Weekend, its going to be really hot, and were leading in to that heat today. Here is a live look outside in palo alto starting out with some clear skies. We wont see our usual start with the mostly cloudy sky. Were going to start it out clear and see those temperatures heat up. At noon were at 76 degrees there, and as we go hour by hour, all of our microclimates will have some pretty major warming going in to the afternoon, except for San Francisco. Were going to keep it cool there and along the coast while the inland areas reach into the mid 80s by early afternoon. So well get a closer look at all of our microclimates coming up. Mike, you have one issue affecting the bay bridge. Kari, the issue is that there are no major problems getting to the bay bridge, so everybodys getting here really quickly this morning, and so we have had a steady flow of traffic, even though it hasnt built up until the last five minutes where the fastrak lanes started to show the backup you saw live camera there. Berkeley curve sees a little more traffic. All the feeder rows, the east shore freeway, over here looking at highway 4, 24, walnut creek interchange, 242 moving smoothly in to concord and pleasant hill, a smooth drive, all of at approaches including the oakland driv for 580 and 880. Over here on the peninsula, we are talking about construction clearing just north of marsh but also a crash just reported in the area, checking with chp, maybe well get some more information by the time we get the next report. I see some slowing so well check that live camera coming up. Back to you. Thank you very much, mike. 5 02 right now. Innout Burger Lovers in campbell may go hungry after the controversy on the story. Today in the bays kris sanchez is live at that location to tell us what happens next. Kris, a lot of people are wondering. Reporter yes, marcus and laura, this is the location that were talking about here, its a boarded up site off hamilton avenue and highway 17. It used to be the elephant bar, if you are familiar. A meeting last night two years in the making. Innout burger started the application process to open a new restaurant in campbell but got a lot of pushback from folks who live in the neighborhood just behind it. Just before that Planning Commission vote yesterday, neighbors continued to talk about their concerns. Long, long queue lines, cars blocking local streets, queue lines in Shopping Centers blocking other businesses parking, idling cars. This location can be used better with any other kind of business other than a drivethru. Reporter in the end, the Planning Commission voted 22, they were stuck and the familyowned burger chain is asking for a review of that decision saying in a statement, this vote came after two years of study and interaction with more than 500 members of the public, countless meetings and an agreement with the city of campbells Planning Department on over 50 thoughtful conditions of approval and 17 Environmental Impact report mitigation measures designed to minimize the impact of our footprint on our new neighborhood. However, there is no future meeting on this issue planned at this point. We will ask the Planning Commission later on this morning, as they arrive back at work, and see whats next here. In campbell, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Thanks so much, kris. 5 04 right now. New this morning, richmond has reportedly joined San Francisco in banning all ecigarettes and vaping products. Right now in new york many people remembering what happened 18 years ago. The terror attack in new york to the twin towers. Right now a live look there at the freedom tower, this is where many people will remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost there 18 years ago, and also many memorials happening throughout the country this morning. This is in shanksville, pennsylvania, where Vice President mike pence is expected to speak this morning. Then at the pentagon President Donald Trump will mark the anniversary, 18 years ago, where a lot of lives changed after that terror attack. This is such a memorial, you know, memoryfilled day for so many, but especially right here in the bay area, a lot of ceremonies are taking place. Reporter thats right, laura and marcus. This ceremony starts at 6 45, and ive covered this ceremony, its very emotional. They honor the victims with the ringing of the bell. [ bell ringing ] all 47 fire stations in San Francisco will remember the 9 11 victims. About 3,000 people died in the attacks, including more than 300 firefighters who responded to the twin towers. This event is free and open to the public, and back here live firefighters just came back from a call and they said they are definitely ready to start with the ceremonies this morning. Reporting live in San Francisco, im sharon katsuda, today in the bay. Thank you. Certainly this is a somber morning. Stay with today in the bay as our live coverage of