I dont see any major slowing. A marker for our maps just off that interchange but i believe its over there southbound 280. Well track that. The rest of the bay shows a lighter flow of traffic. This morning, delta apologizing to passengers who experienced the scare of their lives. Shortly after takeoff, pilots made an emergency descent, dropping 30,000 feet in just a matter of minutes. Many prepared for the worst outcome, saying they quickly texted what they thought would be their last words to loved ones. Definitely every second that we had the oxygen masks on, without any information, people sort of grew more and more stressed. The plane landed safely in tampa. Delta says pilots performed the descent over an abundance of caution when a depressurization alert was activated. They had to be very frightening to those people. I know, when you hear so much about planes and its just scary. Everything is okay. Lets get a look at the forecast for today. Its going to warm up again over the weekend. This is the last weekend of summer, right it is because fall starts on monday. Were enjoying some summerlike temperatures over the next few days. Lets get a look at the way were starting our morning in dublin, as we head out the door as the sun rises, skies are all clear, and we will have a cool start to the morning, with some low 50s there through 8 00 and then as we go into the afternoon, were heating up into the low 80s. Check out the sevenday forecast, its already up at the bottom of the screen showing we will have hot weather headed our way. As we get up and get the kids ready for school in the south bay, expect it to be mostly clear and 57 for that walk to school, and then as we go throughout the day, theyll have some comfortable weather for lunch outside and recess and temperatures reaching the upper 70s by early afternoon. We are going to see a pretty quick warmup for the afternoon hours reaching 85 degrees in san jose. 86 in palo alto. In oakland today well see a high of 80 degrees but up to 90 today in concord, and in napa and clearlake, expect a high of 86 degrees. So our temperatures heat up, as High Pressure comes in. This only happens briefly before we get a shot of some slightly cooler temperatures on sunday. Next week, High Pressure returns, well see a shift in the wind, kind of blowing offshore, and thats going to create not only some gusty winds but a higher fire danger for tuesday, as well as wednesday. Look at our temperatures over the next several days, our inland valleys reaching 90 today in some of the hotter spots, up to 94, and then some low 90s for sunday and upper 80s for monday and then it jumps up to 97 degrees on tuesday. Upper 90s still on wednesday and cooling down next thursday and San Francisco also has some warming, more sunshine and highs in the 70s throughout much of the forecast. As we get ready to head over to mike, youve been tracking the roads and have quite a few issues for the trivalley and also the east bay. Thats right, kari, showing a build. Its friday. The live look from our camera on Operations Center we were talking about this, we turned the camera over here. There is the city college, theres moorpark, looking toward north 17 and onramp over to the south 280. We dont see anything on this live shot and we did scan back and forth. This is the area reports of a crash, the car went off the roadway. I can also tell you we dont see slowing on our sensors but should be over there. Theres an insurance building over there, the car carrier for insuran insurance. There is no fire truck headed out there, thats good news. We dont have any slowing either but we have the activity that may affect you if youre traveling north 17 on to south 280. This crash 101 at 880 cleared up and a nice recovery, just a mild build northbound routes. You dont see any slowing for Silicon Valley for our speed sensors. We stn continue to see westbound 580 approaching the airway, the slow lane blocked by the big rig, 22,000 pounds of big rig, and the build is gradually growing out of the altamont through basically all of livermore. The dublin interchange though traffic held off back in livermore means dublin is just fine. The rest of the the bay shows a great drive as well. Disabled vehicle not a problem for the nimitz and coming down from the Golden Gate Bridge that crash looks like it is clearing as you travel south past highway 1 on the bay shore freeway, 101 toward the Golden Gate Bridge. Back to you. Coming up at 6 30, vandalism at the office for the oakland gay mens chorus and tell you how the group is responding this morning. Were talking about less snow, changing water supply and warmer temperatures, all of this having a big impact on our atmosphere irrivers in the bay area. Today in the bays meteorologist kari hall has more on the lack of frozen precipitation in the winter might translate to a bigger impact in the summer. Our winter rainfall is the focus of todays climate in crisis series. You may hear us talk about rain coming from an Atmospheric River or pineapple express. Its a long, narrow region of clouds and rain rolling from hawaii across the pacific into california. And the