Plus, Hurricane Dorian, a massive storm churning in the atlantic with the bahamas in the cross hairs. Dorian has just been upgraded to a category 5 hurricane. The latest forecast coming up. But lets begin with the mass shooting in west texas. This one played out after miles and miles of a routine traffic stop. The gunman went on a rampage between the texas cities of midland and odessa. Garrett is in odessa with the latest. Good morning. Were learning more about the victims of the terrible shooting. One of them a local high school student. The other a little girl just 17 months old. What we dont know much about is the shooter. Police have not released his motive or his name but they say the threat here is now over and the investigation is fully underway. Theres an active shooter. A traffic stop turned deadly. The shooting right there. At 3 25 p. M. Authorities say state troopers stopped a gold vehicle on the highway and the driver began shooting out the back window with a rifle wounding one of the officers. The suspect identified as a white man in his mid 30s fled the scene. Do we have an update on the active shooter anymore. The shooter sent authorities on an active chase. Eventually abandoning his car, jumping into a mail truc he was stopped at the local movie theater. At that point, this subject was contacted by Law Enforcement and an exchange of gunfire happened and that subject is deceased at that location. This shooting spree left at least five dead. More than 20 injured including three Police Officers. One victim was just 17 months old. Anybody that hears the sound of my voice, you need to grasp on to your loved ones and hold on to them and pray for this town. The shooting happening less than 300 miles from elpaso where 22 people were killed last month. Texas Governor Greg Abbott saying i want to remind all texans that we will not allow the Lone Star State to be overrun by hatred and violence. Beto orourke furious at a Campaign Event in virginia. I dont know what motivation is, the firearms that were used or how they acquired them but we do know this is [ bleep ] up. They pulled federal resources to assist the fbi and atf. We remain absolutely determined to work with leaders in both parties in the country to take such steps that we can address and confront this scourge of mass atrocity. Already this shooting is reigniting the gun debate around this country. Something still so raw out here in west texas. Thank you. Now to the other big story were following, Hurricane Dorian just upgraded this morning to a category 5 storm with top sustained winds of 160 Miles Per Hour. We have got correspondents stationed across the storm zone and a forecast in just a memo. Lets begin with morgan in the bahamas. Morgan, good morning. Yeah. Good morning. And the word in the bahamas right now is that its too late to get out. With dorian on their doorstep people are forced to weather this and hunker down. Especially in two islands directly in dorians path. Abaco island and grand bahamas. People have already evacuated in anticipation of dorians arrival come later today. We have video just in showing the waves and the winds starting to pick up where dorian will first make landfall. The power was off in anticipation of dorian moving in to make sure that there werent any electrical issues. And people have been keeping an incredibly close eye on it. The bahamas has low elevation putting it at great risk for this storm surge estimated from 10 to 15 feet that could be washing inland putting hundreds in danger. It never gets any easier and right now a great sense of uneasiness in the bahamas, especially in those two northern most islands where dorian has already started to show itself. Thanks, those few sandbags arent going to help very much. Lets get an update on where dorian is heed. Maria is with us this morning. A lot going on out there. Absolutely. What youre looking at right now is a horrifyingly perfect tropical machine. Theres nothing in its way. Powerful and reading right to the bahamas. Its a category 5. Winds of 160 miles per ho 225 miles east of West Palm Beach florida. Still on a slow westward movement about 8 Miles Per Hour. Its going to continue to slow down. Thats the scary part as you can see coming in through the bahamas tonight into early tomorrow as a major hurricane, a category 4 but look at how slowly it moves by Tuesday Morning and then tuesday afternoon and wednesday still in the vicinity of the bahamas as a major hurricane. Its going to stay off the coast of florida but not out of the realm of possibility. But continuing toward the southeast coast and areas like savannah and charleston and thursday and friday beginning to close in still as a hurricane at this point by friday morning. Stay on high alertlong the southeast coast and the outer banks. All the hazard potential here along with the storm surge and heavy rain and gusty wind. Notice how far from the center, still a high likelihood of at least Tropical Storm gusts, 50, to 60 Miles Per Hour and of course the heavy rain potential here. Most