todays events continue not only this hour but were going to continue them next hour as well. Its 5 08 right now. Were talking about those tripledigit temperatures that are coming our way, at least by the end of the week. We want to check in with kari, she has a look at our forecast for today. Today should be mild . Its going to be mild but youll notice it will be a little bit warmer than yesterday. Thats a live look in palo alto. As you get ready to head out the door, we start out with some Cool Temperatures this morning, upper 50s to start, and then well be in the upper 60s by 10 00. Well see those temperatures going up pretty fast here, at noon were at 76 degrees. Here is a look at all of our highs for today, this is slightly above normal for clman of our microclimates. 89 in livermore. 91 today in concord, so were starting to see those 90s appear on the map today, and then it gets even hotter, headed into the next couple of days. So were going to have more on that and also whats ahead for the weekend coming up in a few minutes. Mike, youre seeing the reason for the lights in palo alto. We showed you the shot in palo alto. The last couple of minutes a lot of lights. We talked about the construction crew between willow and whipple. Heres willow, traveling up north of willow at marsh we have a crash as well and thats blocking one lane. More flashing lights arrive, so in addition to the crews moving and i hope this doesnt involve any of the overnight crews, we should have another crash which hopefully will clear quickly to the shoulder. As we track that, we already see the slowing that shows up on our sensors northbound from right there, willow up to marsh, and university is where our camera is. Crews there traveling up toward whipple, both directions had construction for the bay shore freeway in that area. Besides that, everything looks fine on this map but i want to take you just a little farther south, reporter from the monterey chp reports henry at the desk told me about a fire reported behind summit house, near the Santa Cruz Mountain summit on the southbound side, there is that restaurant the and should be in the parking area where youll see activity but it will be a distraction. 880 is a smooth drive through fremont. Back to you. Something to keep an eye on. Thanks, mike. Still ahead on today in the bay, an explosion at a uc berkeley lab. Coming up at 5 25, the injuries one student suffered. And kfc with a side of dating . I know you might be confused by that but i promise you, if you stick around were going to break it all down for you. Youre watching today in the bay. We are here to discuss jessies online time. And out of respect, we will let you make the first offer. Thirty minutes. Thirty minutes . Objection overruled. One hour. Sweeten the deal by doing the dishes and ill consider it. I wouldnt do it. I hate the dishes. One hour with the tablet, you walk the dog and do the dishes. If you insist. Congratulations. Only xfinity xfi lets you take control of your familys online time. Thats simple, easy, awesome. Xfinity xfi gives you the speed, coverage and control you need. We start out with upper 50s at 7 00 and quickly see the temperatures heating up today. Thats going to be the trend. Warmer air in the forecast, not only today but the next couple of days. Ill show you all the numbers, all of our microclimates, thats coming up in less than five minutes. And even though its early, look at the bottom number, highway 37 already shows a little bit of slowing toward mayor island out of vallejo. Well show you the bay bridge. And good morning to you. Of course its a specialay for everyone, but particularly those in finance working in new york who were so hardhit. Cantor fitzgerald lost 658 employees on that day. Two San Franciscobased companies here, both of them are laying off workers. Uber says its going to let 265 engineers go, 170 product managers as well. This comes on top of julys layoffs where many in the Marketing Team were laid off. Uber desperate to get out of the red. You might take a lot of uber rides but its losing a lot of money. On top of that, the California State Senate has passed a bill that would make contract workers like uber drivers employees. The house passed a similar bill earlier. This means once it goes through markup, it will go to the governors desk. The bill covers more than uber, of course. It also includes lyft and all kinds of other gig workers, the people who park your cars or deliver your food, those sorts, when you want to work jobs the Flexible Workforce has been critical to so many services. It may not stop there. The editor inchief of the San Francisco chronicle Audrey Cooper says it may affect newspaper routes. Cooper writes Assembly Bill five will probably sound the death knell for some printed versions of california newspapers. Its not the only challenge to professional journalism in 2019 but it is the f m serious. We started talking