Not as bad as yesterday in areas like San Francisco and the coastline. We will get relief today. So you will have a place to get away from the heat. Yesterday, you didnt have much of an option. Look how beautiful the shot is. You can see the sun, the orange in the back, but because it is another hot day, we will have a microclimate weather alert. Throughout the entire bay area, 57 in San Francisco, 58 in fremont and the temperature changes pretty noticeable in some spots including areas like San Francisco, and about five degrees cooler, including santa rosa, about three degrees cooler and you will notice the fog starting to roll. In and we will get some clearing along the coast in terms of the fog but another reason why we have extended periods of microclimate weather, one more day, is because the spare the air alert remains in place. And it was supposed to expire yesterday but they extended it today and we are expecting poor air quality, the inland, the east bay, the south bay and notice the bay and the coast, a lot better and there is the possibility of seeing some smoke coming in because of the fire. So we will monitor that closely and let you know how long the heat will be sticking around. The big difference, along the coast, not 103 in santa cruz today. It was yesterday. A new record. I will go over that in a second. Thanks. We begin with the crime scene at the State Capitol, tensions over a new vaccine law boiling over. Protesters attacked state senators by theying some kind of liquid on them. Two bay area senators were inside the chambers when this happened. This this picture, shot from the senate floor, you can see red dots, soaked into some of the books and documents on the desks. And another photo, a thc officer is seen taking pictures of evidence. And the senator hit by the liquid. We were deliberating over a bill and sitting at my desk when a woman screamed behind me up in the gallery and a rain of liquid came down on top of me and my clothes and my desk. Among the first lawmakers to take to social media was San Francisco senator scott wiener, he says the woman has been antivaccination protester. When you have people who are trying to harass and intimidate and even assault elected officials, thats just not an attack on us as elected officials, thats an attack on democracy. Investigators are testing the red liquid to confirm what it is. For the last several weeks, dozens of antivaccination demonstrators have been converging on the state capital to protest a new law that will make it harder for doctors to exempt children from required vaccinations to go to school, and the Republican Leaders joined colleagues to condemn the violent and unacceptable behavior that took place at the State Capitol this evening. Regardless of differences of opinion, there is no place for this in our america. No one was injured but senators had to delay the final night of the session because of the drama in the senate chamber. They reconvened in a smaller room to finish the work for the night. A crime was committed today. But the senate will not be deterred from conducting the peoples business. Nbc bay area news. We will continue to follow this story, throughout the week, and for more information, on the incident, and the new law that sparked this protest, go to nbc bay area. Com. The suv that was targeted not because of what criminals could see, but what they couldnt. The fremont Police Officers are noticing that thieves are now targeting suvs with tinted window, cargo covers, and privacy screens, breaking into suvs, even though valuables arent out in the open. The suspects were merely just taking advantage of the opportunity, and looking to see if by chance the victim had, you know, valuables underneath the privacy screen being concealed. Fremont police are putting extra resources in place, to see if they can catch these thieves. Manage your wifi network from anywhere when you download the xfi app today. So have any plans to save a life this weekend . No quell. Have i got the event for you. The third area proud blood drive is starting today, starting in less than two hours in fact. Weve been producing the bay area proud series for almost eight years with hundreds of people doing good for their community and their eight ones who inspired me to act which is why i organized this blood drive. But it is the folks like Karen Hendrick at the Stanford Blood Center who do all of the hard work so it is an easy experience for those of us who go to donate. Karen, thanks for joining us this morning. Youre welcome. The first question for you this morning, just has to do with, for people who do come out and donate blood today, where does this blood go . Who does it benefit . Gosh, it could be someones child, a parent, mother or father, an aunt or uncle, on average, our partner hospitals are transfusing 800 to 900 units per week. So the blood that is donated today will help the patients tomorrow, no doubt. Thats fantastic. Tell us about the situation right now with how the blood supply is doing and what are the critical needs this time of the year . Surprisingly, our two most common blood type, o positive and a positive, have an immediate need here at Stanford Blood Center. We have had eye usage all summer long, coming into labor day, and out of it, and usage continues to be high, so while all blood types are needed today, we do have an immediate need again for o positive and a positive. Karen, as you know, this is the third year weve been helping organize the bay area proud blood drive and weve had hundreds of people show up. One of the things im most proud about is weve had 50 first time donors come out to this