Thats because of the warming trend, it is already under way. So we are going to be ending our summer with a bang, in terms of temperatures. 93 degrees in danville. Oakland, 85. And up to the peninsula, 87 degrees. For redwood city. North bay, 91 degrees inovato. Overall, lets talk about the next couple of days. Weve got seasonable, sunny this weekend. And then as we head in toward monday and tuesday. Next week, we are going to be paying attention to some dry winds, which is going it dry us out. That High Pressure is going to dominate. And when the winds start kicking up, then that concern for fire danger really becomes elevated, especially with a lot of the dry brush that is still out there. So actually, our very first day of fall, on monday, were going to looking at, for fire danger. Elevated fire danger, again, monday is the official start of fall but it is still going to feel like summer, because our hottest temperatures e expected in the middle of the week, and look at tuesday, weve got a dry breeze, northerly winds are expected to pick up, you will certainly feel the breeze coming in, believe it or not, tomorrow is expected to be one of our cooler days of the week, and then as we head toward next weekend, our temperatures finally start to cool off, into the 70s, and then maybe, just maybe, you might start getting a little bit of a preview of fall. Kira . I love how it warms up in october though. Thats true. Im partial to that. Vianey, thanks. Still ahead on today in the bay turning waste that power as part of our climate in crisis change, we turn to a dairy farmer fighting Climate Change one cow at a time. The things that matter most happen one morning and one cup at a time. This is an important week for us at nbc on the network level, were focusing on the climate, the u. N. Climate summit is on monday and ahead of that, were looking at Climate Change this. Morning, we focus on the damage done by methane gas andhe new efforts to turn a problem into a solution. Today in the bay has more on one bay area dairy farmer who is putting his cows to work in the fight against Climate Change. So my father started the farm in 1941. To every farmer, land is a precious thing. I love this land. I love being here. For Albert Strauss this is called a free stall barn. Home is the strauss dairy farm in the west marin county farm of marshall. This farm is about 500 acres and 280 cows. 280 cows doing things cows do. The cows keep everything going. Long ago, strauss had the notion his farm could be different than other farmgs. Were the First Certified organic dairy and creamy west of the mississippi river. After focusing on the dairys end product, strauss began to wonder about the less glamorous product at the end, the cow manure, a significant source of polluting methane gas. I was always looking at how to address the methane concerns from dairy. So strauss installed a contraption called a methane digester. It separates the solids from the liquids. The solids are used to fertilize the farm. The liquids go into a tarp, where the methane gas is captured. The bacteria digests the manure. The gas runs ator, creating enough electricity to power the entire form. This is showing that were exporting power to pg e. The motors used to clean the milking machines and powers the new electric feed truck. The feeder cows are our cows. Strauss is in front of a New California law aimed at reducing livestock methane emissions 40 by the year 2030. A little bit of methane has a very big impact on the amount of heat thats trapped by the earths atmosphere. Climate Professor William colin says it is critical the world reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions soon. Were virtually certain that we have a limited window in which to act to forstall the worst of the changes. My goal is to create a farming system that is sustainable for the planet, for the community, and for the environment, and for the animals. As part of that goal, strauss is also launching an experiment where he will feed his cows red seaweed in order to reduce their belching, another major source of methane and another vision of a farmer who loves his land. Phil rosato jr. , nbc bay area news. Impressive. My daughter megan was six when john was killed. John ofriel will always be remembered as a loving and involved husband and father of seven children. He would do bedtime prayers, and read stories to them. Carol ofriel, his widow, john was a software salesman, murdered in davis, 26 years old, by this man, Timothy Wilson, of San Francisco. When he first murdered john, he had what i called dead eyes, in the courtroom, during the trial. In court, wilson claimed ofriel made sual advances to them, wilson said that triggered his violent response because he had been sexually abused as a child, but he was convicted by a jury. Carol sat in on the parole hearing. They reviewed all of his violence before that. He had restraining orders against him. He had assaults. In fact, that morning he had assaulted a waitress. In this week, on his third try, a parole board decided at 49, wilson is no longer a danger to society. I would be lying to say i wasnt disappointed. I knew it was going to happen at some point. Even though the guy has lied every time, they dont seem to care about that. The ofriel family is challenging the decision. Hoping the governor will overturn it. Especially carroll says from something wilson said in the hearing. It was even on trigger, it can trigger rage on him, still, and he admitted that. Doesnt seem to be interested about public safety. You may have seen throughout the week weve been focusing on the climate, the u. N. Climate summit is on monday, and we have a look at the issues now, as it impacts every one of us. We now look at one of the most obvious impacts of Climate Change, you may have heard of it, it is in the Pacific Ocean and it is a phenomenon known as the blob. Here is nbc bay area video journalist Jonathan Bloom to explain. The oceans are showing signs of these extreme temperature events all around the world. Were talking about a huge area of much warmer than normal surface temperatures about three times the size of the state of alaska. The ocean is a critical part of the climate system. And its changing. We all know about heat waves on land. Sometimes they last for a couple of days. But the last time this happened in the Pacific Ocean, it lasted for three years. Scientists called it the blob. And now, its threatening to happen