of it staying off the shore right now but that is according to the current forecast. Thats why these areas with the potential for big flooding need to pay close attention in the coming days. Thank you. Government officials in florida are warning residents and visitors there to stay on alert. Gabe gutierrez is in cocoa beach. Whats the latest there . Good morning. Parts of Floridas Atlantic coast are under Tropical Storm warnings. Many people breathed a sigh of relief when this hurricane track started to shift to the north and the east. In a fla officials as you mentioned are still warning residents to be vigilant and we have seen many residents starting to sandbag. Theres been a run in supplies of local Grocery Stores over the past several days. We understand that things are improving now. Here, mandatory evacuations were set to begin today but they have been postponed until at least tomorrow. Now Florida Power and light has prepositioned some 18,000 workers in the area and theyre expecting extensive outages but again many people in southern florida including the florida keys, miami and Fort Lauderdale are now out of the cone of uncertainty but, floridas governor is warning residence denlts th den residents that much of the state is still not out of the woods yes. Gabe, thanks. Given the uncertain path of dorian this is a big test for the truch administrati the Trump Administration and fema. Chuck todd is on meet the press. Is the white house ready . This is putting fema in a tough position. This is an acting administrator. Fema is part of the department of Homeland Security where the president and the west wing have been micromanaging that department so much that it has acting personnel including the head of fema. To it eliminates any margin for error. Any benefit of the doubt that fema might get. If there is a hiccup, ple immediately the president is going to feel pain about this because of how much he has micromanaged the management team. The president said he has an affinity for actings. He said that because he likes the fact that it makes the person a bit more it gives him more authority. It gives him the ability that these folks are a bit more subservient to him because they dont have the protection of a senate confirmation. Here we are on the day after yet another mass shooting. There was a lot of activity after the last two. And all of that activity seems to have faded into the ether. Anyway, anyhow that when the vesz is over and peop recess is over and people come back to washington that theyll at least begin the talk about gun control again . Im with you. Theres a lot of rhetoric but theres not anything beyond that with el paso and dayton. Here theres starting to be questions with the focus. Shift to the trade war and shift to other things. This is a sobering reminder that gun regulations, what to do about it, is going to be front and center and i think this shooting almost makes it inevitable that congress is going to have to tackle the first thing when they come back. Not as sort of i think the way we have seen it in the past. Thank you and be sure to watch meet the press this morning when chuck talks to the acting fiona administrator and digs into the generational divide in the democratic party. Among his guests, president ial candidate julian castro. A moving moment at the u. S. Open last night. In primetime in a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium the magical run of 15yearold cocoa gauff ended with a loss to naomi osaka in straight sets. Both of the players were in tears as they met at the net after a match and in an extremely rare move she asked gauff to join her for the post match interview. The two once trained at the same facility. She has been so sweet to me. Thank you for this, thank you. You guys raised an amazing player. I remember i used to see you guys i dont want to cry, i remember i used to see you guys open last night. Lets turn now and get a check 59 degrees right now in San Francisco. Our temperatures will once again be warming up into the 70s. 67 degrees by 12 00. Expect to see some of that fog burn off. Meanwhile, further inland down through the south bay in san jose 64 degrees. Well get plenty of sunshine by 9 00 a. M. 72 degrees. Inland temperatures will be climbing into the upper 80s for the south bay, but also expect to see mid90s in some upper 90s through the trivalley, including areas like concord and antioch. Up next, the highs and lows of the week including the coffee order gone awry in the middle of the u. S. Open. Plus the Russian Sports reporter somehow maintaining his composure while under assault from a sprinkler. And later, a suggestion, perhaps its time to step away from your smartphone meet some people that think you should forget about social media and start living in the real world. Partner . Not again. Limu thats your reflection. Only pay for what you need. Liberty, liberty, liberty, liberty its time for the highs and lows of the week. I believe we have four highs but well let you decide. Our first high is the answer to the hopes