event. People who have never donated before have come out and done this for the first time. We both know that it can be hard to get people to go the first time. Theres the fear of needles and the fear of the unknown. So what is your message to people who might be watching right now, right sitting at home, saying i know it is a good thing to do, and i would like to do it but im still nervous. Well, its not certainly a pleasant experience, i dont want to say that, but for the relatively small amount of time that it takes, you get to meet some great staff here at Stanford Blood Center, and the donation experience itself is pretty pain. Our staff are great. We have cookies and juice for you afterwards. And the feeling, though, when youre leaving the donation is hard to describe. You feel like youre a super hero. Youve done something relatively easy to potentially help save another persons life. And when we talk to firsttime donors, especially young donors, thats what we really try to instill, is for the time that it takes, its an amazing feeling, and youre really potentially changing someones life. As i said, what else are we going to do today that will save someones life . Karen, at the Stanford Blood Center, thank you very much. I will be joining you out there in just a little bit of time. Speaking of cookies, my family has been baking cookies. So those cookies are going to be there as well. Now, the bay area proud blood drive, we have been talking about it, is 9 00 a. M. To 2 00 p. M. Today. Saturday. And it is at the princeton plaza in san jose. Thats at 1375 blossom hill road. The blood mobiles are parked on the meridian side. If you get there, look on the meridian side. We welcome walk hng in, walkin. But there is time to make an appointment go. To nbc bay area. Com bay area proud and i have all of the information right there. And i am going to have a lot of water and a lot of cold drinks. My car is packed right now so im ready because it is going to be warm. The blood mobiles are air conditioned of course. Perfect. Because san jose is going to climb into the 90s. I will say this though, garvin, by 2 00, thats hen it is expected to get the hottest and it will be in the cooler time frame. We will be winding up. Get there early. Head out there now before it gets really hot. Not much cooling even along the coast even for those who were trying to escape the heat. However look at this beautiful shot of the golden gate bridge. This is the view from the tower cam, we have the clouds with the fog, the iconic golden gate bridge, and San Francisco, today, will manage to climb into the 70s. So it is a little bit more comfortable for today. The current temperatures today, throughout, 57 in San Francisco, and look how warm it is in fremont, but were already noticing some cooling around the bay area. So much so, that San Francisco is running about five degrees cooler at this hour. Compared to where we were at yesterday. Speaking of yesterday, going to be hot but yesterday, it was really hot and one of the things that weve been talking about, var gin an var, garvin and i, just how hot it was. And one of the guys that is behind the set and you will see him in a little bit if he allows me to tweet him, that. Is and santa cruz, a new record yesterday of 103 degrees. It was so hot, this is why were saying you couldnt escape the heat yesterday. Concord didnt hit a record high but did manage to get to the triple digit mark. And santa rosa had a high of 99. San jose, a high of 99. And over at sfo, inching near the 90s. No records for San Francisco. But 94 is pretty hot. Considering the fact that today were only expected to be in the 70s. Thats a big temperature difference. Thanks to a trough nearby that has a cooling trend under way. However, were still expecting the air quality to be pretty poor today, which is why the spare the air alert, it is today, and north bay, it is moderate, and inland, east bay, south bay, still unhealthy, and the bay improved a lot significantly, todays overall daytime highs, look al san jose, 91 degrees, concord, 97. Livermore, 96. Notice we dont have triple digits on the map today. It is just near the triple digit mark again. And San Francisco, halfmoon yesterday, into the 80s. Half moon bay is one of the cooler spots and now back to normal. What is causing all of this . The High Pressure yesterday. And we could still see drifts of smoke because of the fires burning near chico. As we head into tonight, and into tomorrow, weve got this system, this trough, off to the north, and that is going to linger, and it is even probably going to bring a possibility of seeing some rain. I know it sounds crazy, but we could see some shower chance, mainly to the far north bay though. However, some of the models are showing the possibility of some traces of rain, theyre insignificant rain totals but it is more significant in terms of cooling. From 90s to 70 on monday. Due see, you dont see that when we go from 100 to rain to 70s in a couple of days. Vianey, thanks so much. Sometimes facebook can actually save your life. This morning, a story about an amazing gift from one stranger to another. Its the latest installment in our bay area proud. We hear a lot these days about the ill of social media. But every once in a while, in the hands of someone like susie leroy it can be just the opposite. A lifesaver. Though susie is much too modest about what shes done. Im just a piece of the puzzle. Susie is a mother of three, living in clovis outside of fresno, last fall she spotted a Facebook Post from a local mom desperate to find a kidney for her 2yearold son named hayward. I remember just shaking my