about layoffs. Back to that, Charles Schwab also based in San Francisco says it will let brokers go because Interest Rates are falling. They charge less for interest, make less money, you lay off 600 employees and apple showed off new phones, a new ipad and other things at an event in cupertino. They lost their lustre. People are not buying phones like they used to because theyre new. They keep the old ones. The most notable thing is the iphone 11 with three lenses. Theyre sticking with a numbering system, i assume 12 will be next. Two takeaways, first of all their cheapest new phone is significantly cheaper than past new phones. I noticed that. So prices are coming down. Also services are going up. Youve got the apple tv thing. If you subscribe to everything that apple offers as a subscription, you pay them 55 a month, so you can see expensive phones are not the Business Model anymore. Less expensive, less, 750. If you get a phone, you get apple tv for a while . For a while, yes, and apple music for a certain amount of time, to bring you in and enjoy it. So services are going to be where theyre going to try to make their money because i have an iphone, i think its a 6. Really . Im happy with it. It doesnt not do anything. As long as it works. Ive had a 6 for like four years. Because all right, our stage manager is laughing. I just upgraded a few months ago. Right, it works. The business and tech guy. Thanks a lot. Trending this morning if military men tickle your fancy, kfc might have just the thing for you. The fast food chain is launching its own dating simulation video game. Players will see if they have what it takes to win the heart and become the Business Partner for the most famous chicken salesman ever. Thats right, you can literally date the colonel. Kfc will debut the free game starting september 24th. Why is everyone getting into the dating game these days . I dont know, but hey, forget hey right here. Were coming back to that, are we . So scott, you joined the facebook dating profile. I did, remember, facebook started that dating app. I checked it for you because i know how into it you guys are. Probably more than you. They still havent activated the whole thing. Really . Im just sitting out there all by my lonesome. Im so lonely are you lonesome tonight poor scott. You always have a shoulder to lean on. Not this one. And thats what friends are for. Weve been talking about great weather to head outside for maybe that first date. Were going to take a liv look outside in San Francisco. Its going to be sunny today, but we will still have some fog at times rolling across the bay. Just not a lot of it. Here is a live look out there as you get ready to head out the door and our temperatures on your way out to the fruitvale b. A. R. T. Station and take a look at this sevenday forecast. Its already up at the bottom of the screen going microclimate by microclimate and were going to be in the upper 50s heading out the door in oakland. Well be at 65 degrees at 10 00. Lunch time outside still feels nice, 72 degrees, with sunshine. And then we head down to the east bay, in hayward, were going to see those temperatures if youre headed out to the park at about 60 degrees at 8 00. At 11 00 were at 69 degrees and then at 1 00 76. Well be slightly warmer than yesterday but not too bad. Some spots will heat up today especially the south county, where were going to see those high temperatures reach into the upper 80s. We have some low 90s inland for our valleys in the east bay. Antioch reaching 91 and danville up to 90 degrees. Well see some mid 80s for palo alto today, while daly city stays in the mid60s, and the north bay or San Francisco up to 73 degrees in the mission district. Now to the north bay, well see sonoma reaching 86. Novato as well as clearlake up to about 87 degrees. Its still going to be cool out there for the game, if youre headed out to San Francisco. Expect it to drop back into the mid70s and then coming down to the upper 60s, so well feel better than it did last night out there at oracle park. We have some warming ahead in our forecast, so High Pressure continues to build. Were going to see some major warming over the next few days and High Pressure causes the air to sink and as it sinks, it heats up. We also dont get as much of a breezy wind, and that High Pressure will be right over us on friday. Thats when our temperatures peak and then as it moves on, were going to catch some relief, but that storm system to the north starts to bring down some cooler air, but look at the roller coaster were headed on. Were going to peak at 90 degrees in some of our warmer spots today, up to 101 degrees. Looks like that will be for the inland east bay as well as the north bay, and then were coming down into the mid90s by saturday, but really feeling that cooling early next week. Mike, youre updating a crash and a fire. Thats right, kari. Theyre not in the same location. The