position of the jet stream can guide where that Atmospheric River flows. Now researchers are seeing a change in the transporter of our water supply. The air temperatures are getting warmer by four degrees. It may not sound like a lot, but the temperature difference now and in the coming years has huge ramifications on the weather in northern california. That means that instead of snow falling in the sierra, the precipitation could come down mostly as rain, and that Sierra Snowpack provides most of our water storage for those long, dry summer months. I think more importantly on a deeper level it affects our water supply. It affects our ecosystem and suggests in another way the kind of water issues that well face in the future may be different than in the past, even if the overall amount of precipitation doesnt change very much, because if more of it is falling as liquid rain rather than solid snow that changes the characteristics of the water supply we have moving forward. Scientists say if we continue with business as usual and not make an effort to reduce our environmental impact, sierra snow will become a thing of the past. Thank you, kari. Its 6 25. This art feature made its way around the bay area and out to the nevada desert. Now its making a stop at the s. A. P. Center. The silver shark fin is made by a russian sculptor and titled no swimming. It made its debut at burning man and made a stop at google headquarters for a couple of years and now i think its perfect at the s. A. P. Center. The sculptor says it represents his concerns about the impact of human activity on mother nature. As a bonus, its also a perfect sculpture for the home of our san jose sharks. Certainly a conversation piece. There you go. 6 26 for you right now. Still ahead big stories were following and watching this morning, including the nurses strike set to start in less than an hour at three hospitals across the east bay, and its bigger than just california. But first when we came down, people were like this lady she was like i wonder why people evacuated us. A scary few days for san jose state students and their families. The scene were still seeing this morning, after a shooting on campus. Well have the details. Youre watching today in the bay. The juul record. They took 12. 8 billion from big tobacco. Juul marketed mango, mint, and menthol flavors, addicting kids to nicotine. Five million kids now using ecigarettes. The fda said juul ignored the law with Misleading Health claims. Now juul is pushing prop c, to overturn San Franciscos ecigarette protections. Say no to juul, no to big tobacco, no to prop c. Right now at 6 30 on your friday morning taking a live look outside at the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge. What a great shot out there this morning. Nice way to start our friday morning. Thanks for joining us. Im laura garcia. And im marcus washington. Right now we want to get a look at what we can expect with that weather. Kari has been following it all for uts. The Golden Gate Bridge is very clear. Also the view from the cupertino hills this morning as we get ready to start out the door in the mid50s and were going to see i warming up today. A look at our highs reaching up to 09 in concord. 88 in antioch and the high today in napa up to 86 degrees. Well be warmer today but it also gets hotter tomorrow, so ill talk more about that coming up. Mike, youre tracking some slowing and some clearing. And at 6 30 in the morning we usually only find any opportunity for clearing on a friday with lighter traffic. More slowing at the bay bridge toll plaza. The build happens as folks kind of converge there throughout this entire area. Contra costa county slowing for highway 4 Holding Steady there. A little bit of clearing for other patches coming down highway 101 out of marin county, crash cleared headed toward the Golden Gate Bridge, thats improving and Holding Steady for this big rig as a result of a crash blocking your slow lane, a tow truck should be arriving at isabel any minute. Well track on that as well, laura, back to you. Thank you very much, mike. Its 6 31. Big question in the south bay this morning, who fired gunshots into Martin Luther king library at san jose state . Kris sanchez joins us live on campus this morning where we understand youre still seeing some caution tape thats out there but the lockdown is lifted. Reporter right. There is no more campus alert, that was lifted around 9 00 last night and as you said, there is still caution tape here at the Martin Luther king jr. Library and also a gunman who is on the loose. Police have not made an arrest in this case. Well show you the two windows that were shot out here at the mlk library, happened on the seventh and eighth floors and there were also several windows that were shot out on the parking structure right ac ross the street, its a parking garage owned by the city. Although police told us they dont know where the shooter was firing from, it is unlikely that person was on the ground level, where we are, because it happened so far up. People who were in the area when Police Arrived describe the chaos. We heard sirens coming from