head, okay. Susie never really thought she would be a match, but getting tested seems like a nice gesture. I never thought im going to be the one to donate the kidney. That was never my intention. I just was a mom, you know, on social media, thinking, man, thats, you know, i want to be praying for them, i want to be following them and find out what happens. Well, a lot of praying, and testing later, and susie was a match. But still, could she really follow through with it . Would i give a complete stranger my kidney, would i do this . And i kind of thought back, like, okay, if it was my child, yes, of course i would do this. If was my nephew, yes, i would do this. And i went through, you know, my neighbor, i was thinking of all of these people, if it was this, would i do it, yes. And susie messaged calebs parents, mandy and kevin with the good news. I was pretty amazed when i saw it and i instantly started crying because i was like who is this. Getting to tell her was a great moment. I will always remember that. Kaleb had been born with a condition where one of his kidneys had already been removed and the second just about to fail, when susie came to the rescue. The surgery took place in may at the Lucille PackardChildrens Hospital in stanford and was a success. Susie and kaleb you can imagine are no longer strangers. Susie now believing it never really was her kidney to begin with. She was just holding it for kaleb. Waiting for a sign or in this case a post to let her know he needed it. There are a lot of heroes in that story. Susie of course. And the doctors and nurses but there is also people who donate blood. Surgeries like this wouldnt be possible without them. Thats why were hosting the bay area proud blood drive. We just told you about it a few minutes ago. If you need more information, please go to nbcbayarea. Com bay area proud. M. , in the 70s but we still have plenty of sunshine to go donate blood for today. At 1 00, 86 degrees and then notice shortly after that, thats when our temperatures are expected to sort of start peaking by about 3 00 to 4 00, and we could be in the mid 90s for inland areas but overall the weather will be beautiful today. And again, this is at princeton plaza, right, garvin . Yes. 1375 blossom hill road. Once again that is 1375 blossom hill road. Any landmarks they can look out for . When you get to princeton plaza, if you look at the meridian avenue side of the mall, we have three whole blood drives. It is a big deal a big event. Oh, great. Everybody will be here waving like this. And my kids will be out there with signs trying to get people to donate. It is fantastic. And i will talk about how the rest of the day has a cooling trend over the next several days. Thank you very much. We begin this morning, with a crime scene at the capitol. San francisco streets are notoriously dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists, and yesterday, there was another call for action. People gathered in the tenderloin to call for a drastic solution banning cars on certain streets. The protest is at the corner of golden gate and leavenworth, a 12yearold boy was hit there this week. He survived but many others were badly hurt or even killed on tenderloin street. The supervisor supports safety improvements including carfree areas. You should have places in the tenderloin where it is like a public plaza like atmosphere where you dont have to dodge cars, you can stay on the streets and youre safe to walk down the streets. Critics say it is hard enough already to drive in the city streets, but closing streets would only make it harder for drivers. A dire warning from the Santa Clara County d. A. Several people have died in the south bay this year including four people in recent weeks. They took deadly pain killers, bought off the street, containing fentanyl. These are pills meant to look like xanax, vicodin, and percocet. But the Santa Clara County deputy d. A. Says there actually full of fentanyl. And sold on the street. A drug 50 times more powerful than heroin. Two milligrams can kill a person. So far this year, nine people died in the county after ingesting a pill they thought was a pain pill or anxiety drug. Most of the victims were under 25 years old. We have a group of young people who are experimenting with drinking alcohol, and maybe taking a xanax, and these oxycodones, kind of the social scene, and younk people who are experimenting and theyre dying and thats why were here. Law enforcement from around the cnt have made busts. Just this week 350 pills from seizures tested positive for fentanyl. This was the common one. Looking at San Francisco, visibility is okay right now. I will talk about the cooling trend that is under way and what you can expect, for the sunday and workweek, of course, coming up. Find something incredible from somewhere amazing. Unique selection. Unbelievable prices. Homegoods. Go finding. 7 44. Were under a microclimate alert because it is another hot day for some inland bay areas. This is half moon bay. This is the go to spot to get away from the heat. Right now about 50 degrees. As we head into the afternoon, the coastline is a little bit more normal with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. And check out San Francisco, a shot using the tower cam, the golden gate bridge, trying to peek through all that fog, and yesterday, San Francisco hit a high of 94 at the airport. So they are expecting today a high of 73. And lets talk about the current temperatures throughout the area. Because were already noticing a little bit of cooling trend that is under way. Even though were still going to be hot today. 