same location we had a crash and construction crews clearing. They did not affect one another. Those crews are now cleared from the right two lanes, at least here at willow, so traffic flows much more smoothly. The crash at marsh just outside of our camera view looks like it is also off to the shoulder, and so we see speeds actually improving, still slowing right around willow, just north of university. The rest of the peninsula looks great and the rest of the bay looks great but i do want to call out over here Santa Cruz Mountains, the monterey folks, the chp there say theres a lot of thick smoke traveling across from the summit area, summit house, across the freeway over toward the northbound side, so that may affect drivers although the speeds dont show any effect on the sensors. Theres a small roadside fire and we have crews out there but theyve called another crew and a water truck so there is an issue there right now. The bay bridge toll plaza pretty standard buildup over the last couple. Back to you. Thanks so much, mike. Coming up, one east bay city has a new plan to give homeless families a place to say overnight. Up next, the growing concern from neighbors ahead of a pivotal meeting. But first our team is always on social media. Check out this photo raj mathai shared of his daughter. Youre watching today in the bay. Hey. You must be stevens phone. New for you this morning a uc Berkeley Graduate Student is recovering after being injured in a lab explosion, it happened yesterday afternoon in hildebrand hall. She was wearing safety glasses, but injured her forehead. She was working with nitrogen and theres no detail on the severity of her injuries. Police are hoping you can identify a man a person of interest in a case of a mother of five who was shot and killed last week. They want to talk to the man seen in this surveillance image. Theyre hoping you may recognize even his car. 44yearold Martha Casiano died after being struck by a stray bullet the night of september 1st, it happened as she left a wedding reception on east 22nd street. Police say there was an argument happening nearby and someone fired a gun. If you know who the man in this photo is, Contact Oakland police. An empty lot in berkeley may soon give homeless families a place to stay overnight but some neighbors are not on board with this plan. The city owns a small plot of land on university avenue, this is near North Berkeley b. A. R. T. Station, and once planned to build Affordable Housing there, but that fell through. Tonight councilmember also debate turning into a safe parking site for People Living in rvs. One person who lives next to the lot is concerned. If youre thinking of putting rvs here i think the people in this building would be some of the first you should talk to. The Housing Commission says only eight to ten rvs would be allowed to park in that lot and it would hand pick the people who could stay there. The kel quick clarkson show continues its big premiere week. A live look for you here at the backed up bay bridge toll plaza. Mike is going to have a look at that commute coming up for you in just a bit. Kari is going to help us get through the day with that forecast. You dont want to miss that. It is 5 27 for you right now. Youre watching today in the bay. Today the lives lost, nearly 3,000, remembered as many people remember that day. Were going to have continuing coverage throughout the day here on today in the bay, as we remember that day, 18 years ago. We want to thank you so much for joining us this morning for today in the bay. Im marcus washington. Announcer and i and im laura garcia. Its going to be a little warmer, starting to get there, at least today is considerably mild, comparedo what were in store for. We have big changes ahead going into the next couple of days. Were going to start out with clear skies, this is a live look outside in san jose. As we check out our temperature trend, we do have a cool start, with some upper 50s. Well be at 57 degrees through about 7 00. Well be at 70 degrees at 10 00 and at noon still not bad, were in the mid70s. It will be hotter today compared to the past several days, especially in the inland east bay and the far north bay. Ill track the hotter weather in the forecast and look ahead to the weekend in about six minutes. Mike, youre focusing on oakland. Thats right, one of the reasons obviously the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights were turned on, right on schedule this morning. We have sorted things out to a pretty typical pattern. You see the fastrak lanes are visibly moving, the cash lanes really see that Traffic Building up. Quickly building south 880 look at that toward 29th, where a disabled vehicle was only really affecting the offramp it looked like but then the traffic built up quickly from about 980, so watch for slowing in the area. Hopefully chp can help assist that person get off of the roadway. The