and wishes and prayers of millions of us and this answer does not come in the form of a question. We of course are talking about alex trebec and the good news he shared a few days ago. He is back to work. I have gone through a lot of chemotherapy and thankfully that is now over. Im on the mend and thats all i can hope for right now. Let me tell you, its going to be a goodyear. Just five months after announcing he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Tribeck says production for season 36 of jeopardy is already underway and hell soon return to the airways. I dont know about you but in our house jeopardy is a ritual every well, just about every evening and as that news came across that he was back and healthy, it came as a great relief and we are so pleased because alex is one of the best in the business. Our first low is really a high. It comes to us from the u. S. Open where tennis legend Venus Williams was feeling a little low energy during her second round match. So she did what many of us do. She asked for a cup of coffee. She did it, mind you, in the middle of a match. For serena. Needs some caffeine. That unusual request proved a bit confounding to the dedicated ball boy. The 14yearold briskly but calmly set about to deliver the goods. The problem was venus headed down the hall for a bathroom break, an area beyond the boundaries of ball persons. Undeterred he delivered the coffee so it was waiting for her when she returned to her seat. Unfortunately the coffee was not the elixir of energy required. She lost the match and the ball people out at the u. S. Open, when youre 14 you can go out there and try out and then theres a cutoff and a whole very arduous procedure to get these folks ready. Some folks continue. Thats well over 50 years old. E our next high goes to the soaring spirits of a cancer patient during a surprise concert by a team of dedicated nurses at atlantas northside hospital. When amanda found out she had leukemia it meant that the Backstreet Boys super fan and her sister would have to cancel their plans to attend an upcoming performance and thats when the hospitals nursing staff stepped in. They did not miss a thing including the flashlight light show. The video went viral and caught the attention of backstreets Brian Litrell who had some encouraging words for amanda. I want to just encourage you and tell you to get well soon. Stay strong. My family are praying for you. The guys are thinking about you. And just want to wish you well. Lots of love and kisses to the family. And you get well because i want it that way godspeed and get well soon. Our final low, really a high, goes to the Russian Sports reporter while reporting from the soccer pitch, our hero was unflappable, a broadcasters broadcaster. [ speaking Foreign Language ] he corresponded on russias match tv was sharing developing news on the status of a star midfielder when the stadiums irrigation system was turned on. Yeah, okay. But in the show of monumental professionalism he kept going taking not one but two from the sprinklers. Those of us who have been on television for awhile feel nothing but empathy for the amazing russian broadcaster. Coming up, a sunday sit down with oscar winner viola davis on her extraordinary american story from a one room shack in South Carolina to alist hollywood and later on, women proving that magic is not just a mans world anymore. And send us some questions on twitter, facebook, and instagram with the sunday today. We will dig through the sunday mail. I dont know if thats a good and a very good sunday morning to you. During the commercial break vianey and i were talking about how wonderful it is to live in the bay area. Look at that, the fog in San Francisco from our camera on san bruno mountain. Thanks for joining us on this sunday morning. Kira klapper is off. Im scott mcgrew. Vianey arana has a look at your microclimate forecast. We have some beautiful hues. Its so nice outside. Im going to give you a slightly different view of the same thing. This is a shot on our sutro tower cam. The golden gate bridge, the very top of it, if you look through those rolling clouds of fog, you can kind of see that. This is one of my favorite shots. We will see the fog linger around through the first half of the morning, its 59 degrees right now. It will give a combination of sun and clouds around 10 00, 11 00 in the upper 60s. Yesterday at the San Francisco international airport, they hit a high of 84 degrees. It was pretty hot. San francisco did manage to climb into the 70s and we will be climbing into those mid70s again. The airport could see a high of about 80 degrees once again. Downtown San Francisco will be a little bit cooler. San jose 64 degrees. Your microclimate highs will reach into the 90s though for the interior valleys. We have this High Pressure that will linger around but i think this is great weather for Labor Day Weekend. Ill give you a look at your lake tahoe forecast, napa or your beach forecast coming up at 7 00 a. M. Thank you very much. In news a street race turned