A lot of things happening in the political world. A wild sequence of events. The question now what happens next . Late today, House Speaker nancy pelosi called for impeachment probe against President Trump. The president lashed back saying this is the worst witch hunt in political history. President trump did promise to release a transcript of his controversial phone call with the president of ukraine, but fiat had the actual whistleblower complaint which lawmakers were legally entitled to. The actions of the Trump Presidency revealed dishonorable facts of the president s betrayal, of his oath of office, betrayal of our national security, and betrayal of the integrity of our elections. They all say thats a positive for me from the election. You could also say who needs it. Its bad for the country. Then they wonder why they dont get gun legisonenheyon they don get drug prices lowered. All they do is talk nonsense. The impeachment probe will ask whether President Trump pressured ukraines president to investigate joe biden and his son. The president reportedly ordered the withholding of 400 million of military aide to ukraine. A civics reminder here, impeachment doesnt mean removal from office. Its simply moving forward here, the process of bringing charges. Bill clinton was one of only two u. S. President s to be impeached. He was accuse of oobstruction of justice and lying under oath to a federal grand jury. The investigation was launched in september of 1998, and mr. Clinton was acquitted five months laterment andrew johnson, whos been lincolns Vice President , was impeached in 1868 by violating the tenure of office act. Many people wrongly believe nixon was impeached in 1974. He resigned the presidency rather than face impeachment. He fought congressional access to documents and tapes. Nancy pelosi may be cautious, but hes hard hitting. And this is clearly a line in the sand. Hes tangled with her before, and he typically loses. So, this is something that the president probably was not anticipating. Its certainly a showdown. 20 minutes from now our political analyst will help break down the developments in washington, d. C. Ago, the speaker of the house nancy pelosi is moving forward with impeachment proceedings against president donald trump. So, is this political hot air or a viable path forward to remove mr. Trump from the white house . The action comes as new details have emerged about a phone call between the president and the leader of ukraine. Late this afternoon, House Speaker nancy pelosi announce aid formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump. The actions of the Trump Presidency reveals dishonorable facts of the president s betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of our national security, and betrayal of the integrity of our election. The move is a big turn around for pelosi who has so far resisted impeachment action. The president must be held accountable. No one is above the law. President trump late today defiant in his response. Its just a continuation of the witch hunt. Its the worst witch hunt in political history. How can you do this and you havent even seen the phone call . President trump promising to release the transcript of the phone call with ukraines president amid questions about whether he pressured the foreign leader to investigate joe biden and bidens son. Tthe Washington Post reports the president ordered the chief of staff to withhold 400 million in military aid days before the call, the president acknowledging he withheld aide but seemed to both deny and admit he pressured ukraine. There was no pressure put on them whatsoever, but there was pressure put on with respect to joe biden. What joe biden did for his son, thats something they should be looking at. The president trying to turn the tables on biden who demanded the white house give congress a whistleblower complaint about the call. He continues to obstruct congress, donald trump leaves no choice but to initiate impeachment. Word the whistleblower has reached out to tell lawmakers what really happened. Our political analyst is wuss. We all talk about this every day several times a day. Most americans are tuning in passively thinking are we doing this again . Is there any teeth to this . This is different than the mueller investigation. Mueller investigation went on forever. 448 pages at the end. There were so many things going on in the mueller investigation, people couldnt get their arms around it. An octopus couldnt get its tentacles around it. So, this current mess is very tight. Its very narrow. And its very contemporary. Its current. Its happening now. People know about the phone call between the president of the United States and the president of ukraine. People know by the president s own admission he asked them to look into the biden thing. Question is beyond all that whether the president withheld money to encourage that. These are real issues now. And if theyre true if theyre true, they could be viewed as impeachable offenses. Can you walk us through the process . How does this work . Its kind of simple this time around. The various committees there are six right now investigating. We know about the Judiciary Committee, but the Judiciary Committee and five others are looking into the president s behavior. Once that happens theyll give their findings to the speaker. The speaker will look it over and say what do you want to do . If the speaker feels she has the votes, she has the 218 votes, one path to majority, just enough. Once that happens, then theyll vote. I tell you right now she knows she has the votes. Its in her pocket. She knows that. Forget the drama. Shes got it. To have the vote a week or two, three maybe. Then it goes to the senate. At the senate it becomes a big trial. Those who believe the president has committed offense will prosecute on whatever counts there are. The republicans in the senate will no doubt oppose. So, chief justice will preside. After it completes its process, there will be a vote. It takes a 2 3 vote in the senate, a 2 3 vote to find the president guilty of any of these charges. Its never happened before. Talking points are americans want to focus on the economy and jobs and immigration and not this. Is that the prevailing thought . We know this much. Theres been Public Opinion polls on impeachment to this point and they havent gone well for those who think it should go forward. Last i saw was 2 to 1 against impeachment. This is a different story. This is a different day. This is a different issue. So, in a sense we start fresh. The issues from the past are gone. Now we go forward. The questions i have is whether the democrats along the road will pick up some of the old issues and bring them up as well as the new. Thats something well just have to see. Its a real life civics lesson. And a serious one. We continue our coverage of the story on the digital platforms of course. People have been weighing in since moments after nancy pelosi made the announcement. You can also join in on the conversation. You can do it on nbc bay areas Facebook Page.