fire on the Santa Cruz Mountains is under control now. Well talk about that highway 17 does move smoothly, well point that out in the next report. Back to you. Thats good because that could be concerning. Thank you. Its 5 317 a decision from fremont leaders where to put a Homeless Navigation Center is leaving some people outraged. Councilmembers made the decision late last night after narrowing it down to two possible locations. Today in the bays bob redell is live in fremont with the decision and reaction from a lot of people. Bob . Reporter fremont could have built the mousing Navigation Center for the homeless on a vacant lot here in fremont, but they voted unanimously to build it right here mind me in a parking lot right behind city hall. As you can see, hundreds of people voiced their opinions at last nights City Council Meeting both for and against this project. This is an issue residents here have been fighting for over months. The housing Navigation Center will be a 45bed facility supposed to provide Homeless People a place to live and help them transition to jobs and permanent housing. Some felt dacoto road location lacked Transportation Options and too close to schools. Others feel the City Hall Location will make the downtown too crowded and the third group of people who dont want the Navigation Center in fremont at all. Today the whole meeting, you know, i heard the buzzword, experiment. How can you do this, waste all this taxpayers money for an experiment . Not acceptable. We already have unhoused people on our streets, and thats something we have to deal with. We cant just imagine that theyre not there and assume they go away. Reporter Kimberly Peterson is the Fremont Police chief pointed out at the meeting Homeless People are already in fremont, regardless of where the Navigation Center will be. She says were not wringing them here, theyre already here. The cost to build and operate the center is 7. 7 million. Its expected to be up and running by june of next year. Reporting live here in fremont, bob redell, today in the bay. Thanks so much, bob. 5 33 right now. Former oakland raider turned patriot Antonio Brown is responding to Sexual Assault and rape accusations made by his onetime personal trainer. Britney taylor filed a civil suit in florida, accusing brown of sexually assaulting her twice and raping her last year when he was with the pittsburgh steelers. Brown was never charged. It is still unclear if police ever investigated the accusations but browns attorney released a statement saying in part, mr. Brown denies each and every allegation in the lawsuit. He will pursue all legal remedies to not only clear his name, but to also protect other professional athletes against false accusations. Taylor also released a statement, it says in part as a rape victim of Antonio Brown, deciding to speak out has been an incredibly difficult decision. Speaking out removes the shame that i have felt for the past year and places it on the person responsible for my rape. Brown and his attorney both call it a consensual relationship. Browns new team, the patriots, say that the nfl is now investigating and under no circumstance do they condone any type of Sexual Assault. 5 34 for you right now. Back to the day many of us will never forget. It has been 18 years since the september 11th terrorist attacks changed the nation forever. Americans from coast to coast will pause for a solemn ceremony to remember those killed. Here is a live look in new york city, where family and friends will read the names of all 3, 0 3,000 9 11 victims and there will be six moments of silence. In shanksville, pennsylvania, Vice President mike pence is expected to speak at flight 93 memorial. Flight 93 was on its way to sfo after taking off from newark airport. President trump will go to the pentagon to mark the anniversary and a Memorial Ceremony is also being held there. As those lives are remembered, more are dying, sadly, from diseases they got while trying to just help the victims. And 22 new names have been added to the new York City Fire departments 9 11 memorial, all are victims who succumbed in the past year to diseases they got after being exposed to toxic chemicals in the World Trade Center rubble. The president of the uniform Firefighters Association says others are still fighting for their lives. We have three right now that are in hospice. We have numerous others that are in Critical Condition. Manhattans 9 11 memorial also dedicated a new section to those who died from 9 11 related diseases. It outlines the ramp that First Responders walked for months into the smoldering rubble of ground zero. As the country marks todays anniversary, stay with our today in the bay show, as we have live coverage of todays events. Were going to continue throughout this hour as well as next hour, and we will take a moment of silence along with the east coast. 