deadly for two people in san jose. A black jeep and a gray bmw were racing northbound on snell avenue near rosenbaum around 6 30 last night. The driver of the jeep lost control, crashed into a tree. Two men inside were killed. Three men in the bmw got out, then got back in the car and drove off. So officers want to know who these men are. Theyre shown in photos here. The crash brings the number of deadly collisions in san jose this here to 32. An unusual dangerous situation in an Upscale Hotel in san jose, dozens of people had to be evacuated from the fairmont because of a Hazardous Material situation, an apparent suicide involving dangerous chemicals on the 19th floor triggered that response. Three floors of the Hotel Downtown were evacuated. Nine people decontaminated outside, taken to the hospital. Theyre all expected to be okay. We were in our room level 19 and all of a sudden, we had sound alarm, a panic alarm, and then somebody announced that we needed to leave. They evacuated us quite quickly. Hazmat teams havent identified the chemicals involved. Guests were on the other floors were allowed to come and go as usual. If you or someone you know is struggling there is help 24 7. The phone number 18002738255, chat with a counselor online as well. A grass fire near i80 started near the fremont offramp around 9 00. Fire crews say somebody was cooking in the area. No buildings were burned, no one else was hurt. Coming up this morning on today in the bay, why one man decided to swim through garbage. You is kind, you is smart, you is important. You is smart, you is kind, you is important. Thats so good. That is viola davis starring in the 2011 movie the help. The role that earned her an oscar nomination for best actress but also a role she later says she regrets taking, not for the Work Experience which she treasured but she says because in the end, the voices of the maids she and others played were not really heard. Five years later, davis did win an Academy Award in the film adaptation of August Wilsons fences. In addition she won a pair of tony awards, a golden globe and her emmy for her work on the hit Television Show how to get away with murder. She and willie got together earlier this year for one of our favorite sunday sit downs. Its my choice, my life. I got this. Viola davis knows how to carry a scene. From her break out oscar nominated performance in the help. Youre a godless woman. To her portrayal of rose opposite Denzel Washington in the film adaptation of the film fences. I took all my feelings, wants, needs and dreams and i buried them inside you. Which earned her a place in the exclusive Lifetime Club of Academy Award winners. My parents, im so thankful that god chose you so bring me into this world. That oscar stage must have seemed a world away for the 53yearold actress who was born into extreme poverty. I always said i grew up po which is one rung lower than poor. What is your childhood like . Everyones childhood filled with happy memories and playing with my sisters and bicycles and all of that but it was also filled with the darkness of when youre poor you have bad housing. We lived in condemned buildings, certainly apartments infested with rats and you know, just the stigma of poverty. The feeling on the outside. The feeling invisible. The lack of access which is why i talk about it all the time. And its uncomfortable for me. It really is. Viola and her sisters found their joy in putting on performances around house in the rough one square mile town of central falls, rhode island. I started acting when i was 8 or 9. My sisters, we would write skits. We would have rewrites. We would have a wardrobe budget. She eventually earned a scholarship to young Peoples School of the performing arts and studied theater at Rhode Island College after which she was accepted to new yorks famed juliard school. She was nominated for her first tony award for her broadway debut in August Wilsons 7 guitars. Opening night of seven guitars, when i think about everything that i believed that being an actor was, that was it. My mom and dad being in the audience and my dad crying. I was like, im it. This is it. I have arrived. I wish i could go back there. And im like really viola, you thought that was it, right . Davis went on to win four tonys. One for king headley ii in 2001 and another in 2010 for fences. She began to land small roles in television and film. In 2009 davis earned an Academy Award nomination and the attention of a hollywood icon for her performance in a single scene of doubt. I am trying to do just that. Then what do you want from me . What was it like to jump into movies from the stage . I always say all you have to do in a movie is sustain a performance for 30 seconds. When youre on the stage, you can have a 12 page scene and there are no edit buttons. So it was much different and youre acting opposite of someone like meryl streep. So youre standing there going but im viola davis, im good. And then youre acting opposite her and youre thinking, oh my god, its meryl streep, oh my god its