again. Over the last century, the average ocean temperature has slowly risen about a degree and a half. But now, there is a part of the pacific that at least seven degrees warmer than normal. Scientists say natures air conditioning cede seems to be broken. The arctic is especially warm again this summer, and sea ice is very scarce, so weve got big changes going on around the whole planet. That warm water keeps the nutrients on the ocean floor from rise together surface and that causes plankton to die off and the fish that eat the flank to plankton have to come closer to the surface to eat them and the big fish have to come chasing after them and thats how they end up on the beach. Last year, california sea lions were among the hardest hit. Pups were starving and abandoned by their moms. A spike in whale entanglements in fishing gear. In 2016, some 70 whales got caught up in fishing gear. Crab season was on hold for months, because of toxic algae. Again, scientists blamed the unusually warm water. Nobody knows how long this marine heat wave will last. But if it persists, we can expect all the bad stuff to happen again. When you hear somebody say, you know, we have one climate, one atmosphere, its really true. And it is all connected. That was our video journalist Jonathan Bloom. It is 7 51. And as we were talking about, were about an hur away now from the start of californias annual Coastal Cleanup day. It starts at 9 00 a. M. Thousands of volunteers will fan out across the states waterways to pick up trash and debris before it flows to our coast and creates marine pollution. Last year, get this, they collected 800,000 pounds of garbage, and are ready to do it again. So we want to take you to coyote creek in san jose where 150 volunteers have signed up to clean up today. Were joined live by paula, from valley water. Paula, thanks for joining us this morning. Yes, good morning. This is the largest volunteer event in the state of california for the year. Like you said, were expecting about 150 volunteers here this morning. Were going to span out around the creek and pick up all of the garbage that we can find. And you would be really surprised to know all of the things that we can find. We have found mattresses, tires, a lot of cigarette butts, plastic bottles, and plastic bags, and so we are going to stop all of this from flowing into the San Francisco bay, and harming our wildlife. So that is the goal today, to stop litter where it starts. And can people still sign up, i mean we have about an hour and eight minutes until the official start, can people still sign up, not only at coyote creek but all across the bay . Thats right. So we have had a lot of help here, with four sites with volunteer sites available in san jose, morgan hill and other parts of the bay. So people can go to our web site, cleanup creek. Org. And sign up for today. This is an effort that goes yearround. So if you cant join us today, please sign up for other cleanups. Because we have to stop water pollution, where it starts. Last year, our volunteers here picked up 68,000 pounds of trash. We have 47 sites in santa clara county. And we really want to make a difference today. We mentioned here on air that there is a battle for the bay, between, or among the mayors of San Francisco, oakland, and san jose. Can you quickly tell us what that is all about . Thats right. So the mayor of san jose has challenged the mayors of oakland and San Francisco to see which city has the most spirit, which city can have the most number of volunteers to pick up the most amount of trash, so we are here to announce, with the south bay, to announce the results tonight, but the big winner is the environment, the fish, the birds, and the coastline and join us to put an end to water pollution. We really hope people get out and join today. We have been kofrg the Climate Crisis all week on nbc bay area, and this is the perfect cherry on top to enthe week. Paola reyes, thanks for joining us and explaining how people can get involved today. 7 54. Much more ahead on today in the bay, and we have a clear the shelters coming up next. Welcome back, time for clear the shelters segment. Featuring our friends from pets in need. Martha and robin are here with kina. We were just talking about the commercial break, i thought we had kina on before, but maybe we didnt. Maybe the three months of Maternity Leave has my brain as mush. But definitely my brain is mush. But this is kina. You rescued her from an Animal Shelter in the Central Valley back in april. Thats right. And robin, if you can, robin, by the way, is the dogs foster mom. So you know her, you know her in and out. And tell me about her. We had her a little over two months. We will have her for probably another month. And we just watched her recover so quickly. She actually didnt have most of her hair, when we first got her. She had a skin infection, right . She had chronic flea dermatitis. It is a skin infection. So we watched her fur grow back. And she is super soft now. She had surgery on both her back legs. And now, shes walking again. What a blessing. And you know, she, as you explained to me, she was sort of a candidate for euthanasia. Yes. At the facility where she was. Absolutely. You saved her life. We did, with the Second Chance fund. That is why it is so important to donate to that fund. All of the proceed goes to animals that need a little bit of extra medical treatments, and we cant provide at the shettlt and we have to outsource them, and we have a perfect example here of what the fund can do. As we approach sort of the end of the year, and donating and hopefully people will think about the Second Chance fund to give Second Chances to animals like this dog. And we have more. She is seven years old. She is the sweetest thing. She is so sweet. Does she know she is really not a lap dog . She wants to be a lap dog. She is so cute, just snuggled up there. Comfortable, yes. What kind of home could be good for tina. I think not a ton of stairs probably. Because of her legs, recovering after the surgery. But she really mello. She gets along with other animals. She gets along with everyone. So. Well, we will home that she gets her forever home, thanks to all of you for giving her a Second Chance. Marcia and robin, thanks for coming in. And thanks to you for making us a part of your morning. Find out more on their web site pets in need. Org. We will have more on our web site all on nbc bay area. Com.