5 36 right now. A followup for you. B. A. R. T. Has decided one version of the new fare gates its testing is not worth the cost. In july, b. A. R. T. Installed these gates at the Fruitvale Station to stop fare jumpers. The plates pop up like shark fins once the gates close but cheaters are still jumping the gates and all too often breaking the plates in the process and b. A. R. T. Calls it a costly fix so b. A. R. T. Installed a different version of the gates at the richmond station and those gates are apparently Getting Better results. B. A. R. T. Says the number of ride cheaters has dropped around 60 and at some point they may expand to other stations. If you plan to drive through San Franciscos waterfront tonight be prepared. This is the second straight night the Mission Bay Area will be tested with twin events at the new chase center and oracle park. The giants game starts at 6 45, as it did last night and tonight eric clapton takes the stage at the new chase center at 7 30. In last nights first test city leaders tried to get the word out because theres little parking but not everyone listen listened. Driving around for about a solid hour and we couldnt find parking. We had to park two miles away and take an uber here. Some guys have all the luck. Some say the gridlock could have been worse because giants drew a sparse crowd and the start times were more than an hour apart. The giants game ended long before the concert did. See how tonight goes. Got to keep advising folks to use the mass Transportation Options. Lets get out to the roadway, we have our map of traffic northbound 101 as you travel up through palo alto we had a traffic break which actually just cleared as you guys were reporting all the activity over there near chase, 101 and reopened as far as the traffic flow past willow. Again, we had a crash and we had traffic crews north of willow toward marsh and whipple, and that is once again flowing well seesensors slowed down on our maps there, a little bit there slowing northbound 101 but not a major problem. The rest of the bay moves smoothly. That fire at the santa cruz summit near summit house is under control now but now the investigation starts. No impacts to the traffic flow there and the backup at the bay bridge is no surprise. No surprise. All right, may surprise people maybe not if youre listening to karis forecast but summer is making a big comeback. Its going to be hot headed into the weekend. Were getting you ready as you make weekend plans to know what to expect. Here is a look at the saturday forecast. Its going to be in the low 70s near the coast. Maybe youre thinking of making it a beach weekend, while the inland areas are still going to be very hot, reaching into the mid90s. On sunday, thats when the temperatures start to come back down, a little bit closer to normal, so its going to start to feel nicer by the bay and the inland valleys reaching up to about 84 degrees. Lots of festivals going on this weekend including one i enjoyed last summer. The blackeyed peas festival in oakland, were going to see temperatures in the mid70s to start and its probably better to get there early, because it will still be quite warm, reaching into the mid 80s during the middle of the day. If youre going to be in the trivalley, heads up that on friday, were up to 101 degrees. But look at the difference between friday to saturday at 94 and high on sunday up to 81 degrees. A cooldown headed our way. If youre going to the sierra, well see highs in the mid70s so definitely milder there and it gets cooler by the end of the weekend, with some breezy winds. Half moon bay will be a nice place to hang out especially on friday, when were all inland baking in the heat. Were going to be in the mid70s there and well see mid60s for the rest of the weekend and going hiking in muir woods will be warm on friday but feeling a little bit more comfortable on saturday and then on sunday were talking about highs in the low 70s, but check out how hot its going to be in paso robles this weeken. Saturday 103 degrees so not the place you want to go if you want to escape the heat and in l. A. This weekend its going to be warm, reaching into the low 80s there and a lot hotter for some of those inland valleys. Let me know whats up this weekend. Im karihallweather on twitter, facebook as well as instagram. Ill look at todays temture trend coming up in three minutes. Sounds good, thank you very much. Also coming up on today in the bay, were remembering 9 11. 18 years ago, its hard to believe its been that long. This is a live look from pennsylvania, where Vice President mike pence is expected to speak at a special memorial, at the site of flight 93 memorial. Also in new york city, were following where they will read the names of all the victims that died tragically that day. Its all coming up. Well take you there live. Plus troubles continue at sfo. This is due to the runway construction, weve been in contact with the airport overnight.