meryl streep. So much of what we do in movies and tv, sex appeal. How cute are you . Do we like you . Im not so good at that. Now i have to tell you, theres a cap on awards. Theres a cap on cuteness and i dont know being on peoples most beautiful list. What do you mean when you say that . Theres a cap to greatness. The elixir is living a life thats bigger than you. Thats what it is. And if youre not doing that, then youre not doing anything. Nothing. I always say the three most important words that happen, especially as you have big old trophy in your hand, the three most important words are, and now what . Denzel has the best quotes by the way. He says theres no uhaul in the back of a hearse. You cant take it with you. I know you say winning an oscar isnt the end of the world and whats next. But to have oscar winner in front of your name every time someone says it, it does mean something. Its changed my life to be oscar winner to being on a tv show. The tv show transformed my life more than the oscar, the money, all of it. I remember someone saying you know, youre not poor anymore. I was like, im not . That tv show was how to get away with murder. Do you think im scared . Youve never gone up against a governor before have you . Youve never been up against me, either. It urned viola an emmy, playing annalise keaton, a criminal law professor whose work and private life become intertwined. I need for annal circumstanc ise to have some laughs. People think im not fun. Im so much fun. Get a laugh. The show will return this fall for a 6th season. Do you have moments, do you ever stop in your life and look back at the little girl in rhode island and look at your life and go, i dont know how i got here . Thank god i did, but i dont know how i got here. Every single day. You know when i think about her a lot too, when i open my refrigerator. When i flush my toilet. When i can put a robe on. When i have hot running water. She is with me every day to understand that every little thing in my life is to be celebrated. And viola davis is soon to executive produce and star in an Anthology Series for show time about americas first ladies. She will play michelle obama. And dont forget to subscribe to sunday sit down podcast to hear willies entire unedited interview with viola davis. You can find it on Apple Podcast or where ever you get yours and next week willie catches up with grammy winning artist sheryl crow. She will speak about her new album, sexism in the music business and what its like to have her boys join her on stage. Sheryl crow next week on sunday today. And coming up, this morning, its your chance to ask me a few questions. Use the sunday today on twitter, facebook, or instagram and ill get to as many as possible when we read our sunday mail at the end of the show. Now lets get another check on the hurricane. Wnbc has more on that right now. Good morning. Good morning, we have a category 5 storm on our hands. Maximum winds of 160 Miles Per Hour. Youre seeing a perfectly formed hurricane machine heading toward the bahamas. And a stat for you, the Atlantic Basin never had four years in a row with a category five storm. Dorian makes it four in a row. Unprecedented history making storm already. We have the warnings up for the bahamas. Nassau out of the effect. The Tropical Storm watches with warnings north of miami. That is feeling the Tropical Storm conditions. Gusty winds, 35 to 50 Miles Per Hour. Heres the official track from the National Hurricane center. This is what has everybody concerned. A major category 4 storm sitting over the bahamas for a day or more. This is going to be devastating for this area. You can see by tuesday not moving much. By that point its expected to make the turn. So the track does keep it off the east coast but the impacts in terms of rain, gusty winds and perhaps the wave action and storm surge. Still by the way, wednesday afternoon. And then the southeast coast. So heads up, very carefully continuing to push to the is outer banks and here too the center of that cone is very close to the end of the week. Keeping an eye on the models of course in good agreement as it heads to the bahamas. Still widespread Going Forward but notice most of them taken off the coast that does impact the rainfall potential. Models in good agreement, harry. Were waking up to that fog in San Francisco. 