60 degrees in fremont right now. 57 in San Francisco. And notice that we have that fog rolling through. Into the afternoon. We will get a little bit of a clearing skyne into San Francisco. The 24hour temperature change, in San Francisco, it is a little noticeable. And about five degrees, and we will notice the biggest drop though heading into tomorrow. Because we still have that High Pressure dominating for today, so you have to keep in mind that the spare the air alert was extended through today, inland east bay, south bay, unhealthy air quality remains, the bay and the coast doing a lot better this afternoon. Lets get to right to todays daytime highs, in through concord, 97 degrees. Livermore, 696. One thing that is missing from this map is the triple digit heat. But i dont think you will be missing that. Because it was really hot yesterday. And as a matter of fact, santa cruz expecting a high of 70. And yesterday, they hit a new record of 103 degrees. Beating an old record set back in 1971 of 102 so santa cruz is a perfect beach getaway. Half moon bay 68. Up to santa rosa, 89 degrees. Concord hitting possibly into towards the triple digit mark. And whats been bringing all this weather . We have the High Pressure still dominating through today. And remember, weve got to keep the possibility of seeing some drifts of smoke, which is why that air quality remains a concern for inland east bay. And then early next week, meaning tomorrow into the start of monday, the start of the workweek, a trough off to the north, this system, it is going to bring the possibility of showers to the far north bay, but the most noticeable thing coming from the system will be the major cooling that we get from it. How cool are we expected to get. We are going to drop down by as much as 20 degrees for inland areas which is pretty impressive. By tomorrow, we will keep a couple of high clouds. Notice the temperature drop by 10 degrees. 83 degrees. With monday, with the shower lingering by off to the north, we have a chance of possibly seeing spotty drizzle early on and a high of 76 drees. Then the temperatures fall in line, a little bit more seasonal for this time of the year. The average daytime high of 87. And thats what were expecting toward the later part of the workweek ahead. San francisco, dropping down to 10 degrees by monday with a chance of seeing some spotty showers, again, and this is mainly off to the north, right now, the models are showing a lot of that off ukiah and santa rosa and not eliminate the chance of seeing some possibility of it through monday. Garvin . Thank you very much. Still ahead on today in the bay, want to be a hero today, save someones life . A lot easier than you think. We will tell you when and where you can. Welcome back. Thanks for making us part of your saturday morning plans. Speaking of plans, if you look over what you have planned to do this weekend, do you see anything about being a hero and saving a life on that list . No . We can help with. That the third annual bay area proud blood drive is happening today. It starts less than a couple of hours in fact. It is the folks like karen hendryks of the Stanford Blood Center who help make it possible for folks to come out and donate. Thank you very much for being with us, karen. Thank you. One question i have, it is obvious that the donations today, they benefit the Stanford Blood Center. These are for people who live in the bay area, but do people, people dont often understand the blood they may donate goes far and wide. Thats true. While here at Stanford Blood Center, absolutely, our first duty is to support patients, right here in our community, when we are able, we want to support our sister blood centers. A recent example of that is a blood center in florida, in anticipation of hurricane dorian, so we sent blood products to them, to support their patients. And these relationships are exactly, im sure this is reciprocal then, hen people ask me why i should donate blood, obviously, i say there are people who are in accidents, there are lifesaving surgeries, but we also need to prepare when were in a disaster situation. Yes. We do. And we never know when those circumstances may arise. So we strive to collect over 160 units each and every day, in anticipation of who knows, so whether its patients of tomorrow, a circumstance where we may need an enormous amount of blood product, its just the blood on the shelf today that will help. One thing, you know, people often say to me, is, you know, i dont know if im eligible to donate. One thing i know, you guys talk a lot about the number of people who are eligible, versus the number of people who actually donate. It is actually pretty small, isnt it . It is. Theres a national average, we think, of about 38 of folks are eligible to donate, and of that, somewhere around 4 , possibly less, possibly a little more, but even still, it is a very small percentage of folks that are eligible that do donate blood. So, but i mean, for people watching, what you just said, it is more than one out of every three people now, is eligible, but only a few of them, a few of them do. Yes. If somebody is at home wondering, if theyre eligible, what should they do . How can they find out . Come on down to todays drive. Our staff can go over your history, to determine if youre eligible, you can certainly call our blood center today. And determine your eligible potentially over the phone before you come on down to the drive. But we encourage you to come on out, come down today, and donate blood. Karen, Stanford Blood Center, thank you very much. I will be joining you in just a little over an hour. My car is packed.
