president. Its hard to imagine a more serious set of allegations than those contained in the complaint. The president saying i would like you to do us a favor, though, and urging an investigation of joe biden as he withheld military aid. Its another witch hunt. Here we go again. Demraon thettack.