59 degrees our temperatures through about 9 00, 10 00 a. M. Will climb into the 60s and were talking about upper 60s and some 70s in the city for today. This afternoon will be a combination of sun and clouds. For the coastline the fog will be a little bit slower to burn. Once it burns off well get nice warming, in through the south bay, 64 degrees in san jose. By 10 00 a. M. Well be at 76 degrees, climbing into the upper 80s. Low 90s and mid90s through the trivalley. Thats a look at your local weather. So still a lot to hash out. For sure. Thank you so much. Up next, social media in many ways its making us more socially isolated than ever before. You can look at your coworkers sometimes interesting vacation photos on instagram but because of all of this technology, many of us feel more socially isolated than ever before. Nbcs jake ward met some people that are trying to do something about it for our sunday spotlight. He moved to california from Downtown Los Angeles and he didnt know a soul. So he posted an invitation for a neighborhood meal at a local buffet. Lets look each other in the eye and lets be neighborly. We really only thought five or six people were going to show up and then we had like 35 people. We had a baby there. We had kids there. Were having dinner with sherry and sherry. Its an antidote to what he sees all around him these days. Everybody is looking down at their phones and im like where is everybody . There is an epidemic of loneliness in america right now. According to the Insurance Company signa that did a big study on this last year, only half of americans have any meaningful social contact with anybody else on a daily basis. Why . Well, come look around. Studies find it doesnt just feel bad, its bad for us. People that are more socially connected live longer. And connection through Technology May not be enough. If you ask well, what would create the most community or lasting friendship or lasting dating for example it is not swiping and scrolling technology. Some companies are taking it slow on purpose. So nice to meet you. Sarah meets her neighbors for coffee before going to work as the ceo of next door. The service ted used to start his dining club. Were all about the power of proximity. So its not just about who is in your personal network today. Instead its about the people that live around you so thats a very different kind of starting point. Tech Companies Generally want you on their apps all the time but fryer says its more complicated for next door. In your case youre saying i have done my job when they put the phone down and go do the thing that we got them doing. Time on the app is a bad me tri metric for us. Pintrest is also engaging user creativity. Were not trying to take advantage of the wayward brain. Were actually trying to deliver great value to an intentional act. So for example i bought a real fixer upper and i spent over a year on pintrest coming up with ideas to renovate my house. Thats a different mental state than somebody that might be absent mindedly scrolling through pictures of their friends. Perhaps social media needs to stop selling the illusion of connection and actually put us together. Just ask the folks at the dinner club. Its really cool to meet new people. A social life. Were talking and we dont have our cell phones out. Instead of social media. For sunday today, jake ward, San Francisco. Jake, thank you. Next on sunday today, abr abra cadabra. Magicians have been men through the years but now an increasing number of women are taking center stage. Young girls will come up to me at the meet and greet all the time and theyll say that was so cool. I want to become a magician. And later, a life well lived. Women held props and got sawed in half or disappeared. But now more and more women are performing the art and proving its no trick to be as good if not better than the man. For jen cramer headlining a show at the west gate resort in las vegas is pure magic. Magic has a great way to connect with people. To make them smile. To make them laugh. To share that experience of wonder. You sort of make everybody feel like theyre 5 years old again. Even in a dress, she always has a trick up her sleeve. Will you give a little wiggle. A little magic wiggle. Hes a natural. It changed. The reaction that people have, that must bring you so much joy, right . It does. Its so much fun to be able to share something that i love so much. Hooked by magic at age 10, her role models growing up, performers like pen and teller were all men. When youre watching magicians on television, you semen on tv so i think a lot of young girls it doesnt even occur to them that magic is a possibility. Magic has been a male dominated field. Women working as the assistants the ones that were sawed in half. We met her at jen cramers show where she told us she was once a magicians assistant. He made me disappear. He brought me back. There were exceptions like adaline hermann. The performer known as the queen of majoric agic and the escape that performed the bullet catch trick. Now women are joining the ranks to be trained in places like the magic and Mystery School in vegas. The door has been open for women to come into the art of magic and the performance of magic. Over the past three years the International Magician society has seen a 35 jump in female membership. Lipstick, yes. Visibility is always so important. So the fact that young girls can see you, what does that mean . It means so much to me. Young girls will come up to me at the meet and greet all the time and theyll say i want to become a magician. Push it right in. For women in magic, you can call it the great appearing. Sunday today, joe frier, las vegas. Thank you. This week we highlight another life well lived.