like multiple directions. Once we got to the stoplight here, there were some cars parked right here across the street from the library. Two women ran into the street, waved down a cop car and after that, i just saw a bunch of cops coming. Reporter this happened just a day after the arrest of a san jose state student on wednesday, this was an unrelated incident. Sunnyvale police were investigating threats made on social media reported by a Homestead High School student in cupertino. When they identified that suspect as a 17yearold san jose state student, the student was taken into custody and when he was, he had a loaded handgun on him, also ammunition and a knife. He was arrested without incident but again, those two incidents are not connected. Might feel like a ragged nerve day here at san jose state. In san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Thanks for the very latest, kris. 6 33 right now. New this Morning Police in oakland want to know who targeted the oakland mens gay chorus. This week its Office Banner was targeted by vandals. What are they trying to accomplish with the strike . Reporter theyre trying to get their employer back to the bargaining table, according to nurses behind us. We have about 400 nurses going on a 24hour strike starting at about 7 00, a half hour. Theyre already preparing. Its a 24hour walkout, to protest what they describe as unfair labor practices. We spoke with one of the nurses, she teld us theyve been negotiating with their employer, Alameda Health system for ten months, have met 18 times at the bargaining table and have gotten nowhere. The union has already filed charges with the state accusing their employer of failing to bargain in good faith. Ive been on the negotiating team five different times over the years. Ive been here 30 years and literally i have never experienced the kind of disdain and disrespect that, across the table that we have had with the Alameda Health system leadership. Reporter Alameda Health system just issued a response within the past looks like 20 minutes, some of that response we put on your tv screen. They tell us they are taking the appropriate steps to minimize the impact of this 24hour strike on patient care. They say they understand the nurses or valuable care members, critical to quality care and despite the planned activity we believe the bargaining table is the best place to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. We look forward to continuing to negotiate in good faith to reach an agreement that enables us to provide quality care. Nurses at San Ramon Regional Medical Center are also walking out for 24 hours, unrelated to this strike here in san leandro and alameda, part of a nationwide 24hour strike involving 6,500 nurses not only from california but arizona, florida and illinois. The nurses in california, arizona and florida are protesting their employer tenet health care. According to Business Insider weve been negotiating for a new contract for over a year and a half. They want better nurse retention and nursetopatient ratios. A spokesman tells the insider theyve been negotiating in good faith and are disappointed the nurses are walking out. Reporting live on alameda, bob redell, today in the bay. Bob, thank you. The lack of housing is a major issue in every corner of the bay area, but san jose mayor is planning to keep developers fees low to try to build more highrises. That is running into opposition. Its an ongoing 2012 program the city council will soon vote to extend it but some labor and housing advocates are against it claiming developers will pocket millions in subsidies for luxury housing. We should not follow the washington, d. C. , donald trump model of subsidizing billionaires. In a statement, mayor sam liccardo says more housing will not get done unless the city reduces the cost to build. A live look at sfo, and this morning, a lot of travelers are finally breathing a sigh of relief because the runway construction is now over. Reopening last night at 9 00, one week ahead of schedule. Work started on repairing runway 28l nearly two weeks ago. Very first day thousands of cancellations and delays followed. Not a fun ride for travelers, as you can imagine. Many wondering how the airport and the airlines werent prepared for the closure. You buy a ticket for a reason, a certain time and you tell me they dont have a runway, thats not my fault. Delayed flight 5 00, and 6 00 was delayed and 8 00 flight. Frustrating, but they had to repair the runway. This morning the first full day with runway 28l is open and as you heard from that last traveler, the airport is catching up so there might still be some lingering issues today, so check that flight status before heading to sfo. This is involving a big rig blocking your slow lane west 580 continues the lower drive, waiting for that big rig tow truck to arrive around airway so we have that slowdown for the spectacle and the volume of traffic coming out of the altamont pass. Fine through the dublin interchange and no major problems, great for walnut creek and the bay bridge where the metering lights are on. Looking good because its friday.
